2:01 PM
Got it! (I think)
G+LOSS+ OVER (Def-Cover-up)

That last one looks useful -- and I can use it out of the box, since it uses an augmented regexp syntax.

That's correct!
Regex syntax always annoys me. There are so many slightly different variants, and it seems to me like there are a lot of inconsistencies in how things are interpreted. Maybe it's just me though.

@Sid Ok I'll keep in mind that indirect anagrams should be avoided.

Stick to one then

@Deusovi look up Expresso for regex, it pretty handy

2:04 PM
I was told I had to "mix up" types of clues, but not these I guess ^^

Sid
The rest of it were fine, though. I particularly liked 10A

@Deusovi No, it's not just you. The variants are annoying. Do I have to escape that character or not? They are still useful as a quick expression syntax.

@JanDvorak I can't, because every time I use regexes seems to be in a different context D:
@MOehm Yeah, escaping characters is the main thing I was referring to. Sometimes you have to escape them, sometimes not, sometimes only inside parentheses, sometimes ^ is a start-of-text marker, sometimes it's a negation, sometimes it's the literal ^...

It depend heavily on the context of the regex
Are you doing a single line or a paragraph, etc

Always escape then

2:09 PM
The different uses of the caret doesn't bother me. I think its use is clear from the context. (And regexps are meant to be written, not to be read.)

I would argue that all code should be written with the thought that it may need to be read, understood, and modified

@MOehm True, but being to read them makes writing them much easier.

Sid
Eh, I need to go now. So, here's the C4:
CCCC: Biologist's dish has endless work for pleasant smell (9)

lol that surface

General rule of thumb for most regex flavours is if it's not a symbol with meaning, it probably doesn't need to be escaped (and inside character classes, only ^-]\ need to be escaped, although depending on where you put the first three you can bypass that too)

2:11 PM
PETRI+CHOR(-e)

^ no idea what that is

the smell of rain after a dry period

O_O
Please don't ever defend that word in Contact

oh. well ok.

Summer storms draw blood from stone (9)

2:12 PM
ah, wasn't aware that had a name

@JanDvorak makes note to defend that word in Contact

@JanDvorak why?

makes note that word will be defended soon

@Sconibulus Is that also supposed to be PETRICHOR? I don't think it quite works cryptically, but that is where the word comes from

makes note that @Deusovi is very susceptible to reverse psychology

2:14 PM
it doesn't work?

oh, nice

what's the definition? "blood from stone"?

Speaking of Contact, I feel sorry for the awkward words that'll never be defended due to awkward prefixes

like what? dictionary or something like that?

if that's wordplay, then "petr-" means "stone", but it's not a synonym or anything - it's just part of a word
and petrichor is the smell, not the rain itself - "summer storms" isn't really a def

2:15 PM
summer storm's draw and blood from stone were supposed to be double defs

ah, then you're missing an apostrophe
and I'm not sure if "draw" can be a noun

-1
Q: Deriving formulae?

Mea Culpa NayExpress 203 as a sum of four terms which are in a Geometric Progression. Then what is the common ratio ? Hence, there by arrive at a common formula for deriving four numbers which are in a G.P.

@Sp3000 I try to defend words with misleading prefixes whenever possible

Oh, I thought punctuation was optional

nope - punctuation can be added between words, but not removed or added within words

2:16 PM
@Deusovi I'm thinking more "Sp3000 defending: T C" sort of awkward :P

that'd be a fun round

Right! I've reworked some of my clues, try this on for size:
Apega like device fears hidden element, creates wolves home. (4,6)

iron maiden?

@Deusovi In the context of "The carnival had a trapeze act. It was quite the draw." it can be, but it'd make for a slightly weird def in this case

creates->mai?

2:20 PM
@Thrax Winner winner. Too easy?

no I can't figure how to reach the answer
only (4,6) helped me
and the def for "Aplega like device"

yeah, where does "mai" come from?
oh, "made den"?

oh

you need a homophone indicator for that

@Deusovi A bit too far out?

2:21 PM
Also "made" is past tense but "creates" isn't

also, "fears hidden" doesn't seem to be used - unless you mean [FE]ars, and synonymizing wordplay isn't something you can do

@Sp3000 created would be better then. Still better than my last attempt lol

@BreakingMyself you need to indicate any transformations - taking a homophone is a transformation

Fears hidden element, Fe is Iron.

Hmmm a bit too indirect there IMO, also there's argon in there

2:24 PM
But "fears hidden" doesn't mean "hidden in fears".

@Deusovi Just reading that part in your guide now, I'm sure I can tweak this.

