@quartata Sometimes the system notifies even without an @reply

I'd be astounded if there weren't mod tools for handling this better than expecting to be around for all the spam... But if not you should tell him more about MS
SU is high traffic but low spam so maybe their workflow is different
@DavidPostill might be able to chime in?

Rob
Not sure to what extent, though.
That said.. if mods really don't have the tools to investigate, I'm not sure it's a good call to force them to use a third party site to do their moderation.

Everyone take a nice deep breath and relax. It's a meta post. It's going to bring up points of view that disagree with many in this room. It's ok. We don't need to call in others to back up our point of view or shoot down theirs. The end goal here for everyone is to have a clean network. This is a discussion on how to get to that goal quickly, accurately and effectively.

Also Smokey tends to make SpamRam look bad

Sorry if I'm coming across as argumentative? I haven't commented on it yet...

6:18 AM
@gparyani oh no, let's disable everything immediately :)

@gparyani spamram is mostly just a blackhole list from what I know

I suspect a case in the future where a determined spammer acts just like a normal user and gets review privileges, then posts spam and proceeds to mark it as false positives

oh yeah that'd keep it up for 5 additional seconds

I have seen one case where a spammer whose blatant spam posts were deleted hopped onto meta to complain about the deletions

@gparyani Sounds like a losing battle... And a ton of work for a spammer just for him to get banned from MS and his feedback invalidated

tpu- by K.Dᴀᴠɪs

Rob
@ArtOfCode A question about the training you've put up. Here there's a note about 'delete me delete me ...' not being spam, and likely to be vandalism. That's fine. However, what's the stance on feedback for posts which are R/A flaggable? In particular, posts like these.

It's trivial to get around IP blocks by using VPNs

Rob
Don't even need a VPN.. most ISPs don't offer static IPs by default. At least in Australia, they don't

Should someone leave a message in the TL telling Journeyman about the spammers-by-site page or the new site dashboard?

I did it many times as the MSE anonymous editor to get past the several false-positive IP blocks. (Anonymous edits are filtered, and if the contents of an edit trip the filter, it insta-bans the IP for a week).

@K.Dᴀᴠɪs Here we have to pay for the privilege of having a static IP :(

@angussidney Maybe in a few hours. I'm trying not to jump on him right now. We kind of bombarded him with comments after his answer, which wasn't the goal.

@Rob Dynamic IPs are from the same range. With VPNs you can make it seem like your sock is from London when another is from Tokyo

Rob
@angussidney Probably should keep it to the meta post? Would keep it as a discussion rather than piling on JG. Also, to my point above, I don't think asking mods to rely on MS is a good alternative

@Andy yeah, which is why I decided to ask in here rather than leaving a message

I find the "get rid of spam quickly vs have the community involved in their cleanup" to be especially weird. not sure if we can compromise if that's his viewpoint...

@quartata There are ideological differences at play here. This is not a battle we can win. If people have different ideas on that front, we make our position known (which it is) and then leave it alone

like you'd rather have spam stick around for an hour to get in all three flags from SU users -- I'm over exaggerating but I mean
it's spam just eat it

6:31 AM
Offering as much tooling as we can will mitigate the differences as much as possible, but it's not something we're going to fully reconcile.

No, he's saying he doesn't want to rely on non-SE tools. Which I can understand. I know our data's pretty solid, but it's not SE.

Maybe someone who knows more about the vanilla mod tools?

Stop. We're not arguing about what people are saying like they don't have valid opinions. We're also not going to talk about people behind their backs.

6:34 AM
I'm saying that even though I disagree we should find some sort of a compromise if this isn't going to work for him

@quartata I haven't got time right now to read the overnight transcript as I'm off to work. If it's about auto nuking accounts then I vote no. We do get borderline "spam" posts deleted and sometimes I do click "not a spammer" and leave the account active. As for workflow I check the report twice a day.

@DavidPostill it is tangentially related
although that is interesting -- SU in particular probably gets more than its fair share of check out my blog stuff which would motivate that

If I could say one thing only, it's that posts aren't going to stop being 6-flagged nuked (and hence left to mods) just because we turn off/lower autoflagging. It's still gonna happen and they're still going to have to find the users through other means.

@GypsySpellweaver we do that already, but apparently it isn't good enough

tpu- by K.Dᴀᴠɪs

It's not an 'it isn't good enough' thing. I get it. It's that a third party tool is just a nuisance

Rob
6:41 AM
I think having it opt-in, as suggested, is a pretty good suggestion. At the very least, it'll make fewer people less happy

also not all mods should have to use metasmoke
SU is special in a few ways as David pointed out

Rob
Also, don't forget that there are over 500 mods on SE. Only a small handful really interact here.. so asking people to moderate SE by using a third party tool is a bit of a challenge

@Rob Problem with opt-in is that lots of smaller sites won't be able to build significant community support on meta as opposed to apathy - so turning it on on those sites would lead to questions about whether we have permission from the community to do it. It's easier to make it default-on with an easy offer to turn it off.
Turning it off is easier to justify in the face of a community "eh" than turning it on.

the smaller sites are really the problem.

Rob
@ArtOfCode Yeah, I can see that

6:43 AM
I can't add much at all, never even seen a mod's tool box.

Also... posting 170 or so meta posts and monitoring them all is an unreasonable task for a small team like us. That's why we're doing it network wide

on AU that shit gets obliterated one way or another, no one worries about that

@angussidney I mean we were planning to do it... but I'm glad we don't have to :P

It lends itself to reason that someone who is looking for guidance on what qualifies and doesn't as spam would read the "what's spam" section of the training.
