Q: Can access Github via browser but not via git commands

Avery235I work in a bank which seems to be blocking Github (they use svn with internally hosted repos): H:\>git clone https://github.com/torvalds/linux.git Cloning into 'linux'... fatal: unable to access 'https://github.com/torvalds/linux.git/': Could not resolve host: github.com However, I'm able to...

Not something I'd expect you to be asking, but that name I've never seen before.

Don't think its her

Oh God why don't I ever learn to not eat fried stuff and bar snacks

@djsmiley2k Doesn't go by Avery afaik

1:46 PM
Thankfully I'm working remotely today. Or remotely working today. Just semantics.

@MichaelFrank not any more
which is why I found it odd.
@ThatBrazilianGuy or not working, not remotely.

@ThatBrazilianGuy thirsty?

A: How do I deal with the political promotional items in the workplace?

Masked ManNever let go of an opportunity to mind your own business. You have nothing to gain from getting involved in a confrontation over it. Ignore it and move on with your work.

@JourneymanGeek I have stomach issues that, although not terribly serious (never been to the hospital, for instance), can leave me with stomach aches, reflux and other significative discomforts.
Sometimes it will prevent me from sleeping as I'll be up all night, which causes me to behave as a zombie the next day.
(No, I don't mean biting people)

hmmm
Health care is charged there, right?

1:53 PM
We have public health that can range from a bad joke to quite decent
(in terms of the doctors, not the infrastructure usually).

just be aware of Barretts Esophagus...

But it usually involves waiting months and months

I kind of had what you've just discribed
as a kid I always had heartburn, but never knew that's what the burning feeling was (I figured it was hunger, lul)
due to that and me having pyloric stenosis, i ended up basically bringing up stomach acid a lot while sleeping...
cue lots of teeth problems, and the esophagus capable of swallowing things that really shouldn't be.

I managed to get included in my dad's health plan last month for a much smaller fee
> teeth problems

yes....

1:56 PM
Oh boy. Just my four lower frontal teeth are suffering from a few years of recurrences.
So I really need to go to a doctor to check on this.

it'd be odd that it's mostly effecting the front and not back
But I'd ask about GERD.

I've already had an endoscopy done years ago, they found nothing (besides a small abrasion to the stomach surface),

ah ok
that was my next thing

And one where they put a tube on your throat to check if it contracts well enough. also found nothing

Did they do biopsys?

1:59 PM
Not really, but it was years ago, maybe a decade or so

Haha, mine over contracts
it once contracted.... for 3 days straight

And it's cyclic... sometimes I eat all I want and get just a mild discomfort that passes quickly. Sometimes I eat healthy salad stuff, grilled chicken with no oil, rice and get stomach aches. Can't figure a food pattern.

@ThatBrazilianGuy You're really falling apart, aren't you? xD
I had a similar stomach issue in the past.
Lasted about 6 months, then went away.
Got an endoscopy, didn't find anything.

Well, the obvious immediate solution is to eat moderately and see a doctor quickly. My logic conscious brain knows but my subconscious bran just goes "shrug emoji"

I would eat dinner as early as possible.

2:03 PM
🍧
@ThatBrazilianGuy salad gives me acid

Because if I ate dinner at like 6 PM or later, I would get stomach pains at night.

:/
is it when you're less than vertical?
Are you sitting slumped back
and so stomach acid is rising

@Michael I had once a terrifying skin condition on my neck and face that lasted some months, nearly a year, no doctor could treat it (out of the, dunno, 4 that I managed to see), and then it just went away on its own.
Thankfully I have just a couple tiny tiny scars on my nose and lips.
And when I say terrifying let's just say it's better for everyone's stomach I don't describe it.
@djsmiley2k I... never paid much attention to this.

Think about it next time :)

But I do sit all wrong, very wrong very frequently

2:07 PM
If your lower esophagus isn't strong enough
the valve will leak some acid

As in "sit with the middle of my backbone where its end should be" wrong
Which could bring me terrible back problems in the future :(
@djsmiley2k I will.
Also I do need to schedule a doctor
It's just... There's so much stuff I need to take some time off to take care of
This semester I froze my university course for the second time because I was falling behind on it (again)

@ThatBrazilianGuy Yikes :(

And this week I found out a court process that's been dragging for the last (I kid you not) ten years has been archived because... Who the hell knows why?