Yeah, that too.
There's also fluorine and sulfur.

according to earlier, it'd have to be fear's
it's ok to have multiple possibilities only one of which works, isn't it?

And it would indeed need to be "fear's hidden element".

I think there's just something weird about a 2-letter hidden within a word that gets expanded out... a little too many steps at once considering there's still more wordplay to go

2:25 PM
That would actually work, because it can also mean "fear has hidden"

@Sconibulus Yes, but expanding things out isn't

(But it's a bad idea overall.)

@MOehm no, I think "fear's hidden element" is meant to be "the hidden element of fear"

Got them, thanks.

2:27 PM
Does anyone have any good ideas on what happens next in BG's maze?

Oh, has progress been made on that? Lemme take a look.

there might be a cryptic, but probably not

It's a palindrome.
PATHSAWENOWTIMES SEMITWONEWASHTAP

So it is...
There and back again...
he went to Erebor?

?

2:35 PM
hmm, looking for a sentence hidden backwards in the earlier bits isn't proving fruitful
the final answer has ten letters, and represents in some way how to get to the guy? I figure I'm probably looking for something like 'directions' or 'university'
Mortician's would be oddly fitting :)

I might quit while I'm (far behind) ahead lol. Any better?:
Michael's ride that is childish feline slang. (6)

2:51 PM
Just to confirm @Deusovi, of course PARSIMONY was correct. DO and T are both very standard and I'm not sure why @MOehm thought I wouldn't use them :-).

What kind of knowledge does "Michael's ride" requires? Movies/Song?

@Thrax I guess tv/movies, pretty general knowledge.

Kitten ? KIT ("michael kinght's ride") + TEN?

Where does the ten come from?

no idea

2:54 PM
@GarethMcCaughan I'm not sure why either.

@Thrax Very close. Kitt is Michael Knights 'ride' (I figured ride itself was a hint for that as in Knight RIDEr).
Kitten is wrong, close though.

Kitty?

kittie
that is, ie

oh nice

only other cat word I can think of offhand. I have never seen kitty spelled ie

2:55 PM
works much better

@Sconibulus Bingo. Yes IE was the other clue

nor have I, but that was clearly it

I was keeping with the band theme

@Sconibulus ...PALINDROME?

@BreakingMyself From what?

2:57 PM
how would PALINDROME help you find someone?

we're looking for a password of some sort, no?

The final answer has letters ten,
use it find me and see you then

@dcfyj 'that is'

ah

"Can you help me find the password?"
the big question
I'd assume that the password is PALINDROME

2:59 PM
oh... that seems somehow anticlimactic

yeah...

@dcfyj I knew it would be hard translating band names into proper clues, I had to scrap Nekrogoblikon right off the list lol.

It would've been a bit rough, but you could've clued it

most things are bands if you look hard enough

@dcfyj Not with an actual definition, unless I put 'Californian goblin metal...' in there somewhere lol.

3:03 PM
in Contact, 21 secs ago, by GentlePurpleRain
Defending: U

@BreakingMyself It's a band, so you should be able to define it somehow.

@dcfyj Less obviously than that?

shrug I've never heard of them, so I couldn't say

necronomicon is a collection of the names of the dead, right? so necrogoblicon should be a collection of the goblins of the dead?

3:07 PM
@BreakingMyself I'll stick to my classical (yes I did listen to the link you sent)

3:17 PM
brb

@dcfyj Wouldn't it be boring if we all enjoyed the same music? I do like a grand orchestral piece though: youtube.com/watch?v=9rJXnShWBwQ
@Sconibulus So it can be done lol

I'm not insanely picky about what I like usually. I just didn't like that song, this one however is pretty good.
@BreakingMyself This one will probably always hold a place in my heart though

@dcfyj That Korg probably cost more than everything I own lmao. I don't think we've had a bad FF soundtrack ever.

korg?

@dcfyj The keyboard.

3:25 PM
ah

Korg is a brand, sorry lol

While I played percussion in high school/college I no longer do lol
Didn't realize the Black Mage version had electric guitar though, not my favorite rendition of this song.

I dabble in a few things, mainly bass but I have an interest in all things musical really. The main riff from Hysteria by Muse is the extent of my abilities, not quite at Master of Puppets or Peace Sells level yet.

lol

Q: Think not in integers?

Mea Culpa NayEasier again: Make 24 using only the digits 1, 4, 5 and 6, with the following conditions: They should not be clubbed /joined (to form such as 64 or 51 etc.) Only the basic arithmetic operations (+, -, * and /) are allowed to be performed. @Forklift GOOD IS CORRECT FOR COMPLETING MY TASK

@BreakingMyself ???

