Hello @Greg
Hello @prasanna

@jrg that's fine

time to hunt for the irc log.

@AmithKK.. hi

@MarcoCeppi Awesome
@prasanna Are you a malayalee :D

12:16 PM
hum.. yeah..

@JorgeCastro Can we only have 2 presenters?

@marco did you type them out during the session or did you have them prepared?

@jokerdino He was sending it at real fast speeds
I doubt that he typed
@jokerdino Were you not at the session?

he would have typed them at some point of time.
no, i wasn't at the session

@jokerdino Right
Hello @Brett

12:27 PM
@jokerdino I prepared about 70% of it
the rest was free flow

right, thanks.
@jrg @amith we have just about 48 hours. rings bell

grrr. has anyone gotten python27.dll loading properly in wine(as a resource for something that builds against python)
used to work, i don't know if i'm overlooking something or what

Also sad, stagnant since the Intrepid days.

12:38 PM
Since when was XKCD one boxed??

Not killing enough time on the chat? Want more useless things to do? Like flashing colours and 1980's games? Well have I got The perfect thing for you!

Was anyone tracking Ubuntu heavily in 2008? It does seem odd to imagine there was less buzz then than there is now...

@jokerdino it was one of the first

wow, i totally didn't know that... :/

12:40 PM
@jokerdino God... I have never liked a single tumblr page, and now suddenly it's huge?
That's the worst news since twitter replaced RSS.

yeah, i don't know why it is so popular..
the only thing I liked about Tumblr was I can use markdown.
but the animated GIFs killed all the fun.
@rlemon i never understood the game! Boo

@jokerdino watch the colours flash by... remember the order they flash in... click it back

@rlemon Challenge Accepted

it flashes red, red, green, blue, blue, red, yellow.
click red, red, green, blue, blue, red, yellow.

@rlemon One suggestion
Make it start only when the page is loaded

12:44 PM
ok got it. thanks

ie. Im on that tab

@AmithKK hehe it was a 25 minute i'm killing time writing something to kill time kinda deal.
now my coffee is ready and my updates are done.

@rlemon Oh and One question
Can I have javascript play a song only when the user is on the tab

Desktop Dungeons: for your three-minute roguelike fix. Behold the wonders of HTML5!
(If I'm not productive right now, no one else should be!!)

@JacobJohanEdwards: stop getting me in trouble.
:D

12:50 PM
Hello @prasad

I hate you all!!

@AmithKK probably...

you noticed me, thanks and hello
I've got a bad connection today! down 50KBps!

Aw :-(

okok gotta stop looking at memes

12:58 PM
yay for ugly hacks. create-suspended, inject the dll into the process in wine, resume process works. ugly, but works

hi guys (and all the girls!)!
anyone knows if there's a debian live cd?
testing, unstable, ... me no care.

haven't tested it at all, but it seems like what you're looking for

askubuntu.com/questions/129832/12-04-not-an-option I'm very sure this is a dupe, but I can't for the life of me find the dupe to flag against

@aking1012 thanks a bunch. this room is better than google. :P

@htorque most of the images i see there are stale...but they have the tools to build one. or i could be overlooking something

1:05 PM
worst case: i install it in a vm - so, not really a problem. :-)

I read "worst case: i install it in vim". Hot damn, post your .vimrc!

Found it!

Q: Update manager doesn't offer an upgrade from 11.10 to 12.04

SyedSo I have Ubuntu 11.10 installed on my pc, and I want to upgrade to Ubuntu 12.04. When I check for any new updates it doesn't show any upgrades to 12.04. How can I fix this? Thanks!

\o/

@aking1012 my .vimrc looks like this:
(EOF)

1:08 PM
sorry, me no use vim

ditto
i use gedit and eclipse
and nano!

thanks god he's not alone

"VIM! NOOOOO, EMACS!" - "guys, relax, you are both wrong!" :D

I like driving with a keyboard, but I also like intuitive interfaces...

I use ed and cat.

1:14 PM
After a few years of use, I'm grown skeptical on its benefits for coding versus plain Gedit (although :!compile % is great) but vim can be useful as a "middle level" text edit scripting solution. When I have to perform some very intricate operation on thousands of lines of text, vim macros often do the job easier than awk.

Your lucky @jrg isnt here @aking1012

ok.

Development is 90% thought, 10% editors. Writing, on the other hand, involves very little per-line manipulation, making vim's modal natural superfluous and even counter-productive.
Bah

@ChanHoSuh What was that lightweight browser again?

