I mean it's not his fault he didn't know that, he didn't have a license!

Being a cop in Florida sounds so fun

No rules, no accountabillity, all the money you can "civil forfeit" and free ammo for your free gun!

@Ash I'll give him a D, for DUI

initiative 77 has been repealed by DC council
tipped workers will now, thanks to the council, no longer begin to see increasing wages

@Unionhawk link?

Thanks

tfw you live in a democracy

Yeah really
I think the USA is the only place with a law like that. I think Quebec has a lower minium wage for positions that get tips, but only like a dollar lower. Still fucked imo, but not nearly that bad.
and a special slot for people in clothing which is the same as general, what
it's actuall lower per hour than I thought
9.45 compared to 12.25
huh, they even have minimum wage for fruit pickers. Interesting.

@Wipqozn Don't forget to tip your avocado toast farmer.

@Yuuki Apparently
that's just quebec though
Rest of Canada doesn't do it as far as I know

2:24 PM
in the United States, wage+tip must be at least regular minimum, and if not, then the employer must supplement it

@Unionhawk Yeah I knew that was athing, which is good but like

However, this is often not done

Yeah I figured
and if you complain well have fun not having a job

wage theft is larger than all other theft combined

And also, employers can dock your pay.

2:24 PM
it's super cool and good

@Unionhawk banking fees?

Which can result in lower than minimum wage.

but even people should just get paid minimum wage and if you get tips then great

YEP

@Yuuki What can they dock your pay for?

2:25 PM
being disabled for example

At least in Nova Scotia your pay can be docked for certain business expenses, but it never go below minimum wage.

that's a real thing you're allowed to pay disabled people subminimm
it's super cool
normal and good country
now @uni that isn't fair america is already great

the best country

Uniforms is one thing, I think. I think employers are required to supply a free uniform when employees are hired, but can charge them for additional ones? But if that would put them below minimum wage they can't.
I think there's even a rule that employees are entitled to free repalcement uniforms every X years or something

@Unionhawk what a joke.

2:27 PM
@quartata democracy in this country is a fucking sham

My understanding is that your wage + tips must be at minimum wage at least but there's no protection against docking pay.

check this out: your wage + tips should be 15 + tips

Does the US have the idea of an "Experienced employee" minimum wage?
I think it might be a nova scotia thing
> As of April 1, 2018, employers must pay experienced employees at least $11.00 per hour. They must pay inexperienced employees at least $10.50 for each hour of work.

tl;dr wage + tips >= minimum_wage but also wage + tips - docked_pay <= minimum_wage is possible.

@Wipqozn no
lmao

2:28 PM
> An experienced employee has done a kind of work for at least three calendar months or worked for the same employer for at least three calendar months. An inexperienced employee has done a kind of work for less than three calendar months and has worked for the same employer for less than three calendar months.

why bother having local ballot initiatives when 13 rich people can just take a piss al, over them

I think there are lessons here

So basically a way to help folks with no experience at all get hired over those with some experience

An implementation of that in the US probably just means businesses will cyclically fire people every two months + 29 days.

We need to design things to be robust enough to hold up
We need to launch the DC council into the sun
and we need to hold local politicians accountable
because as it turns out they're usually bad!

2:30 PM
@Yuuki Pretty sure it's cumulative across all experience, but that second condition makes it more confusing

hmmmmm it really makes you think

oh I think that second condition just means that if I've worked for you for 3 months you need to give me a raise if I was an inexperienced employee when I start

maybe local politicians suck ass because they get no media scrutiny

"what up bootlickers" refers to pretty much every city council not just seattle

@Unionhawk I think you need folks running things with a sense of ethics beyond "Help the rich eat the poor"

@Unionhawk sad but true
ugh this dc council thing has me pissed off
> The council has overturned successful ballot initiatives at least four times since the 1980s. In 1996, lawmakers reversed a 1992 initiative that tightened limits on local campaign contributions, and in 2001, they overturned a measure that established term limits.

Uhhhhhhh
What

wow it's almost like those are connected to this one too

So, basically

how much do you think the restaurant industry threw at them

it's too bad "bootlicker" will trigger twitter jail because UHHHHHHH

Twitter jail makes no sense

It's barely a joke
Also pretending to work at Applebee's = instant ban

user15026
@Wipqozn I know it's not a thing in Ontario

@quartata lol did they ban that person that posted a "i work at applesbees and i pee in the soda of whoever wears a MAGA hat" and then channers got furious when it turned out they didn't work at applebees at all and therefore couldn't be fired for such things?

