@AlanMunn LOL <3 <3 <3

@CarLaTeX :)

@AlanMunn Have you read the OP comment?

@CarLaTeX Yes, it's very nice.

He was very kind, we should thank him!

@CarLaTeX I've added a new comment.

3:54 AM
@AlanMunn Seen! Great! @PauloCereda: tex.stackexchange.com/questions/384831/…

@AlanMunn OOOH NEW DUCKS YAAAAAY
@egreg :D
@CarLaTeX awww Alan is too kind. <3 I think the community is the one to be praised, as we all try to be as friendly as possible, with always a great sense of humour and silliness. DEK himself is a very witty man, full of wonderful remarks; I think nothing would honour him better than a community that carries on this lifestyle. And we cannot forget that the shortest distance between two persons is a smile (Victor Borge). :)

@PauloCereda <3 <3 <3

10:27 AM
@PauloCereda Thank you for the edit to my tikzduck question!

10:41 AM
@CarLaTeX It's part of our policy. :) Packages originated from questions are marked. :)

10:58 AM
@PauloCereda Oooh

11:21 AM
@StefanKottwitz I am just incapable of remembering passwords. After a complete reinstall of my OS and currently installing TL17 i tried to log in to the forums. Managed to get a new pw for LC, but gL is making troubles. My profile accessed from phone shows my old email address, but you changed it to the new one just a couple months back. I am very confused.
@StefanKottwitz In other news, we get a little bit more spam than usual for the last few days on LC. Always about the blue man pills.

@Johannes_B I noticed and killed s̶p̶a̶m̶m̶e̶r̶s̶ spam posts

@StefanKottwitz I just copied my old firefox stuff to the new home. Everything is fine.

@Johannes_B I'm discussing anti-spam methods at the SHA2017

@StefanKottwitz Good to hear. By the way, do you know James Veitch?

good ideas: blocking cloud IP ranges (bots come from there, but no real user) and favicon checks
@Johannes_B the scam mail responder

11:35 AM
@StefanKottwitz Yes :-)
Installing [1326/3457, time/total: 35:20/01:33:15]: genealogy [4k]

@AlanMunn That's a lovely new avatar you have there. It must have been drawn using tikz.

@CarLaTeX Aha! Looking at the pic, I think it must be very simple to draw using code.

11:51 AM
@JasperLoy Of course! :)

12:12 PM
Could anyone pointm e towards an alternative mirror for a texlive installation?
Doesn't have to be 2017
I've been downloading for some 20+ hours (over 3 attempted installations) and I keep getting errors
I'm using the texlive from the tug website atm

@1010011010 pick one from ctan.org/mirrors

@PauloCereda Please try this one:
\documentclass[tikz]{standalone}

\usepackage{tikzducks}

\begin{document}
\begin{tikzpicture}
\duck
\path[fill=blue, start angle=0, end angle=150, radius=0.5] (1.4,1.75) arc;
\path[fill=blue,rotate=-15] (0.3,2.05) ellipse (0.6 and 0.15);
\path[fill=brown, rounded corners=2, rotate=-30] (0.4,1.2) rectangle (0.7,2.2);
\path[fill=brown, rounded corners=1, rotate=-30] (0.5,0.8) rectangle (0.6,1.3);
\end{tikzpicture}
\end{document}

12:58 PM
@samcarter OH MY

@samcarter I think you should add a number of node names to the duck (duckleftwing, duckrightwing etc ...)

@UlrikeFischer And use these nodes to position things like the cricket bat? Good Idea!

@UlrikeFischer ooh duck points
@samcarter: if you could not come to TUG 2018, I will try to submit a second keynote proposal and talk about tikzducks.

1:13 PM
@samcarter I'm so happy to have a tikzducks package! :):):)

@Joseph: ah good to see you around, pal. :)

@samcarter You could also name some of the pathes. Then one could eg draw along the hair.

Yep, just popped up to comment on a comment by cfr yesterday, but found out the question was delete by the user.

Ouch.

Yep, just remembered you 'cause cfr's comments were like "I wouldn't use abntex2 for X, much less for a thesis".
LOL

1:22 PM
LOL probably my fault. :)

Like you indoctrinated cfr? Doesn't look like you... hahaha

@UlrikeFischer Thanks for this suggestion! Do you mean a syntax like \path[name path=hair]?

@Joseph Nah but I probably poisoned people with my ABNT rants. Nothing towards abntex2 though, which I believe it's good. :)

But his points were cogent. One couldn't disagree with him. "This class [ufsc] is parasitic on abntex2 which is parasitic on memoir"... "Lots of weird spaces"... "Redundant packages"... Reminded me of a typically Brazilian thing called "gambiarra".