@jokerdino elinks

1:16 PM
is it lighter than lynx?

no
or use wget and cat

@AmithKK we've already had that discussion. we agreed we like different things

oh dear, i completely forgot about debian with its cd1-cd100 images :D

I used to mock people talking about Ubuntu.

oO

1:20 PM
And then I drifted into car racing.

hey @psusi - a reference on that mov edi,edi thing we were talking about the other day: dvlabs.tippingpoint.com/blog/2008/08/21/…

go away with assembler, please. :D

I am trying to figure out where exactly @YiJiang lives.
Might show up at his door step one day :D
See, I am so bored.

you do like stalking, right? :P
always interested in where people live ;)

perhaps I do. I can't make up my mind on that.

1:26 PM
debian offers: install / graphical install. choosing the latter already makes me feel too stupid for debian. :P

@jokerdino somewhere around maps.google.ca/…
no one can hide from rlemon...

That's quite close to where I live ;)
about 10 KM, if you are right.

@rlemon Wrrrrrrrrong

assuming he lives on campus... and i've found the correct linked in profile... (he's 19... this profile is a student from Singapore with the same name and who is in school from 2010 - 2014... (he would be 18 starting university... soooo)
bah
good guess.

Is there any reason to believe any router won't work with Ubuntu?
1
Q: Will an AT&T Mobile Broadband router work?

user58925My work is considering getting me a mobile broadband service with AT&T. Will it work in Ubuntu 12.04? Are there any specific broadband modems that will not work in Ubuntu 12.04? any help is greatly appreciated.

1:30 PM
@jokerdino You know, for a island of 42km wide, 10km is a pretty big margin
@rlemon Not me. Also, why would you point to NUS' Outram Park campus?

10 km was inclusive of the uncertainty. G Maps showed me much less than that.

@YiJiang i made my best guess that linked in was you.. then have to assume you're living on campus or near it.. so I looked up the campus address from the website... thats what it gave me.

ubiquity owns debian's graphical installer :-o

like i said... it was a guess.

NUS has its primary campus at Kent Ridge

1:33 PM
then their website is not user friendly.

@YiJiang There is no info in your FB profile. Pfft

You know where I study you creepy internet stalker :P

Other than your school. Bah

If you get the correct person that is :P

ohh i see.... i must have hit that links (back on their website...)

1:34 PM
I can tell for sure that IS you.

Dude, he won't fall for that. Come on!

@YiJiang are you "Liu Yi Jiang" or just Yi Jiang?

@rlemon Neither :P

Y U NO PUT REAL NAME ON SE

1:36 PM
you know, I am studying in ACS (I) :P

I have a first name, but it's not Liu
@rlemon This is my real name :D

so you do goto this school?
ffs now i'm just on a mission to find you on the internet.

no.

is it jiang yi or yi jiang? always so confusing

@rlemon It's not

1:37 PM
lol, i'm on a mission to stalk everyone! i got jrg's address and phone number :P muahahaha

Can I link your Fb profile? :D

@jokerdino I'd rather not
@htorque Yi Jiang. That's my last name.

lemon is my last name. r is my first.
you pronounce it like a pirate..
Arrrrrrrrrrrrrr lemon.

arrr

I'm calling you Lemoner for the rest of your life

1:39 PM
lemon head wasn't a pirate, though. :P

must. share. the. skills.
oh, what happened? o.O
i am going to get myself banned. for sure.

@AmithKK Seems like I asked you not to do that.

BBL

LOL

Could someone please, please correct me if I'm wrong here? askubuntu.com/questions/129350/…

1:41 PM
You probably scared him off :P

the lemonator was always a favorite of mine.

@JacobJohanEdwards should and do are two different things, but technically you're right

the router's web interface could check the user agent for "linux" and deny access!
2

@htorque Isn't user agent an HTTP thing? Does it exist at the level of TCP/IP packets?

hehe, i meant for configuring the router
it should work like you described
i never really heard of incompatible routers

1:46 PM
@JacobJohanEdwards I've seen weird interop problems(a linksys router with a belkin card) where it sort of works and eventually stuff just goes wooly, but it SHOULD just work. I might add something about sticking to one vendor though

my router runs on linux, so i hope it works with ubuntu :D

Thanks for the insight! @aking1012 What do you mean about sticking to one vender?

If I'm implementing a home network, I use all belkin or all linksys or all X. Pick one and use all the same.
Linksys Belkin interop I have specifically seen fail(on windows too)

@aking1012 Thanks

np

1:54 PM
hm, why is debian kernel debug info only half the size of ubuntu's kernel debug info?

because with debian, you're supposed to have wetware so computer kernel debug goes straight to your kernel for rapid analysis

g0t theme problems? :P

not much...too much

@rlemon This is why I have hot-peppers growing in my relatively small back patio

2:03 PM
dammit, systemtap works in debian testing, not in ubuntu. anyways, i got what i needed, @aking1012 thanks again for pointing me to the debian images. :-)

@htorque np

I have tomatoes and herbs on my balcony and onions and hot peppers in my mini greenhouse.

well that and hot peppers are like an oil change for your sinuses

habaneros for breakfast?

i put tabasco in my coffee. the peppers are for dinner

2:07 PM

@Prasad that's one dedicated wife

@aking1012 lol ya

morning all

morning

guys, is it possible to use 10.04 repositories for 10.10 (because it is no longer supported)

2:13 PM
don't. it's bad for you

@aking1012 please tell me why?

if you have to ask if you can do it, you're not prepared to deal with the problems that can come from it. use 10.04 with the repos from 10.04.