Sounds like Brazil is kinda sucky :/

@djsmiley2k Ooooooooooooooooh, the Brazilian legal system is definitely kinda sucky.
@djsmiley2k It's been getting worse lately. And with the upcoming elections, the poll leader is basically Hitler.
If he wins I'm seriously considering moving out as soon as possible.

2:15 PM
Careful, we can't talk about Hitler here.
or politics ;)
and definitely not shooting Nazis in the face. (Nazi Zombies are ok).

> GDPR: US news sites unavailable to EU users over data protection rules
Fucks sake

So I can't say "In 1964 Brazil was in a military dictatorship that lasted two decades" because that involves prominent controversial figures, opinions... and also because "politics"?
Okay so I wont say we risk a new "exception state" because people are in the streets claiming the military should "come back"

@CircusCat News just in, EU people don't want to visit US news sites anyway.
Also news just in : Media causes more people to find ways to access materials cut off due to pointless geographic constraints.

I'm surprised @Bob hadn't told it to GDIAF yet

@djsmiley2k But how will you keep up to the with the latest Kardashian gossip?!?!

2:19 PM
@ThatBrazilianGuy God Bless GDPR!

Oh hey Vodafone autocharging me £9.99 for something I didn't consent to

PornPass?

Thanks for nothing GDPR! GDIAF.

@djsmiley2k Sorry, what did you say? Couldn't read it, I'm geofenced.

@djsmiley2k I said didn't consent to

2:20 PM
@CircusCat lul
When is that coming, anyway?

Consent?

(Joke unintended.)
No, the porn pass :P

Didn't know it was a thing.

@ThatBrazilianGuy oh noes

Don't you dare take that out of context and make me look consentist

2:22 PM
@CircusCat wait, you've not heard about the porn pass?!

@djsmiley2k coughtorcough

@CircusCat I was thinking of something more direct, socks proxy + any vpn clients.

I'm not that offput by the whole GDPR dealie, but I'm getting notices from companies I've never heard of

@bertieb Don't worry, they've heard of you.

@ThatBrazilianGuy So it would seem D:

2:29 PM
If there any any native Hindi speakers here, I have a vocabulary question.
What is a/the Hindi word for "copy", as in the following sense? "I made a copy of the letter".

You know, with the latest "we're enforcing rules more strictly" trends and all...
Let's not give them any fuel

I say tell em to shove it.
sharing bandwidth is NICE

Also we were only theoretically discussing those, we would never do such things. Obviously.

Yea
Does that violate a rule?

@FaheemMitha Google Translate

2:35 PM
@djsmiley2k Please. While I do share your frustration on moderators over-reacting, you're threading a fine line here by using those words.
Let's keep it civil and stuff, OK?

@RogUE Sure, but not the most reliable service. I'd rather get input from a Human.

@bertieb I don't know, but very probably, I wouldn't be surprised. Promoting and helping to circunvent "legit" (your view on the legitness might vary) technological restrictions is at the very least a gray area and as a business SE would naturally oppose to it and want to appear to the outside world as opposing to it.

So the only other mention of this company emailing be about GDPR was a URL in a completely unrelated email
Wait what
It came in to my... github address?

2:38 PM
@FaheemMitha That's what I get from Google. Though I am not a native speaker, I have heard this word, I mean the word 'prati', and I think thant's the word you are looking for.

@RogUE Thanks, but I'm guessing that's from Google Translate. Which is a machine.

@ThatBrazilianGuy Frequently debated on meta, true

@bertieb Transifex is a... tool? business? used in translation of some open source stuff. Have you ever participated in the translation of any open source project? Even a single string?
I got an email just like the first line you showed.

@ThatBrazilianGuy Sure, never do anything like that.

@RogUE Ok, I'll check it. Thank you.

