@FMLCat The largest commercially-available consumer hard drives are 12 TB. He'd still need well over a thousand drives.

A: Continuous vs. Peak / Surge Power Output

allquixoticI don't think you have 20 Petabytes -- you probably have 20 Terabytes. Also, there's no way the number of disks you'd need for 20 PB would only consume 1 kW. The electronics to address all of that media alone would take more than 1 kW. So either this is a troll question or you're very mistaken a...

Windows is becoming UNIX-like o_O never thought it'd happen

Bob
12:43 AM
@allquixotic lol, that's the same chip I have in my desktop
'cept I couldn't detect any latency even with my matrix2 (granted, it was on that test video)
so I'm not 100% sure if it's LL support or just really low latency on another codec (apparently even SBC can do very low latencies depending on the implementation)
@allquixotic :D
@allquixotic does it actually do c1 with your W1?

1:03 AM
Come to think of it... The Corsair 760T seems way oversized even with an EATX board in it. There's so much empty area in the front.

1:24 AM
@Bob didn't test the range yet
wtf

Bob
2:04 AM
@allquixotic yea the Intel cards used to require Dell drivers for aptX
being included in Windows is new afaict

2:19 AM
I unplug my Xbox One Controller from USB and the entire USB 2.0 root hub resets. WTF.
Could be due to long cabling - it was plugged into the USB passthrough port on the Corsair K95 RGB Platinum.

2 hours later…
3:57 AM
hi

This thing has a mezzanine board for the VRM.

nice

It's mini-ITX, so tricks like that are kinda necessary for Intel HEDT.

argh so many abbriviations I try to renember
maybe learning everything is impossible

HEDT = High-End Desktop, Intel's internal designation for their high-core-count enthusiast platform.
(AMD has adopted the term as well for their Ryzen Threadripper platform)

4:03 AM
I know around 700 just cause theyre common or cause it looks cool to use them all over the place.
how do I easily determine if a technology is redundant ot not
eg: xma, etc are basically obsolete concepts
Im not sure how good I am at IT/CS to be honest
dont have a degree in it
I just wanna be at least average

4:53 AM
Hmm...
So, the VRM isn't on the mezzanine board, but a USB 3.0 header and SATA ports are on one of them, and that board provides a small amount of heatsinking for the VRM.
The other is for M.2.
There are two more M.2 slots on the back of the motherboard.

5:30 AM
woop got my C program working
I wonder if any smartphones can have sata
aa in mini sata port
its faster than even usb 3.0
if its the latest version of sata

user226528
SATA consumes more power than the entire mobile device itself.

ah

user226528
5:49 AM
Speaking of C, for 30 years Microsoft has tormented itself writing Windows in pure C (no C++), so that it can be portable. Bonus: Now they can abandon Intel's sinking ship anytime they want.

I thought they used both
I have the win 2000, nt4 and dos 7.0 sauce code :)

user226528
Minuscule uses of C++ and Assembly in exceptional places.

true

user226528
They use C# more.

user226528
You know, for "Windows Store apps".

5:54 AM
is C still more portable than c++ and does it still allow for better performance

user226528
No.

user226528
But Microsoft eats its own dog food.

the concept of objects confused me when I learned javascript
im not sure if I should do C or C++

user226528
The concept of objects confused me when I learned Borland Pascal.

it was object prototyping more specifically

user226528
5:57 AM
I don't know what the phrase means

it was cause the tutorial said: this.property == this.property which is confusing. this.property == myobject.property is how it really should have been

user226528
I see.

user226528
You know, I think I can easily relate to people who chose Betamax over VHS, HD-DVD over Blu-Ray, or Zune over iPod.

user226528
I chose Pascal over C.

user226528
God, I hate C.

user226528
6:04 AM
But I kinda like C#.

how come?

user226528
How come what? That I chose Pascal, or that I like C#?

that you hate C

user226528
I have two words for you: Undefined behavior.

oh.. yeah thats a thing..

6:07 AM
So... job-related ideas.

work for me

The cloud is a cornerstone of modern computing, and I was wondering if spending some time (and money) learning AWS or other major cloud platforms on my own would help get me a job.
The problem is, any kind of independent learning isn't particularly valuable because it isn't professional experience.