It would be better to just go down for a year to 10.04 or move up to 12.04 and stay with LTS releases of Ubuntu

mmm, ok. thanks
12.04 breaks easily, isn't it? this 10.10 is reliable..... Is there a way to install gnome 2 on 12.04

Can someone on 12.04 run a df -h and paste the output?

2:27 PM

let's see who uses 12.04......

lol
I use lvm's though

you do...
do you got any idea to install gnome2?

Hi

Not really, sorry
sup Dave

2:30 PM
emailed a guy who's working on the new synaptics package and told him about my problem

ok,

He replied with "try increasing the value of HorizHysteresis and VertHysteresis using synclient."
:D
how to do that?
linux user for approx. 1 month, so excuse my dump questions

have you looked at the man page for synclient?
man synclient

@Prasad don't. if you want a gnome2-like interface on 12.04 either follow the tutorials on this site or just apt-get install gnome-panel

I don't see why anyone would want to go to gnome2 myself since I love where Ubuntu is going with this

2:36 PM
@ruffEdgz Unity or gnome 3. I like unity but, you saw my problem that day bro, but unity does not support effects like this 10.10 do!, and it's not fast like 10.10 on my PC (old-Gold)
@aking1012 is cinnamon=gnome2 ??

hmppppfff... one can probably skip backing up ten VM snapshots.... aaaaaaa

@Prasad just don't. cinnamon breaks frequently as people complain about. gnome-panel installation and switching back and forth works fine for me

cinnamon is a gnome shell fork afaik?

yes it is. amit said it was broken for him on 12.04 yesterday

it's definitely no gnome 2. gnome 2 is dead. long live gnome 2! :D

2:40 PM
@Prasad I hear ya about a lot of that.

Bounty offered: System completely hangs sometimes on an Asus X54H http://askubuntu.com/questions/123938/system-completely-hangs-sometimes-on-an-asus-x54h?atw=1 #grub2

> Need to get 657 MB of archives.

@ruffEdgz, I was smokin a ciggarete, sry

seriously, why are ubuntu kernel debug packages so big? :-o that was 250mb in debian.

back now
I'm on there page but I can't see nothing there related to horiz and vert

2:42 PM
huh, so /tmp doesn't get mounted as a tmpfs anymore?

doesn't look like it

ati?

is this the DE you guys suggest me to use everyday?

@Prasad complain about the nvidia driver some more. it'll help

2:44 PM
@Prasad YES!
@MarcoCeppi ??
> tmpfs on /tmp type tmpfs (rw,noatime,mode=1777)
did that change?

well, it's in my fstab

sorry guys my connection is the connection - I was going to tell this. are you guys suggesting me to use this DE everyday?

2:47 PM
for real, it's gone!
so... tmp is just on the hard disk then?

@Prasad 10.04 or 12.04. In the question you posted about that screenshot, you said it was on resume from suspend. Disable suspend. Problem solved.

@aking1012 alright, or i can remove my graphics card and use onboard intel graphics, do you find it crazy?

now you're just complaining and found your way to my ignore list

hm, there's also no longer an entry for /proc in the fstab

@aking1012 am I ? sorrrrrrrrrrrrryyyyyyyyyyy, delete back your memory :-) I won't ask anything like that one OK :-)

2:52 PM
that's what you get for upgrading instead of fresh installs :P

@ruffEdgz, found it, thanks for help. Will restart ubuntu to see the effects

none            1.9G  1.4M  1.9G   1% /run/shm
I can't be wrong.

@Dave awesome... hope it works

@aking1012 Knock, knock. am I in the list?

@ruffEdgz, it doesn't work. I mean, I type in the terminal synclient HorizHysteresis=20
and synclient VertHysteresis=20 after that to verify the value I type synclient and I see the values changed
restarting Ubuntu the values roll back to default values which are "8"

3:01 PM
@Dave when you changed the values, did it fix your problem?

Will affect the touchpad without restarting Ubuntu?

sure, if you changed the values, did it stop the twitchy touchpad?
without rebooting

Looolzzz
actually yes
I changed the values from "8" to "80" and it does work
the twitchy touchpad isnt there anymore
but If I restart ubuntu the values are back to default :(

ok, I'm not to sure about your computer but I believe to make sure those values are set all the time, you will nee to add them to your xorg.conf file... Do you see that file in /etc/X11/xorg.conf?

no
it's not there

3:10 PM
hmmmmm
one sec

I believe ya ;) Just want to see if there is another way or if this is the only way

Hmm what is wrong with epiphany?

