^ I worked closely for one of the traders that is currently a portfolio manager there but have lost touch with him for several years - so it's stunning to read that news about them
@CaptainBohemian in terms of industry, it would seem that finance is pretty dead right now ...

@D.Hutchinson would academia have better finance?

better finance? as in, funding? @CaptainBohemian

yea. I don't expect it would pay highly, but at least it has to be enough for basic expense.

eh ... I dunno @CaptainBohemian
I bet many are on welfare to help them get by ...

12:37 AM
I just want to basked in academia, disregarding how much it is paid as long as it is above basic expense.
@D.Hutchinson actually here the first year industry salary is not necessarily higher than research assistant salary for master graduates but it climbes steeply after working in industry for years but academia doesn't climb that much.

@Nat Wow!! Nice!! That question has an open bounty. Try answering it. :)

@CaptainBohemian I hear ya -- I unfortunately live in New York and don't earn a living wage from teaching :(
(I miss my students already ... )
@CaptainBohemian true but I've seen so many professors work until their mid 80s to early 90s ...
can someone in industry do that? almost never ...
industry doesn't provide you with a job that you can grow old with ...

@D.Hutchinson in Taipei you need an unusual high salary to afford a house.

exactly the same here, @CaptainBohemian

I suspect people in Taipei generally make a living by doing some business.

I plan to rent an apt for the rest of my life :)
yeah, students I know here in New York, from Taipei, are incredibly wealthy

1:55 AM
but I don't really like Taipei.
I just want to leave this ghostly place.

is it ... snobby and pretentious, @CaptainBohemian?
I get the sense that it is snobby / braggy ...
with lots of folks flaunting their relatively new wealth ...

well, when I was inundergraduate, one of classmates asked me if I am vey rich because he saw my address.

@CaptainBohemian one grad student here at my school is from Taipei on her dad's side, from Swiss / Germany dual citizenship on her mom's side. And she lives in her own penthouse apartment in midtown manhattan - with a terrace and a steinway piano. It was unreal to visit a friend at her penthouse.
well, are you? @CaptainBohemian :P

Well, I was just brought up here but that's not my choice.

I see ...

2:01 AM
And it was only my father who made money throughout my childhood until undergraduate.
I didn't make any money meanwhile.

I see
Are you a citizen of Taipei?

my father didn't give me a lot of money. All money I have now is what I afterwards got from academia.

I see

yes, but that's because I don't have my own house. People can only be registered as the citizens of a city if they have houses there.
even when I lived outside this city, I was registered as the citizen of Taipei.

I see

2:11 AM
I feel like living in a slum in Taipei because every facility in this house is broken. The living situation in my school dorm in the suburb was far better than here.

@CaptainBohemian :(
I love dorm life, too ...

truthfully speaking, I really prefer to live in a suburb or rural area than a big city like Taipei. But I have never been to other big cities, so I don't know if I would like other big cities, for no other cities in Taiwan is bigger than Taipei.

I see
you should try their boba shops :P
boba here in New York is so overhyped ... like mostly everything else here, too - except for maybe our steakhouses and pastrami sandwiches :)

2:27 AM
I don't know what is boba.

it's tea w/ milk w/ syrup and w/ tapioca bubbles
invented in Taiwan, I believe

And I am really not interested in food, so if that food is not cheap, I wouldn't bother to try.

it's pricey here ... probably is there too ...

I am more interested in scenery.

similar prices to, say, Starbucks

2:29 AM
I prefer to go to seaside than cafe.
I think taking a boat is more interesting than drinking any tea.

2:43 AM
@CaptainBohemian true

@D.Hutchinson if you can speak out the Chinese of boba since you said it's invented here, I probably know what it is.

3:17 AM
I can't @CaptainBohemian :(

Would this question be a reasonable fit for Academia: How to download the Latex file of an article from arXiv.org??
It was posted on Mathematics - it does not seem to be a great fit for that site. I did not flag for migration, but I have mentioned Academia in comments.
D'oh! Only now I have noticed that the question is more that 2 years old - so it cannot be migrated. (It was recently bumped by an edit, which is why I saw that question.)

@MartinSleziak It’s borderline. We don’t like questions on technical details of web services very much, but there are some non-closed ones for the Arχive, IIRC.
Note that it would probably be on-topic on Web Applications.
