What if that store wanted to sell that bread in several months when they're open again

12:32 AM
@GodEmperorDune I have no clue how fast dispersion would be, but it's on the other side of the city from me.

@Yuuki good luck :/

Oh hey

user15026
Chapo?

@Ash chapo trap house
i've heard it described as a parody of what right wing radio would be like if it was politically left
i heard this from an interview with one of the people that does it
but that was the original intention, now its taken as a serious thing and not parody?

user15026
hm.

the trans activists in my timeline were upset with it a while back because of transphobia and have basically written it off now

2:54 AM
My brain has difficulty processing this headline

2 hours later…

well
if games are off topic on bridge
and they're off topic here
where to discuss games

The Bridge
Ignore all rules

@Unionhawk moves half of anime girls from maid cafe to bridge
actually we have anime boys too.

the more I look the weirder I feel

1:29 PM
> the administration takes "all cyber related issues very seriously."
I why
why call it cyber

T H E C Y B E R
This isn't even the first time the white house has gotten phished this year
Gizmodo Special Projects phished them and brought them to a page that basically said "YOU'RE AN IDIOT, WE KNOW WHO YOU ARE, WE WILL CONTACT YOU SOON"
iirc nobody clicked but at least one or two responded

1:44 PM
all those gifs
IT'S KILLING ME
Also yay all claims like "high demand" are US centric
world outside US does not exist, it's all hell-zone out there, we shall nuke it all.
> If I can make it in the cybersecurity industry, then so can you!
that's not how it works

I mean, to be fair, we might

that's like stephen hawking saying "hey I might be the smartest person alive but if I can be this smart then so can you"
then again I actually argued over this a while ago and what I was told was that the "if I can do it everyone can" thingies are just there so that people don't fear joining the industry

1 hour later…
ah yes
famous news app snapchat

lets' check da news
oh my

yeah
It's about 30% weirder than normal

> the apple ifidget
snapchat news best news

no

3:10 PM
And now i can know that ifidget is coming too! It was on that one platform with fact checking
this was on snapchat's discover section.

4:09 PM
seriously?!
Mnuchin: Won't commit to keeping Harriet Tubman in the $20.

@GodEmperorDune I am pretty sure Trump wouldn't be opposed to reinstating slavery.

@StrixVaria most likely
hey look, we're moving that direction already
The Missouri GOP legislature just LOWERED the minimum wage in St Louis by $2.30 https://twitter.com/MissouriGOP/status/902978507558367232

4:27 PM
I saw the fight for 15 account post a good point about waffle house's practices
Since they pay their people the tipped employees wage but also expect them to fight potentially dangerous conditions to get to work

Breaking: US requiring Russia to close consulate in San Francisco & diplomatic annexes in DC & NYC by Sept. 2nd, State Dept. says

I'm sure Eric Garland and Louise Mensch already have really stupid takes on this

1 hour later…
How can I get paid to just type the number 0 every day

@Unionhawk it's 50:1 actually
> The odds of Joe Biden “meeting Trump at an event and punching him right in the face” are 100:1.

That's probably about right
I'm sure he wants to

@GodEmperorDune Really? A 2% chance? I'd put it much higher, like 200:1

@MBraedley don't forget what happened when he touched the orb

5:55 PM
Oh god I thought we were done orbsplaining like 2 months ago
which feels like 2 years ago

the orb and covfefe will never be forgotten

despite the constant negative orb covfefe send tweet

user15026
@GodEmperorDune oh, prop bets

user15026
People will prop bet on anything given the chance

what is a prop bet?

5:59 PM
I assume the whole concept of "odds that @Uni will eat at chipotle this tuesday 3:2"

user15026
A proposition bet or side bet - basically, in sports its any bet that isn't on the game outcome. In reality, it's any bet that isn't on a game's score or outcome

user15026
Like "person x will score over x runs" in baseball or whatever

user15026
Basically, bookmakers can make prop bets for damn near anything

user15026
We had them for first blood in DOTA matches during the International, stuff like that

user15026
It does take a certain amount of math to set odds, I don't actually know how they decide that. We'd just get our lines from various bigger bookmakers like Pinnacle and whatever.

user15026
6:04 PM
(oh god I still know so much about sports betting)

@Ash plus you made all those bitcoins

user15026
@GodEmperorDune I technically never earned anything in Bitcoin

@Ash i mean its not a real currency so...

user15026
(they'd convert it to CAD and then give me cheques)

hahaha

user15026
6:06 PM
(so sometimes I'd have to wait if conversion took time)

why not just pay CAD in the first place?

user15026
@GodEmperorDune Because most of their money at any one time was tied into BTC so they could pay out bets and poker winnings

