@michal.h21 Yeah, but we're not typesetting 6000 copies of the same text-only xml files. Add some page breaking html tables to every 5th file and a complex narrow two-column DIN A4 format and you may notice a slight drop in performance... Seriously, we looked into LuaTeX let alone it's typographical benefits, but even relatively simple standard LaTeX (i.e. not xml) projects took almost trice as much time than normal LaTeX. And we're talking scientific journals and text books here, not novels.

2 hours later…
5:58 AM
Hi,
Whenever I use the pgfplots key `ylabel near ticks,` in combination with a multiline ylabel the compilation crahses. Any hint why it's happening?
The error message is: ! LaTeX Error: Something's wrong--perhaps a missing \item.

6:11 AM
\pgfplotsset{compat=1.3} doesn't help

6:25 AM
@StefanKottwitz you stole my line (many hours before I had the chance to coming up with it)
@DavidCarlisle nice

@s__C Some guessing: ylabel near ticks overwrites the existing style for every axis y label, and it doesn't include align=... or text width, so line breaks wont work. Try adding ylabel style={align=center} after ylabel near ticks.

ok @TorbjørnT. let me try this
Well spotted @TorbjørnT. !

6:59 AM
@DavidCarlisle pdfpages updated to remove \G@pdf@ext: do we keep it or remove (for the next release)?

7:45 AM
@DavidCarlisle Reading up on how ConTeXt handles figures ...

@JosephWright remove I'd say

@DavidCarlisle Yes, my thought to: I'll drop it but won't worry about a release until we see what else comes up ...

@JosephWright sounds good, meanwhile I suppose I'd better look how xunicode defines \t....

@DavidCarlisle I've not really been following the Ross thread: related to that?
@DavidCarlisle, @Moriambar Where are we on the \\ issue?

@JosephWright no different (reported as fontspec gh issue, but really base/TU)

7:59 AM
@DavidCarlisle Ah

@JosephWright the last renaming query is for 2013 and has ~650 entries but @Moriambar did jan/feb last night and I'm up to half way through august starting from December so we should be done by tomorrow then see anything missed when there is a clean dump on sunday morning

@DavidCarlisle Great!

@JosephWright meanwhile @Moriambar's having a day off in London:-)

@DavidCarlisle Cool
@DavidCarlisle I'll be passing through later and in London on Monday (for work ...)

@DavidCarlisle nope tomorrow. Today I'm at work, but I get off early to prepare to london. Tonight probably I can do some, despite the alarm is set at 4:20 tomorrow

8:04 AM
@Moriambar ah I thought you were travelling today:-)

@DavidCarlisle nope. My flight is tomorrow morning (early) and I will return tomorrow evening (late)

@Moriambar Goodness

@Moriambar oh really short trip!

@JosephWright I only come to London to see the National Gallery Museum (and hope to find Gal Gadot there <3). Nothing else. I can really cut down costs this way :) also, I cannot afford any days off
@DavidCarlisle just as I like them

@Moriambar Ah
@Moriambar Certainly worth a visit: I strongly recommend the Arnolfini Portrait
@Moriambar Flying to Heathrow?

8:07 AM
@JosephWright I have around 7 hours to visit as much as I can I will try to see it all, including the Michelangelo exhibition
@JosephWright Gatwick, I'll arrive with the express at victoria station and then I will travel by foot :)

@Moriambar Ah

@JosephWright thanks for the suggestion: I'll pay extra attention to it

@Moriambar come all the way to London to see a load of Italian stuff? :-)

@JosephWright total cost for the travel to london and back, 93€

@Moriambar It's my (co)favourite work of painting

8:09 AM
@DavidCarlisle Basically... (and never been to rome)
@JosephWright and the other one is...?

@Moriambar You might guess given my day job and name that I also like An Experiment on a Bird in the Air Pump
@Moriambar Ghent alterpiece by the same artist
@Moriambar Also called The Adoration of the Mystic Lamb

@JosephWright I don't know your daily job, but your name I do :)
@JosephWright nice. I'd like to see the Emmaus Supper since I've never seen a Caravaggio in real life before (yes in Italy there are plenty, have I told you I don't like to travel?)