@samcarter Yes (but better look it up in the manual, I always confuse tikz options)

1:27 PM
After all those years, I just found out that it's people's obsession with and worshiping of the rules that is annoying, more annoying than the rules themselves.

@Joseph Looks like a TeX version of Quadrilha from Drummond. :)
@Joseph indeed.

By the way, last semester I found out that some people don't like me being ironic with ABNT. I was summoned for a tribunal-like meeting with the campus director and the lady told me she would be scared of me because I wrote in the syllabus that abnt rules aren't a masterpiece of typographical skills.
A surreal situation. She was complaining I cited Bringhurst and accused me of not explaining to the students why I made that claim.

@Joseph Holy cow, that's insane.

\listfiles
\documentclass{memoir}
\usepackage[paperwidth=4cm, paperheight=5cm]{geometry}
\usepackage{graphicx}
\begin{document}
page content
\end{document}

@Johannes_B Señor penguino.

1:32 PM
Can someone reproduce the big page? Swapping geometry and graphicx works. Not happening with article.
@PauloCereda Hola Señor Pato.

@samcarter: could you add a penguin-themed duck to honour our resident Spanish-speaking German anthropomorphic penguin resident?

@Johannes_B neat. Will look at it.

Well, just because I freed my students from following abnt, she (and they) should be thanking me. I wish I had brought LaTeX into the discussion. "Do you realize you can frighten them? If I were your student, I'd be frightened, I'd feel pushed away by your coldness and insensitivity!"

@Joseph Jesus!

Who said typography doesn't affect people? They have weird reactions to an irony + typography mix. I suddenly realized that a book like the TeX book and others by Knuth wouldn't be published in Brazil. His irony and jokes would be censored and edited out.

1:37 PM
@Joseph Politically correctness is something that's affecting us all, sadly.
@Joseph Knuth wouldn't stand a chance with our editorial rules.

@UlrikeFischer @Thanks. minimal of tex.stackexchange.com/questions/384945/…

Yep, guess I'll just publish my Latex intro as an underground manifesto against academic b***. In glossy paper, limited edition, scarlet velvet-like hard cover, hand-numbered and signed by the author.

@Joseph Will I get an autographed version? :)

@Pau
@PauloCereda (ops!!!) sure you'll do.

@Joseph yay. :)

1:45 PM
(just guess people here will miss the unintended typo joke)

@CarLaTeX <3

@Joseph LOL

@PauloCereda worst penguin ever :)

@samcarter ooooooooh
@samcarter Super Mario penguins. ^^

@samcarter I like it <3

1:51 PM
@PauloCereda cute :)

@samcarter I wouldn't trust that one it reminds me of this chicken penguin

@Johannes_B Thanks :)
@DavidCarlisle The haircut already exists (not yet checked in to the public version) for an arara duck :)

@samcarter you could create a Batman duck too!

@PauloCereda Would be a nice addition to the -Super- TeXman duck, I was planing to do

@samcarter ooh
@samcarter: you know you've opened Pandora's box.

2:06 PM
@PauloCereda I fear so...

@UlrikeFischer I just saw the answer. Is it worth to fix it for geometry? Since, really, with using memoir, you don't need geometry. Yet, many people will use it in combination nevertheless.

@Johannes_B You could try ... see chat.stackexchange.com/transcript/41?m=38018139#38018139. (Try out with lualatex your example with article and without graphicx to see the problem.)

@UlrikeFischer Oh my. :-/

2:43 PM
question: when I reject an edit, can I leave a comment for the editing user with an explanation?
I don't want to use the 'causes harm' option when the edit does not cause harm

1 hour later…
3:58 PM
@Joseph I just had a surreal discussion with our Graduate School thesis office: they want per-chapter bibliographies and appendices formatted like chapters.

2 hours later…
5:29 PM
Hello everyone. I recently developed a Stata package to generate the TikZ code for flow diagrams in research studies. I was wondering if anyone knew of similar I'm not sure if my question would be flagged or taken down. I was wondering if this community knows of similar solutions or developers developing similar packages to this.
When I search SSC, the largest database of actively maintained Stata modules/packages, there does not appear to be anyone developing solutions based on TikZ code but a few more developing LaTeX-based modules.
My reason is that I'm trying to turn the package into a community-driven package where new functionality is added by developers via pull requests.

