I wholeheartedly agree with Rubio's assessment of the helpfulness of that hint

Sid
5:33 AM
... That is not a hint. Enigmatic puzzle is always meant to be something else.

In other news, the next few days in the UK are going to be an utter political sh!tstorm.

Sid
Yeah. I was following the election. May's gamble backfired badly
And that was a pretty decent turnout as well. 70% turnout isn't common, I think.

However, since the DUP have apparently thrown their support to the Conservatives, every last seat still counts.
If the Tories can get at least half of the remaining 9 (out of 650) seats, they can still form a coalition with an extremely slim majority.

Sid
Coalition governments are bad. In any case, May was looking for a greater majority. She has got a coalition government for her troubles.
Projections say Conservatives to get 317 seats and Labour to get 263. Add DUP to it, Conservatives get a wafer thin majority of 327.
So.. In all probability, you guys have to go out and vote again within the next 2-3 years.

Pffft. Won't THAT be fun.
Or the next 2-3 weeks, actually.
in The Bridge, 2 hours ago, by Tim Stone
@Unionhawk There could be an immediate call for a vote of no confidence in the minority government, which if it succeeds, requires the minority government to gain confidence within 14 days or another general election is held

Sid
5:49 AM
That is exactly why people hate coalition government. Instability.

Oh for goodness sake. The EU negotiations are supposed to start on 19 June - exactly the same day as the Queen's Speech, which AFAICT is the first testing ground for whichever party is going to make the first bid for government.

sorry for my ignorance, but what is "first bid for government" supposed to mean?
I'm used to whoever wins the election being automatically the governing party

@Sid I don't know. If anything, people associate coalitions with slow progress, not instability, because there's always a consensus to be made. Here in Germany, we haven't had a non-coalition government for ages. (But, of course, the political system and the election mode are different from the UK's.)

@ffao In this case, nobody has won the election. It's a hung parliament.

@ffao In a multi-party parliament, the party that holds the most seats can negotiate with other parties about a coalition in order to have an absolute majority when electiong the PM. If that fails, the other parties can try to form a coalition.

6:01 AM
AIUI, the Tories get the first bid for government, either because they're the incumbents or because they got the most seats, but if they can't get their proposed stuff through, then Labour gets to have a go instead.
(I'm being a bit vague here because I don't know all the details of how this stuff works.)

Sid
Well, instability directly relates to slow economic growth.

Also, stay tuned for another round of Tory Backstabbing, the panel game of the century.

Sid
@MOehm if I am not wrong, Germany is going to polls this year.

@Sid Yes, we are going to have federal elections in September.

Sid
How are they different from the election in UK?
@rand any idea exactly why this happened? Weren't people predicting a landslide for May?

6:10 AM
@Sid Corbyn was too damn good.
And May hid herself away and refused to engage with people.

Sid
Overconfidence? That never works out well..

The electoral system is based on two votes: One for your local representative and a second (more mportant) one for a "list", usually a party. For each constituency, there is one MP, usually of one of the bif two parties, but the parliament is filled with people from the list so to the share of overall votes represents the share of seats for each party.
The proportional share is to ensure that small parties are represented. The dirct vote is to ensure that there is at least one representatives from each constituency. There's a third rule, that only lists that receive at least 5% of total votes enter the parliament, which is to ensure that the parliament isn't too fragmented. (The small lists are often quite radical, either left-wing or right-wng.)
Law proposals must pass the federal parliament and the federal council, which is a body made up of representatives from each federal state.
(But enough of this. The ongoings in the UK are certainly miore interesting right now.)

Sid
@rand so, in all likelihood, May resigns? Who is the best bet for Prime Minister if Conservatives muster up a majority?

6:26 AM
@Sid Impossible to say at this stage.
23 mins ago, by Rand al'Thor
Also, stay tuned for another round of Tory Backstabbing, the panel game of the century.
^ I'm totally serious
Who knows which of them will come out on top.

The first time round, Theresa May as PM was a bit of a surprise, too, if I recall correctly.

Sid
Wow.. So, there is no clear-cut leader of the party?
Well, the PM post in Britain is cursed. Cameron resigned after 1 year. May will probably resign after one year as well

@MOehm Yeah. First Cameron got stabbed in the back by Johnson, then Johnson got stabbed in the back by Gove, then Gove got stabbed in the back by (... ? I think there was another stage in there too) May only ended up on top because her sole opponent unexpectedly dropped out once it was a two-horse race.
That's probably part of why she wanted this election: she'd never really been elected in any sense, not as PM and not even properly as leader of her party.
@Sid Cameron had already had 4 years as PM before that 1 year.