3:23 PM
@quartata fun story: there's a bar near here that bought up a bunch of old applebees shit
they were advertising an applebees night featuring shitty apps etc
there is now a cease and desist hanging on the wall

3:49 PM
@Ash yeah I think it's nova Scotia only

@Wipqozn It's not just Nova Scotia, but it is uncommon.
Actually, I might be mistaken, but there are provinces that do allow for lower wages than the stated minimum under certain circumstances.

@Unionhawk you mean like twitter, lol?

4:11 PM
@GodEmperorDune it wasn't even that
literally just said "kicking them out"
but yes
this is the same person banned for the pickle slushies

@GodEmperorDune I'm reading the article now

BREAKING: Alabama Governor Kay Ivey has rescinded the state's policy of sending money allocated to feed people incarcerated in jails directly to sheriffs in their personal capacities. The money must now go to government accounts. Stay tuned.
how was this ever thought to be a good idea?

@GodEmperorDune I mean, if your goal is to feed incarcerated people then yeah it makes no sense.
Now if that's not your goal, then I think you can see why it'd be a good idea.

@Yuuki fair

@GodEmperorDune Keep in mind that Kay Ivey is only governor because Bentley finally resigned despite his massive massive marital and associated scandals, lol

4:41 PM
@TimStone he had the weird sex tape audio, right? i forgot about that

Yeah, something along those lines in a recorded phone call
Doug Jones took Luther Strange's seat after Strange was appointed by Bentley to fill Sessions' vacancy so that Strange, then Attorney General for the state of Alabama, could not continue to investigate Bentley's misconduct
Or so the story goes

some house of cards stuff right there

According to North Korean state media, Kim Jong-un skipped a meeting on denuclearization with Sec. Mike Pompeo to ... visit a potato farm.
lmfao
And of course he did, he's already shook the hand of the US President multiple times and had him gushing, what does he need to appease Pompeo for?

“In exchange for this act of good will, Democrats will insist that Judge Kavanaugh answer all fair questions at his confirmation hearing.”

Now @CNN is contacting all 100+ of our former staff and interns asking for dirt on me. Getting desperate! How can you ever trust such #fakenews?

@TimStone fuck. Just....fuck.

4:55 PM

The article is talking about the story on the left, and then over to the right we have...Ah, well

@TimStone Look, we can reduce violent crime if we just don't call it violent crime in the first place.
taps head

I just have to say that I think it's important to consider that he was a juvenile at the time, and that generally having lighter sentences for juvenile offenses is a good thing

@TimStone 100 hours of community service, for killing someone by dangerous driving?
The land of the (get out of jail) free

5:04 PM
@murgatroid99 I mean that's true, but to see zero jail time for manslaughter seems weird?

Also only suspended from driving for one year? That's ridiculous

@TimStone Honestly, I don't know. I have no idea what sentences juvenile defendants have received in other (vehicular) manslaughter cases. It does seem lenient, but I don't have a frame of reference

I think a similar (but not quite the same) case was Ethan Couch, who was sentenced to probation on four counts of intoxication manslaughter (he then violated that probation and saw 720 days)
That would be your apples-to-almost-apples comparison in that 2 rich white kids still so I'm sure uh, people get tried as adults all the time
so
On the other hand we should hopefully be hoping for this direction? I guess?
In practice it feels like an injustice for these assholes to be out of jail but

I mean in Chase's case he'd have been out a long time ago anyway, so

5:23 PM
@Unionhawk My point was more that I don't know what the sentencing guidelines are for that crime

If the prosecutor said that was harsh, than probably around that
honestly
@TimStone my opinion on whether or not it feels like an injustice for Chase Koch to not be in jail stands
me: abolish prisons, also me: ^

@TimStone I should have mentioned to be sure to click thru for the embedded tweet too because lol @ Manafort
It is impressively bad that he can't even avoid self-owning while in jail, a place where you should probably start to reflect on how badly you might have self-owned

@Unionhawk So, I don't know if I'm misunderstanding. Are you saying that you think he was sentenced according to existing sentencing guidelines, but also that his sentence was unusually lenient specifically because his father was rich?

