@KeshavSrinivasan Unfortunately I have not.
There aren’t a huge number of books that go into a great deal of depth into Jewish mythology, theology, and folklore, though, so it does sound interesting.
There are a few “fan favorite” Jewish characters that show up frequently. Lilith, obviously, shows up frequently, often as a powerful demon or a progenitor of demons.
The golem is a particular favorite, sometimes serving as an excuse to bring in a stereotypical (or not so stereotypical) Jewish rabbi, sometimes as a whole class of magic.
Gehenna is reasonably popular. Blame D&D?
And of course there’s occasionally bits of generic Abrahamic Old Testament stuff brought along, which doesn’t really count.

@Adamant Lilith is mentioned in Unsong but she's not a character in the book. Golems do play a role. Names of God and Kabbalah also play a prominent role.

But it’s rare that a work really goes into much depth.
@KeshavSrinivasan Well, obviously you’ve got to have the popular stuff if you have the more detailed things, but the converse is not true.

@Adamant There's a whole lot of really obscure figures who play a role. Like Rabbi Elisha ben Abuyah, for instance.

@KeshavSrinivasan Yes, some of those old Kabbalists were basically straight-up sorcerers.
Even outside of fiction. ;)

well here you go: Are there any stories where Wizards/Magicians actually use guns and other modern-day tools?

depends on your definition of wizard/magician, but Chronicles of Amber has things like people traveling between dimensions in order to find gunpowder formulas that do and don't work in the dimension they want to conquer, for example

I was more thinking along Harry Potter esque settings tbh

I mean we've got Brandon Sanderson with his Mistborn Trilogy, MINOR SPOILERS AHEAD, combining firearms and magic quite well, but then again his magic is based around using and manipulating metal. So guns are a logical conclusion in these scenarios.

12:07 PM
It has been a long time since last I read an Amber book, but it seems to me that Merlin had access to magic / some sort of magic and it was woven into the series with ease. It may have been that the Courts of Chaos had access to magic.

several characters definitely have abilities that muggles like us would consider magic, if nothing else

@Ixrec It has kind of surprised me that that series has not been made into a set of movies or tv series.

Symon PaulCan anyone confirm that this tv sci fi drama from the 70's existed or has this title? How to review this?

unfortunately, probably 'Looks Okay'
Source Code is a 2011 American-France science fiction thriller film directed by Duncan Jones, produced by Mark Gordon, Jordan Wynn, and Philippe Rousselet, and written by Ben Ripley. It stars Jake Gyllenhaal as a U.S. Army captain who is sent into a computed reality to find a bomber; additionally starring Michelle Monaghan, Vera Farmiga, and Jeffrey Wright. The film had its world premiere on March 11, 2011 at South by Southwest, and was released by Summit Entertainment on April 1, 2011 in North America and Europe. The film received acclaim from critics upon its release and became a box office success...

I actually liked that movie
but yeah it's nothing like what OP asked for

Source Code is really good.

@DrRDizzle Man of Steel good?

1:29 PM
@Gallifreyan No, like actually good.

@DrRDizzle So... Batman vs Superman good?
@Mithrandir Galadriel

Huh. Looks like it was directed by the guy who directed Moon. On the other hand, so was Warcraft.

@Edlothiad ah, thanks
no wait
I know who the picture is

@Edlothiad No, like genuinely, actually good, for real.

@Edlothiad I can't figure out who the singer is. The picture was completely unrelated.

1:31 PM
Warcraft did a very good job actually?

@Gallifreyan If the premise of Source Code sounds interesting to you, then you should go see it. It's that kind of good.

Hey, I heard about it, particularly about Jake Gyllenhaal being in it. I'll add it to my watch list.

Warcraft: The Beginning - the only film I've ever seen where the subtitle ends up being an ironic commentary on the franchise.

@Gallifreyan I agree with @Ixrec It is good
Ah the Gang is here, I saw Aliens-Cov, yesterday, had time to think about what I saw and decided that if Humans were as stupid and reckless as that "Crew", we probably don't deserve to live as a species. Having said that, then looking at it from the perspective that Humans need to die, it was a good enough movie.

@EnigmaMaitreya Well, thematically, Alien: Covenant is at least in part about the idea that humanity needs to be replaced, so that makes sense.

I'm randomly going though my accounts and changing the avatars to random LotR characters

@Mithrandir You've got Sauron here. You're bad and you should feel bad

@Edlothiad I'm keeping Sauron around on all my top sites

1:41 PM
that reminds me im going to print that sauron xkcd and put it up everywhere

@DrRDizzle It is a good enough movie, it is just, for me, now quite perplexing as to where this is going. I mean seriously, the crew were something that is ripe for the two Robots and the Humanto mock/make fun of. Not their acting just the choices.