Q: How I see things in real

Jan IvanI just wanted to show you how I see my puzzle in real, because I can't see hidden message (Except that weird "I"). In fact - I don't know what you see in picture, but I see Red Panda. Do you see it too? Hint 0:

Yes, I remember that the newspaper compared the process to a famous ice-skating race where a mediocre Austrailan won, because everyone else was either involved in mass crashes or was disqualified.

6:38 AM
@MOehm You mean "pulling a Bradbury".

@Alconja Yes, exactly. The story was probably just retold to us by the UK correspondent.

Sid
So, basically this was a referendum on the governance of Mrs. May?
And people didn't like it?

The political discussions are everywhere. I can't get away from them...

@Sid Eh, it's more complicated than that.
But it was very much a two-way fight between May and Corbyn.
With a lot of EU issues thrown into the mix.

Bradbury's strategy from the semi-final onwards was to cruise behind his opponents and hope that they crashed
you mean that was his actual plan?

Then Politics goes crazy.

7:03 AM
@Mithrandir Well, propose another topic, then.

hi

Hello! It's not morning for me :P

Does anybody want to play a game? Anything would be fine for me

we could play chess, i think i know a website that i send you a link to join
not sure tho

I meant a game on another site page, but, I guess we could play chess if you want

For playing the game Codenames. New players, see puzzling.meta...

^This for example

@Randal'Thor , (sorry to interject,) I've been spoiled here and at Lit SE by enthusiastic moderators.
More than enthusiastic: helpful: optimistic!
It can happen.
A friend says that I write like an angel but speak like the devil. Sometimes I write like I speak and live to regret it. (That last part is just on some good days. I've died with less than a whimper many times and live, again, only to do so again.)
In other words, thank you for being optimistic!
@Randal'Thor , not to mention, without a single more appropriate medium: 0xf humanoids on Dead Man's Chest!
("the" in front of "dead man's chest" in Treasure Island might be an editorial ornament)

What are you guys talking about?

I went rogue elsewhere and shot off my mouth.
As if it had been as safe as here.
Apparently no mortal wounds but still not good form.

Sid
8:16 AM
@jeyejow what have you learnt so far about chess?

(Sorry, talk about internet delay, now the system won't let me delete that false reponse. Had I seen the previous 4 messages I wouldn't have interjected)

Sid
In the game that you linked, 14. f4 is probably one of the worst moves that you can make in that position.
Though, that is anyway an unenviable position for White.

Thank you for your deep, insightful analysis

Sid
Lol. No offence intended, though..

@humn Yes, these guys are great.
It comes from the nature of the Puzzling site. We're all about fun in a way that most SE sites are very definitely not.

8:22 AM
(And minds open for scrambling!)

Sid
Also, what was the point of 21. g6? Free pawn donation?

btw we're playing on a different link rn

f4 was of course terrible, but even g3 is a bad idea

Sid
Yeah, let me complain about the last game. :P

you shouldn't weaken your king on purpose

8:23 AM
two games ago

Well, where are you now?
(stupid keyboard)

Sid
You can link. I don't run my stupid mouth when the game is going on. I run it when the game is over.

its just to take off the time pressure

Sid
Err, could you make it like 15 or 20 minute..

5min a side is usually great

8:27 AM
@Wen1now and fast, furious and frantic, though

Hey, can lichess do transfer?

Sid
With huge mistakes.

I play 5min all the time

ill go on other chat rooms maybe someone likes to play chess

8:30 AM
What's 5+8 mean?

:37989815 I said most, not all :-)

5mins + 8sec/move?

5 minutes, 8 second increment

Sid
Yep.

yeah

Sid
8:31 AM
Yeah, that is usually helpful if you can blitz your way through the opening which leaves you with more time to think in the middle game.
Or if you simply go with a Kasparov-esque sac and win thingy, then, that is helpful as well.

no one wnats to play :( i guess ill have to go online
nvm
someone entered

Fine whatever I'll play

Do you love the reti or something?

Ooh, we have spectators

O O

8:34 AM
the pressure is on
lmao

Who's white, who's black?

im white

black

I love the rules of chess. I love to play chess! But nobody enjoys playing me. They seem to hate winning.
Too easily.
Maybe that's a challenge. How to let someone win with as much difficulty as possible.

oh snap
i didnt see that coming

8:37 AM
:p

Sid
Lol.