2:41 PM
@ThatBrazilianGuy Honestly? Not sure
It's possible
Shouldn't I have other emails mentioning them if so?

Hm. A search for "transifex" shows nothing? I have like 40 emails from them in 5 years.

Also, I'm not sure how I would as I only speak one language
Well, two if you subscribe to the Korben Dallas school of thought
@ThatBrazilianGuy Just what's pictured in the picture/onebox above

Huh, that's weird.

Never had to do that before
We had two weeks like this later year too but in, uh, March? April?
I forget where I was going with that but yeah
Sun is nice

🌦

@bertieb Yeah, only when it's 150 million km away from you, and you are inside an envelop of air.

@RogUE nods

Why cannot I just paste a image in here :(

If you get too close to the sun your trip to space today will not be good

Ah Icarus!
He forgot his space suit.

@djsmiley2k Sunshine..

2:58 PM
@RogUE The film that Professor Brian Cox was the scientific advisor on?
oh yey rainwarning for sat/sun
and it's a bank holiday XD

@djsmiley2k Wiki says so.

I'd like to see a swap, with the actor Brian Cox doing a space show with Dara Ó Briain; and Prof Brian Cox doing Shakespeare

clippy pls

haha

3:02 PM
@djsmiley2k Not bad!

Bob
oh yea, @bertieb, how's the hand?

@Bob Same answer (not bad!), thanks for asking :)

Bob
@bertieb found out how far it's going to recover?

I am finding it slightly tricky to change dressings for obvious reasons
But managing
Not yet

Bob
ah

3:08 PM
Wires come out in uuuuuuuh tenish days

Bob
oof

Bob
do you feel it much?

Since I can take the dressings off y'all can see for yourselves, but definitely wouldn't want to onebox that...

good morning

Bob
3:09 PM
uhm... think I'll pass :P

@ThatBrazilianGuy yeah, it's been an onslaught

@bertieb I'd totally onebox you Bertieb

@Bob Yeah, electric shock-type things from time to time and it's a bit achey at the mo but generally ibuprofen+paracetamol keeps it at bay marvellously (luckily)

Onebox, twobox, threebox, cats be lovin' any box

@CircusCat Ha :P i c wat u did ther
Actually, the cats that hang out around my place don't like boxes :(
Or don't seem to
I put them out for them but they run away

3:11 PM
@bertieb They're probably dogs in disguise

Sneaky devils

Silly wauzers trying to infiltrate the catriarchy

Bob
@bertieb that'd be the nerves then? :S

@CircusCat insert cat barking video here

grrr

3:12 PM
@Bob Aye, most likely- feeling that is feeling better than feeling nothing at all tho

Google Music has a podcast function (yey), it's not usable in the UK (boo!)
waiting for GDPR

<insert stupidsexyflanders.gif>

Bob
@bertieb nothing at all... nothing at all...

:D

stop test
test stop

3:15 PM
HAMMERTIME!

Erf. I'm gonna have to give Hetzner a slap
Nooooo my 1000-day uptime
Killed by a power outage.
At a supposed triple redundant UPS-backed datacentre

Bob
@CircusCat lol. I've been hit by a few OVH and WI power outages

@Bob Never had one in my entire time at OVH

Bob
@CircusCat you're using the RBX ones right?
I'm at BHS

And I was too high to notice it for 1 day 6 hours -_-

Bob
3:22 PM
that's another reason to stay sober...
2

@Bob Last box I had with OVH was in their Strasbourg DC I think

Bob
ah

I personally prefer Gravelines, because lowest latency to the UK.
@Bob I was sober for a whole week and NOTHING interesting happened

Bob
lol
that reminds me I need to buy one of the new SYD servers

> The cause of the failure was a strong voltage reduction in the local power grid. Why it has caused a power failure despite our UPS backups, is still under investigation. Currently, the restoration of the secure operation has top priority.

Bob
3:24 PM
and migrate my existing one there
same specs, 3/4 the price
and I can move to SSD while I'm at it

Seriously guys it's 2018. Power failures because your UPS goes schizo WHILE THE MAIN POWER IS STILL FINE is NOT ACCEPTABLE.

