@Zanna I wrote a new rationale to support your longstanding suggestion to synonomize with .

Darrin Thomas asked me a fun question by commenting on one of my posts. He says... "How do you ask so many questions so close together without losing rep?" I know that SE blocks some accounts with a history of bad questions, but I was not aware of any mechanism on SE that decreases rep for asking questions. Does such a thing exist?

5:28 AM
I doubt very much there is such a mechanism. Perhaps he means they might get downvoted for some reason.
@Nic thanks! :)

Nic
In unrelated news, I made a big tasty teriyaki stir fry yesterday with two whole heads of broccoli. I can never have too much broccoli.

@Nic as a sidenote, I use CW regularly for answers that are not my own work, by which I mean, where somebody has posted a good answer in a comment or inside their own question and vanished or declined to answer.
In such cases the information can be posted as a CW answer with blockquoting, and the creator can solicit an "upvote on my behalf" from other users (I do this in chat). Here, the benefit of using CW is avoiding reputation gain (though you do get any applicable badges, apart from tag badges).
@Nic did you eat it all yourself?

Nic
No, I had a partner for both the cooking and the eating. Food is better that way. :)

I used to eat loads of broccoli every day, but now I probably eat it ~once a week. Yesterday I made some pasta with leek and broccoli with super easy creamy sauce made from silken tofu, basil, pine nuts, walnuts & garlic. Aim was to cook something non-spicy for my mum haha
@Nic agreed. I struggle to bother cooking anything only for myself

Nic
5:45 AM
I haven't worked with silken tofu at all. I should, it would probably up my sauce game. But when I'm in the store my eyes always stop to rest on the extra firm smoked tofu. (yum)
As far as cooking for myself... I live in a cohousing community with about 50 other adults and we often share cooking/cleaning duties at dinnertime. It certainly helps to motivate!

That's cool :)

Q: Please vote on tag synonyms

NicPlease remember to vote on tag synonyms if you are an experienced user. Currently we have a suggestion to synonomize micronutrients with vitamins-and-minerals that has been awaiting votes for more than a year. If you're new like me, you might not be aware that synonyms are approved when they rec...

Q: Should tags be written in the plural or singular form?

NicI noticed that many of our popular tags are currently written in the plural form. substitutes micronutrients dairy-products sports supplements fats This came to my attention while I was thinking about tag wikis and excerpts. I was looking at tags on ServerFault for examples of how they write ta...

6:29 AM
@Nic Instead of having a separate discussion for every tag synonym request, we can have a single post for synonyms and merges. For voting on a tag synonym, we must have a score of 5 on that tag which is not possible for many users because we have less activity on main. If there is a single post, users can vote on it and mods can synonymise after a discussion.

Nic
Yeah, I think that could be a good idea. I've seen some other sites do posts like that on a yearly basis so you don't end up being totally cluttered with old content.

7:03 AM
@Nic I'm sceptical about the soy-bashing. Feels a bit like electric car-bashing

Nic
@Zanna I'm more than just skeptical about soy-bashing, I'm actually irritated. And that's why I asked new questions about soy, to handle it in proper StackExchange style and properly dismantle the bashing.
@Zanna Continuing on the CW thread, I discovered we actually have one answer already posted as CW! vegetarianism.stackexchange.com/a/198/1236

@Nic yeah... two possible uses of CW are
- when you want to invite others to contribute to your answer
- when you're not sure about the answer
the latter is to be strongly discouraged haha
the former, in my experience, is sadly ineffective

Nic
That's the feeling I'm starting to get :)
@Zanna I'm not sure I get your point here. In which cultures is vegetarianism historically or currently exclusive of both eggs and dairy? And with regard to our site specifically, this tag is intended to differentiate from vegan diets. If a diet is vegetarian, but not vegan, and does not include eggs or dairy, then what is it?

For example, in India, eggs are not considered vegetarian
afaik, India has by far the largest population of vegetarians

Nic
Indeed. Perhaps I didn't put enough emphasis on the "and/or" in this sentence: "A diet pattern that includes dairy (lacto) and/or eggs (ovo) ..."

