3:12 AM
Evening, everyone.

3:53 AM
sighs, for he has just lost every single subscriber to his website's RSS feed

how come @MarkSzymanski?

I have no idea.

how many did you have?

It could have something to do with my uploading a bunch of photos I took.
8

You mean your website might have lost them? or someone manually unsuscribed?

3:54 AM
I think everyone manually unsubscribed.
Because, there is still one subscriber.
Me.

heh lol

And, the photos aren't very good quality, seeing as how they were taken with my iPod Touch.
But, meh. Who cares. It's my website, and I'll do what I want with it. I'm not going to change it just because of what others think.

some of them were good though...oh well.

Yeah... Thanks ^^

how are you otherwise? lol

3:56 AM
I'm doing great, thanks. I got four upvotes on a quite simple answer of mine that I just posted, so that's making me happy :3

A: On Mac OS X how can I see how much memory is being used by what programs?

Mark SzymanskiYou can use the Activity Monitor application. It is located in /Applications/Utilities/Activity Monitor.app.

Forty rep in the bag.
dances :3

that's awesome. you kept it simple and answered the question so you deserve it. :) 10 of the rep is mine haha

Thanks! ^^
Well, I'm off to bed. Goodnight @studiohack, @everyone.

good night @MarkSzymanski

4:14 AM
morning folks

evening @Sathya :P

:) @KronoS

how was your sleep @Sathya?

very nice :P

 Homework Help

Help on homework for all you starving students out there...
oh and we made a new room
good @Sathya I'm looking forward to mine :)

4:20 AM
yep, saw that room earlier @KronoS
@KronoS yey!

listening to mumford & sons and realizes... they're amazing!

googles mumford & sons
Mumford & Sons is an English folk rock band. The band consists of Marcus Mumford (vocals, guitar, drums, mandolin), Ben Lovett (vocals, keyboards, accordion, drums), "Country" Winston Marshall (vocals, banjo, dobro), and Ted Dwane (vocals, string bass, drums). Although the band members have claims on certain instruments, they switch instruments during live shows according to convenience, for they each play a variety of instruments. The band formed in October 2007, rising out of what some in the media labelled the "West London folk scene" with other artists such as Laura Marling, Johnny Fly...

although it swears this one is one of my favs

English folk rock, interesting. Will listen later.
now I'm off to work

worthwhile IMO
later @Sathya

oh my
"disease vector"?
do other url shorteners like goo.gl and bit.ly work?

yes @nhinkle
bit.ly, goog.gl works

now that's just silly
tinyurl?

t.co is blocked as a "social network" :|

sounds like your work's filtering is pretty ridiculous

@nhinkle tell me about it

O_o
where do you work?

hm. what do you do there? it looks like they make all kinds of things
ooh, this is classy:
> Site best viewed with Internet Explorer 5.5+ or Netscape 6.0+ in 1024x768 resolution.

@nhinkle I develop, customize & implement this --> 3i-infotech.com/content/insurance/insurance_software.aspx
@nhinkle yeah, the roll-over menus don't work on Chrome :|

it looks like it worked for me
on that product page you linked to:
> Browser - Internet Explorer 6.0 / Firefox 2.0
Does that mean you have to target those old browsers when you're developing?
or is the info page just out of date

@nhinkle both
I don't deal with Web dev, mine's database development

6:05 AM
ah. bummer they restrict your internet so much :/

well I'm happy I have access to this and stackoverflow
for the blocked ones I have this
@nhinkle

back when i was in high school, they blocked all sorts of stuff
the teachers actually complained to the IT department about youtube being blocked because they couldn't show videos which were actually instructional and useful, so they ended up unblocking it
some of us discovered that even though www.facebook.com is blocked, www.www.facebook.com is not blocked, and happens to work just as well, as long as you're already logged in
as a matter of fact, justabout.anything.www.facebook.com works

ha!

worth a shot anyway. Not that I'm ever going to open fb at work. I'd rather use my phone

your blocking software is probably a bit smarter and is blocking *.facebook.com or even facebook's IPs directly