3:55 PM
puzzling.stackexchange.com/questions/623/… This one was well recieved tho...

@Deusovi Sarcasm relating to the simple questions being asked, not that mine are any better.

I guess it should be a dupe

@bleh and appears to be a dupe
@BreakingMyself good point. I hadn't thought of it that way.
I'm not saying I don't appreciate the effort to add interesting content. just that there doesn;t appear to be effort to understand what makes content interesting or what people aren't interested in.
not that I am content police, but that user seems to be especially high volume, low reception.

puzzling.stackexchange.com/questions/47267/… I don't really get what made this so high quality :P
low effort, but quite well recieved somehow

I'm not sure either. I wouldn't consider it high quality, to be honest.

Sid
4:01 PM
@Deusovi Correct as you already know.

Oh right, I have to post a cryptic clue

Sid
@bleh Right, bleh. You are here. What was the answer to that youtube question?

hm

CCCC: Key axed: done without (8)

well, lemme look at it for a sec to remember the clued

4:04 PM
@bleh It presented a math problem in an interesting and novel way. Plus, painted a funny picture as people read it. I would upvote that. it's amusing and looks like fun.

I wouldn't consider that a math problem.

Sid
Eh, the archive is way behind. You need to update it.

I'll do that tonight.

Sid
@bleh I upvoted it when I saw it because it was simple yet elegant. I liked that.

Honestly, it seems too broad to me. It could just be an arithmetic sequence for instance - add 128 to the previous person's number
plus, "security guard" questions always annoy me. there were dozens of them on this site

4:07 PM
BRB, off to make a security guard puzzle

Just search "security to the party" and look at all of them.

dear lord, what the heck

esc+hewed?

yup
@Forklift I told you.

Sid
What on earth... 47 posts? :o
"conspiracy edition" - Lol

4:12 PM
Well, watch out for 48 coming soon!

alright im backlol
youtube.com/watch?v=DEior-0inxU Was the youtube link
cipher was overpowered

?

vermeer + op means murderer is me

I don't understand either of your past two messages.

Sid
duh, we thought it was a rickroll link. Because random youtube links always tend to be rickrolls

4:20 PM
kartisanship is this a prank
but its not a prank

Wow, I'm glad I happened to pop in just now. I've had that puzzle up to look more closely at it since it's been posted.
Can you post a self-answer with detailed explanations? Even with the YT link provided I still don't get all of the clues on the imgur.

so its a reverse viginere, and if you viginere thisisaprank on the ciphertext, you get overpowered
oh the cipher clues?
One of fivehundred- Capital c for roman numeral
Right below number one, is capital D

I figured on a couple being Roman numerals, but others didn't make much sense as characters.

what sees- the eye, or i,
what is oneself, I
the gaping hole is an o

Sid
How is 500=C? It is D.

4:28 PM
C = 500 on a big day. Remember what happened to 2 once?

There are 11 characters but only 10 lines.....

^ still reading back and around to figure that out, if lucky. Signed, Lucky.
... but, also, if nobody solves Springtime before winter i'll just show my impatience here ...
... it's the easiest puzzle ever ...

Sid
@humn You could give a hint

I'm sure I'm missing something obvious.
Humn has given multiple hints here in chat

And in post.

4:42 PM
Giving hints in chat is unfair to those who don't read chat

Truly!
The worst trespass, in my opinion, though understandable when it happens, is to cite chatstrips in open posts.
@ffao , i'd like to race you in person just for the pleasure of losing. (Don't worry, i don't seek out anyone in person except complete strangers.)

I don't think I have ever won a race, you're fine

You're a wonder at full steam. Just cheering you on.

Sid
4:59 PM
Oh, @ffao you owe us a 4C

Can't write a 4C while playing contact and walking to work :/
Wish I could

... along the way, just found another superb performance. This singer knows how to anger the edges before retracting her claws:
(Most singers don't know how to stop once they get there.)
(she even shows what's up with hand gestures!)
(If i'm a musical stalker, it's of that particular piece. Trapped countless others, but for some reason this one keeps showing up on the horizon. I love the way its various performers turn robotics into humoueieior while given a score and a half to sing.)

Sid
5:17 PM
@Thrax Also, What did Revolutionary do in that clue of SALSA?

turned SLA to SAL I think

Or turned (S + L + A + AS) into SALSA.

Sid
Oh, right twice anagram. Somehow, I saw that as anagram only once with Introduced

I think "initially introduced" tells us to take the first letters of Service Level Agreement.

