@sv. I think Answers for Ganga question do answer question if we consider Puranas as history.

@TheDestroyer But Puranas (scripture) are mainly mythology. Less history. Both answers are citing mythological events from scripture. Not historical events. Anyway, I ask you to take a second look at senshin's comment.
@VineetMenon That is not a duplicate. OP is asking when (historically) the Ganga was deemed sacred, not why (scripturally) the Ganga is deemed sacred. — senshin Jun 22 '14 at 6:29
Kalpa/Manvantara/Yuga is a Puranic concept (not a historical one). And OP is talking about Aryans, Sindhu river valley, Sarasvati drying up and then people moving from the Indus basin to Gangetic plains. Your answer is basically saying that Ganga just arrived on Earth one fine day and became sacred. You are trying to mix mythology with history. Therefore, this is a wrong answer to the question OP asked. See comment by 'senshin' (ex-mod) below the question where he clarifies this particular question should NOT be answered using scriptures in the way they are normally used on this site. — sv. @sv. But in one perspective Puranas are history.
@sv. If we consider Puranas as history, the answers do answer. Also, OP has some assumptions in question IMO.
@sv. We can ask opinions of other users to come to a conclusion.

@TheDestroyer What if the majority opinion is wrong? If those mythology-based answers are allowed we will now have two questions which are not dup. and yet the answers are same. This doesn't make sense. Not good for the site. If you decide to keep those answers, I'd recommend closing the question itself or migrate it to History.SE. Accepting the question and then allowing mythology-based answers is unfair.

Then how do you decide when there are two views? There are users on this site who believe Puranas are history. OP should decide what he meant by history. An edit from him would be better.

Yes. Same/similar answer can be posted when questions are entirely different and it is not recommended to close questions based on answers.

@TheDestroyer 'how do you decide when there are two views' - this is when mods step in and take a stand. If 10 users take a stand against a mod action, will the mod reverse the action even if he's right? He won't. Same applies here. It's not what users think is right. It's what the mod(s) think is right given the situation. We have an ex-mod who knew exactly what the OP was talking about. Then we're discussing the whole issue again because the mod is no longer active.
@TheDestroyer "There are users on this site who believe Puranas are history" - agree, but when an ex-mod has clearly stated Puranas should NOT be used for this particular question. The issue has been settled. They can use Puranas for other questions but not this one. They can hold on to their personal beliefs, that's fine.

@sv. Mods are also users and they have views. What is correct for me may be wrong for you and vice versa. For me Puranas are history books and for you imaginations of some people. As per that i should reject the flags. Same could be case with ex mod.

sv.
@TheDestroyer Yes, mods have personal beliefs too. But when taking actions on posts that are specifically asking for historical context they need to keep personal views aside.

@TheDestroyer @sv. - Hiii 💐

@sv. Again, question has many assumptions. Answers give different views. Answers say historically from Puranas.
@SwiftPushkar Hi Bro.

sv.
@SwiftPushkar Hi

4:44 PM
@TheDestroyer Yes 🙂 How are you. We haven't talked in long time. Nice to see you on chat 🍫👍👍

sv.
@TheDestroyer Assumptions have been settled, edits are also accepted, edits made are inline with discussion that happened in comments below the question. No need to ask OP again after 4 years.

@sv. Yup , what's up 🍫 2 u also
@TheDestroyer Ohh grt. now u r fee ,we can chat a lot 😀 @ChinmaySarupria - Hiii 💐

sv.
@SwiftPushkar What's up with Shivaji statue in Mumbai/Maharashtra dude? Rs 3,600 crore project, really?

@SwiftPushkar Hello, how is it going? Seeing you after a long long time!

sv.
:44551881 congrats on your sister's marriage.

4:48 PM
@sv. Again, "historically" is vague term here. What's wrong if we allow two views?? Discuss with others too. It has an assumption that Aryans moved to Central India.
@sv. Thanks.
@SwiftPushkar Yes.

