Ben
1:09 AM
Good day chaps and chappettes

hey there @Ben, how're things going?

Ben
I'm using an excel document to generate an import document for files in our DMS. Problem is, there is no filename to map to the document records, so I need to append them from several fields.
Also, on the opposite end of the scale, I have had the weirdest request yet, after someone learning that I work in IT. "Can you fix my treadmill?"

@Ben LOL

Ben
Other than that, my day is going incredibly slow

well, personally, I can fix most things that run on electricity, provided I have a good service manual and can get parts :P

Ben
1:28 AM
@Shalvenay Yeah, it's not that hard when you are willing to put in the time and effort
I'm not though :P

@Ben yeah, there are so many things that die and get tossed because of simple stuff, like bad caps and whatnot

2 hours later…
Ben
3:37 AM
Hope everyone over in Florida are doing ok!

3 hours later…
6:19 AM
@MikeQ Someone did that. I believe they called it The Phantom Edit. (I don't think it completely removes Jarjar, since his actions drive the plot in a couple of places... it just removes as much as possible while still making everything make sense)

@Adeptus Personally, I'd cut as much Anakin as possible before I started on Jar Jar.

@Miniman He's much more of a central character, though. Especially if you're looking at the whole saga

@Adeptus I know :(

6:39 AM
Next best thing is Machete Order. Ignore Episode I, with the youngest (and maybe annoyingest?) Anakin. Keep the Episodes that actually contribute to the Vader/Skywalker arc.

Ben
7:21 AM
@Adeptus so... episodes 4, 5 and 6?

8:13 AM
@Ben No, it includes episodes 2 & 3 between 5 & 6 as a "now you know who Vader is, here's how he came to be".

8:38 AM
@Adeptus also cuts out a whole episode of Jar Jar XD
win win

1 hour later…
9:44 AM
hello

hello

whats up?

I actually just got offered a trip to New Dehli at work
for some job training and whatnot
pretty excited honestly
how about you?

@trogdor Congratulations! That sounds awesome.

lovely! well done

9:48 AM
@Miniman thanks
it's weird having that happen after complaining in the Not A Bar about work yesterday XD

3 hours later…
1:21 PM
Hi!

hello!

@Adeptus It kills off Jar-Jar fairly early in the film.

@BESW @doppelgreener @nitsua60 can you pin the above please?

Wow, they linked my answer in the Apocalypse World one!

oh shoot, they really did!

@eimyr IT IS DONE

yay you

@kviiri Congratulations!

1:52 PM
@kviiri Cool!! :D

@kviiri That's pretty awesome =)
Interesting that they're linking an answer that basically says "cool stuff, but you don't really need to buy it...." But I guess that's been their model all along, eh?

Yes, heh!
To be fair I added that bit retroactively.
So maybe they read the answer earlier and didn't remember it being there? :P

@kviiri Does this make you Internet Famous?

@Yuuki If this doesn't, I don't know what will!

If not, it does make kviiri Internet Fabulous

2:04 PM
I'd rather be SHINYYYY

@kviiri Mal Shiny or Tomatoa Shiny?

@NautArch Tamatoa of course. Been over half a year since I saw the film and still have that song looping in my head from time to time.

Or Tomatillo Shiny?

@kviiri Try watching it multiple times/day. I wake up with that soundtrack in my head.

@NautArch You have kids and Bluray, eh?

2:12 PM
@kviiri bingo bango bongo.

Kids these days don't know the pain of having to start the film by rewinding the VHS because of being too lazy to do it after watching the film.

Or just generally not being able to watch what you want when you want. No cartoons on? No cartoons on.

I remember this one time when I actually did rewind my cassette, and put it in the correct box. Then, later, I was so pleased with how easy it is to find the correct cassette because it's in its own box and not just some random box, and how nice it was to just start with the film because I had rewinded it after watching the last time. "I should do this more often", I thought, and never did do it again.
(putting cassettes in wrong boxes was more of my brother's style, though. I always despised that)

I remember wanting one of those dedicated rewinders :)
but in general, I didn't grow up in a big TV watching household.

I didn't like and still don't like TV much as a time-killer, but some shows and films are excellent.
I'm almost done with Breaking Bad, for instance. A really good series, that!