Sid
I think that was only with initially
introduced is perhaps anagramming As to Sa

5:22 PM
Yes, it's super-redundant, because a service level agreement is apparently already known as SLA.

Sid
Bah, Gareth. I was just writing a cool answer to that new puzzle with diagrams and all. And you marked it as duplicate. mutter

0
Q: A real life riddle

thecoder16Suppose you are in a boat on a pond and you are holding a small 10 lb weight. You drop the weight into the water. Does the water level rise, stay the same, or lower?

Really, Gareth, answering and then marking as a duplicate?

Following your lead, D!

Sid
@Deusovi So, you did get the Spring puzzle. Bah, should have gotten that..

5:33 PM
But you didn't! Relax!

I don't recall ever doing that after getting the modhammer. (I may have done it when I was unsure whether it was a duplicate, and my vote was more of a question to the other close voters than a confident statement of duplicate-ness.) I could definitely be mistaken though.
@Sid I had suspected that was the trick for a while, but it seemed a bit tedious to actually do. Eventually I separated the string character-by-character into a spreadsheet (automatically of course), transposed it, concatenated each row and removed spaces, separated that out, and transposed again.

That's why everyone needs a programmable editor

I want to learn vim and/or emacs at some point. Never got around to it though.

Take your time, i did and was worth it.
Hated it at first.

You seem like you take your time with everything (and I mean that in the best possible way).

5:40 PM
Taken in the best way, thank you for that. And thank you for solving Springtime!
You've solved my most difficult puzzles in a blink, D, but that one felt like years.

I'm not sure why that took so long. Like I said, I had suspected that was the solution for a while - I expected someone else (with more programming experience) would do it at some point.

Q: Sequence Of Numbers

ErikI am trying to solve this sequence of numbers to find out what 4 numbers come next. $5,23,45,73$ This came from a forum I read a while back, and I'm not able to figure it out. Any help is highly appreciated.

... liner note ... Emacs was designed by people who knew what they were doing but didn't know how to present it ...

I can't tell whether that means you prefer emacs or vim. I've heard that it's a contentious topic online.

I'm a huge fan of Emacs by now, and get out of the way of vim hackers.
The best editor ever was SOS.

5:48 PM
@Sid @Deusovi I answered it. Then it occurred to me that the problem was such a chestnut it must surely have appeared before. Then I checked and lo, it had, very clear-cut. It would indeed have been better to have those thoughts in the other order :-).

Fair enough!

It was named "Son of Stopgap"

Wow, a 343-page editor manual.

And the original Stopgap was a desperate measure to begin with.

Sid
5:49 PM
duh, I really spent some time on doing that diagram. A full 3 minutes.

@Deusovi , o h you did!
The typeface alone brings back such memories.
"Please read the preface before reading the rest of the manual." And it's followed by a blank page.
Now you know where i spawned.

The time spent on editing is short enough that I think the iota of time you gain from learning vim is not really worth the effort

Depends on what you do for a living, no?
(and for fun)

If i could edit that i would. Just for fun!

I do a decent amount of editing for puzzles, if nothing else.
Plus, I've heard they work well with LaTeX.

6:04 PM
Yeah, there's a divergence between character-interpreted print and WYSI(s)WYG production.

HEy

manshyou!

Howz it goin?

I wish SE had full LaTeX syntax instead of Markdown. Sure, typing \textbf might be a bit difficult for new users, but it gives you much more control over what you're trying to say.

but I don't want to text my non-existent boyfriend!

6:08 PM
(And I don't like how different regular text and MathJaX look - the difference is jarring.)

Just like why learn a program of the addition of two number when I can do it in my head? So that you can make even better programs.

I once knew a programming language to its core. Resented every other.
Then realized it's just one programming language after another and hopped on for the ride.

@manshu I wrote a program to find all the prime number under (i think it was) 1,000,000 before, just because I could :)

Talking about programming (which I shamelessly started), I want to use linux on my PC using VM Ware. I want to devote 1GB RAM (coz I have only 2GB). Which linux distro should I use? Any idea will be appreciated.
In other words, which linux distro runs smooth in 1GB RAM. I will be using it for the first time. So not expecting something hardcore.

(from the sidelines: I sneered at linux when it came out, now i cheer.)

6:16 PM
I like markdown. Typing ** is a lot easier than \textbf
I'm not afraid to give up a bit of control if it makes my life easier

I want to learn the commands and other things in it. Last time I installed Ubantu, it was good but it was slowwwww.

Linux users might disagree with my last statement

Yeah, I can understand that. I guess it's just the font inconsistency that bothers me most.

Markdown is a wild and crazy relief for some of us.