@Moriambar I'm a chemist: nowadays a university lecturer but I tend to describe myself as a 'research scientist'

@JosephWright I see
@JosephWright anyway I'm coming to London mostly on a dare. I'm already regretting not fixing the backslashes and sleeping late

@Moriambar :)

8:12 AM
@JosephWright Last time I was there was two weeks after the metro attack at King's cross. 2005 I think
@JosephWright @DavidCarlisle Anyway if anyone of you would like to meet me tomorrow, I'll be there most of the day. Also bring Gal Gadot with you.

8:38 AM
@Moriambar sorry tied up with all day events in the village tomorrow (probably not quite as high culture as the national gallery:-)

@DavidCarlisle ok no problem :) I'm just saying I'll be there. I'll have plenty to do there anyway

8:52 AM
@DavidCarlisle you know anything about the weather? I guessyou there have the knowledge of which weather service seems less random (as we do here)

9:18 AM
@JosephWright you probably watch this anyway but github.com/wspr/fontspec/issues/294#issuecomment-308976877
@Moriambar hot:-) 28C and sunny tomorrow: bbc.co.uk/weather/2643743

@DavidCarlisle great. The important part is the absence of rain. I can manage everything else :) thanks

10:00 AM
@yo' ooh <3

yo'
@PauloCereda :)

10:46 AM
@UlrikeFischer I have a miktex related question for you. A user came by with a completely new MikTeX installation plus he is using TeXnicCenter. Apparently eventhough he explicitly stated that packages should be installed on the fly (don't ask first) we observed that running pdflatex through TC would not install all packages. We ended up running it several times though a dos prompt to have it install the missing packages.
I was wondering whether this is a known issue, or just that he did not run pdflatex enough times on his file since apparently it can only install one package per compilation. The error picked up by TC just does not mention that
this was related to a missing packages and that the user should recompile.

@daleif Wasn't there an issue with some versions of TeXniccenter and on-the-fly installation?

@daleif If it works on a prompt but not in TC then it is a texnicCenter problem (the editor has been notorius for blocking the dialog and imho it is no longer developed).

@UlrikeFischer That too: I'd forgotten it was abandon-ware
@UlrikeFischer Just did a whois on the domain texniccenter.org: expires in December ...
13
Q: How can I fix the error "GUI framework cannot be initialized" with TeXnicCenter and MiKTeX?

Zev ChonolesI don't know what I've done, but all of a sudden I am unable to compile any document which uses the geometry package. Minimal (non)-working example: \documentclass[11pt]{article} \usepackage{geometry} \begin{document} test \end{document} doesn't produce any output, and this is what I ...

@UlrikeFischer but he had the setting where it should just install without asking. So there should not be any dialogs, plus he was certain that at least some packages was installed through TC, but not all.

11:02 AM
@JosephWright and it's a very bad sign if anyone lets their domain expire....

@DavidCarlisle buy it and redirect it to the emacs website?

@daleif Well you are not saying which package weren't installed, there are few miktex wouldn't pick up (e.g. cm-super). But I just run a small test and miktex has no problems to install more than one missing packages. So I think it is highly probable that the problem is with texniccenter and can't be solved as the application is more or less dead.

@PauloCereda someone just suggested that if they change the svn pre-commit hook to normalise on tab then the company could save money and pay us all less.

@DavidCarlisle LOL I see where this is going.

@DavidCarlisle Yes, yes
@DavidCarlisle Look at how much the .com one is!

11:09 AM
@JosephWright oh 2 thousand pounds for .com or or .co.uk on special offer for 1 penny, definitely I'll take .com then

@DavidCarlisle :)
@DavidCarlisle Or just spell it properly: texniccentre.com is the usual price ;)
2

@JosephWright I see what you did there <3

@UlrikeFischer It is more weird than that. In my office we explictly saw that it installed xparse and expl3. Then he went to his own office and rebooted his computer, which is a University laptop with Win10. Then compiled the same file that we were playing with on his computer in my office. Now it installed both xparse and expl3 again!
There might be some issues with the roaming profiles vs miktex. I suggested that he looks into getting miktex to install everything (as admin) or switch to TL.
Plus he'll have a look at texmaker/texstudio instead of TC

