He has been doing this after most launches, updating as more data comes in. I think he has an app that scrapes the video for time and speed/altitude values.
 
So Roadster/ Starman will actually have a pretty close pass of Mars in 2020.

Making some progress now...
I've now created 4/7 pages that will eventually be shown on the site. I think the next is the "About" page, which will include contact information as well as some of the way the plots were generated. I might even include a link or two to Space.SE.
Close approaches should be pretty easy to do as well. I might do something more with it later, but...

One of the benefits of not knowing the language (or nearly so) is that it is both visually and aurally "quieter" wherever I go.
 
I agree with uhoh that the different horizontal/vertical scales is confusing. It'd be nice if the big distance numbers could be commatized (e.g. The car is 145,001,402 miles (233,357,209 km) from Mars) (assuming you want to avoid scientific notation).

Does your plotting library offer anti-aliasing?
 
@uhoh Yeah, I need to improve that. It is better now then it was, but I do agree. Will add that to my today list.

Okay, so I need some advice. I have been requested to add a distance travelled for Starman. I'm not sure what frame of reference I should use. Any thoughts?
I don't really think heliocentric is the way to go.
I guess I could just only add distance relative to Earth, either coming or going towards.

The numbers will be really high for now, even though it isn't moving that fast away from Earth.