@Ash oh right it was online
that makes a certain amount of sense

user15026
Yep, it was all online

user15026
(It still is. I check periodically, out of a weird sense of "was this even real")

user15026
6:09 PM
(the whole thing is insane because I technically worked for a consulting company that dealt in BTC related things, not for the sportsbook proper....even though it's all the same people under the hood)

user15026
Sorry, that was just one of my more insane jobs.

yay for shell corporations

user15026
Which got funny when people who used the sportsbook would see we were located in...wherever it was, soemwhere warm

user15026
adn they'd ask about it

user15026
meanwhile I'm shivering through a canadian winter :P

6:13 PM
@Ash The basic rule for many of the bets is that you want the total payout to be the same regardless of the outcome. For instance, with an over/under bet, where the individual payout on both sides is the same, you want to set it such that roughly half the players will take the over, and the other half will take the under.

user15026
@MBraedley Well, yeah, that I know, but for some of the more ridiculous prop bets I don't know how we get there.

@Ash i guess experience and actuarial type math?
Walmart undercuts Trump’s official $40 USA hats with $9.99 knockoffs. http://time.com/money/4922958/walmart-hat-trump-maga-usa/?utm_campaign=time&utm_source=twitter.com&utm_medium=social&xid=time_socialflow_twitter https://t.co/1AVQCiv7c4
i'm normally not supportive of walmart but...

lmao
good
capitalism at work
or something

6:30 PM
proof that capitalism is good
with communism this wouldn't happen smh

with communism we wouldn't have video games
because the only reason people enter the games industry is money
make u think

without communism we wouldn't have glory to arstotzka

I should play that game again
which reminds me
a friend of mine and I had a sleepover

he was playing papers please on my pc
he stayed up playing and I just slept
he woke me up at 5am screaming after he panicked when my pc BSOD'ed
I remember turning off the pc and telling him to go sleep, and then going back to sleep.
since then I hate people
communism made me lose precious minutes that I could spend sleeping

6:55 PM
Scaramucci's amazon wishlist
> ancap

he followed some rogue potus staff type account yesterday, so scaramucci,,,, welcom to #TheResistance

I should mail him a copy of the communist manifesto

@Unionhawk real rogue or fake rogue?

I'm like 90% sure that no rogue account is real
first of all

6:59 PM
emergency bonus content: this is what comes up when you search jeb@jeb.org https://t.co/gWX9Eo7j5H
JEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEB

so I'm going to go with fake

wait
does that mean that everyone can see everyone's wishlists?
uh oh

Probably
You might be able to mark it private, I don't remember

I mean seriously
why is it public by default
Some people might have stuff they want others to not see, like, just look at scaramucci

it's a weird default, yes
but at least it doesn't tie a shipping address to it by default

7:08 PM
I mean yeah
but I can still see how it can go very wrong

I mean meh
very wrong is an overstatement in this case I think

eh
there's a cultural effect

most rich people are anarcho-capitalists
it's just science

I wouldn't want people to see my wishlists for example
I mean there are things everyone knows
but very little amount of people dare to actually talk about those stuff
like rich being anarcho capitalists
I mean
we know that nazis are dangerous
but when they go out saying that they're ready to kill, we still talk about that

maybe it's a metaphorical ethnostate
make u think

7:31 PM
Missouri GOP lawmaker: Person who vandalized Confederate statue should be "hung from a tall tree"… https://twitter.com/i/web/status/903285013260767232

that's not even a dogwhistle that's a goddamn train horn

user15026
dogwhistle?

@Ash a dogwhistle is a thing only dogs can hear because it's high pitched

A dogwhistle is something that is meant to signal to a specific portion of the base while seeming innocent to an outside observer

in a political context, it's using keywords and concepts that don't sound alarming to most people but have very specific, profound meaning to a subgroup

user15026
7:40 PM
@GodEmperorDune That much is obvious.

user15026
@GodEmperorDune ew, okay, I get that now, that's nasty

@Ash an example of this is when trump says "they are taking away our culture"

There we go, I was struggling to come up with a good example
because lately these idiots just flat out say things

that is a white supremacy reference to their belief that the existence of non-whites are contaminating the superior white race and this contamination causes all of society's problems

2 hours later…
9:41 PM
Sheriff David Clarke resigns: report http://hill.cm/pADlRDp https://t.co/dEQs2pSFD3
Not particularly comforting given the lack of reason given but at least he's not a member of law enforcement for now

10:25 PM
@TimStone probably because he's about to accept something in the trump admin

10:38 PM
nyt pls (cw: generic transphobe shit)

@Avery ugh wtf NYT opnion

I mean
there's 2 problems
1) she did what was best for humanity and country by exposing war crimes, so... "She also put an untold number of innocent people’s lives in danger." is BS.
If anything she saved lives.
2) "she wouldn't get commuted if it weren't for her transition" is such a terrible way to look at it

I think it's an exaggeration to claim that what she did was unambiguously good
@Avery It doesn't say that, as I read it

user15026
@Avery She did what she thought was best, and that's going to be a contentious thing.