2:19 PM
yeah it is!

But despite my aversion to TV, I never thought of it as special because I had worse (or better?) anti-TV people around me. Some families quite close to ours dropped TV completely when the analog transmissions ceased.

i've become a bigger tv watcher as i got older. I'd watch cartoons/do homework when i got home from school until dinner when my parents got home andthen the TV generally stayed off and I read. I watch more TV now, some of which due to my wife.
but i've turned her into more of a reader lately :)
@kviiri didn't want to splurge on the $20 digital antenna?

@NautArch I think it's more of a psychological thing. It's easier to make a lifestyle change when not making the change would take active work
Also, TV ownership used to be taxed, but it only applied to functioning receivers. They kept their TVs and DVD players, but didn't get the digital converter.
So they saved a bit of money at it too :)
Anyway, at one point I thought video games would do TV in. Or movies, at least.

2:39 PM
> I refer to thirty minute increments as "samurai" because Seven Samurai is more or less 3.5 hours long.
10

@Yuuki that cracked me up

Yesterday's game went rather neatly. I had three out of five players present, they were raiding a city taken over by a mad wizard who had released golems and magical creatures to roam the streets and eat the people. (it's actually an elaborate ploy to kill everyone before the real bad guy corrupts them)
But anyway, I had a different vision on the quest and decided to change it, and I'm too lazy to do rewrites for just three players in a hurry, leaving me with some content that fit poorly. And then my players decide to hijack a giant eagle to fly over the poorly-planned stuff. I love them.
Never been happier to let the players do dungeon bypass!

> hijack a giant eagle to fly over the poorly-planned stuff
> giant eagle

2:55 PM
that sounds a lot of LoTR :D

I'm sure Frodo wishes that @kviiri was his DM.

@Yuuki Yeah, the town had some of them patrolling for intruders. But a clever combination of Charm Person and Speak with Animals allowed the party to convince they're actually friends of the Eagle's tender, and when the security measures (golems) offed the charmed tender, the Eagle got so mad it revolted against the system.

1 hour later…
3:58 PM
ohla mi amigos

@DForck42 Hola

@DForck42 From the two semester of Spanish I took, that should actually be "mis amigos".

@Yuuki okey dokey

Since "amigos" is plural, you have to use the plural possessive "mis" instead of the singular possessive "mi".

I have no idea tbh
how's everyone been? it's been a while since I've been in this room

4:08 PM
I've been well!
It's good to see you again :)
I'm visiting my home city in Australia again in a few days and really looking forward to it

@DForck42 Well, I think I went missing about the same time as you and for roughly the same amount of time.

@doppelgreener nice!

So it's as if nothing's changed!

@Yuuki lol
so my Bard is still alive and level 11 now, despite how many times I've been dropped by the Princes of the Apocalypse (it's truly a terrible module, do NOT recommend it)

4:26 PM
@Yuuki es verdad.

@nitsua60 hai

@DForck42 No, that's Japanese.

Hiya. So PotA's not doing it for you?

@Yuuki hai
@nitsua60 no, it's terrible and the makers should feel terrible and my dm should feel terrible for not modifying it to make it not terrible, it's that terrible

What sorts of things are manifesting as terrible?

4:30 PM
@nitsua60 it just turns into a grind fest once you really get into a temple
the fights are HARD, there's a lot of them, and there's usually not a lot of down town between them. at least the way we've been doing it

I can see that.

I've had a total of 3-4 times to actually rp in this game
in a game that's been running over a year

AL, or home?

home
and I generally LOVE doing dungeon crals, but this doesnt' feel like a dungeon crawl
and a part of it might be that he's trying to get us to finish this module asap so we're being railroaded hard

4:50 PM
PoTA is based on the Temple of Elemental Evil, right? I played through about a fourth of the original. If PoTA is anything like ToEE, it's boring, uncelar what you're actually trying to acomplish, and a bit overrated.
Which is a bit of a shame because The Village of Hommlet was a ton of fun.

5:03 PM
I'm planning on running SKT at some point
super excited for it

5:18 PM
I'm getting ready to run my players through Red Hand of Doom and am equally pumped.
@DForck42 One of my old groups wanted to play that one, but we ended up disbanding before we got the chance.