> You can ensure that no DML operations occur by adding the WITH READ ONLY option to your view definition
And I told you can do so using Roles & Privileges ( during my interview)

6:15 AM
i find the whole notion of web filtering software impractical. if workers/students want to goof off and waste time, they will. firewalls should already be keeping out viruses and the like, though it is appropriate to filter for known harmful sites. but the fact is, you won't be able to block everything you don't want people accessing, and you will end up blocking things which should be helpful.
i think it's more appropriate to say, "we're logging every page you visit. if you're not getting your work done, we'll look at your browsing history, and if you're on facebook all the time, you're fired." then people have an incentive to get their stuff done, but don't feel like they're being bullied when they use the web

@nhinkle that's very true. Unfortunately, the policies are generally dictated by Management who don't seem to grasp those concepts

of course in some situations you have to filter things strictly, like if you're in a scenario where you don't want data being accidentally leaked to the outside world, for example if you're working in defense, etc. but at an IT company? bah

FYI, anonymous / low rep user edit suggestions are now enabled ; if you see edit (1) on a question it is a suggested edit. Diamond mods can view queued pending edits via a topbar count notification which leads to a tab on /review

8:28 AM
thanks for the update @JeffAtwood

@nhinkle probably because as I said goodbye I switched off my server and cycled my IP address :)
and morning all

morning @DMA57361 saw your earlier post about and noticed Home IP, figured it might have been shutdown

yeah
one link was a leadertable for the primaries, the other was an attempt to get the number of edits a user had made (but the latter overuses the API, so I'm going to drop it I think)

ah
I had a look at the screenshots tho.. very impressive :) @DMA57361

@Sathya meh, not necessarily at the code level thou; I had to add an arbitrary 1 second delay to the JavaScript of the edit one to get the results to work correctly - and I don't understand why :/

8:39 AM
@DMA57361 :D hacks

indeed! :)

9:38 AM
hi @IvoFlipse

hi @Sathya

zero productivity today :/
been reading some documentation on same database basics :/

sounds like me waking up at 10:30
but I guess in your case it wasn't voluntary

yeah

flexible and agile support for IE6? ;P

9:43 AM
LOL
catching up on the transcripts eh @IvoFlipse

yeah

:)

morning @IvoFlipse

hi @DMA57361 :)

Q: What is the best media center software

KellsWhat's the best media center software for watching your movie/TV library in your living room? I'm looking for something that has the following: download movie/TV posters and details. keep track of what episode I'm on. Resume where I stopped watching last time. Easy navigation using a remote. ...

Q: Looking for video clip collection management software for Windows

The sort of features I'm looking for include: Scans video library and builds a database. Browse collection with preview clips. Allow me to dynamically filter or view based on metadata (e.g....

@MarkSzymanski I'm still subscribed, just don't post any crappy pictures ;P
not sure @Sathya
I guess every media player does it

hmm just left a comment to have a look at the other question

> @Nicholas, have you tried any programs from this other SU question? If not, try some of those and report back what did and didn't work – Ivo Flipse♦ 0 secs ago
So I noticed

Q: Why is Windows default IP address 169.xx.xx.xx?

A.DonahueI got this the other day and fixed the issue, but was wondering why Microsoft chose this address as default. Why not 1.xx.xx.xx or 255.xx.xx.xx? Did one guy at Microsoft say "Hey, pick a number 1 to 255....who just said 169?! Ok we're going with that for our Windows default IP address"

we have a new QotW ;P

heh, I've wondered that before, but never bothered to look it up :)

Indeed @IvoFlipse was about to ask you the same

9:59 AM
but we need to add something that explains a bit more I guess

Wil
10:18 AM
morning all!

morning

morning @Wil

good morning @Wil isn't that the guy who did that song with justin timberlake, that mother lover song

Wil
I think he is the I jizzed my pants / just had sex guy!

I love how they get all these famous people to join them
haha, did you check the other video's from that account?