I assumed you were an SEO or something based on your rep

No, I don't do search-engine optimization.

user226528
@bwDraco Hi. There is something that confused me to no end. Why is you phrase "I'm not an RO or mod" pinned?

6:09 AM
@Bob, any ideas?
@FleetCommand It was a bit of a joke a couple of days ago.

senior executive officer

lol
@CoderCat So...

im also unemployed and loving it

Is learning stuff like this on my own going to help me get a job, even if it's not professional experience?

user226528
Must have been a mean joke, although I am not alien to such things here. I still remember the "glorious communism" thing.

6:11 AM
I would say yes partially
it will help you do your job
some people are qualified in whatever topic but dont have a clue about it in the real world

Ave
@CoderCat same

It would be little more than a line item in my resume, but is it worth the time and effort (and money)?

Ave
but I love it sarcastically
I want money

user226528
Who doesn't?

I can set aside some funds for stuff like this, but AWS can get very expensive very quickly if you don't know what you're doing.

6:14 AM
I dont think a university has a course purley on aws

As in, expensive enough to exhaust all of my reserves in a matter of days (and possibly force me to borrow money from my parents).

user226528
A wikiversity might.

so id learn it at home

I know for a fact that AWS isn't expensive when used properly. But mistakes can easily cost hundreds or thousands.

wow

6:15 AM
IIRC AWS does have cost controls to help make sure this doesn't happen.

you shouldnt need to spend that much to learn aws

It probably won't cost much more than $50-100 a month, FWIW.

to do it, well let the company youd work for worry more about the money

Ave
@FleetCommand some people.

Bob
@bwDraco ?

6:17 AM
learning and doing it professionally are different things

Ave
a friend refused to sell her btc before the crash (I warned her last week)
bc "she had everything she wanted"
yeah btc is a bad idea

@Bob Whether spending potentially large amounts of money learning to use job-relevant technologies is a good idea.

if I learn how to drive it doesnt mean I can only drive one make of car

(cloud stuff tends to be limited to more advanced jobs, and most cloud-related jobs require a significant amount of experience; entry-level jobs are rare for this specialization)

learn the underlying technologies of aws not aws itself

6:21 AM
Hmm...
Seems there are quite a few junior-level sysadmin jobs that call for AWS experience.
Even if not used professionally, learning AWS or other cloud technologies while working a basic IT job like desktop support can help.

so cloud related technology. i.e how does cloud computing work (in detail)

Well, it's not merely concepts. Professional experience is about being able to use the technology in the real world.
That means understanding cloud services, instance types, APIs, management, etc.

learn that then aws should be somewhat familiar
aws is just a product/service name that uses cloud computing and storage

I have been using virtual private servers (a type of IaaS cloud service where resources are bundled) for the last few years, but the decoupled nature of full-fledged cloud platforms are something I'm not equipped to handle.

just break it down into the core topics and learn them at home

6:25 AM
As in, separate compute, storage, networking, and other resources.

yes
aws is cloud computing. just with amazons own jargon

(I have three servers on Linode, paid for with personal funds)

Bob
@bwDraco uhhhhhhhhhhhhhh

bbl

Bob
well, that's TAFE in a nutshell

6:29 AM
@Bob We don't call it TAFE in the US. We call it "continuing education".

Bob
@bwDraco ?
AIUI TAFE translates to community college in american

Worth a shot?
I feel like I'm grasping at straws. There are so many specializations in the IT world, and I just feel like I need to pick something in demand in the job market and learn it independently.
Speaking of cloud... doing routine server maintenance right now.

user226528
6:47 AM
Is it possible to write a code block in code format in this chatroom?

@bwDraco yep - I just went through a successful interview so I can probably tell you a bit
@FleetCommand highlight it and Ctrl+K
class Foo {
public static void main(String[] args) {
System.out.println("Hello");
}
}
it won't auto-indent for you, so that's on you
@bwDraco when you're interviewing for a technical position, you really have to know your "audience" -- the technical recruiters and hiring managers or developers who are looking at your application

user226528
Hmm... No syntax highlighting though... Removing code.

Are you okay?

they generally have a set of things they're looking for, and as long as you check most of the boxes, you'll get past the recruiter... then it comes down to impressing the interviewer

Hmm...
I think things might fail at later interview stages. I expect to be in talks with career placement services to get an internship which might provide the minimal amount of experience required for a full-time position.

