12:15 AM
I see now what threw me when looking at the meanings of "heroes" and "vanquishers" - the posting starts off telling us that "a new one is born every 2 weeks" but that's typically not true: the first twelve FTCs listed no winners at all, and of all those since only 5 times did the most-viewed and most-upvoted coincide. So I took the "new one" to be the challenge itself, not the challenge winner, as there's much more often than not more than one winner per fortnight. Makes more sense to me now.

I guess that's the downside of living in Japan... Everytime I post something during the day, it is the night in america/europe so it mostly gets ignored... For me it was monday, but for everyone else is was sunday night.

12:38 AM
you got 1000 views in 11 hours O_O what kind of sorcery is this!

12:50 AM
Oh, you live in Japan? Cool!

1:11 AM
@stackreader I enjoyed it!
Oh my thing ended up on HNQ so that's why it hit the 1k in that time, it was an easy puzzle anyway..

2 hours later…
2:51 AM
@GentlePurpleRain @Sconibulus One of you should post a new CCCC. I think it's probably Sconibulus since he got the correct explanation.

1 hour later…
4:13 AM
@Gareth If @Sconibulus hasn't posted by morning (say, 10 hours from now), I'll put something up.

2 hours later…

Wow. that ASCII Art Painting puzzle was pretty cool. nice solve, @deus

7:14 AM
Nice one, @stackreader! That was an interesting puzzle. (And nice job solving it, @Rubio!)

Q: What was Detective Sherlock missing?

TechidiotDetective Sherlock, known for his amazing adventures, went through a distressful time in his life. It was like he had lost interest in solving his cases. For straight six days, he was under a lot of discomfort. During the same time, he wrote himself a few letters. He hoped that the letters might ...

@humn As you suggested, I copied it here, but my brain was well-rested and my memories not near, so I took you on trust and hoped that it works - check it you must, with your lovable quirks. — rand al'thor 2 mins ago
@humn How's my Thurberism coming along?

11:59 AM
GaMen all

GamEn.

Ummm... is it just me or is my icon slightly higher than everyone else's in the list?

Gamen!

Just you.

12:02 PM
Its still like that

Just you
Also how is it Evening in UK?

Not here.

Sorry meant GAmen...
Oh its gone now I reloaded

Okay just making sure I'm not crazy

12:04 PM
@n_palum I think you could have clued for looking at PSE history :)

@Techidiot I tried to nudge MOehm to include the hint, I liked how you used MAR for the end of GRAM

It's just that, I am good with remembering conversations here ;)
Thanks @BeastlyGerbil

Nice puzzle... Hope it gets you 10k :)

Oh. Yes
Lets see. Slow and steady. :)

You'll be our 31st 10k+ user :P

12:07 PM
@Techidiot It's peeking on HNQ so you just may
and I didn't wanna blatantly clue looking at PSE history
figured it would be even easier

Heh, if you want a puzzle where you have to look at history see mine :P

Hmm.. It's not easy to find it though. I mean, people can google the dates and get the historical things, but I am not sure if PSE history shows up

@BeastlyGerbil d'ye see a flag?

where?

EH, gone now.
We were testing something.

12:10 PM
I probably either missed it or didn't get it
Test again...
I wasn't in the room at the time...

Nah, we already did it twice. It's okay.

Oh ok, sorry :)

@Techidiot Fair I guess... I also literally asked rand about when PSE was created on here so someone was bound to find it

@BeastlyGerbil +1 :)

Hehe :P I swear a puzzle has been done on every single feature by now
I mean we even had a puzzle on clicking 'edit'

12:16 PM
Yeah. That one

I have to say that was very clever

Q: Diary of a hairdresser

boboquackToday I went to cut my hair, and the hairdresser told me a weird story. Yesterday, I had a group of people come to cut their hair. Together, they embodied the one type of hair I hate. A celebrity came in first, and brightly asked me to trim a bit past the middle. A player came in next, a...

1:06 PM
They're arguing unsolvable

Its solvable, but with the current wording it is arguable it is unsolvable

Yeah but I feel like they're being nitpicky especially considering it is not actually OPs puzzle

Yeah
I see were they are coming from, but they are being overly pedantic

Okay that's what I felt

2:16 PM
Okay, this one will probably get solved very quickly, but it was kind of fun to make:
CCCC: "Hearken there, oh spell! I seek relocation. Help me escape hell, come home to kin unharmed!" (5'1, 2, 5, 4, 4. 5'1, 2, 5, 4, 4. 5'1, 2, 5, 4, 4.)

Easy? Oh geez

THERE'S NO PLACE LIKE HOME, THERE'S NO PLACE LIKE HOME, THERE'S NO PLACE LIKE HOME
I'm assuming anagram, but I really just looked at the enumeration

@stacksfiller You should verify your answers before posting.

Yeah everything but "unharmed" is the anagram and "unharmed" is the indicator.
sorry

Correct.
I figured it wouldn't take long. The enumeration is pretty unique.