Wil
10:25 AM
nope, my brother just put this on my Facebook, il take a look now
lol

omg the Natalie Portman Rap needs some censoring

Wil
... They made a macgruber film.... so many good things never reach the UK! :(
@IvoFlipse Do you have a link, I can't see it?

it's too NSFW I fear :P

Wil
lol
safe for home office?

not that I care about NSFW stuff, but Google likes to index every word that comes out of my keyboard here on chat

Wil
10:41 AM
@IvoFlipse OMFG

told you so

Wil
lol

11:02 AM
btw, (sort of) graphs: 85.210.194.203/primary.html (yes, I've too much time on my hands today)
oo, look at the shiny colours :P

ooo nice slide in :P
you're scraping @DMA57361 ?

@Sathya jQuery - soooo easy to slide :D
@Sathya scraping to get the ID's of the nomination posts, and then API to get the votes

I really need to learn it a bit
mind showing the code @DMA57361 ?

a fair chunk is nicked from se.awio.com/election.html
@Sathya sure, h/o

I knew third place was going to be very hard
I wouldn't object if this was the final outcome of the elections :)

11:09 AM
curiously thou, blood has more + votes than me - and you can't - vote in the finals; so is he technically ahead?

could be sympathy votes

well first votes get more weight in elections right

sort of

hmm then I need a strategic first vote

meh
I'll catch it at home
thanks tho @DMA57361

@Sathya how about the short version? db.tt/HJW1qEt

do'h

it expands to the same, so blocked

Wil
11:12 AM
Lol, you need to slap your admin!...

you can d/l the CSS, JS and HTML from the site directly

Wil
I wonder if Joe's - score will match Sathya's + score!

and it has a single PHP file called fetch.php that looks like so:
<?php
$contents = file_get_contents( $_GET['url'] );
echo( $contents );
?>
for grabbing pages cross-domain
but I can't promise great quality code; I'm quite new to JavaScript really

@DMA57361 baby steps here, just trying to see what it does :)

f/e

11:20 AM
can never get my head around DOM :|

ah, that doesn't help

:(

you much good with CSS?

nope

I think @nhinkle knows a thing or two about it

11:24 AM
web dev isn't really my cup of tea
and I suck at design & UI too :P

fair enough
ah well I suck and design an UI, but that's not the point ;)

I'll probably create the fugliest piece of UI with bigass buttons everywhere :D
btw miny typo in CS Theory spelling @DMA57361 :)

opps, fixed!

Is CS Theory broken or has only 1 person voted ?

I don't think their primaries are open yet

11:29 AM
ah
I think I might have hit API limit
all zeroes for SF

that's because they went straight to election

ah
my bad

did I ever show off my cheap knock-off of SE I built for my data handling module?

nope, push the link :D would love to have a look

I think the database for it is still up..
yeah, seems to be

11:38 AM
nice @DMA57361 PHP/MySQL ?

yeah
module's focus was on the PHP and database design
netted myself 91% in the module too :)

sweet

yeah, but to be fair, the lecturer wasn't the most knowledgeable in the subject...
as in, he hadn't heard of SQL injection...

> ERROR: Query failure: INSERT INTO 0715924_PostTags ( tagID , postID ) VALUES (32 , 25);
:D

do'h

11:42 AM
dupe tags seems to have caused that

ah
yeah, I don't think I check for that at all

(don't mind me, I'm just going nuts with posting random garbage)

that's fine
I've got a hidden reset page ;)

@DMA57361 heh :D

it destroys all the tables, rebuilds them and then adds example data
twas necessary because I kept moving between home (on my "server") and the Uni's server
.. did I not set a post length limit :/

11:44 AM
:P

lol
I set a minimum limit
and min/max for title
but no max for the boy
oh well :P

is there no max limit for body at all ?
wonder when it'll break :D

nothing is enforced in the PHP
so it's entirely up to the database :/
it's of text type...

hmm

yeah

11:47 AM
is quite a question :P

indeed
possibly I need to add flagging for low quality :P

heh :D
so I deleted that question anyway

aww, and I just started to down-vote you ;P

I got -ve rep :(((
:P

yeah

11:49 AM
there's another question + answer there ;)
> voting on own post

yeah
the error messages are a little unfriendly
but only 5% of the mark was for the UI :P

btw I gave a bogus email on registering
@DMA57361 that explains :P

@Sathya how bogus?