@zabeus ?

@Edlothiad @Mithrandir posted it yesterday xkcd.com/712

@DrRDizzle Scouting Ship on the planet, the left behind woman allows 2 to enter with "panic" mode on them. Sees an exiting Alien. Closes 1 in the room, goes gets a gun, comes back and opens the door ..... I would prefer to do this as non spoiler as much as possible. That is at leas 2 bone head quarantine choices being made.

Floof + bonus beauty:

1:51 PM
@Edlothiad it's an axototl :p I used to have one as a pet

@Riker Lies, otherwise you'd have known its an axolotl

@EnigmaMaitreya Well, she's panicking, badly.

SQB
@Gallifreyan there's no there there.
Ah, nvrmnd, vpn was acting up.

@DrRDizzle Yes :) She is, she sees the event, runs for the door and locks an uninfected person in the room, begging to be let out (trailer) goes gets a gun, comes back and then opens the door. To me, that is way beyond being panicked, it is being syntactically challenged. The Captain, sees David doing something, in the room of the person he went to find, does something, then decides to follow David, that is a second example.

that part made perfect sense to me, she panicked by locking the other person in the room with the monster, then calmed down just enough to decide she should try to save them by grabbing a gun and going back in there
admittedly, I am comparing the Covenant crew to the Prometheus crew, so I might be overly nice to the Covernant guys

2:05 PM
64 more flags...

@Ixrec Ok, I think your saying her flight or fight response was to flee, then decides to fight .... that seems to be an abrupt change of mind.
@Ixrec Please be advised I am not pursing the choices made in regards to the crews "duty" to others.

I can't understand that sentence

@Ixrec Lets just wait awhile them .... ok?

@Edlothiad lol

ok done doing actual work for a second
this is probably as much discussion as is worth doing on that particular point since "Was X stupid?" in a horror movie is reaaaaaaaally subjective
and I can understand finding that particular scene stupid; although I did not find it stupid it probably could've been more convincing with a few tweaks
it's certainly not like when someone says the Prometheus crew was perfectly sensible and I'm like "...no"

2:17 PM
@Ixrec There we are in agreement as well. Yea that guy was scared crapless when they were in the "ship" but thinks the alien snake/worm was a Fluffy candidate?

and that was just one of many things

@Ixrec Agreed, like Old man Wayland, thinking the Engineers would treat him as an equal and save him?

I've seen a lot of videos about how Prometheus was supposed to make so much sense, but then they cut everything from the movie

that part could've actually been interesting if they gave us a bit more info
@DaaaahWhoosh now that I can believe
what's sad with Prometheus is that almost all the things that seemed dumb to me could have seemed fine with some tweaks in the right places

@DaaaahWhoosh That may be the case, but the release version just had many cases of people being ... unrealistic.

2:19 PM
like, I'm pretty sure there was no need for the guy with the map to get lost in the part he just mapped in order for the plot to advance
and there certainly was no plot need for the infamous "Prometheus school of running away from things" scene

@Ixrec Yes, and seeing the Hologram of the Aliens running, yes that makes me so want to bring a severed head into the only home I have on the planet.

it's not like North by Northwest where most of the plot hinged on the protagonist doing one particuular unbelievably stupid thing
(sorry, off-topic movie, but that one still annoys me)

it seems like movies these days don't really have to make sense. Look at all those movies about villains who got themselves captured, just so they could escape again

I just wrote all those choices off as establishing the culture for Prometheus.
@Ixrec Ah, back to what I said that you couldn't understand, try this, "The needs of the many out weigh the needs of the few" vs "The needs of the few outweigh the needs of the many" ....

@EnigmaMaitreya This is what us as the audience are thinking because we know the neomorph is way too powerful for her. She does not know that.

2:31 PM
@Ixrec I am speaking of the Female Captain on the ground asking the Pilot of the Mother ship to do something......

oh I thought you were talking about her going back into the medbay(?) with a gun after locking it

My bad, I jumped and did not make it explicitly clear

Huh, my rotating the chatroom name and feeds' names idea has a pretty good response on Meta:

A: What to name our new main chat room (or keep it as it is)

CreationEdgeI had a proposal in chat that went over pretty well, so I was asked to submit it here. My idea is to make the chat room a holodeck of sorts, and periodically change the name/feeds to represent some of the varying fanbases we have in the community. I wonder if I should make a new meta or something, or what. The response is quite high.