@DavidCarlisle also, expect ArTeXmis after I finish my thesis. :)

@daleif Yes roaming profiles can be a problem. When you install miktex with a multiuser setup then there are two installation tree (for all and for user installation). At least one of them is by default in a roaming profile (I have forgotten which one, it was in some old discussion). You can change the folders at installation time. See docs.miktex.org/2.9/manual/setupwiz.html

11:19 AM
@PauloCereda people can expect all kinds of improbable and mystical events after such an unlikely event as you finishing your thesis
3

@DavidCarlisle it's like the singularity? :)

@daleif It could also be that only/also the tree with the FNDB is in a roaming profile (I really will have to recheck this ;-)).

@UlrikeFischer what would happen if he re-installed miktex and explicitly asked it to just install for himself? No multi user (he is the only user of the PC)?

@daleif On my PC I installed miktex in my user account as single user. The main tree is in D:\miktex, the two other relevant (for FNDB, fonts and config files etc) are one in user/appdata/roaming (UserConfig) and the other user/appdata/local (UserData). Probably (but I don't know your setup) it would be better to redirect at least the UserConfig tree away from roaming.

@UlrikeFischer thanks, we'll see what we end up with. Otherwise I'll just recommend he used TL17 as that might be better for our setup

11:37 AM
@daleif The main difference is that texlive has is "FNDB"-files in the respective trees and that not every tree need a ls-R-file, while miktex has them centralized. So roaming profiles needs more thinking about the setup.

@Moriambar July-December done

@DavidCarlisle nice, I wish I could do some of them during the day...

@Moriambar sort of lunch time, but I need to get back to work now:-)

@DavidCarlisle I see. I devoted mine listening to my colleague blabbing about stuff I do not care about. I wish I could've done backslashes

11:56 AM
@DavidCarlisle ooh food

@PauloCereda do ducks like food?

@Moriambar I like biscuits :)
And Pringles!

@PauloCereda I see. And cake surely?

@Moriambar ooh that too

@UlrikeFischer vvvv
\makeatletter
\def\zap@space#1 #2{%

  \ifx#2\@empty\expandafter\@gobble\else\expandafter\zap@space\fi
  {#2}}

\documentclass[zzz, a4paper]{minimal}

\show\@classoptionslist
\begin{document}

\end{document}

11:58 AM
@DavidCarlisle The return of zzz <3

@PauloCereda :)

@UlrikeFischer that's fixable but would require rather more invasive changes, I think just saving the raw option argument for a package to handle would be safer
@PauloCereda that's harmless, it's the space after it that kills the above code

@DavidCarlisle oh
I finally decided to give tmux a try and it's quite good! :)

@PauloCereda compare the above with and without the space before a4paper
@PauloCereda tmux?

@DavidCarlisle I get {a}4paper with the space one.
@DavidCarlisle the terminal multiplexer thingy. :)

12:02 PM
@PauloCereda which doesn't set a paper size...

@DavidCarlisle yes!
ooh someone new appeared
@VicLineal: Hello, welcome!

@PauloCereda I wasn't welcomed this way the first time I popped up. I feel sad :(

@Moriambar not my fault!

@PauloCereda you were there

@Moriambar: welcome to the chatroom, enjoy the biscuits!

12:04 PM
@Moriambar at least they were not actively rude to you from the start

@PauloCereda thanks

@Moriambar David has a good point. :)
@Moriambar: you see, I probably was here, but I was focused on writing a certain document, so I probably hadn't noticed you arriving. :)

@DavidCarlisle yes of course. you're all very polite. I hope that for tomorrow too (it's not always the case in Italy)
@PauloCereda that's a weak excuse :D

@Moriambar that's my only excuse and the lie I am living up to. :)

@PauloCereda fair enough

12:07 PM
ooh a newcomer, hello @ChristianHupfer. :)
^^ see how friendly we are

@PauloCereda I see. Indeed I was welcomed by "don't ask if you can ask, just ask" it was the pineapple pizza later that I'm complaining about

@Moriambar ooh that's @DavidCarlisle
@DavidCarlisle will you get M an Xbox One X?

@PauloCereda I'm not sure about the first part, the second one of course.