Afternoon all

Good day @Greg

3:20 PM
Does anyone here run MS Office in Ubuntu?

bye guys, gonna sleep,bye @aking1012 please forget it and forgive me (oh! it rhymes) gooog night all (UGT)
@Greg yes I do
MS office 2007 enterprise edition

@Prasad Me too. I can't seem to run Powerpoint presentations - the screen just goes black
Office 2010 Professional edition.

later @Prasad

@Greg sorry bro, haven't try it yet (and won't) bye please forgive me @aking1012, it's my hands typing, not my mouth :-) goooooood night

@Greg what're you trying to do with MS Office 2k7?
(better question: are you trying to do this in Linux or in Windows?)

3:25 PM
@ThomasWard Start a Powerpoint slide show

points at the better question he asked

in Linux, using Playonlinux front end of Wine

good luck with that
MS Office isnt designed to work in Linux
and (thus far) that functionality has never worked well on Wine

any news @ruffEdgz

@Greg you're aware OpenOffice/Libreoffice exists and can open powerpoint presentations right?

3:27 PM
@ThomasWard define 'open', because LibreOffice doesn't handle most MS proprietary files very well. Formatting is all over the place.

yay, quantal system boots to black screen :D

@ThomasWard everything else in MS Office 2010 works perfectly

@Greg 2010 != 2k7

@htorque you using kernel v3.4?

nope

3:28 PM
2k7 is OLD

3.2.0-24

I never mentioned 2k7 ...

alright.

@Dave well I know that you can set these options in the xorg.conf but I'm trying to see how to make a default xorg.conf for your system but when I ran the command to do that on my own computer, it didn't work :/

Fatal server error:
[ 4.209] could not open default font 'fixed'

3:30 PM
brb

man, how much i love booting into black screen

seems someone uninstalled a x11 package
"someone"

who would that someone be?

probably you already came to my home and messed with my system. STALKER! :P

Q: Where is the X.org config file? How do I configure X there?

IvanAs Ubuntu 10.10 seems to neither detect my graphics card (Intel 82852/855GM) automatically nor use the corresponding Intel driver even after manually installing it, I am looking into manually configuring X (shouldn't I?). Where can I find the configuration files I need to edit?

3:32 PM
@htorque damn you!
i can do those things remotely. why spend my time to just b0rk your system when you use U+1 after all? :P

Usually, you don't need the xorg.conf any more.

If you need to configure some devices anyway, you can do so by placing a file in the /usr/lib/X11/xorg.conf.d/ (Ubuntu 10.04) or /usr/share/X11/xorg.conf.d/

@htorque can you check what version of Octave is in QQ repo?

3.6.1-4

yay
$ rmadison -u ubuntu -s quantal octave
    octave |    3.6.1-4 | quantal/universe | source, amd64, i386

Q: xinerama, 2 cards, 3 monitors

JohnCCI've been trying to get this right and I'm so nearly there, but not quite. This machine has an Intel adapter with one monitor, and an ATI adapter with two. I'm happy to use xinerama to get this working. Here is my xorg.conf (Ubuntu 12.04):- Section "Monitor" Identifier "Dell1" Option "...

3:38 PM
oh, the problem i'm facing is already known. should start reading the u+1 forum again, i guess.

@htorque Can I update my answer with your info?

sure, why not?

thanks.

np

ok updated. thanks again.
Hmm why is QQ having Unity 5.10 when Precise already have 5.12?

3:46 PM
@jokerdino The Devs havent sent it upstream
Hello all

@Dave well that is good to know :D I haven't had to play with my xorg stuff since I moved away from Nvidia

how to create that file
in ubuntu 11.10 i had the possibility to create, remove files from system
but here ....
I know, another dump question :D

When reading into the /usr/share/X11/xorg.conf.d for the 50-synaptics.conf but it seems that it might be overwritten but that is the file you will need to touch to make sure those options are always there after a reboot

4:10 PM
@Dave did you drill down to the /usr/share/X11/xorg.conf.d directory and did you find anything related to synaptics.conf anywhere?

4:22 PM
nope
found, nothing
I replied on the page where I reported the bug
hope that dude will reply

4:47 PM
any Geany users?

Clicked the button!

When trying to 'Open Externally' i'm getting - Could not execute configured external command 'explorer' (Failed to execute child process "explorer" (No such file or directory)).
shouldn't it be looking for nautilus ?

have you tried just making a softlink from nautilus to explorer?
i mean, it's not perfect, but it gets you moving

Borked upgrade it seems :-(
