Hi all! especially Zanna, i have an easy question
I want to install ubuntu on my new laptop but not the default way...i want to get to expert mode...for example when i run a virtualbox i get that option with pressing the F6 key and on my laptop i get to default gui installation immediately...ist this because of the UEFI bios??
@Zanna

hmm? I am not sure what you mean...
what is this expert mode?

installation on Virtual Box and actual hardware is slightly different. Especially with UEFI, you'd need to play around with settings from within Windows. Been a while since i've done it, so won't be able to help with exact steps

I know nothing haha

[ SmokeDetector | MS ] Bad keyword in link text in body: how to run hotstar live streaming on ubuntu 16.10 by user681799 on askubuntu.com

@Zanna in virtual box there is "expert mode"

7:38 PM
fancy ^_^

Which is basically same thing as basic, except that it takes you more steps

how to get inot that
into
actually i want to install desktop ubuntu without gui
is this even possible
with UEFI

@lewis4u the only "desktop" ubuntu without a GUI is the GUI. Install the server version.
Or the minimal install.

ok i have already done that....and i am not sure is there some difference concerning the kernel
because i think on server the kernel is lower version
is that possible
i have kernel 4.4

As far as I know desktop and server are pretty much use the same base system.

7:44 PM
and i have been reading that there are higher versions for desktop 4.8 or even 4.9
can you check which kernel version do you have

I've 4.4.0-75 and I'm on 16.04 LTS

Really wish UnrealEngine 4 didn't crash.

ok

Different release versions get different versions, though

i don't have sound at all and i don't know how to install it

7:45 PM
Anyway, I'll go back to youtube

@SergiyKolodyazhnyy That's what I know too. Ubuntu Desktop just has a graphical installer and installs a display server and a graphical desktop environment in addition to everything in Ubuntu Server.

i have installed everything what i have found... and still nothing
maybe it's because the laptop is very new
???

¯\_(ツ)_/¯

Q: Should we do something about the [lowgraphics] tag?

ZannaI just noticed that we have a tag lowgraphics. This seems like a suboptimal situation. Lowgraphics isn't a even a word. If we really need a tag for that, shouldn't it be low-graphics-mode? And since we have this canonical post: How to fix "The system is running in low-graphics mode" error? (wh...

include the output of lspci

What to ask i mean it's too broad....can you narrow it down
How to install and enable sound on ubuntu? that sounds terrible

@UbuntuQuestionsonU&L chillax

@UbuntuQuestionsonU&L Untag that carp as Ubuntu. OP is using Debian
@Zanna You meant to say , cccchilaaaaxxxx ?

I installed so many packages trying to get one app to run (to answer a question of course) it seems like less effort to reinstall that clean up my system package by package

7:51 PM
@Zanna I know the situation. We do crazy stuff to be able to answer a question haha
"Now since when do I have this package on my computer?"

@lewis4u "can't get sound working on Ubuntu [server|minimal]"

@JacobVlijm ikr!
@JacobVlijm and I need a clean system so I can make sure the answer to the next question like that doesn't miss any dependencies...
also my toaster only has 32GB total storage...
@SergiyKolodyazhnyy I'll leave that to the OP haha

Thank you @Seth

who pinged me
and then deleted the message

@TheWanderer wasn't me, but here's a fresh ping which won't be deleted
<3

8:00 PM
not I

oh it was @Chan-HoSuh
probably trying to ping @TheXed

what is this? a retaliation ping?? :D

muahahahahahaha

Lol.

@Chan-HoSuh No , it's a love ping. @TheWanderer is a fluffy bunny who spreads luff and heppinez

8:04 PM
wat

NUFFIN
runs away back to youtube

@RobotHumans it just does, ok

well, i'm not letting it rep farm. it caught a DV from me until it finds an edit to make it useful instead of a copy paste from the dupe.

pls

8:16 PM
If it's the same answer and it magically starts working when a user posts it, then it should be closed as a dupe, not left open as a new QA
OP explicitly states "previous answers didn't work"

what is "sarcasm"

okok. was just saying.

Gogs is doing something weird, every so often, it jumps to 100% CPU utilization without anything unusual showing up in the logs.

Gogs?

The problem goes away as soon as I restart it.
@TheWanderer gogs.io
Self-hosted GitHub clone thing.
The only reason I notice the problem is that I have Monit set to watch for excessive resource usage on the server.

8:29 PM
is this macOS?

Nope, x86 server running 16.04.

8:52 PM
maybe it's compressing files

But then it should eventually quit.

I'm pegged at 100% right now, but it's because I restarted my pandas/talib precompute store b/c with the upgrade to pandas 0.19 rounding rules changed, and I want it homogenous.

Q: Can't get sound on ubuntu server minimal

lewis4uI have installed ubuntu server on my new laptop and followed this tutorial: How to Resolve no sound problem on Ubuntu 14.04, 13.10, 13.04 and Older versions but no luck. I have installed dkms, linux essential headers, alsa-base, pulseaudio when i run lspci | grep Audio i get this ubuntu@ubun...