@PauloCereda Which newcomer? I am no newcomer ... I am an old bloke

Pineapple pizza and a Marmite carbonara. :)
@ChristianHupfer ooh <3

12:13 PM
@PauloCereda Naughty duck ;-)

@PauloCereda dear lord

@ChristianHupfer quack!
@Moriambar :)

@PauloCereda no

@DavidCarlisle How about a Nintendo Switch?

@PauloCereda Ugh!

12:19 PM
@CarLaTeX and a spaghetti-cutting knife! :)

@PauloCereda I'm more against the spoon with the spaghetti, I find it disgusting.

@PauloCereda no

@Moriambar Oh my, people use sppon?!

@PauloCereda: You've got mail

@DavidCarlisle and a brand new Playstation 4 Pro?

12:20 PM
@PauloCereda no

@PauloCereda I saw a lot of tourists that do that (without knowing they make us laugh)

@PauloCereda see what generous parents we are?

@ChristianHupfer Thanks, replying it!

@PauloCereda they unfortunately do, especially they rotate the fork in it

@Moriambar @PauloCereda: It's time for the restaurant sketch, isn't it? ;-) (I mean the one with the fork ;-))

12:28 PM
@ChristianHupfer I smell monty python, or am I mistaken?

@Moriambar Yes, the flowery scent of Monty Python :D

@ChristianHupfer -.- I understand. It's best to stop chatting and time to work

@Moriambar Don't be silly !

@ChristianHupfer :)
@Moriambar At home, it is strictly forbidden to cut spaghetti. I grew up learning the fine art of eating pasta. :)

@PauloCereda thank god. It should be forbidden, but also using the spoon should

12:38 PM
@Moriambar Spoon is really news to me, I never saw such barbaric act!

@PauloCereda they do it mostly in the south. The first time I saw that barbaric act I was 24

@Moriambar oh my

@DavidCarlisle Ups.

12:57 PM
@UlrikeFischer first rule of latex maintenance: any change breaks something:-)
5

1:30 PM
@UlrikeFischer: I need you! My video is ready!

@PauloCereda what should I do

@UlrikeFischer Where do I click? :) Dream upload?

@PauloCereda YES.

@UlrikeFischer: Video Beschreibung

@PauloCereda The text says also that you should use a hashtag #unsertraum2024 but I don't know what it means ;-(
@PauloCereda Write something in english ...

1:40 PM
@UlrikeFischer Where should I post the hashtag?

@PauloCereda No idea ;-). Put it in the description. If it doesn't work or is incomprehensible it would be good to know. Make screenshots, then my husband can complain ...

@UlrikeFischer ^^ :)

@PauloCereda Looks ok (not sure about the hashtag thing imho the description should be improved here).

@UlrikeFischer More text?

@DavidCarlisle and @Moriambar -- i thought you guys said you were done. this one is still unfixed: tex.stackexchange.com/a/108694/579

1:51 PM
@PauloCereda My husband says you should add your city/country after your last name. Can you sent it to my also directly?
@PauloCereda Text is fine!

@UlrikeFischer Should I send or would you like to do the honour? It's a 6MB file.

@PauloCereda What does "do the honour" mean here?

@barbarabeeton nope, we did the old query and working through 2013 with the new one. I did a couple of months, while @DavidCarlisle did many

@UlrikeFischer Would you like to send it for me, so your husband can proofread everything?
I am a bit afraid of the German text. :)

@PauloCereda I trust you ;-) But I'm curious.

1:56 PM
@UlrikeFischer ooh :)
@UlrikeFischer Check your email. :)

@PauloCereda GREAT!!!

@UlrikeFischer I tried being serious for once. :)

@PauloCereda but with a duck!

@UlrikeFischer YES :D

@Moriambar -- okay, thanks for explanation.

2:06 PM
Breaking news: my secret plan for TUG 2018 now took a complete turn and it might work! There are at least 60 people involved!
2

user289533
@PauloCereda Hey!! Thanks for the welcom!

@barbarabeeton no we are working towards each other, currently done jan and feb and december-july, so april is in the gap :-)

@DavidCarlisle -- well, i'll keep checking. what year(s) do you think you've finished? (yes, i know you've waiting for a new database load on sunday.)

