Q: Hexadecimal = n times decimal

WillemienWas explaining hexadecimal numbers to a friend and this made me wonder: "Is there an hexadecimal number x that is a whole number n times its decimal value ?" So for example the hexadecimal number 100 . $100_{16 }=256_{10}$ is thus 2.56 times its decimal value. (not a whole number) But now whi...

That feeling when you're solving a crossword and only know an answer because there was a puzzle involving it :D ("Type of brown sugar (8)", Guardian Quick 14682)

@ffao It's pretty large, but it's still smaller that the 2 mb cap.

3 hours later…
5:32 AM
@Sp3000 Not only that, but one of the puzzles you made!
(Also, hey! I'm stuck on your Mahjong puzzle. Posted a partial answer.)

:P

I've made a significant amount of progress, though.

Quite a lot it seems :) 9B does appear once in section 5 though

Ah. I just skimmed over it briefly.
Edited.
Anyway, I've got no idea how to extract from the other sections. I'll probably go to sleep fairly soon - maybe in the morning I'll think of something.

:P k (I also noticed you didn't mention extraction for part 1)
I'd give hints/confirmation, but I'm not sure whether I should

5:41 AM
Ah. for part 1, I probably should've actually paid attention to the tiles on the left.
That would've been a good idea.

But I got the person I wanted to start learning the game, so mission accomplished for me :P

Yeah, I figured this puzzle was made for me. I appreciate it :D

:P

I'd probably have been be more motivated to learn if I had anyone to play with :P

Yeah, needing enough people is always a pain :/ (which is also why the board games I have don't get enough love)

5:49 AM
I'm lucky enough to be part of a board game club at my university, so I can get game nights together pretty frequently (well, during the school year - now that it's summer, that's dried up)
wonder if I could teach some of them Mahjong (after learning it, of course)

(fyi for 1 the last letter should be something else)
Ahaha maybe, the other fun/annoying part of mahjong is even if everyone "knows" it, it's not always the same ruleset

yeah, I've heard that too - there are all sorts of variants, no?

Yeah, for the most part it's what constitutes a valid hand (in the sense that you usually need to form something significant e.g. flush/half flush/all triplets - not covered in this puzzle) and scoring

(also, thanks for correcting that last letter - apparently, I can't read what I had just typed)
Which ruleset is this?

@Deusovi if a puzzle already has a Sudoku tag, does it need a grid-deduction tag?

5:58 AM
Does it need one? No - should be a strict subset of . But having it may be helpful.

Japan for the most part has a pretty standard ruleset, so I went with that

Thanks, that's what I thought too.
I was thinking of adding the grid-deduction tag to the determinant Sudoku, what do you think?
*deduction

I don't see a problem with adding it.

OK cool.
That clue is still unsolved :o

(fyi there's also a more modern "international" ruleset, where scoring is easier to calculate but the hands allowed can be quite... weird e.g. en.wikipedia.org/wiki/…)

5 hours later…
10:42 AM
@Deusovi Just renamed "2. Triplets" to "2. Melds" - I forgot that the former is actually usually used for 3 of a kind specifically (wanted to reference the fact that 4-of-a-kind is not present, but oh well the disclaimer will do)

...why was a too chatty flag on this declined?
@humn ..awesome solve — Dharmesh Jan 9 at 16:50

We typically don't care about "too chatty" comments unless there are a lot of them.

I've flagged 'too chatty' before and they all get declined, think they don't really matter
Unless there is a full on conversation

4:21 PM
...

...?

@BeastlyGerbil On fire! 2 gone..\m/

I'm loving this conversation. It looks like a morse code variant but with ? instead of -

.?. . .. ?. ...? . ?. ? ?? ??? .?. ... . ?.?. ??? ?.. .

4:34 PM
.... ..

Hmmm, I've flagged a couple of comments now where as soon as I flag them they delete themselves. Any reason for this?

^^^that does say something, you know

Shiro is probably on the case
^^ So did mine
GaMen

oh lol i don't even need a translator to see what that means

@thecoder16 But we can't reinvent it unless we are called 'morse' :P

4:37 PM
ah darn it time to come up with a new morse code

@Deusovi Kami no does anagram to Konami, which is at least a single word?

@ffao Oh, KONAMI! I bet the answer is 573.

I'm guessing we're forming a winning hand

Sounds plausible.

But no idea how to extract when the other two don't even have letters to extract from

TSLFFrom chess starting setup position the twins are playing White. All regular rules are applied except Black player shall win if he makes it to 7th move but moves only after each twin makes a move. How can the twins checkmate their opponent to win?

5:35 PM
@ffao I mean, we have an ordering for the last one. If we can find some relatively straightforward way to associate tiles to letters, then we're done.

I'd be happier about that if every replacement were unique
but with 4 possibilities, is it like "choose one"?

which puzzle is this?

@thecoder16 Sp3000's Mahjong puzzle.
@ffao Yeah, agreed, but I don't have any other ideas.

That took me an hour, @BeastlyGerbil :P

I was expecting a couple of bullet points! Thanks. Really

I did add some bullet points... ;)
Also, you're on the HNQ now.

Been there a while
And your additions make my answer look even better :P
And I suppose the question title is... kinda noticeable

That's kinda the point. I've done it other times as well.

totally doesn't mean boardgames, it's not like it's in the url :P

8:04 PM
@BeastlyGerbil *site. Not network
The network is the whole SE engine

8:15 PM
@BeastlyGerbil you shoudl make that your avatar

rand you getting close to 50k now
And you also are getting very good at sudoku :P

Just 450 to go.
And yeah, two sudokus in as many days!
Sudoku+s, rather.
Sudokus with twists.

both HNQ too :P

Both? Nice!

determinant is still on HNQ! the other is page 1
That 450 might be more like 300 in a few hours :P

8:55 PM
I'm nearly repcapped for the day, so it better wait for a few hours :-P

9:31 PM
@rand repcapped now :P Can still get +15 from an accept and its only an hour a half till it resets though

Anyone have any ideas for the rest of Sp's Mahjongg puzzle?

I looked at it and immediately clicked 'back' :P

It's not bad at all.
You should be able to get the idea pretty easily - the hard part is the extraction.

where are you guys stuck at right now?
i can be a dumb fresh perspective :P

It's all in my answer.

9:35 PM
@deus not something I want to look out when I'm supposed to be revising for a maths exam

Oh. Fair point.

Normally I'd be very intersted

@Deusovi try to link the replacements?

Hm?

4D→8D→1C→6B
some sort of cycle?

9:38 PM
Oh, like in a chain? I tried that, but the starting tiles are unique 1D-9D and 1C-5C. That should be enough of an ordering.

i'm taking your get ready replacements

Plus, the replacement discard tiles are unique, but the tiles to draw are not.

maybe you find the right tiles to draw?

Well, some don't allow for anything in the 1D-9D/1C-5C range, IIRC.

night all

9:44 PM
Night! Good luck with your exam!

9:55 PM
@Deus I haven't checked the others, but I can see that for 3) what you have for the second hand is slightly off

@BeastlyGerbil Nope, still two hours. Daylight savings, remember?

1 hour later…
11:14 PM
Almost at work, so in case it starts turning into a slog here's a minor extraction hint: cbffvoyl gur fvzcyrfg jnl bs gheavat zhygvcyr ahzoref vagb bar (admittedly now that I think about it, part 3 could have done with more of a confirmer)