hyk@hyk.noway.jose
so technically it's still a valid email

that's OK then ;P
hehe
in my PHP:
/* TODO: check for valid email */

11:53 AM
@DMA57361 yey!

oic

btw, how did you fetch for nomination posts in the graph thingy ?

it grabs superuser.com/election?tab=primary via the fetch.php and trawls that for the post numbers
it then uses the post numbers to get the data via the API
again, a fair chunk of that bit was borrowed from se.awio.com/election.html

okk
you've had a look at this ? (I suspect not)

nope, let me have a nose
ah, nice
what sort of things do they ask?

12:03 PM
mostly Oracle PL/SQL related
once in a while there's standard SQL questions too

well, yes :)
do you happen to take part then?

@DMA57361 I tried to pay a daily visit
lost touch, I think I hadn't paid a visit in over a month
resulted in drop in my ranking
currently at 1028 :/

and what were you?

with 63.2% correct answers :(

erm... error

12:05 PM
try the link again @DMA57361

still can't get in; and I'm not sure chat parsed it correctly (the colons)

ah yes

that's worked
no wait
it goes back to the home page :/

should be fine now, my apologies

afraid not

12:09 PM
:(
have tried this in Chrome incognito -> u.sbhat.me/ehIxv2

ah
that short link worked
how odd

Oracle Apex's URL structure is funky weird and not at all user friendly

yeah, I'd noticed
not bad, mid-2010 you were pretty high up

yeah I didn't login in, though I'd get 2 reminders everyday :/
//baaad bad @Sathya

lol

12:15 PM
I was on a streak for one particular week, was in top 50
afair, question toughness bumped up suddenly and I was more or less doing random guesses, think that was one of the reasons why I stopped
I could've learnt more but didn't <s>get</s> didn't make enough time

yeah, know that feeling

I have an interview tomorrow at Oracle, and I'm just wondering how it's going to be

yes, you'd mentioned it after your interview earlier this week; IIRC this one is the more preferred position?

yep
I'm fairly upto to the mark when it comes to the basics, but I haven't had too much exposure to the more advanced stuff

depends on what they're after I suppose, what sort of position is it?

12:25 PM
Senior Dev / Team Lead

ah ok, well team lead positions don't just need the programming skills, people skills etc probably play quite a factor?

@DMA57361 yep, tbh I'm not too concerned about that but I need to clear the technical test first
I did fairly bad on some of the more advanced topics on my tuesdays' interview ( was blank when he asked about IOTables, Clustered Tables & Collections) but I told him I hadn't used them much so I don't know about them

phew I went running for the first time in like 2 months, that was needed badly :P

@Sathya ah ok, but presumably you know what to work on now? (FYI: I've no idea what any of those things are :P)

eh, getting too lazy @IvoFlipse :P

12:29 PM
@IvoFlipse how far?

@DMA57361 yep, been reading up on them.

pff only 20 mins, I use Adidas Micoach, so I'm just following orders so to say :)

@DMA57361 collections are equivalent of dictionaries/hash tables & arrays

but getting to use them... is like ugh

12:30 PM
@IvoFlipse lol, orders are often more effective than setting your own target

something strange happened in the beginning
but it might just be the hillside here

@Sathya ah, ok

that's an overview of the run, using a heart rate monitor and an accelerometer to count my step + estimated step lengths (so pacing)
then the colors are heart rate zones where they order you to stay in

1 min ago, by Ivo Flipse
something strange happened in the beginning
@IvoFlipse I meant :
guess you're referring to the spike ?

12:32 PM
yeah :P I must have hit a small hill
but going up to 80% of my max. beats per minute is quite insane :P

@IvoFlipse seem so

for just a stroll

avg of 146bpm, and 2.7 km/h nice

well the run was very short, but if I start running at what I 'could' run I'd have an injury next week
so I take it slow

Last night I dreamt that I asked a duplicate question. And then unicorns with guns appeared at my door.

12:42 PM
who says that was a dream?
your dead now, this is all just a dream ;P
wow that Isaac Asimov is quite educated o.O