2:28 PM
@barbarabeeton everything except march-jun 2013

2:57 PM
@barbarabeeton I just did June

@DavidCarlisle I'll probably be able to grind march and april in around an hour. Possibly May later.

3:40 PM
@DavidCarlisle starting now with march. Let's see where I can go :)

@Moriambar ok we have something on this evening but I can probably do a month late tonight if you don't reach june

4:11 PM
@DavidCarlisle great. I hope to be able to sleep early… anyway I'm attacking april, and my brilliant plans for tomorrow (=simply go and hope) took a little less than expected, so this looks promising

4:24 PM
@Moriambar OK have a good trip, and welcome to the UK :-)

@DavidCarlisle will I be welcome to UK too?

4:39 PM
This is the best site ever.

@DavidCarlisle thanks, I hope it will be good to be back there. Anyway I've done May. Later I plan on june and I'll keep you posted

@PauloCereda The upload worked fine, we got a feed back.

@UlrikeFischer Really? ooh you are in the committee?

@PauloCereda No but my husband is the one responsable in the city administration.

@UlrikeFischer ooh that's great news! Did he enjoy the video?

5:01 PM
@PauloCereda Yes very much. I did show it to him directly.

@UlrikeFischer awww I am very happy you two enjoyed it!
@UlrikeFischer: easter egg: my cat Ciça was sitting on my lap during the recording. :)

Does anyone know how to make everything in the contents lists to be set \raggedright in memoir. I thought that \setrmarg{3.55em plus1fil} was supposed to do it, but it's certainly not having any effect on the LoF, LoT. etc.

@PauloCereda I finished translating the arara localization file into Dutch
what should I do with the file now?

5:18 PM
@Marijn Really? That's awesome, thank you! <3
@Marijn You have two options: pull request and I merge the file into the default repository or you can send me the file. :)

sending the file sounds easiest :)

@Marijn Be my guest. :)

it's sent

@Marijn It's replied. :)

@PauloCereda do you need any other languages doing? (I could do several)

5:28 PM

@DavidCarlisle ooh :)

@PauloCereda glad it works :)

@Marijn Thank you very much, my friend! I will acknowledge your hard work in the manual, and the Dutch users of arara will be grateful for your effort. :)

5:43 PM
@PauloCereda You should add the disclaimer “no duck has been harmed during development of this piece of software”
2
@PauloCereda “except for one who had to delay his thesis in order to write version 4 of arara”
4

@egreg ooh I like this idea. :)

@DavidCarlisle @barbarabeeton Ok everything is done. By this I don't mean that all the posts are correct, but that basically there's no point in refining the query further. In the next dump, if I did well with the queries, I expect ≤150 posts (slips, and such). Otherwise we should anyway get ≤1000 I would think

6:22 PM
@DavidCarlisle Did you translate this from some other language? It's completely ungrammatical for me.
@egreg I'm still not clear why it wasn't just called pato in the first place.

6:47 PM
@PauloCereda Congratulations!
@JosephWright @DavidCarlisle Updated Date: 2017-02-18 so the domain is not inactive. I'm sure it's automatically renewed.

@StefanKottwitz Thanks! :)
"Dear young person, if you are a geek, the world needs you, and you will never run out of opportunities to apply your talents."-Donald Knuth

7:14 PM
@PauloCereda -- interesting. attributed to dek, but with picture of grace hopper.

@barbarabeeton Oh the Twitter account (Code Wisdom) has the photo of Grace Hopper. So they are not related.

@PauloCereda well… I beg to differ :)

@Moriambar I am a geek and it's not working so far. :D

@PauloCereda Been a geek all of my life. I never ran "in" of opportunities, so in one sense I never ran out too. Also DEK is a genius and talks about geniuses perhaps.

@Moriambar I am an average duck. Probably slightly under average, actually. I am stupid most of the time. :)

7:25 PM
@PauloCereda don't know about that. You seem pretty normal here, so I wouldn't call you "under average"
But it was geeks we were talking about, and you seem like one. For once you have a strong opinion in the emacs or vi matter

@Moriambar aw thank you
@Moriambar I also don't like pineapple pizza
2

@PauloCereda that's a huge bonus.

