@Mast From my random guesses, and Google Translate, is the code broken?

@Mast ouch... google translated?
@Peilonrayz: Yeah "Ihr Code funktioniert nicht wie beabsichtigt" = "Your code doesn't work as intended"

9:35 AM
@hoffmale Nice, I don't speak German, and don't want to close something I know nothing about, :)

Oh, right, I should've said it's broken in chat as well.

@Mast: That translation is weird, yet fun at the same time ;) Translated back to English (keeping the weirdness intact): "Welcome on Code Review. Sadly, your question isn't nameable for Code Review. Your code isn't working as intented. Please take you a look on the help"

@Peilonrayz Part from memory and part from translate. My German is too rusty to do it on my own...
@hoffmale Nameable? I thought I wrote eligible...
Also, my Dutch is showing in the translation.

"ernennbar" = able to be named
(think of naming a knight)
I'm having my fun with those phrases right now xD

"Please take a look at the help" is roughly translated to Dutch as "Kijk alstjeblieft naar de help" or "Werp alstjeblieft een blik op de help".

9:39 AM
^^
A better German translation would be "Willkommen bei Code Review. Leider ist Ihre Frage nicht für Code Review geeignet. Ihr Code funktioniert nicht wie beabsichtigt. Bitte werfen Sie einen Blick in das Hilfecenter."
@Mast: Though, your version is funnier if one tries to put it in context so the phrases used would fit ;) "Welcome on (board of the) Code Review. Sadly your question cannot be named by Code Review (as a candidate for something?). Your code isn't working as intended. Please throw a look on the assistant."

The code review comment is really not helpful. If someone can't explain why something is wrong, they probably are just recycling received 'wisdom' without understanding it. You "shouldn't" capitalise the first word of a variable in Javascript, and you "shouldn't" instantiate an object inside a for loop - if you don't know why, you won't know when the rule doesn't apply. — Toby 20 secs ago

The code there is just a first attempt, but I feel that the algorithm is wrong. Basically I compare each time with the previous one and I accumulate them. Then, as soon as the time is different prom the previous one, I write the old line, where I have accumulated all the previous values. However, I don't know how to manage both the "multiples of ten" thing and the "accumulation" thing. My question was not supposed a code review, but an algorithm review, if this makes sense for you :) — GaetanoDM 18 secs ago

Regarding point #2, ...you seem to misunderstand the concept of scoping. Declare your object variable at module level in a standard module, and it will "live" for as long as ThisWorkbook is open. Point #1 could have been illustrated with a 2-liner Minimal, Complete, and Verifiable example and the answer is on this site: Dim statements aren't executable, if you need a dynamically allocated array use the ReDim keyword, which is executable. #3 is too broad for this site, and since the code doesn't do what you need it to do it's also off-topic on Code Review, which would otherwise be the place for "a better way". — Mat's Mug 9 secs ago

6:07 PM
An upvote is worth 10 rep, a downvote is - 2. Sometimes a downvote will make the answer goes under a "threshold of worth" and there will be a counter-effect of someone upvoting your answer to counter the downvote. So you'll have gain 8 rep or more depending on the situation. So seriously, unless your answer is really bad, don't delete an answer.

@Marc-Andre okay - it just bugs me when there is no explanation...

I can understand that, but re-check your answer for mistakes, and if you find nothing then just forget it and look for a new question to answer :)

Does this code actually work on CSV files? How does it make sense to split each line using '\n' as field delimiters? — 200_success ♦ 1 min ago

@200_success I will test it out give 5 minutes

@200_success I suspect his idea of CSV file is borked, but without example input, who knows?

His code does seems to work from what I tested. Does it make sense no, not at all but it's not broken (I think)

The code is not broken, his specification might be.

6:40 PM
Yeah the split does nothing
I think he want to compare lines of data between the two files, so I'm not sure why he thinks the split is necessary when each_line is already providing that.
> # split the file up by line and push
# the contents of the line to an array

This question appears to be off-topic because it is a code review request. This might be better suited to the Code Review Stack Exchange site. Before posting there be sure to read their FAQ to ensure that your question meets their guidelines. — John Conde 28 secs ago

@200_success The code is weird and maybe something is not necessary but it does seems to work base on the documentation provided in the code. I think he would need some explanation but as far as I can read, everything is working.

I guess that it might work in some degenerate case. The .split('\n') just turns each line into a one-element array. But then you would be looking for lines in common, rather than fields in common.
Still, I think that putting it on hold with a comment is more useful as feedback than getting a speculative answer.

@200_success @Marc-Andre OP added CSV sample in question.

I know and it seems to fit what I thought originally. The code works but not for the reason OP thinks it works.
But as I said, I'll leave that question up to 200_success, I don't really think it should have been closed, but it's not a great question either.

Q: Hiding and showing spreadsheet rows based on cell value

KimI'm currently using the following code that is triggered as each cell in a column is updated. It works fine, but takes a couple seconds for every cell, which is really cumbersome with ~200 cells to complete the sheet. Is there any way to speed up this code? Private Sub Worksheet_Change(ByVal ...

To other watchers: Is anyone else somewhat dissatisfied with that answer? The n remark is completely correct, but the answer's code is basically semi-golfed and the answer is mostly an alternative implementation ("here's how you can write it with Control.Monad.Loops"). (I'd comment on that answer, but for some reason JavaScript does not work at the moment on CR.SE for me)