@IsaacD. if you are not actually asking a tex question I guess it's probably off topic as the network format doesn't really encourage "announcement" type postings. I don't see any stata related tex packages on ctan

There's actually a Stata-related TeX package - You install it in Stata via 'ssc install sjlatex' since it was created by the Stata Journal. And you use \usepackage{stata} in the preamble.

@Marijn Usually you should look on meta or open a new question there. Probably you can't leave one (at least I don't know where).

That's actually the reason why I would ask my question -- there are a few LaTeX-related solutions in Stata but there does not seem to be much of a connection between that community and the broader TeX community.
So, if I am looking to collaborate with someone else in the Stata-related LaTeX area, there isn't a clear path on how to find such people.
I see, thanks for the input David Carlisle and TeXnician, nonetheless.

@IsaacD. the old forums texhax mail list and comp.text.tex newsgroup are both still running and would take announcements of new software as in topic, but they don't have the reach of stackexchange these days, but as I say announcements don't fit the format here (but I don't make the rules:-) Personally I've never used stata so can't really offer much more help

5:45 PM
Thanks for the advice! I suppose I also just have to wait for developers to somehow stumble upon it and give a helping hand

@DavidCarlisle You seem to be in and out the last days so I want to check if you saw chat.stackexchange.com/transcript/message/39180967#39180967

@UlrikeFischer yes thanks although as you noticed I'm more out than in at the moment:-) I should at least add a link in the ltbugs link page I have on gh so I don't forget.

@DavidCarlisle I can add a bug report if you want. Where exactly?

@UlrikeFischer I suppose latexbug is the official place (although a gh issue in dpctex/longtable would also work)

@DavidCarlisle OK will do it asap.

6:19 PM
thanks

6:49 PM
@AlanMunn I find the whole business very odd: as you probably know, in the UK formatting it more-or-less down to individuals, and as long as the examiners are happy you can do what you like

@JosephWright Yes, I don't know where the tradition came from. On the other hand, US universities also like their sports teams and mascots etc. so maybe uniformity is the guiding principle. But what's annoying about this particular requirement (apart from producing a terribly ugly TOC) is that it shows an utter misunderstanding of the relationship between formatting and document structure (not surprising, of course, given that they really only have ever used Word.)

@AlanMunn Indeed: different areas will require different structures for a start

@JosephWright Yes, this is the first time I've encountered this kind of dissertation, (at least in the contact I get with students about the class). I know it's quite common especially in the natural sciences, but I hadn't included specific support for it in the past.
@JosephWright But it never occurred to me that they would interpret the requirement so bizarrely.

@AlanMunn Bonkers: a per-chapter bibliography is a section of that chapter ... (I prefer a single bibliography or as I'd think of it 'References and Notes')

@JosephWright Yes, absolutely bonkers.
@JosephWright I think in fields where it's common to "staple together" a set of published articles into a dissertation with a introductory chapter added, per chapter bibliographies are the norm.

7:03 PM
@AlanMunn Quite possibly: out of my area of expertese

@JosephWright In linguistics, it's not so common, since our journal reviews are glacially slow. :(

@AlanMunn For chemistry, you have the business that papers are multi-author and that quite a lot of thesis data is never published

@JosephWright That's interesting, because it wouldn't have surprised me if this was done in chemistry.
@JosephWright Ah, ok. That makes sense. Yes, I don't quite know how that's dealt with.

@AlanMunn Wouldn't really make a story, like I say you have the entire business about actual authorship, ... (most supervisors would I think expect that they write the papers, or at least heavily alter drafts from students)

@DavidCarlisle Done ...

7:51 PM
My tour brought me in Switzerland. :-)

@UlrikeFischer two:(
:-)

@DavidCarlisle Oh. How did I managed this?

@UlrikeFischer these newfangled web forms, it's not like the good old days with latex latexbug

8:14 PM
@DavidCarlisle Yes, I think I use the back button to get to the first page ;-). I guess you can delete one.

8:39 PM
@egreg I once visited Switzerland, Germany and France in 20mins on a bicycle. :)

@AlanMunn Basel?

@AlanMunn Dreiländereck ... roughly 90 km from my place here...

@egreg Exactly!

@AlanMunn You can do Italy, Austria and Switzerland around Passo Resia/Reschenpass: en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Reschen_Pass
Or Italy, Austria and Slovenia around Tarvisio; I did it a few times.

@egreg You can take a ferry from Newfoundland to France. :) en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Saint_Pierre_and_Miquelon

8:57 PM
@AlanMunn And you have to buy Euros.