7:40 PM
@Moriambar He's lying. After all he lives in the land of the 'sweet' pizza.

@AlanMunn well I see… he'll have to report on that… in due time! I'm gonna get up in 6 hours, better try and catch some sleep

@Moriambar Have a good trip!

@AlanMunn thanks. I'll hope I'll forget about the \\ s and learn again to be useless here :D

@Moriambar Your work is very much appreciated!
2

@AlanMunn thanks, but don't worry: I'll be back to "useless newbie" in a flash. :)

7:47 PM
@AlanMunn I once ate a chocolate pizza, that's true. :)
2

@PauloCereda I rest my case. Starred for (short-term) posterity.

Sweet pizzas are not pizzas

@AlanMunn Hey, I don't judge, I eat. :)

so long!

Apr 8 at 21:54, by Alan Munn
@Moriambar So explain this: :P Focaccia di pasta di pane condita con pomodoro, olio, origano, acciughe, mozzarella e infiniti altri ingredienti a piacere, cotta al forno , especially the phrase 'infiniti altri ingrediente a piacere' :)

7:51 PM
The food was free, so I don't care if it's called pizza, fondue or ratatouille. :)

@AlanMunn Infiniti, non dolci

@CarLaTeX Can you put gorgonzola on a pizza?

@AlanMunn Of course, but it's a cheese, not a sweet

@CarLaTeX So you can also put gorgonzola dolce. :D

@CarLaTeX -- lahmajun isn't pizza, but it's related. would you consider it either edible or enjoyable?

7:54 PM
@AlanMunn Gorgonzola dolce is a cheese not a sweet

@CarLaTeX I know. I was just setting you up for that.

@AlanMunn I know you know :P

@CarLaTeX And nothing in the definition I gave excludes sweet. The crucial point is a piacere. :)

@AlanMunn There's no hope

@CarLaTeX I didn't realize you Italians were all platonists. :) (Well. actually, I'm very well aware of it...)

@AlanMunn: you sir are a skillful semioticist. :)

@CarLaTeX Now that's disgusting. Marie Antoinette's head is rolling in its grave.

@AlanMunn There's no hope

@CarLaTeX Now you're repeating yourself. :)

@AlanMunn I know

8:06 PM
@CarLaTeX Well today for lunch I had noodles, but not pasta. Bún thịt nướng to be exact.

@AlanMunn Can you distinguish spaghetti from noodles? So you're far ahead of @DavidCarlisle!

@CarLaTeX I only pretend to be a philistine to annoy you all. Although my tastes in food, as with music, are quite catholic.

@DavidCarlisle -- please take a look at this: tex.stackexchange.com/q/124708 -- i think that a couple of "lonesome slashes" weren't fixed. the text refers to "vertical spacing between equations", and the present code (even though modified by the script) doesn't produce that. does the position of the "lonesome slash" at the beginning of a line make a difference?

@AlanMunn That makes me happy :)

@AlanMunn :D

@PauloCereda WTH?

@AlanMunn it's a... very alternative comic strip. :)
@Johannes_B ^^ a duck visiting penguins

@PauloCereda This strip reminds me of a duck joke: What's the difference between a duck?
@PauloCereda One leg is green, the other leg is also yellow.

@AlanMunn OH MY

8:44 PM
@PauloCereda Did you get my mail?

9:00 PM
@Moriambar yeh, thanks a lot, have a good trip
@barbarabeeton don't think so, that one come up in the script and gets fixed by the emacs lisp, these things happen if you fix thousands of them at a few seconds each, they odd thig gets missed:-)
@CarLaTeX I can distinguish the real thing from European copies, and I'm sure @AlanMunn can too!

@DavidCarlisle :P

A bug in hhline? Oh, certainly not!
2
2
Q: Conflict babel-spanish vs hhline?

BernardSolving recently a problem with coloured table and hhline, I found that, as the babel-spanish module makes > and < active characters, using codes such as \hhline{>{\arrayrulecolor{some colour}}--} doesn't work: the line remains black. A workaround consists in inactivating these characters with...

@egreg not working with random active characters is definitely a design feature not a bug