6:52 AM
it also helps to acquire buzzword knowledge that's less common; you're far more likely to get a look if their position is looking for something rarer and you have it, instead of every candidate and their uncle knowing the stuff you know
so you kinda have to know what's common and what's hard to find in the current market... which means you have to know the market
it helps to carefully read many, many job applications in your field
see what they say are required vs. nice to have, and work on those nice to haves; those are the rare skills they really want
the required stuff is what everyone typically knows
you can also email technical recruiters (even if you don't qualify) and ask them what skills they find to be hardest to get in the job market for your desired position
a lot of them will reply to you, and you can acquire some intel about what is needed in the market by talking to a few recruiters
then spend a month learning that, and you'll be hireable
not gonna lie, SE Jobs is awesome; I used SE Jobs to find a great job... it really works

I'll definitely look into this. Will prolly bring this up the next time I see my career counselor.
Hopefully, I'll at least be able to cover some key baseline skills within the next couple of months, and work on more specialized skills.

your credentials are ridiculous; you have a M.S. in CS, right?

Night.

not getting a job either in sysadmin or development with a MS in CS is a crying shame TBH... I think if you change your approach a bit you'll get one quite easily, and a well-paying one at that... a lot of people would do anything to get such a prestigious credential... don't waste it m'friend

Yeah.
Thanks.

Does one lose on good games if he or she is intent on not having a Steam account?

user226528
I've always bought everything I wanted without using my Steam account, but I was wondering...

8:56 AM
@bwDraco AWS is handy. Codes eating the world, and most companies run stuff in the cloud

9:10 AM
happy christmas eve to those who'm it's arrived for
I've found a lot of people who aren't getting jobs, is simply because they aren't applying
at least among the people i know
don't fool yourself by saying 'ah i don't know X, therefore I can't do this job'
No one is expected to know everything walking into a job
as long as you can learn along the way, you'll be fine
There's no such thing as a job for life any more, so if you find you don't fit somewhere, move on

How does one forces a page to refresh bypassing the cache in Microsoft Edge?

user226528
And is it natural that opening a website in Edge takes five to ten minutes?

Q: How to perform a Hard Refresh in Edge?

JimmeryI am viewing a site on localhost in Edge. All I want to do is fully refresh the page and all of its resources (external CSS, external JavaScript, images, fonts, everything that the page links to - I want to reload it all again from the server). How can I do this? This seems like a simple req...

wow wtf ms

@djsmiley2k Apparently not.

Q: How to force Internet Explorer (IE) to REALLY reload the page?

EMPWhen using Internet Explorer 8 to test my web application I often find it doesn't reload the page, so I don't see my changes. This has resulted in a lot of wasted time and frustration wondering why my fix "didn't work" - when in fact the browser never loaded the fixed version. I've tried the Ref...

well that feels rather dumb
also with my new hat i've gone for a black eye ;D

9:59 AM
@djsmiley2k Hehe. No black eye for me, I'm wearing safety goggle over my glasses :)

wow how many hats now? XD

Still 4.

@DavidPostill Christmas is coming, not Halloween. You are not supposed to scare anyone on Christmas.

Oh I dunno
random man appears in your house at night? That can be pretty terrifying
and then theres Krampus...

user226528
Somehow, Windows 10 v1709 seems unwilling to download Windows Spotlight material. Most of the times, I end up having the default image on the lock screen.

user226528
On all my machines...

user226528
But the one that I haven't "upgraded" to 1709 is still okay. That's 1703.

I'm wondering how long before those lock screens feature some kind of product placement

mfw libc++abi relies on libc++ having same version, and libc++ relies on libc++abi having same version.
So you can't upgrade them separately
which is Very Good™ because my package manager doesn't support updating two packages at once, it seems

@Ave lol wut

I wonder about heat tho @Bob

@djsmiley2k It has fans :P

@Ave the solution is build the binary of the first package, don't install it however. then build the binaries of the 2nd, 3rd, Nth package too, linked against the first, then install them all at once.
but this is what happens when people think they are cleverer than everyone else.

Q: Why does my bitcoin "to US dollar" worth change when the stock market is closed?