7:16 AM
I see the and/or, but you go on to say it's the same as lacto-ovo...

Nic
s|-|/|
A diet pattern that includes dairy (lacto) and/or eggs (ovo), also known as lacto/ovo vegetarian.
or just remove the last clause entirely, it's not really necessary.
Nice, thanks for fixing my suggested edit!

wow, thanks so much for all the great tag wiki work. So awesome

Nic
There's a few I've been meaning to work on for a while. It actually feels way harder than writing questions and answers.

I only improved one other suggestion so the rest need a second approval. Only Alexander Rossa and mods are likely to do that... hopefully one of them will stop be soon
@Nic I wrote a lot of tag wikis on AU before I got 20k. I agree, it's very hard work
I mean, I still write/edit some, but it's easier when somebody is going to check it imho!

Nic
And for so little rep :D 😜

7:28 AM
hahaha yeah. But on AU I learned so much technical stuff writing tag wikis I was able to write many answers as a result of my research

Nic
And regarding your suggestion of burning for being too broad... maybe we could burn too?
Health is the only thing we've actually codified as being on-topic for the site. :P And we already blacklisted vegetarianism.
Actually, we really need to replace veg*n in that usage. Who has the power to change this page? Diamond mods?

@Nic I think of them as totally separate things. I buy Clearspring silken tofu which is stored at ambient temperature and has a shelf life of ~1 year. I usually have 3 or 4 cartons on hand. To make sauce with silken tofu, I just put it in the blender with the other sauce ingredients. No need to cook or anything. It's also great in desserts - you can make a cheesecake filling just by mixing it with something that will set or thicken it, like chocolate
@Nic I think they can do that yeah
@Nic haha maybe... I feel slightly less sceptical about the scope of health for some reason
oh I keep saying sceptical when I mean "negative in some poorly defined way"

Nic
7:46 AM
I do think we have a slight tag overload there. Using something like implies which implies which implies .
Although it's a very nice tree, we probably don't want a tree.
I like having a tag that is co-present with all the vitamin and mineral questions, so a glance at Related Tags will show you which vitamins and minerals are asked about most. It's not really necessary, it's just nice. Currently I prefer in that role, but it could be anything.

it's fun to grapple with the tag situation on an immature site
yeah I don't think we want a tree

Nic
Then expands the scope to include macros, but... maybe we don't need that because there are so few macros and they're quite well known. (Also weirdly we have zero questions about carbohydrates.)

um, how many upvotes did you just get?
I just hesitated to upvote another one of your posts thinking they might end up getting auto-reversed at this rate

Nic
I saw upvotes on 2 questions and 2 answers
what's auto-reversed?

I can do one more then
serial voting behaviour is not allowed
if one user votes for another user many times in a short space of time, all the votes are reversed by a script that runs every morning

Nic
7:55 AM
Oh. Does the site announce when bad behaviour is detected? I often vote a lot.

I don't know what the voter sees because I've never had my votes reversed. I've never done serial upvoting because there's never been a situation like this where one user posted so many posts while I was away and I then came back and wanted to upvote a large number of them

Nic
blush

I didn't get any warnings about upvoting while I was upvoting your posts
other people have serially upvoted my posts on AU numerous times (newbies often don't realise this isn't allowed - and people have the wrong idea about voting - they think it's a reward for the poster!)
Only once were any of the votes reversed
I'm pretty sure the threshold is around 7 votes. I'll stop at 5 to be on the safe side

Nic
"When the system detects this pattern, all of the votes cast from that user to the user affected are reversed, and a "voting corrected" event is added to the affected user's reputation history to indicate what has occurred." meta.stackexchange.com/questions/126829/…
so it should be evident when it happens

@Zanna when I said morning, I meant UTC morning (Stack Exchange morning)
yes it is visible in the reputation tab. But I don't know if there are any other notifications

Nic
8:02 AM
Further down it clarifies "There is no automated ... notifications"

ah, thanks :)
I think I can actually answer one of your recent questions \o/ but it might take me a while to write everything I want to say and do some research :)

Nic
I look forward to it!