5:42 PM
@Adam sad day
@Adam which one's that one? don't think I've heard of it

Hey @trogdor and @BESW, what kind of dice do I need for Golden Sky Stories?

@DForck42 It's a 3.5 adventure where a Hobgoblic Cleric of Tiamat amasses an entire army of Goblinkin and Dragonkin along with a few true Dragons, and attempts to dominate the area.
I'm converting it to 5e as we go along.
Dragons inadvertantly have become a theme in this campaign, so I figured I might as well go all the way with it.

@Adam I'm currently running that.
How much are you deviating from baseline 3.5 PC construction rules?
And starting values for PCs?

I have basically no experience with 3.5 so I can't really say for sure. The PCs are starting at 5th level, which is about the same level as the adventure calls for as recall.

Its inconsistent.

5:56 PM
@Adam neat!

It says level 4 in one place.
@Adam there's a resource for upping the challenges for that module, on Giantitp forums.
If you find the PCs are handling it too easy.
What's your stat-generation rules?

> 1. What's your character's birthdate?
> 2. Map to a range of available US censuses.
> 3. Pick a zipcode based on on a hash of character's first name.
> 4. Determine stats using random numbers picked from various census data.

@Yuuki O_O

@Yuuki That's....abusable lol.

@godskook Abusable... how?

6:06 PM
@Yuuki That's my primary concern, yes.

I mean, if one of your players is willing to kill a few people so he can have an 18 in STR in 10 years (give or take depending on how close you are to the next census), I think the issue might not lie with the stat generation method...

@godskook I pretty much let them choose whatever method in the PHB they wanted. Most took point buy, one took standard array, and one rolled for it and got stat array-like results. All of them ended up with what I would consider average stats for their level.

So all some variation on 15/14/13/12/10/8 ish? You might be ok, then.

Yeah, that's about right. If anything is going to swing the fights in their favor, it's all the treasure they got from their first 3 adventures. But I've already accepted that I might have to do a little bit of work to compensate for that.

If Koth goes down like a chump, consider bumping Ozzy to CR 8
Also, the Stave they get as treasure for successfully looting Vraath's Keep, that thing can, iirc, 1-shot the Ghostlord, so consider tinkering with it.

6:13 PM
Thanks for the advice! I'll keep a close eye on things for sure.

Oh, for the Ozzy fight, the towers on the bridge are woefully under explained. Its not clear what their interiors are like, nor is it clear how many times around the stairs wrap on the way up the exterior of the tower to the sniper's nest.
And while I'm thinking about it:

@godskook Sweet. I'll definitely take a look at this. A quick skim over it though leads me to think that 5e itself helps alleviate some of the issues. For example, the concern with the staff, as far as I can tell, is that the heal spell in 3.5 hurts undead. In 5e, it has no effect at all on undead. They can cast heal on the ghostlord all they want, it won't do anything

It won't even heal him?

If it casts the heal spell, no. Heal explicitly has no effect on constructs or undead. dndbeyond.com/spells/heal

The problem is that Heal is a 6th level spell and I don't think they should be level 11/12 by the time they hit Ghostlord.
So that spell is swinging above their "weight class".
And also that it affects undead, but that's more arguable.

> Yay! Cavities!
Said no-one ever

6:51 PM
I mean, I could picture an overenthusiastic TSA agent saying that.

It's definitely still something that I'll look into, but the fact that in 5e says heal can't harm the ghostlord means that, at most, the fight goes on longer. Not that the fight is cut short by using the staff to drop the ghostlord to 1 hp in an instant.

@Adam Especially since Heal is the same spell level and class as Harm, and Harm can't hurt undead, but can hit everyone else.

Perhaps in 3.5, but in 5e Harm can still hurt undead. Some may be resistant to it, but it isn't necessarily ineffective.

Sure.

@Yuuki They wouldn't be that overenthusiastic a second time, I'm sure.

6:54 PM
Well, I was making a joke about full body cavity searches.

Oh, also, after the Ozzy fight, I don't think there's very good "direction" towards Tiri Kitor, but that's, as far as I can tell, the best next stop. Consider dropping a few more clues on the party before Ozzy so that they're thinking of it when Drellin falls.