Brooks FinchMy bitcoin wallet "US dollar" amount is changing. It's Saturday the market is closed. How is this happening?

dear lord.
I wonder, if the processing of transactions is hugely dependent on that small percentage of miners...
because spikes like this, cause a huge slow down....
imagine the kind of spike if a huge miner decided to get out?

user226528
@DavidPostill Well, it is definitely the second funniest crime news of all time I have heard.

@FleetCommand What was the first funniest? :)

user226528
Terrorist meet early retribution, in the form of spam SMS.

user226528
(In American, they just call it text.)

user226528
They were preparing three IEDs in their hideout to detonate at unspecified locations. One of their explosive-connected phones receives a spam text.

user226528
2:52 PM
@DavidPostill Sorry, I wrote the answer to your question but forgot to ping you. Here.

@FleetCommand Ah. That's not so much funny as unfortunate. I don't find reports of people dying funny (terrorists or not).

@FleetCommand sounds like an urban legend to me

@djsmiley2k /. covered it, back in the day

huh, hgmmm ok
haha the comments said exactlyt the same thing

> according to Russian security sources

3:04 PM
indeed
Rather than 'We accidently two people'

There is no actual confirmation from any reliable sources apart from second hand reports.

rather than 'we inflitraded said group, our man is the handler, he blew her up'

@DavidPostill Can't really ask the person who got the text

i mean
maybe the text arrived, she jumped, and self detornated the thing

Security services aren't well-known for being open and encouraging of independent vetting in the area of terrorism prevention AFAIK
(Russian or otheriwse)

3:06 PM
the bit that doesn't make sense to me
'Clever enough to wire up a phone to detonate explosives'
'not clever enough to filter the messages it'd activate on'

@djsmiley2k Also covered in the comments- the devices are pretty crude
Basically detonator wired to speaker/vibration motor
Not exactly a case of unique 2FA code matching with additional thumbprint verification ;-)
Could always ask on the security SE

@bertieb In this case no. But presumably the security forces are able to check any text message received.

"I'm wiring up a... device to a phone, how can I secure it from unwanted activation?"
@DavidPostill Then you're back to trusting the security services, which may or may not fit your definition of "reliable source"

@bertieb They don't :)

I'm wondering how you'd know the numbewr
In the UK you wouldn't

3:11 PM
@DavidPostill Quite hard to verify then!

maybe sims are more controlled in .ru

> Security sources believe a spam message from her mobile phone operator wishing her a happy new year received just hours before the planned attack triggered her suicide belt, killing her but nobody else.
So... pretty much speculation

yeah
'it blew up, there was a message around that time'

@djsmiley2k Wouldn't what? If they already had the terrorists under surveillance they probably knew all the mobile numbers ...

@DavidPostill hmmm how
in the UK sims are sold freely
you know this I'm sure, there's no quick and easy way to find out a sim's associated # easily

3:14 PM
How do you know the russian ss didn't send the text?

unless you know the IMEI of the phone first
I suggested that already :P
I also suggested they just got rid of someone, and blamed it on that

3:30 PM
@djsmiley2k Depends on the network

Bob

@djsmiley2k Yes
SIM cards have a standardized field called "My number" and some operators store the SIM's number in that field funny enough
Some operators have a USSD code for identifying your number too

8:32 PM
Hello folks!
Merry Christmas everyone!! 🎉🎊

Merry Christmas!

I haven't been online recently because I had to be rushed to the hospital in the middle of the night on Thursday. Emergency surgery was carried out on Saturday morning. Apparently my appendicitis got triggered. I'm okay now though :)

@FMLCat how would they know that phone, having that number, was in that building.... after it all blew up?

However... Court mandated meeting with dad today. In the hospital. As if Christmas in the hospital wasn't bad enough by itself...
Anyway. I need to get rest. Goodnight! Just mainly dropped in to wish you folks.

have a good one @rahuldottech

Quick Question
In the Group Policy Editor for Windwos
Why would Chrome or Teamviewer be blocked but not Edge when I havn't outright blacklist them?
Been driving me crazy because I can't find the setting

Yeah but I haven't out right block them

There are also Application Control Policies (AppLocker), which are apparently separate things
How specifically are Chrome and TeamViewer blocked? Do you get a specific error when running them?