Hey @humn Do you want to play then? I actually have work to do...
I should not be playing chess

You want to win?
Bring your work to the board.

^this makes it utterly confusing

bouncing too much to type
what is that!?!?!

8:41 AM
What is what?

It is it, and that's that

Sid
Wow...

Does anybody else want to play?

i think i need to eat breakfast

I'd prefer to watch rather than play

8:43 AM
someone wants to play me? im not that hard to beat
here is the link if you want: lichess.org/ld1jD7Mo

@boboquack , oops, I see what that board means now, it made me sneeze

for some more insightful commentary, you should probably not lose your queen if you want to win

Who's playing?

Sid
That's me.

Wait, which colous is which

Sid
8:49 AM
I am black.

im the one getting raped

Sid
Not sure that is the right word..

user288204
Are there projections $p_1 : S^n \times S^1 \to S^n$ and $p_2 : S^n \times S^1 \to S^1$; then $T(S^n \times S^1) = p_1^* TS^n \oplus p_2^* TS^1$ ?

damn i wish i could save this game
i wanna understand your start
srtat*
strat*

user288204
They should expand TS^n $\oplus$ NS^n out somewhere, but I probably made a mistake.

Sid
8:52 AM
I need to go for lunch. Can we do a draw?

sure, but you win in material
gg mate

Sid
That game would have gone for another few minutes, though..

What is that supposed to mean...

Sid
What?

ba6, and Qa8 wins...

8:53 AM
each important piece has a value
aka material
his pieces together had more value then mines

Nah, Qa4

so he wins in material, since there wanst a mate

Sid
@jan Well, who said I have to take?

Black plays Qa4 immediately

Sid
Qa4 is lost already.

8:54 AM
eh?

Not immediately

Sid
Oh, sorry.
I thought you meant after Ba6.

Qa4 is hard to defend

Sid
I would have gone for Qa4 in the next move. But lunch...

well i need to get better at chess :P i started learning a few weeks ago

Sid
8:57 AM
Also, What was 8.e4 meant to be?

14 ... Be7 IMO is really weak

9:14 AM
ok
i eated smthing
someone wanna play one game of chess?

Where?

Sid
@Wen Be7 was a very poor move.

Chess.com?

there is a website that i can send you a link and it matches us to a game of chess
no, another one, ill make a link
1 sec

Sid
As soon as I played that move, I knew that was bad.

Sid
I didn't want to lose a pawn actually

I can't play a sustained game now, sorry

Sid
And also didn't want to pin my knight to the queen.

well, if annyone wants to play a little with me

Clcik the link
^ creepy pasta reference

Sid
who is who?

9:18 AM

I'm black

im retarded cause im not paying attention to my moves

Sid
Um... Lol

yey he didnt notice my queen
:')

Neither am I
You didn't notice the bishop
:p

9:19 AM
xD

I haven't played chess for about 2 months
And that was transfer
Notably, I moved the bishop to pin the knight and forgot about it

I RECENTLY STARTED LEARNING
oops caps

Sid
I played my first game in a year.

Ooh, I can 'give 15 seconds'
I'm concentrating enough to see that...

time is so frustrating

9:25 AM
(whee, I'm 41 seconds up)

:'(

Sid
... Wow.
Oh, you saw that at last.

Missed it first time
Not sure I can rematch, I've got work to do.
Sorry

oh ok, np
godamn i suck at chess

Maybe Sid can play?

9:29 AM
Sid alreaddy played wiht me i think

Sid
I can.

hes good too
ill make a link then

Sid
@Jeyejow you could ask Sconibulus. He is a national-level player, if I am not wrong. But, I don't think he has the time, though.

nice o.o

I would play, but I can't until maybe Saturday night (my time - it's 12:30PM at the moment). Sorry.

9:31 AM
what is the best way for me to learn to play better chess? just play vs stronger people?

Yes.

i mean thats is true but i dont really learn much when im defeated... maybe i should pay more attention when im playing

If you're on chess.com, I can play a game as long as the time thing is more than one day.

i play verry careless

I'd say slightly stronger, you don't learn a lot by being destroyed

9:33 AM
@jeyejow I played like that for years. Now, after just playing against stronger players online, I can beat everyone in my family. Practice makes perfect ;)

Sid
True. You need to practice some tactics or learn about different openings.

Who's playing?

Sid
That's me,

yh, i like that bisop thing you do
its a good counter

as? w/b?