@Yuuki I was making a joke about punches.

Hmm... pretty sure you'll be arrested for punching a TSA agent.
I mean, as someone who flies every now and then, I'm not a fan of the TSA either.

@godskook Yeah, I noticed a little bit of that when I was reading over the adventure. There were a few places I was thinking "What compels the players to go that way?"

Do I get a free dentist, in prison?

6:58 PM
Maybe?
Depends on your jurisdiction really, but I think prisoners have free healthcare.
Otherwise it'd be considered cruel and unusual punishment.

@Adam one idea is to make a useful NPC in Drellin's a half-elf, who redirects the PCs when they get back to Drellin's Ferry to go warn his/her Tiri Kitor relatives.

@Yuuki The joke's on them, then >_>

Or have captured Horde drop hints about Rhest

I feel miserable tonight but a friend is on vacation and we finally can go drink something together so I feel obligated to partecipate. Bye.

7:13 PM
@Adam Also, an easy power-bump that doesn't break versimilitude is to start adding Bards to later fights with the Hobgoblins. With optimizaiton, you can get up to a +4 Inspire Courage, which covers a multitude of sins against low-level PCs, but won't up the expected XP or GP values of the encounters significantly. So its a release valve against powerful PCs without anything feeling ret-conned.

Plus, drummer-boys are *VERY* thematic in war.

7:48 PM
@Adam I wouldn't say "based on" as much as I'd say "an homage to." I read somewhere (perhaps in the preface to PotA?) one of the writers saying "we thought 'what if the same forces had set up in Faerun--what would it be like?'" (paraphrasing) So you get the four 'separate' temples, the prophets, &c.

This morning, a popular Stack Overflow question hit a major milestone:

You’re not alone, jclancy. In the five years since this question was asked, there have been over a million other developers who got stuck in Vim and couldn’t escape without a bit of help. Indeed, the difficulty of quitting the Vim editor is a common joke among developers.

I’ve been told by experienced Vim users that this reputation is unfair, and I’m sure they’re right (even I’ve gotten the hang of it in the last few years). I think there are two reasons it’s easy to forget how to exi …

8:06 PM
@Adam our main goal is to stop the summoning of the elemental evils via throwing these specific magical weapons through portals to the perspective planes, cause that destroys the weapons for reasons?

8:42 PM
In your (respective) experience, what is more fun: A monster with low health and is hard to hit, or one with a lot of health and is easy to hit?

@GreySage 1.How extreme? 2.Which edition?

@doppelgreener None. Just tokens to keep track of your Dreams.
It's a diceless game.

@GreySage More health and easier to hit. Missing is boring and isn't fun.

@godskook No extremes, in general. I changed it to be more system agnostic

Without extremes, why not both?

8:46 PM
That's in general of course. Every once in a while it's fun to throw out a monster and say "No, a 23 doesn't hit" but if I had to pick a default, I would go with hp > ac

Marginally, yeah, I'd agree.

@GreySage INTERESTING monsters that actually behave like monsters are fun
3
ones that just stand there and take a beating are boring

@DForck42 I'm sorry, but do you have proficiency in the Frame Hammer you attacked that question with?

For more context, I am looking at the Grick Alpha from 5e. it has 18 AC, but only 75 hp. I am looking to make a weaker version of it so I can stick it with a bunch of Gricks and am wondering what I should change

Monsters that you cant hit at first are daunting, but after a while they just get frustrating after you keep missing over and over again. Fighter types especially, who may not have "save for half damage" type abilities, in particular can get really frustrated if they don't hit frequently.

8:51 PM
@GreySage isn't there a CR to AC/damage chart in the DMG?
I keep hearing about that in 5e

Don't waste your time with that. It's more work than it's worth imo

@godskook Yes. According to the chart, it has the AC of a CR 13 mob, and the hp of a CR 1

This was my experience in 4e, yeah. I never used enemies with super-high defenses. Instead I'd bump their health up if I wanted them to be tougher.

75 HP is CR 1 in the DMG?
That does not sound right.

(Our games got a lot happier when I used MM3 defensive maths and L1E health.)