Yeah
IT's says'
"this app has been blocked by your administrator"

8:49 PM
Is this computer part of a domain?

No
Oh I just find it
IT's because I had it on

I hate all this new fangled windows technology names

Basic User" instead of "Unrestricted

rsop, ad, gpo, acl are what people understand

SRP has been around since Windows XP/2003 ;)

8:52 PM
oh?

What confusing about the group policy editor is there are things that are null and void for the current verson and in my case something that dosent' seem it should have in effect does

@FMLCat my point being if we can retroactively locate phones, we can find people from earthquakes etc.

srp was really just a gpo

@MathCubes Yeah, when things get confusing it can be best to consult the Registry to see what's actually being applied

Yeah

8:54 PM
but even then, services or programs can still revert registry settings

Yeah I hate it but Linux don't turly have an alternative.

even if reg permissions are all set to 'deny' for all users, groups, and security principles, the reg settings can still be changed by whoever the owner of the object is
side note: I wonder if its possible to do some hackery to set the owner to nobody

True
I am turying to create the closest enviroment possbile

to what

Because I am trying to creating a computer that people can connect to via Team Viewer and let them use VirtualBox to have a bait VM for scam baitign

9:00 PM
ohh
id be careful with that unless you know what youre doing

Nice idea in theory
I know what I am doing
Rather than I should probably have a vpn but can't afford one

a vm can still have access to the host os if the network is set up a certain way
or com port

not sure why you think you need a VPN?

Yeah, I know that, Thanks for telling me anyways

@djsmiley2k Because I'm a cat!

9:02 PM
I know that form scambaiting. YOu don't really want the scammers to access your files when they bomb it with a malware like wanacry and yes that has happen
to me

so id just buy a second hand laptop and put it on its own subnet via the router. dont put any other devices on that same subnet tho

That's a great idea
And you know what I have a spare

cool

An old router. One of those popular Linksys that doesn't even allow for my full internet speed
It's like 56 mb/S

wooh

9:06 PM
My internet speed is like 130 MB/S down when it should only be 100 Mb/S down
I get well more than what I paid for

I think ive had this before: stackoverflow.com/questions/17599765/…

Yeah the easiest way is though a linux live cd

@bob Following from our discussion on making ER-X as the main router and Google-WiFi as the AP.

Bob
9:51 PM
@hypersonics There's a couple different ways to approach this, but I'll be out most of the day so I'll get back to this tonight/tomorrow
@hypersonics But for starters, if you want to keep your current routing config but want to properly isolate the networks, on the ER-X go to the Firewall/NAT tab, Firewall Policies sub-tab, and add a new Ruleset. It should default to Accept, and apply to the LAN interface (probably switch0 if you used the wizard), Direction in. Add a Rule to that Ruleset with the Action of Drop, and a Destination Address of 192.168.X.0/24 (where X is your Google subnet).
You might also need to add a Rule to allow access to the specific address of your Google router so WAN access still works.
Back in ~12 hours

@MathCubes I typically get 110-120 Mbps on 100/10 Charter Spectrum (formerly Time Warner Cable).

Bob
@hypersonics I'd also like to clarify your goals: why do you want this extra subnet? 'cause optimal network config really depends on what you want to do with it.
e.g. if you do want computers on either network to be able to talk to each other, you'd have to go and change the ER-X's wizard-added firewall rule to allow WAN to LAN traffic, and add a static route on the Google router so the ER-X subnet is routed towards the ER-X.
Or change the network so the ER-X is the main router.

10:20 PM
@Bob Thanks Bob. My initial goal was to have a separate subnet for the three laptops, which is what I have got now. However, my intention is to communicate (mainly via SSH) from a Linux client that is connected to Google Wi-Fi on the Linux laptop 1 that is connected to ER-X. So, basically across IPs existing in different subnets.

10:50 PM
@hypersonics Ah. Yea you'd either need to do static routes on Google, or port forwarding on ER-X. Or make ER-X primary.
The LAN2 wizard has an option for two subnets that allow communication across them.
But I don't really feel like typing the rest on phone so that'll have to wait :P

11:33 PM

think i have got a cold or a virus

@Burgi No presents under your tree?

umm...