No he's just saying he should be in jail for other Koch-related reasons I think

Well, that, but also more along the lines of there tends to be a racialized component to prosecutors deciding to upgrade charges to adult

5:29 PM
Ah, yeah, also true

Which, may or may not have been as much of a factor in the math decade

Personal opinion: charges should never be upgraded to adult

Yes
It still feels like an injustice for Ethan Couch to be some kid who made a mistake, but for others to be actually they're 16 that's basically adult

The way I see it, the injustice is with the other cases, not with that one

even though we should strive for the first in all cases, the instinct is to go "actually why is this kid even presented an opportunity to flee to mexico"

5:32 PM
lol yeah I still can't believe that didn't add to the charges

This thread explains the arenanet mess in a more articulate way than I did. It’s a bit long.
So, because it seems a lot of people are having trouble with it, I'm going to talk about Jessica Price and ArenaNet.

> A content creator ("ArenaNet Partner"), Deroir, took the opportunity to contradict her and say "It's actually not that hard, just do this."
Did he actually say that?
Because based on what I've heard, that's not what he said nor how he said it.
And if he didn't say that, then I'm tuning out of this thread one tweet in.

@Yuuki then i shall jump to the important part
A frightening amount of people seem to believe if you wrap things up in a polite container anything you say is automatically polite and constructive. That civility and polite mannerisms are the style that overrule any substance. If it's not already obvious, I disagree with that.

A frightening amount of people also seem to believe that you can pull whatever gut reaction you want out of a comment and it really doesn't matter if the original person actually was being polite.
Point is, this whole thing is messy and it's doing nothing but enforce "Twitter is hell on earth" to me and everyone who uses Twitter is better off staring at whitespace.

I am not saying her replies were 'polite'. I'm not saying Price is an angel. I'm saying she doesn't fucking have to be. She's a human being. That's not me saying she's flawed and made mistakes; it's me saying she doesn't have to suck your dick for you to treat her like a human.

Whatever, this whole thing's been a mess.

6:34 PM
the larger thread goes into EXACTLY how deroir's stuff was passive agressive and not to be taken at face value

Yes, Reddit is a terrible place and no, Price didn't deserve to get fired.
@GodEmperorDune Maybe I'm looking at the wrong posts, but the larger thread uses other people's comments (on Twitter and Reddit) to extrapolate that Deroir was being passive-aggressive.

@Yuuki Reddit is more like a lot of nearby places, some of which are terrible

That's like me saying you're a jerk because Trump's a jerk.

His initial comments are not, as he later claims, him trying to start a conversation. He is not asking "what do you think of this?" "why doesn't <x> work?" or "could <x> fix the problem?". He is *telling* her, not talking to her. He comes, he explains to her, he wraps up & leaves
Understand - a man who is a popular YouTuber and streamer is *telling* a dev with 10 years of experience how to do her job better. He is not creating a conversation. He is giving her an explanation.
And he caps it off with "Nonetheless, I appreciate the insightful thread!", which in this context means "But hey, thanks for your input!" You may have heard of a term called mansplaining. This is what it looks like.

I gotta be honest, I feel like this conversation is going to go no where good. Frankly no one here can really talk about what the intent behind deroir post was, only they can, and I don't think getting into another debate on that is going to lead anywhere productive.

6:40 PM
...
what
@Wipqozn In our harassment grievance policy, we include the language "intent or effect" in order to address "well I didn't MEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEAN to" which I think is a good principle to apply here. Frankly, I'm completely uninterested in reading minds.

On the one hand, "intent or effect" means people can't get away scot-free with an insincere and/or untruthful explanation. But also means that people who make genuine mistakes are punished when a "here's what you did wrong and why" would be all that suffices.
But depending on the group, the proportion of people who make actual mistakes versus the proportion of bad faith actors varies and with a group such as DSA that's assumed to be more socially aware than the average person, the number of people who don't actually understand the issues is probably low.

it's still discretionary but the definition is not
it's not like they banned him forever or anything

6:57 PM
Some of this just feels like an attempt to characterize Deroir as a "bad guy". Which feels odd to me. You can still rightly say Price was treated unfairly, that ArenaNet shouldn't have fired her, that this is yet another example of the sexism and discrimination inherent in the population. It just reads to me like they felt Price's replies weren't really defensible and so they had to basically say "well, the other guy's just as bad".

I really think we should move on to a different topic of conversation. This has already been discussed a few times, both here and the bridge, and I don't think this is going to lead anywhere new.
This topic has already caused quite a bit of tension here, and I can already see it creating more.

@Unionhawk Really not the capstone we needed. In the interest of moving the conversation, we can talk about the NATO summit.
Apparently Trump is upping his defense spending claim/argument/whatever to 4% of GDP?
He's really bad at this. I'm pretty sure not an insignificant number of people who normally vehemently disagree with Trump were on board with telling the rest of the NATO members to devote 2% of GDP to defense spending.
And he's probably lost most of them by doubling it.

user15026
@Unionhawk This....is not helpful.

user15026
@Yuuki so he's saying everyone has to spend that?