8:53 PM
@godskook Well, its the platonic ideal of a CR 1. 13 AC, 75 HP, 12 DPR

@GreySage What's the average to hit bonus in your party? +6?

@Adam Sounds about right, +6 or +7

That seems HUGE for CR 1. Aren't 5e level 1s doing d8+4 or so?

@doppelgreener yeah the game has no dice in it, instead you spend Wonder for powers, and Feelings for checks for anything you are doing that isn't a power

@godskook In the chat room you setup.

8:56 PM
If it were me, I'd drop the AC down so that the melee characters have between a 45% and 55% chance of hitting (depending on how nice you want to be) and give them 3/4 max hp or so.
That could mean changing the AC by as little as 1.

55% = 9 or higher, so 9+7 = 16

Wouldn't 10 or higher be 55% since the 10 is included

@godskook yes

@Adam Yeah I guess 11 or higher would be 50% right? Darn the lack of 0!

@godskook CR in 5e is kinda not great, it's kind of a rough estimation tool but it's not perfect

9:02 PM
Yup. 11 or higher is 50%. So, if they have +7 to hit, they have a 50-50 shot at hitting the base grick alpha. You could lower the AC to 16 if you really wanted to. This isn't really a hard science.

No, but this discussion has been good to get some ideas.

@trogdor radical. thanks

@godskook at 75hp, a 5 player party averaged 5dmg / player / turn, it'd take 3 rounds to kill

Is 5 the new average party size?
In 5e?

The books suggest sticking to between 3 and 5.

9:05 PM
@godskook the average I've seen is 4-5 personally
not in the book mind you, just what I've seen when playing
it'd take a 3 player party averaging 5dmg / player / turn 5 rounds to kill it
if the monster's hitting for 5 dmg a round, it could deal 15-25 dmg, enough to potentially kill a level 1 player

39
A: What standard party size is D&D 5e designed for?

MinimanAs you're aware, the DMG's guidelines for building encounters are designed for parties of three to five characters: The preceding guidelines assume that you have a party consisting of three to five adventurers. (page 83) Many of the published adventures contain recommendations: Lost Min...

@DForck42 How exciting!

@DForck42 5e level 1s are only <16 HP, right?

A barbarian who rolled max Con could get up to 17

@godskook the dice range is d4 to d12, a maxed out barb could have 12 + 5 = 17hp

9:11 PM
Jinx!

@DForck42 So at 15 min damage, this hypothetical CR 1 is dropping a PC per hit, unless he targets the Barbarian, than it is 2 hits?

@BESW Maybe, but this originally started as a general sense of fun type question

That seems like a lot.

@godskook That was 15 damage over 3 rounds. Per round, it wouldn't even drop one PC assuming ~5 damage per round

9:15 PM
Oh, misread that part.
Derp.

lol
and this is all broad assumption stuff, I'd have to look at some cr 1's to see what they actually hit at

@DForck42 5e minimum hit dice size is d6 though.

@Adam is it? might be getting 3.5 mixed up
are wizards d4 in 3.5?

In LMoP, the level 1 PCs fight a CR1 bugbear the first session, 16AC 27HP, +4 to hit and 11 damage

PF and 5e have d6 minimum, 3.5 is d4 for Wizards, Psions and Sorcerers.
I think Wilders too.

9:18 PM
So 50% change or less to deal 11 damage. Harder to hit than the ideal, but only 3-5 hits to kill it

but yeah, I've began to think of CR, or fight balance, as the likelihood of dropping a character before the fight's over
the higher the likelihood, the higher the CR

...how were you thinking of it before?

@BESW spend this many points of experience to get this monster
as the DMG in 4e and 5e train you to think

Huh. I teethed my sense of encounter balance on 4e, but it never occurred to me that XP budgets were instead of a sense of one's party and how their survival stacked up to the specific monsters.
[Spock eyebrow] Fascinating.

@BESW lol

9:26 PM
@DForck42 No model is perfect, but some models are useful. That training in viewing it through XP is a useful model, but its not perfect. You should expect to have to adapt it to how you run your game and your players react to the game.
4

@doppelgreener the Dreams thing that @BESW mentioned actually don't have anything to do with checks for doing things, they are just something everyone can hand out to each other that is needed to further connections to other people past 2
or some such number

Just try to avoid sessions that are more than nine samurai long.