@murgatroid99 that's how i read it.
@Ash meh

10:43 PM
@Avery 2 paragraphs in and they do an offhanded deadname

user15026
The way the article is written is hella gross and dismissive.

@murgatroid99 "But it’s hard to imagine Ms. Manning receiving such a positive reception — never mind a spread in Vogue — if she still identified as Bradley, transgender being the liberal cause du jour. "

@Ash yes it is

user15026
@Avery that's speaking more about her reception in society

user15026
It's not referring to the commuted sentence

10:45 PM
Yeah, that's how I read it too

user15026
So I don't agree with your point 2) in the sense of I don't think they're directly saying that

user15026
mind you they're saying a lot of actual garbage in there, so I don't know if that's better or worse, that they're not saying this one garbage thing

user15026
I mean I don't get the unabashed love everyone has for her - she seems neat, but I don't quite get how she became a media darling

user15026
Mind you I still have yet to have an ELI5 explanation on what all happened there that actually gives me enough info on what she actually did for me to judge teh past actions

user15026
all I really go on is that everyone seems to see her as a super magical LGBT icon sparkle fountain

10:47 PM
@Ash true.

@GodEmperorDune Is it still deadnaming when you explicitly distinguish between the current name and the previous name? I've seen that sort of thing in other contexts, when a transgender person was famous with their previous name and people might be more familiar with that name than with the current name

user15026
which she might be, but I just find any time people shove people on these giant pedestals to be super weird

user15026
Like it's gotten to the point where I don't think anyone can say anything negative about her without the internet shit kicking them

@murgatroid99 given the overall tone of the article, i don't give the writer the benefit of the doubt

user15026
Like articles like this are monstrous awful, and it pisses me off that this person got such a big soapbox to yell monster things on

10:48 PM
@Ash problem is they're always attacking her the same way and their arguments don't make sense

user15026
but I just find the whole....idk, almost canonization of her is just SUPER WEIRD

the point that "people were harmed because of what chelsea manning leaked" is valid

user15026
@Avery Ah, see that's part of what I mean - you automatically assume anyone negative is "them" and not "us"

she went to prison for that leak

OK, I honestly don't see what's so bad about this article

10:50 PM
@Ash point taken
(quick note: I'll be offline, reading books)

@murgatroid99 stuff like this:
> Not only did Ms. Manning violate her oath by assuming the right to determine what classified information should be made public, but she also did so in cooperation with a megalomaniac who would go on to play an outsize role ensuring Mr. Trump’s defeat of Hillary Clinton.

@GodEmperorDune That seems basically accurate

user15026
It's using incredibly overblown language

@murgatroid99 but how could she have known that assange would sabotage an election years later when she leaked?

user15026
It's being intentionally contentious and divisive - almost propaganda like in its speech patterns

10:52 PM
it's basically blaming her for assange being an asshole

@GodEmperorDune I think that's more about the fact that the same people who are praising what she did hate the guy she did it with

Actually I'm back for a bit, "them"/"us"ing is really being prevalent lately, especially online. I feel like I may have been affected too. Thanks for pointing that out.
off to thinking and reading

@murgatroid99 she also served prison time for doing so, assange did not

user15026
@Avery The problem is that right now, things are super scary and it's really easy to deal with it by gonig "well it's not peopel like me" for whatever value of "me". It's basically othering at its best.

but anyway, i think this may be the most dismissive thing in the piece
> transgender being the liberal cause du jour

user15026
10:55 PM
And I see that a lot around people like her, where people just can't see the forest for the trees, and if you aren't 100% with people like her then you're against all of it and 100% awful and not one of the good people

user15026
@GodEmperorDune That made me want to punch stuff. I know, I know, kicking is better but still

@Ash yes, being a transgender person is not the latest fashion, it is a thing people are born with and have been born with for a very long time

@GodEmperorDune I don't think that's what that is supposed to mean

user15026
@GodEmperorDune It's the whole "we've always been here" thing. Like trans people aren't new, we just see it different now.

I think it's more that championing transgender rights is the popular liberal cause

user15026
10:57 PM
(I read a really fascinating post about the whole "we've always been here" as it relates to autism and the idea of changlings and such. I should find that again.)

