Where do you find the number of users on gamedev.SE ?

Total? Ever?

user4704
Count how many appear on your version of gamedev.stackexchange.com/users

user4704
multiply by (last page - 1) from the nav bar below

user4704
and then count how many appear on the last page and add that

user4704
Or run an SEDE query to do the same.

Another view on the data is to look at stackexchange.com/leagues/13/week/gamedev and sum up the results there; these exclude non-active users.

Is there a way to determine how much my impact has changed over a given time period?

1 hour later…
4:25 AM
@JoshPetrie So about 77,500 with the first method and 85,000 with the second method. Good enough for me... but that's one heck of a margin of error :D

Does anyone know of a city-building game that doesn't snap to a grid/tiles?
I get the idea that Cities:Skylines might be one but alas I do not own it and I don't think it will run on my computer anyway.

8:26 AM
yea Cities Skylines is not grid-based
dunno of any others

How does it manage the lack of grids? I still see many people creating very even cities.

Splines and curves for calculations
Might have a snapping tool too, can't remember

So I guess I did get a few votes for best game of the District Arcade. Hmmm...

@DukeZhou I don't see your game on the list, interestingly enough. Wonder why...

"The troubles facing Toys 'R' Us aren't just about competition from Amazon (AMZN, Tech30) and Walmart (WMT). A lackluster summer at the box office might be hurting the entire toy industry, which depends on hit movies to drive sales of licensed toys."

Interesting

3:05 PM
Watching a video on Unity Profiling.
I think I now realize why my pathfinding is so slow...

The short is, my pathfinding has a very large object for each node.
I need to have that be much lighter weight.
I'm adding 1.3 MB of data for GC every frame...
I'm working on shrinking that by having a lightweight tile function that contains only the bare essentials.

3:49 PM
Dont you just need, x, y, weight?
IIRC tht's what my objects had

Well, that's what I'm moving to.

Also, doesn't unity handle path fidning?
What do you have currently?

The problem is, I was using the entire tile object, that has quite a bit more than that.
There is a pathfinding system in Unity, I haven't figured out how I can adapt it to my needs.
My pathfinding allows for asymmetric applications.

4:09 PM
Well, my first order pass, that is far from complete, reduced the memory usage by 75%!
Still not good enough, however...

Nice

Actually, I really need to have a standardized test so I can tell if the stuff I'm doing is actually making a difference...
And that will have to wait...
I have an idea of how to do it, but...

Q: How game designers design vibration patterns?

frankishI am curious about creating and implementing vibration patterns for console controllers. (For the PS4 controller, if it makes a difference) There is a delay and motor speed parameter right? But also we can fade from left motor to right, or make them work together.... Is there a standardized way...

5:18 PM
@Almo Is Toys'r'us having issues?

Going bankrupt.

Oh :'( Where will I go dream of buying my LEGOs now?

@AlexandreVaillancourt they're doing a restructuring bankruptcy
they'll still exist.

5:34 PM
Oh!
Nice!
I won't buy my LEGOs from them though...
They're expensive there, compared to some other places..

6:23 PM
This is odd...

I think stuff like this is behind and NDA
So even if someone knew how people do it, they can't tell

You can't control those things like he wants to
Like you can trigger a rev up, but not slow it down
games that connect audio to it do it at a very basic level
like Rez did the kick drums on the heavy one and the hihat on the light one
but not to any degree of sonic accuracy

7:48 PM
I found that the PS4 dualshock controller has 1 bytes values for the left and right rumble strength

1 hour later…
9:03 PM
@Bálint right
but that's not much control
you can't alter these and get physical adjustments on timescales needed for audio coordination beyond very simple rhythm output.
Doesn't let you pick frequency