@trogdor Just, in terms of props he'll need that's the thing.

@Yuuki 4.5 hours?

I usually run ~16 Samurai, @Yuuki
For D&D 3.5

9:29 PM
@BESW yes this is fair, he should get as many things to count dreams as he can manage, I just wanted it to be clear that they were not a thing that directly effected chance of success in checks

@Yuuki I used to play in a group that had sessions that were entirely > 10 Samurai long

@GreySage That's a rather short hurdle?

@godskook Sorry, I was thinking hours, and I botched my conversion to Samurai

My old college group played 8 to 12 samurais at a time, but my current group is more like 4 to 6.

Maybe it's because I play online and therefore get distracted more easily but I don't think I could do an online session longer than eight or nine samurai.

9:31 PM
@GreySage Its ok, converting to Samurai took Tom Cruise an entire movie. He spent many many samurai on it.

@BESW ok I don't understand what this means XD

@godskook Don't you mean Tom Cruise?

7 hours ago, by Yuuki
> I refer to thirty minute increments as "samurai" because Seven Samurai is more or less 3.5 hours long.

@Yuuki thank you much

We typically run about 10 samurai

9:34 PM
Sometimes we only play for one or two samurai.

I'm going to start measuring things in Samurai unconsciously now, and it's going to confuse people

@GreySage That just sets you up for the pun reveal.
Win-win.

@BESW @trogdor The context is that I've got a suitcase open behind me and I'm picking what stuff I need to bring with me. I've got tokens, but if I need specific dice that's important too.

@doppelgreener yeah, for this only tokens would be needed
if we aren't playing anything else then dice are not necessary

9:38 PM
For GSS, you have flat numbers for your stats instead of modifiers, which are compared against other peoples' numbers to determine success. Dreams let you increase your relationship numbers, and your relationships to and from other people give you bonus points that you can spend to temporarily increase your stat numbers for one comparison.

cost to strengthen connectionTo Costs
1: 5 Dreams (0 with Impression Check)
2: 5 Dreams (0 with Impression Check)
3: 5 Dreams
4: 8 Dreams
5:12 Dreams
the first two points don't technically need dreams
but yeah beyond that point
and I guess maybe the checks can only be made when characters first meet
so after that point you definitely need dreams for it

@trogdor don't let your dreams be dreams?

@DForck42 uh, I dunno?

@DForck42 Let your dreams be memes

I mean, in this game all anyone apparently dreams about is making friends with people XD
which is cool with me

9:50 PM
@trogdor "making friends"

lol

Yes, well, the way you get dreams is, somebody else in the group thinks you did something cute or helpful.

yes

@BESW "cute or helpful"

you only get them when someone else hands them out to you when you did something
though thankfully as many people as there are in the game (minus yourself) can give them to you whenever you do something that fits
it just depends on if they feel like you deserved it or not

9:55 PM
@trogdor "did something"

are you fishing for dreams right now? that isn't how it works :P

@trogdor no, I was just messing around lol

I do that sometimes too

@DForck42 "tee hee"

@Yuuki :-D

My GMing drops off precipitously after six or seven samurai, or after the 20th 40th samurai of the day, whichever comes first. (Some in this room have played with me when it's locally 22 44 o'samurai and can probably attest.)
(I botched the conversion, too.)

hey there @Yuuki

@SmokeDetector 🔥

I need to get better at calling for breaks. Four samurai is about the most I can go without my brain starting to re-wire itself for silly.

@BESW Drink a liter before the session starts. You'll get the reminder around the right time =)

I'm not sure that's what they mean by "biological clock."

@nitsua60 a liter of what though? :P

@trogdor If you do olive oil you'll hit that tantalizing 5000-calorie goal. It's in your reach!

@nitsua60 eeeewwwww
I like cooking with that but chugging it sounds worse than awful

(Actually, you'll hit 5000 cal about 60% of the way through. It takes a liter to hit rock-bottom, though.)

10:29 PM
yeah, hospital rock bottom