@murgatroid99 the other reason i think transgender rights are so big on the liberal side right now is because conservatives started picking on trans people after they lost the gay marriage fight

user15026
@GodEmperorDune because well we can't stop the gays but maybe we can stop the <insert slur of choice here>

@GodEmperorDune I thought it was because transgender people felt more comfortable publicly expressing the identity after conservatives lost the gay marriage fight, and that sparked a reaction among regressives

@murgatroid99 i'm sure you don't intend it, but that reads a little bit like "if trans people weren't out, they wouldn't have these problems right now"

@GodEmperorDune I mean, they'd probably have different problems

11:01 PM
but yes, i agree that trans people became more visible around that same time too, and that may have sparked it
because regressives were looking for a new target

In any case, the overall thesis of that op-ed seems to me to be that Manning's position as champion of a popular liberal cause has given her moral authority and social popularity in some circles that far exceeds what the author believes she deserves in light of her actions. And I think that's a legitimate argument to make.

@murgatroid99 yes, that is a legitimate argument to make, and probably would've been more effective without being so hyperbolic about her and fashion

@GodEmperorDune I read that section as establishing the supposedly unreasonable social popularity that the author wanted to argue against
And it doesn't really seem that hyperbolic. That section is mostly direct quotations

back again. I think that I have a theory on how everything works with the them/us thing at least for me.
Personally I've noticed that I cared less about all that and considered all as one while stuff was ok, but now stuff are downhill and I'm feeling weak and lonely (basically I pretty much lost a notable chunk of people I care about over the last few days due to reasons out of my control), and I think that splitting people into two and declaring war on the "other side" kinda makes me feel not alone or weak. That was someone I was happy of not being. Something I saw as a problem. However, n

user15026
@Avery We all want to belong somewhere, there's nothing wrong with that. But when we use our place of belonging to shove other people out, or assume if they're not in our group, then they must be on the bad side 100% of the time simply because they're not the same, well, it's not awesome.

11:11 PM
I know

user15026
Basically, any extremist ideology (white supremacy, fundie Christianity etc) is like...othering at it's worst.

yeah I'm kinda feeling like I'm slipping out of something like alt-right atm
This is such a weird feeling

user15026
It's super easy to slide into this stuff especially when you're in a marginalized position

yeah it's like
I'm like wait how

user15026
because everyone wants to belong and to feel good about themselves and to have people to share their shit with but if that comes at the expense of othering anyone who isn't the thing, it's not awesome. And it can be so sneaky!

user15026
11:15 PM
(I grew up queer in the Mennonite faith, so I see some of this stuff from the MOST RIDICULOUS angles.)

I've definitely read similar stuff about some of the alt-right and Trump supporters. People feel left out or marginalized, and they turn to people who seem to be similar to them, and give them someone to blame for their problems.

user15026
@murgatroid99 Exactly!

user15026
It can happen anywhere people don't feel like they're being given what they deserve, for whatever value of thign.

the biggest problem is

user15026
It's the degree to which you take that that's the problem.

11:19 PM
I think there's a degree of inertia, or maybe the sunk cost fallacy. If you're deep in and emotionally invested, it can be easier to keep going deeper than to turn around and go "maybe this is wrong. Maybe this group isn't good"

user15026
@murgatroid99 better the devil you know, and all that

@Avery I've actually examined that carefully and made a review of it on philosophical level and I still fell for it and that's all spooky like how I didn't realize this

user15026
@Avery This is how people get into like cults and things, and then their neighbours go "but Janey was so normal I don't know what happened"

Yes it's very creepy

user15026
It's slow, its tricky, and then you're up past your ankles.

11:23 PM
I'm like still very shivering and it's very much mentally like "wait shit how who did I become" because the self I'm showing here is actually like, I've picked much bigger sides and said non awesome things and like I've become someone I explicitly didn't want to become and I didn't notice it as it happened and if it weren't for now I wouldn't notice it and like it's still my brain is overloaded

user15026
@Avery step one - slow, deep breaths

user15026
you are not a monster, and this is not hopeless!

user15026
You recognize it. Thats good. That's a good good first step.

user15026
Don't beat yourself up. This shit can happen to anyone

user15026
(When I was in highschool, I drank the Christian koolaid something fierce, it made me not very nice to many people. I've since managed to reconcile my faith with not being a jerk to people, but it was work to get there. So trust me, you're not a lost cause or anything.)

11:31 PM
I remember in high school and through part of college being basically a hardcore /r/atheism level atheist, and arguing it passionately, mostly with my family. I've mostly cooled down since then.
I also got really into Ayn Rand's Objectivist philosophy (which is basically a libertarianism variant) after reading the entire Sword of Truth series

user15026
I think most people go through a stage kinda like that. It's more what you do about it that matters.