9:34 AM
im white

My strategy against weaker players is to just attack viciously
Like here I'd go for...

Sid
What is yh?

Actually I don't think I should say

yh = yeah = yes

Where's all the time gone?

9:36 AM
goddamn this time makes me frustrated

Seriously, it's 5+8

i need time to think
im slow

I would recommend 2+1 for fast games which are fun and exciting

no, i like the games were you have time to think and just chill

Okay, as white I would have gone for the 'cheap' a4-a5-a6-etc. plan

9:37 AM
Have you played a minus variant before?
(e.g. 5-5)

I have never seen any chess clock (anywhere) with a minus variant
That would just be weird
a4-a5-a6 plan is still fine

No, I programmed it for myself, but I've seen it elsewhere
The strategies become more move-based.

move-based?
What does that mean?

Because each move takes time, so you execute plans that pay off in the least amount of moves possible
If you have 50 seconds and you see an 8 move checkmate in 5-5, you have to think fast.

These 5+8 games are boring because players are too passive

9:40 AM
too passive? this is intense as f
this is like rushing the game

Woah! What did white just do?

nah forget it
its too little time for me
i cant think properly

1+0 is too fast, anything above is fine

maybe for you
i cant do it
lmao
hes too good and its way too little time

Back at 28. f5 of the last match there's a 23 move mate

9:43 AM
Time doesn't matter much

for you it doesnt, but for me it does

especially because there's an 8-second increment

I prefer games where you have 3 days between each move and the clock resets after each move.

Sid
@bobo Unfortunately, I can't see mate in more than 5 moves. :P

i need time to think period
having a clock near me counting down distracts me

9:44 AM
@Mithrandir So the four move checkmate could still take 3 weeks?

Anybody up for codenames? We have way more than enough

I am

 Codenames

For playing the game Codenames. New players, see puzzling.meta...

Sid
o/

@mith and @jeyejow?

9:47 AM
hm?

^^^codenames
That's what I meant when I asked who would like to play a game earlier

@boboquack Yeah
@boboquack still haven't figured that one out

@Mithrandir There's a guided explanation going on

Also, time - sorry

2 hours later…
12:03 PM
Mornin' and happy Friday \o/

12:17 PM
thankfully its friday
i need the weekend to make my project, i procastinated for a long time

@humn You're much appreciated here humdinger :)

Yep. I'm always happy to see @humn here, even when I don't quite understand the things they're saying. (They're the regular kind of cryptic, not the crossword kind.)
5

Exactly :)
And g'mornin' Mr Trick

pff
Morning to you too, 4-way rotationally symmetric pattern.

You're hysterical. A riot. I'm rolling.

12:28 PM
(I assume that's sarcasm. :P )

Maybe. Maybe not.
I do enjoy your statement is getting starred and is now appearing to point to the 4C pin :P

Fixed.

Well now you're just taking credit :P
You could've at least called him a humdinger too XD
Anyhoo.. what did you think the keystream is for that Solitaire cipher is?

Well, I can't tell if it's an ongoing competition. If it's not, wouldn't they have posted solutions?

I can't seem to find a solution.. not sure if it was a competition or just some "Hey here's a brainteaser, also check out our site/what we do"

12:35 PM
Oh, it's definitely a competition.
I found the source:
Love puzzles? Love technology? Then ethical hacking and/or cyber defence could be for you! https://areyouan.ncc.ninja/… https://twitter.com/i/web/status/786108266321502209
That first link says "Welcome to the NCC Group Graduate challenge!"

See that doesn't look like a competition though itself
I think the first link, and the thing as a whole is a competition or whatever

"The purpose of the NCC Group Graduate challenge is to allow graduates and non-graduates alike to qualify for the interview stage of our 2017 programme intake. To qualify, work your way through the challenges and gather as many points as possible."

But that twitter post is just a teaser or a "hey this is what it could be like"

You think so? That's not the impression I got, but it very well could be.

I don't think they'd release part of the actual competition on their twitter..
Especially when it involves signing up which they'd want people to do I assume

12:37 PM
Well, you could have to sign up to submit your solution.

Yeah but would they want others to solve it and be able to provide solutions to something they want to use to test other people with?
The "competition" is supposed to test people for interviews, I can't imagine they'd give out a freebee like that

Well, considering that giving out the solution would only disadvantage you compared to the others, it's possible that they wouldn't mind.

I can absolutely see it both ways, that was just my take on it.
