@AnkitSharma ... that's Mr Pink from Reservoir Dogs

@iandotkelly not see the film

@AJ ... a long time. I guess I've been a developer for 27 years.

I know only two things about Ian , first he is older then me and second he seems way cool-headed then me 😂

I thought he looks like Steve Buscemi.

A J
3:39 PM
@iandotkelly that's longer than my age.
@iandotkelly Did you work on first version of Windows?

And you ended up in Scala? How did you begin then?

@NapoleonWilson that IS Steve buscemi

@AJ I started out on unix .... so missed Windows 1 through 3. I did do some work on Windows 3.1.

Ian === Steve Buscemi

@NapoleonWilson I mostly did desktop apps on Windows in VC++. VB & C# until 2011 when I switched to iOS and web apps in node.js.

3:43 PM
Ah.

I decided I needed a change, and high performance cloud stuff in Scala seemed like something different.
Scala is an interesting language ... not sure I really love it yet.

Oddly, I now have to crawl through the mess that is MFC in my new job.

Ouch MFC is really not that much fun.

@DForck42 yes

But that's fortunately only a part of it. The majority is mesh algorithms and GPU stuff.

A J
3:45 PM
@NapoleonWilson MFC?

Microsoft Foundation Classes
C++ wrapper around Win32 and COM

@AJ It's an old C++ (or "C with classes") library for Windows development. The defacto standard (a long time ago at least) for Windows programming if you didn't want to mess with the raw C API.

Stuff I dabbled in in the late 90's

@Riker neat. how many years you got left?

A J
@iandotkelly I recently learned Node JS. Did you work on core part or used any framework such as Express?

3:47 PM
@NapoleonWilson eww

@AJ ... some stuff that didn't use a web framework, but also using express and koa.

A J
@iandotkelly Ohh. I never worked on C++ professionally. So I guess I never heard of it.

I gladly left that behind for Qt a long time ago. But well, it's not too difficult to get back into it if you know a little about how Win32 works. It's just...so much less beautiful. ;-)

node.js is incredibly powerful for getting a web app or REST API up and running quickly.
and for many situations its very fast. its good for event driven stuff, not so good for computation.

A J
@iandotkelly Yep. I used it for socket implementation.
@iandotkelly agreed.

3:50 PM
Web development is something I have about zero grasp of.

A J
@NapoleonWilson I wanted to get into Desktop application development, but ended up in web.

@NapoleonWilson me too around 10 years ago - which was why I pushed myself through a Rails tutorial and blagged my way into a 'full stack' job.

@NapoleonWilson back end web's not super difficult. front end is where it's a PITA cause every browser's different

@AJ Well, web is the new desktop anyway, unfortunately. ;-)

learn react.js

3:52 PM
@DForck42 See, I already struggle with what "back-end", "front-end" and "full stack" is. ;-)

A J
@NapoleonWilson lol true. :P

@NapoleonWilson "back-end" is what runs on the servers. "front-end" is what's run on the client directly

I was about the only CS student who didn't care a bit about networks and websites. ;-)

typically, back-end is your core language, such as c#, python, php, etc. front-end is what makes your page pretty, such as html, css, javascript, etc.

And full stack is both then, I guess?

3:54 PM
its a good time to learn web technologies - the browsers are getting more standards compliant, the api's available are getting richer, v8 has made javascript in the browser super fast, so now all the browsers run js super fast.
so you can write front end code less like markup + a little bit of dynamic stuff, to somehting that's about as rich as desktop client code used to be.

@NapoleonWilson basically
@iandotkelly I've been refreshing my javascript training the last month or so. javascript has evolved SO much since I last used it seriously... 8 years ago
for example, when I last really made something in javascript, there wasn't such a thing as 2d arrays, at least not without hacking it together

@DForck42 yeah - javascript is now a serious language, with a massive community

@iandotkelly although I'm unsure why they still call it javascript

@DForck42 because ECMAScript is unweildy?
Though people do say ES6
Or ES2017
To refer to specific standards.

4:11 PM
shrugs
probably cause developers are lazy, lol

@iandotkelly Ooof... I've heard... interesting things about that. One of my family member's workplace had a problem... apparently the guy who created a bunch of their back end and no one can fix it because it's in scala.

@NapoleonWilson @AnkitSharma I wish the SEDE had our voting data on it. I'd love to see how many ID questions I've helped close

@DForck42 It should have information about who voted. But most of them are probably deleted now anyway, and the tracking of deleted questions is still limited, I think.

4:36 PM
@NapoleonWilson yeah, posthistory doesn't track deleted posts, unfortunatley

There's the deleted table they introduced not too long ago, but I don't know how much that even tracks and last I checked it wasn't too exhaustive.

4:56 PM
Why no new Black Mirror in Netflix Indian yet ;'(

5:13 PM
@Catija .. yeah, its very powerful and succinct, but quite hard to read and not the biggest community to draw upon and find developers familiar with it. My place recruited 2 people recently - me and someone else, with zero scala experience. Good for me I guess.

A J
I watched John Wick. Nice movie, but too much blood spilled for a car and a dog.

@Catija ... no, I had to learn it over a weekend to complete a coding challenge for the job. That said, they know that I'm new to the language and have given me time to learn on the job.