Bob
@CircusCat ehhhhhhhh a brownout isn't exactly fine :P

Fucks sake. ONE THOUSAND DAYS it took me to achieve that 1000 day uptime.

Bob
@CircusCat you should start snapshotting every month so you can restore if it goes down :P

@Bob UPS components frying because brownout? C'mon. YOU HAD ONE JOB

Bob
3:26 PM
true
heck I'd expect a cheap UPS to handle brownouts
let alone a DC one

@Bob I'd considered that, but a similar thing caused me to lose a 30TB ZFS array because the in-memory state of the disk cache didn't match the on-disk state of the data.

Bob
oof
write a kernel module that fakes uptime? :P

@Bob That's cheating.
> May 24, 2018 4:36:00 PM CEST
2886 "My server is down" support tickets in queue.

good idea though XD
but writing drivers is really hard isn't it?

@Bob I mean to be honest, it's Linux.
You could just echo a random value directly into the memory address used for storing the uptime counter if you're root.
I meant echo but I said cat because I'm biased towards cats?
> The analysis of the UPS infrastructure is still running at full speed. Some parts of the power-subdistributors are affected and were partly damaged by the strong voltage reduction in the local power grid.

Some of the affected UPS parts can be replaced using existing spare parts by technicians of the UPS system manufacturer. Other spare parts are in the delivery phase and we are still working at full speed on restoring reliable control operation. More detailed information on when the secure regular operation in the affected data centers will be restored (DCs 7/10/12) will probably only b

3:33 PM
you could do it with cat
2

> Our technicians have managed to restore secure operation in DC12. The UPS is fully operational there.
Our technicians have managed to restore secure operation in DC10. The UPS is fully operational there.
So mine, 7, apparently still has a fried UPS

Bob
@CircusCat could you dump the cache before snapshotting? ... maybe not

Not that it matters, because apparently a brownout causes the UPS to fry itself so, what's the freaking point of having one.

cat << EOF > /sys/class/uptime-counter-thingy
> really long
> I mean, *weeks*
> EOF

Bob
pivot_root to ramdisk, unmount, flush cache, snapshot

3:36 PM
@Zanna Weeks? Amateur. My uptime was measured in years

haha I've never run a server. I turn my laptop off every day. Sometimes twice!

Bob
poor laptop

Sometimes I reboot just to see what the new kernel is like

May 20 at 23:20, by qasdfdsaq
user image
And that was a windows box

Sometimes I reboot for even sillier reasons, like to see if it's possible to fix a broken libc from busybox
ahh the frivolous life of a single user system

3:39 PM
May 20 at 23:22, by qasdfdsaq
I'm pretty sure I've forgotten the password to it, so if I restart I won't be able to get back in. Pray it doesn't crash...

@CircusCat is that 530 days?
@CircusCat lol

Bob
@CircusCat encrypted disk?

@Zanna Yes
@Bob Yes

Are you cat?

Bob
...welp
4

3:40 PM
I'm pretty sure the keypass file with the decryption password is on another VM on the same host
Right now I'm not sure if I should bother bringing anything back up before Hetzner's fixed the UPS. Not that the UPS actually does anything...
This reminds me of an incident in one of my old jobs where the DC went down because the Main/Backup supply switch got stuck during a UPS test.
> DC guys: Systems will be at minimal risk while we run a routine UPS test.
<switches supply over to UPS>
UPS looks fine. Test passed.
<switches supply back to mains>
Uhh guys... I think the switch is stuck.
Guys?
.... Anyone?
<15 minutes power remaining>
HALP
<panic because "free air" cooling system isn't hooked up to UPS, so cooling goes down>
GUYS????
Me: Hits the controlled shutdown button, goes home early.
By "Controlled shutdown button" I mean something like

for n in <cluster nodes>
do
ssh -t <node n> "poweroff" &
done

lol

@bertieb Me too, I think that's sorta the point
@jokerdino Yes
@Bob: Any of this stuff look interesting to you? oneprovider.com/dedicated-servers/sydney-australia
