This is too silly and wide to post as a question, looking for some help trying to pin down the issue... Server A hosts apache, Server B runs mysql (both rh7). For some reason, when loading one site (this is a test setup where sites developed elsewhere get tested before being deployed to production), something happens that makes B block all connections from A (but not from elsewhere), for 10 minutes. After 10 minutes, things go back to normal

any idea where can I start looking for this?

the site is a php monstrosity, but produces no errors or relevant warnings

mysql keeps chugging away happily accepts connections from other IPs (but not from Server A, for 10 minutes)

for 10 minutes, you can't even ping B from A (but you can ping and connect normally to B from anywhere else)

is it running a massive query?

not that I can see

but even if it were...

where could I see a record of this block being enacted?

maybe on the DB server logs?

might be a case of you having to step through the PHP line by line

but mysql is still working

I can connnect to mysql from a different machine

it appears to be network related, not mysql related. During the 10 minute block I can't even ping Server B from Server A.

the developer can't really test in this environment, so their response is going to be "it works in my machine".

we had a PHP app time out because DNS took too long to respond

but set at /etc/hosts

so an IP for all intents and purposes

change it to an IP in the application

It could be anything.

It could be a saturated network dropping packets.

It could be you've hit a host connection limit.

If it's an iptables rule, nothing will be logged unless you explicitly enable logging within that rule.
