Q: Poems having similar themes to 'Dolphins' by Carol Ann Duffy

DeeWhat poems can I compare to 'Dolphins' by Carol Ann Duffy, such that their themes coincide but the message conveyed is (slightly or majorly) different?

@ChristopheStrobbe OK, I got an answer back: a good starting point for Le Guin would be either the Earthsea series (epic fantasy) or The Word for World is Forest (which is more science fiction). As Gareth said, the Earthsea books should be read in order.
(I always thought it was called The Word for World is Wood, which would be even more tongue-twisting. But apparently it's forest not wood.)
@Ash Whaaaaat.
This got self-deleted but seems like a good question. @BESW @Christophe @Gareth Anyone else want to cast undelete votes?

@heather I saw your comment mentioning Gnooks as a good place for literature recommendations. Fancy posting about that as an answer here?

@Randal'Thor sure
okay, done.

Thanks! :-D
We have a few of these "community resource" threads somewhere in the mire of meta which don't get updated very often.
(wonder if a tag might help there ...)

Finished Jude the Obscure.
That took a heck of a lot longer than reading a book usually takes me.
For contrast, I started and finished Douglas Adam's The Long Dark Tea-Time of the Soul today.

@Mithrandir Congrats!
So what do you think?
Did it live up to its reputation as an emotional gutwrencher?

@Randal'Thor Yeah, it's pretty crazy. I think the RWA is looking into if they can challenge it, I know they're reaching out to IP lawyers about it

@Randal'Thor It was definitely more of an emotional read than most of what I read.

Q: Why was no Nobel Prize for Literature awarded in 1935?

tardigradeThe Swedish Academy has just announced that as a result of recent scandals and associated resignations within the Academy, no prize for Literature will be awarded for 2018. I am curious about this part of the article: The honour has not been awarded on seven occasions since its launch in ...

@Randal'Thor What? It's five different questions rolled into one, making it ripe for bad answers because a good answer would have to be able to deal with all five questions equally well.

does anyone here have a copy of layamon's brut?

@Mithrandir yeah, i actually need a physical copy =/ i'm writing a paper and a physical copy would be preferred, so i need a page number for a quote.

Ah. Then I've got nothing, sorry :P

@Mithrandir I don't suppose you happen to have a copy of The Peoples of Middle Earth?

10:12 PM
@heather Unfortunately not. I've been trying, it's like the only Tolkien work on Middle Earth I don't have.

yeah, i can't get ahold of volumes 6 - 12 of HoME either, and they're $12 each on Amazon, which would add up rather fast. My best moment was finding the first five as a box set still shrink wrapped for $10 at a used bookstore but i haven't found any of the later ones since.

Q: Why are there penguins in the subconscious?

MithrandirWhile reading Douglas Adam's The Long Dark Tea-Time of the Soul, I came across this: She passed the time quietly in a world of her own in which she was surrounded as far as the eye could see with old cabin trunks full of past memories in which she rummaged with great curiosity, and sometimes ...