CCCC: Wingless monster stops searches for gems (8)

6:19 PM
After i post a couple of puzzles based on the lack of knowledge i'll post one or two based on sloppiness. Whoops, that already happened. Hope nobody noticed.

Sid
@dcfyj I did that till 1000 actually once because I was bored. :P

Sorry I was wrong, it wasn't 1,000,000 it was 1,000,000,000

@dcfyj must have taken a lot of time then?

Sid
Good luck running that program. It should slow down your computer quite a bit..

I've already run it, as I recall it didn't take super long
It did however generate 100 files

6:25 PM
Minotaur!

Ole'!

Sid
mods, pin the new C4, please

I would post the code but I can't find it. I made have deleted it after I ran it.
It was a rather short program though

$\textbf{hello}$

in which language though?

6:28 PM
it generated 100 files?

works!

Sid
I wrote one in Blue Java but that was years back.

Java have colors?

Sid
Arrgh, BlueJ
this thing: bluej.org

Thanks

Sid
6:33 PM
I might have written in C++ too, I think.

... keep thinking ...

The way I chat here is totally different than the way I chat at other places. Probably I'm the only one.

You're the only one who is different, manshuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuu!

It's not like that. Just because I am from Mars doesn't mean that I am different. Sometimes I look like Earthlings too and sometimes I speak Earthlish.

On alternate days, others understand.

6:39 PM
Sometimes I can't figure out which language am I speaking. Par kabhi kabhi pata lag bhi jata hai.

Sid
@manshu How different are Martians from Earthlings?
:P

Martians have two noses. They inhale from one and exhale from another.

That's almost biologically impossible without congestion.

Two mouths. One on the head and one on the back. Though the mouth on the back doesn't speak much other than the occasional 'phew'.

Sid
@manshu Oh, here, we call them nostrils just that both function for both inhalation and exhalation

6:42 PM
They have a filter that they remove and clean after every meal

Two noses sounds far more effective.

I sniff around for clues.

Sid
@manshu visualises Voldemort

Two noses is THE dream.

That's IT, i'm changing names to THE.

6:45 PM
I forgot to mention that the mouth on the back is far below the mouth on the head.
to the what?

Although the lungs would have to be able to redirect any debris to the outflow

[for another time, nice one, feelinetc]

inhale, exchange the gases in the lungs, exhale through the exhaling nose.
easier than that of Earthlings.

Sid
Also, are they all bald-headed like you @Manshu ?
(that's what your gravatar shows, btw. :P)

"Gravatar"?! Did you just make that up?

6:48 PM
This picture is far too old. I must have been 1 or 2 years old. I was saying something like "Y U NO GIVE ME MY TOY?"
There are 5 or 6 hairs now.

They'll grow on you, one place and another.

Damn. I was growing them in the sand. Too bad nobody told me until now.

@humn Gravatar is a universal avatar. Gravatar.com

Sid
Wait, lemme show you a picture of some guy my nephew likes to watch on TV..

@MorganG , thank you. (I'm years behind my time while trying to step up.)

6:52 PM
Not Chhota Bheem?

Sid
Yes that one. ^

Not a fan of universal avatars because my display pictures on each site look vastly different based on site culture
Using Aqua would not be appropriate in a professional context, or even facebook for that matter
but here it's ok

why wouldn't it be appropriate?

Coincidently some of the Martians watch that thing too. That was the primary reason I stepped on Earth. To stop that thing from being telecasted.

Those sites want your picture to represent what you actually look like, and there is some stigma with weebs I'd rather avoid

6:54 PM
This is my fb dp for last 2 years now :p :

Sid
That is Spiderman. :P

my JIRA avatar is a cartoony-looking owl, and my facebook has me in a biplane in the background of Eowyn fighting the Witch King

That is...Tobey McGuire.

Sid
*Faceplam

It was you when me met.

6:56 PM
@Sid Facebook :p
Yes. But as I said:
22 mins ago, by manshu
The way I chat here is totally different than the way I chat at other places. Probably I'm the only one.
So I had to change the dp.

well, I haven't heard of any stigma associated with people in biplanes, so you're fine

Sid
My Facebook has ....wait, I forgot. It probably has me with that French flag(because of that terror attack, I dunno, 2 years back?)

I wouldn't submit a CV with that picture in it depending on the company though

Such English among those who learnt otherwise. What a supreme pleasure! Truly, from a half-native who wends others' words.

And I wouldn't join a company who can't differentiate between jokes and serious things.

6:59 PM
I wouldn't submit a CV with a picture in it regardless of the company! Is that something cultural though? (US here)