9:15 PM
try unmuting in alsamixer and the pulseaudio config purge takkat recommended somewhere. those two always fix it for me
on intel onboard audio

alsamixer is not muted. what is takkat???

mv ~/.config/pulse ~/.config/pulse.old
@Takkat is our resident sound subsystem guy.
sometime pulse crashes and it just needs a reset

i have run that command and now restarted
rebooted
still no sound
it's like the soundspeakers are off
I have only dummy output...under hardware devices it's empty
And under that dummy output the soundbar is moving when i play a video from youtube for example
but i can't hear that sound

9:30 PM
I had a problem with doom4 taking over alsa and corrupting the pulse config, but moving the config and reset fixed it. no idea what's doing it to you. last time i had the problem, i had to reset pulse and close all browsers. a pulse conf reset and reboot would have done it
might be hard selecting hdmi or something

how to check that

sure you're not on an rpi or something?
alsamixer

Q: Lenovo Y700 Elantech touchpad query 0x01 failed

ddnomadI have an annoying problem with my Elantech touchpad for at least a half a year now. Most of the time it randomly loses sync and got recognized as PS/2 Elantech Touchpad or BYD Touchpad. It varies from update to update but in essence these errors persist in dmesg: psmouse serio1: Failed to enabl...

or pulsectl

how to check that also?
i have used ubuntu only as a virtual machine 2 or 3 years until today
this is first time that i am trying to install it on real hardware
and the laptop is very new

9:34 PM
well, if you have hdmi plugged in, it might be defaulting to that like it does with headphones. unplug all audio outs and start over. just what i'ld do

nothing plugged in

then i'm stuck. wait for @Takkat

OK thank you anyway for your time
i appreciate it

crap, pavucontrol was the one i was thinking of.
not pulsectl

???
i dont know if i have that
pavucontrol

9:37 PM
try and run it. if it won't run, it will recommend a package to install

pavucontrol is gui iirc

yes

i have GUI installed
lxdm

ok then, nevermind.

since his question is "server minimal" he may be missing packages. overinstalling to get it working the checking the diff would be an option

9:37 PM
i'll try now to install pavucontrol

also, hello everyone. i'm back from my little hiatus such as to not explode in the face of a few people here for... reasons. Instead of throwing things at people's faces, I will instead be taking a page from @ThomasWard's book and throwing things into /dev/null.

sup @Kaz

i already have pavucontrol
how can i run it

run it...

just pavucontrol in a terminal

9:40 PM
yeah that's the same thing from my video
That's my video BTW
but still no sound on speakers

that audio is REALLY low

how to crank it up haha

alsamixer

yes
i did that also

you pavumixer should look more like this:

9:45 PM
High

either the app is turned down or alsamixer is turned down
and yes, i like my stuff loud

well it seems to me that i don't have some packages installed because this is very minimalistic and custom

probs
that's why i shot for reinstalling pavuctl or reinstalling pulse
maybe --with-recommends just in case

yeah i will probably go all over again
but anyway i have one more final question

if you went too custom (like custom kernel) you probably pooched the driver somewhere

9:48 PM
when you install ubuntu custom....what is a common procedure to install drivers for hardware--- looking it from a windows os user perspective

drivers just happen on ubuntu

most drivers come from the kernel, so unless you're installing a custom kernel...

theoretically

ok so it's like auto

yeah, it's like win 10 caught up to ubuntu from 5 years ago

9:49 PM
you shouldn't have anything to do with drivers normally it's like "out of the box"

ofc there is the occasional userland driver (printers) or odd driver that installed as a post-install proprietary (graphics, networking) , but for the most part everything most people need is in the kernel.

ok i see
thanks

yep. unless you get corner case hardware - or want blob drivers for performance

^--

heh

9:51 PM
i have access to some very specialized hardware, which needs a third-party driver as an example.
(ofc, it also works without the third-party stuff, but is just missing some features because yay linux)

don't get me started on AIO printers
or bumblebee dual gpu switching. both are nightmares

doubly so when it's nvidia prime instead of true gpu switching

It seemed like a good idea at the time

It is a good idea on Windows where there's driver support for it.
It's not the worst idea, but it's just so poorly executed that it's 100% worthless

one more question i wanted to see only how much battery do i have left some indicator and i installed the indicator from apt and it took 333MB...that is way to much....for just showing the percentage of battery
is there something else lightweight

9:56 PM
really lightweight:
grep POWER_SUPPLY_CAPACITY /sys/class/power_supply/BAT0/uevent
of course, if you want something in the GUI, that's also doable. The large size is probably due to all of the dependencies the battery indicator wants.

yeah that's what i was thinking also....because i don't have anything on my machine....that's probably why there is no sound

if you're on LXDE, there should already be one built in. see: forum.lxde.org/viewtopic.php?f=8&t=1505

i installed lxde core
so that is also crippled

there is such a thing as "too light"

yeah my machine is too light installed heh...nothing works
on virtual machine it wasn't important
but now it matters
nah... i need to reinstall it....totally

10:03 PM
just a question... what's the purpose behind such a light OS?

i ran lxqt with kwin on top of a server install for a while, just for funsies.

I had till now such a virtual machine in windows host and i was developing in it and now i bought laptop
all was working fine
but i had no sound
and it didn't bother me
i have a whole procedure how to make it so light that it is under 1.9GB when all is installed including GUI
but for a laptop i need some additional things that I am yet to find out

A: How to install LXQt DE in Ubuntu 14.04 LTS?

RobotHumansAs previously stated, if you want to install lxqt on top of openbox you can: sudo add-apt-repository ppa:lubuntu-dev/lubuntu-daily sudo add-apt-repository ppa:gilir/q-project sudo apt-get update sudo apt-get install openbox obconf sudo apt-get install lxqt-metapackage lxqt-panel If y...

^^ that gets you under 4Gb with everything working on lxqt

i see...LXQt is successor of LXDM right

yes. it's the bastard child of lxdm and razor-qt