7:12 PM
@Ash Pretty much.
To be honest, I felt that there was merit in pushing the other NATO members to increase defense spending to 2% of GDP. It's what everyone agreed on and so everyone should do that. But now unilaterally claiming that everyone should spend double of that?
Uncalled for and absolutely unnecessary.

user15026
But if we don't spend all the money to defend our borders....then how will we keep the undesirables out

Well, defense spending is usually considered separate from border security.
So if Spain, for example, increased funding for border security, it wouldn't be considered part of their defense spending obligations, IIRC.
Huh. TIL that there's never been an American who held the post of NATO Secretary General and 10 of the 16 Deputy Secretary Generals have been Italian.
> Because NATO's chief military officer, the Supreme Allied Commander Europe, is traditionally an American, the Secretary General has traditionally been a European.
Ah, that's why.

@MadScientist Having your state be on fire continuously for the past century or so is also a bad idea but Pennsylvania's done that too

(wait what is the emoji for one eye and tongue out)

I mean, there still is now but for different reasons.
And possibly not as much.

@GodEmperorDune ;P maybe?

@Ash maybe that's it, it looks much better on twitter

@GodEmperorDune 😜

@TimStone they really don't give a fuck anymore, not that they ever truly did. But there's not even a hint of a plausible explanation in there anymore, it's entirely absurd. The scary thing is that this doesn't seem to matter at all

Yeah :/
A @DemSocialists-backed candidate beat a self-funder in Montgomery County, so a centrist Dem is running as an independent, potentially spoiling the race for her party. https://www.washingtonpost.com/local/md-politics/nancy-floreen-to-run-for-montgomery-county-executive-as-an-independent/2018/07/11/68b37ff8-8506-11e8-8f6c-46cb43e3f306_story.html?utm_term=.84edf45509c8
Someone please locate my eyes as they have rolled out of my head

> Keith Haller, a political pollster and analyst who is based in Montgomery, said Floreen’s candidacy is a rare opportunity for independent voters to have a say in who becomes their top elected official, a decision usually made during the Democratic primary.
... any political analyst worth their salt knows about the spoiler effect

@DylanSheaMusic Please consider this a commitment that I will fund fixing the water in any house in Flint that has water contamination above FDA levels. No kidding.

Also, that article needs to include some more location information.

lmao
only after it being phrased like a challenge

Because there's more than one Montgomery County in the US.

@quartata to be fair, he did donate 2k or so to flint already after being asked nicely on twitter
and tbh if he just pays the money and flint residents get good water, win win
kinda shitty that their taxes and water usage fees don't already cover the safe water but that's a separate issue

The recently pardoned Hammond men have returned to Burns, OR in a private plane owned by Lucas Oil Products dba Lucas Cattle Co.. According to one of the 3%ers involved in the Malheur takeover, Forrest Lucas (Protect the Harvest) provided material support to the militants.
Ahhh :|
(per the thread, Lucas is buddies with Pence 🤷🏼‍♂️)

9:47 PM
3%er?
is that a nazi thing?

They're not rich enough to be 1%ers?

not really
The Three Percenters (also styled 3%ers and III%ers) is an American paramilitary group whose members pledge protestation and armed resistance against attempts to curtail constitutional rights, namely the Second Amendment. The organization's credo depicts a tyrannical US Federal Government, and has been characterized as being ideologically similar to the Oath Keepers.The group's name is derived from the claim that only three percent of the population of the Thirteen Colonies fought against the Kingdom of Great Britain during the American Revolution. Approximately 375,000 people out of the 2.5 million...
other end of the social spectrum

@quartata oh these are the far right militias

yeah but they're crazy libertarians not crazy authoritarians
both suck ass but

@quartata Pretty ironic that they're teaming up with authoritarians though.

NEW: Bill Shine's wife Darla had a radio show on 100 stations where he said women in the military should expect sexual harassment, said sunscreen was "a hoax," said vaccines cause autism, and claimed the flu pandemic should be a government conspiracy. https://www.cnn.com/2018/07/11/politics/kfile-darla-shine-radio-show/index.html
Racist nods, anti-vax nods, anti-feminist nods, sunscreen deniali…wait what?

Technically speaking, she's not wrong in that women in the military should expect sexual harassment. The problem is just leaving it there.
The problem is also not seeing it as a problem.

user15026
How is sunscreen a hoax