@TheDestroyer Hi, glad to have you back!

@ChinmaySarupria Thanks.

@ChinmaySarupria - Yes , Very well just beating the summer season🌞. Whts the temperature over there @Rajasthan.

sv.
@TheDestroyer Let me do a meta post about 'history' tag. We need to settle this for once and all. If people think Valmiki, Vyasa, Hanuman, etc. are still roaming around then we have a big problem with the 'history' tag.

@SwiftPushkar 43 Max

@sv. We can't get proper answer here. See meta question on mythology. Proposal of getting it removed got highest votes as users think all stories are real historical events.
@SwiftPushkar how's temperature in Pune?

@TheDestroyer Varying somewhat but around 36-39 , relatively cool this year. But it's within city limits , it's much cooler outside city , nearby rural places.

sv.
@TheDestroyer To me it looks like people are in denial ... they don't even want to fix the issue. They want it to remain vague. So their cherished beliefs are safe?

@sv. Everyone does that to support "what they believe".

@sv. - What's the discussion is about ?

Q: Historically, when (and why) did Ganga become a holy river? Is it after Sarasvati dried up?

NullPoiиteяAccording to the Nadistuti Sukta (Sanskrit: नदिस्तुति सूक्त), "hymn of praise of rivers", which is hymn 10.75 of the Rigveda: There were 25 rivers and the most important was the Sindhu river and the sacred river was the Sarasvati since the Vedic people were living in the valleys of the Sindhu ri...

@TheDestroyer Yes, that's fine, but it doesn't mean we go write Puranic stuff under a post with 'history' tag asking for a historical perspective.

@TheDestroyer - Ok , will take a look 🙂

Q: Why aren't all NAAs treated equally on this site?

sv.The question Historically, when (and why) did Ganga become a holy river? Is it after Sarasvati dried up? has two answers which are written from a purely Puranic point of view and does not address OP's question in the slightest. Despite flagging these two answers are still not deleted. No explanat...

@SwiftPushkar see discussion in comments there

@sv. - Yes , already read your question.

sv.
@SwiftPushkar Ok, so this is continuation of that...what do you think about it? Delete those answers or keep them?

@sv. - Honestly what I think is all puranas is somewhat history , for e.g. if we look at most famous purana i.e. Bhagvata purana most of the contents is exactly same as Mahabharata , all the topics of puranas are related to itihaasa , so both are closely related ,and both MB -Ramayana & Puranas can be used as substitute ,Even though puranas is mythology , (this is my view) . But if expert point of view is different.
@sv. - Regarding the deletion , i think let's keep them as it is for sometime , if possible we can ask OP'S to revise the answer from historical perspective.

5:17 PM
@SwiftPushkar I think Puranas have some historical events, but do you think all events in Puranas are historical?
@SwiftPushkar that's already done .. see the comments .. so we are at the mercy of answerers?
@SwiftPushkar Why are some answers deleted by mods? Why aren't they waiting for them to be updated...by OP or someone else?

@sv. No certainly not , but what I found out is all their philosophical content (except some more explanation and some stories)is very similar to MB.But technically both texts are different.
@sv. Yes , I think Mods only can explain more about this to you. And i think deleted answer is link only also ,but others are not

sv.
@SwiftPushkar 'philosophical content' - ok, but what if answers use Puranas to explain history?

5:41 PM
@sv. No ,i think not. The answer's should be from historical essays etc. I agree. But even if some users have written answers from puranas,they are not eligible to be deleted unless they differ too much from the core topic of question. Still this is my personal view , and if the site rules strictly is not allowing that ,then they are eligible to be removed ,but with informing and giving time to OP'S.
@sv. There are lots of NAA here . So i think it's the problem . And we have to tackle those at the time of graduation also.
@sv. -BTW will go 2 😴 ,u know weather of pune well though. We will discuss the issue later on 💐👍👍 Bye ,Good day.

sv.
@SwiftPushkar Ok, will respond to you later. Bye. Good night.