2:22 PM
I kinda don't understand how "unharmed" means you should anagram it though

If its harmed its mangled, so if its unharmed its unmangled

That^
Consider the solution to be the original, and the clue is the mangled version.
You need to "unmangle" it to get the solution.

Also a bit of a unusual one
CCCC: Trump, no trump, Trump. (9)

2:43 PM
Whoa, didn't realize my CCCC archive was so far behind... It's up-to-date now.

There was a few rapid ones

How do you make things bold inside { } things
I really suck at formatting puzzling.stackexchange.com/questions/51097/… ....

I'm not seeing any { }

I un did it because it wasn't working

Where are you wanting them?

The button to auto do it is { } but it's the code block ` `
I was trying to put them around the numbers so it matched the question

3:11 PM
So you want the numbers in a code block?
but keeping the bold...

I'm working on it, althought the bold isn't very bold

Yea but when I put the code block in, it took off the bold and break lines

42
Q: How to combine bold and "code sample" in Markdown?

MeysamHow can I make a word in a code sample bold? I only see asterisks around the expected bold text. sample **sample** sample

I didn't know how else to format it unless I should just take a snippet of the excel sheet and just put that in
@BeastlyGerbil Those weren't working for some reason ;_;

use <pre> and <b>

3:14 PM
Oh maybe it was the <b> instead of ** that would fix it
Eh ¯\_(ツ)_/¯ It's not like my answer is helpful anyway.. I'm kinda stuck

There you go

@dcfyj Thanks :)

Yeah, a <pre> tag would've been much faster lol

Now I know

Anyhow, as I said, not very "bold-y"
And knowing is half the battle. G I JOE!

3:17 PM
No it's not but the numbers are there which what is "important"
I can't help but think of the GI JOE meme videos

Sid
GamEN people..
The obvious guess for the CCCC seems to be of 9 letters too. Now, for the wordplay..

Hi Sid!

Sid
Superb puzzle, @Tech. Loved it.

Thanks @Sid and thanks to @GentlePurpleRain :)

@Techidiot For what?

3:28 PM
The idea @GentlePurpleRain

I think I'm missing something here. Idea for what? (sorry, still working on my first coffee here...)

Haha

I assume you mean the Lipogram idea?

@Techidiot Ah, now I understand. I hadn't yet seen that puzzle.

3:30 PM
@GentlePurpleRain I thought your Hearken CC was posted after watching it. Sorry

Well, they say that imitation is the sincerest form of flattery... ;)

Sid
@gentle you could probably give edit access to Mods or Room Owners for maintaining the archive.

I certainly could, but people need to volunteer and provide me their email address in order for me to add them.
Anyone who's interested in helping maintain the CCCC archive, send an email to gentlepurplerain2@gmail.com, and I'll set you up (assuming I've seen you around here enough to assume you're not a vandal...)

2? There was a 1?

Cue "I volunteer as tribute!" messages

3:33 PM
@dcfyj You'd be surprised...

(pin possibly, @GentlePurpleRain?)

Lol

@Techidiot grats on 10k!

Sid
Congrats @tech on 10k

China aromatic, @Techidiot!

3:39 PM
^ ^^ ^^^

@Mithrandir I'll pin it for a bit, but there are so many pins, there's not much room for anything else...

Not sure what's that. But thanks. Thanks all :)

@Techidiot background
My phone was being horrible that day o_o

Sid
Also, Stacksfiller's CCCC reminds me of a certain contact clue that I had prepared a while back and had forgotten about.

4:04 PM
@GentlePurpleRain: I love that cryptic clue!
@stacksfiller PRESIDE+NT

Sid
NT?

Yeah

bridge abbreviation for "no trump"

Sid
And preside as in the verb of "trump"?

4:31 PM
CCCC: Sears managed by department head embodied by drivel (6)

4:44 PM
Agh I thought I had the CC for once, I get what to do with it but not what the word is

Sid
Huh, my laptop just disintegrated.

Then how are you using it

It just... disintegrated?

Those systems integrators are doing a really bad job these days
Stuff just ... disintegrating

Ha... Ha ha...

4:49 PM
Are you sure that's the right word, @Sid?

Sid
Yeah, the inner parts just bulged out, now
@n_palum using phone

@Sid disintegration is more about crumbling to dust I think

It is

^

exploded might be valid

4:50 PM
Usually associated with fire or some sort of vaporization right?

Sid
Well... Yeah, didn't get the right word,then.
But, a part of the blame should be on me too..

Your battery just blew up?

Yeah, I just imagined your laptop literally crumbling as you type on it.

You might want to not have that sitting on anything flammable

But that's half the fun

4:52 PM
@Deusovi B(RAN)(D)S: RAN (managed) by D (department head) embodied by BS (drivel) = BRANDS (sears)

ahhhh.
I was trying to make DOCTOR work
"CTO" was leering at me
but Sears is just one brand

@GentlePurpleRain yep

CCCC: Waxes legs after complaints start (6)

@Rubio Think about it some more c;

oh. that.

4:54 PM
:D

Hi. I used to work at Sears, it's hard to unsee that

Ohh that's just mean!

Nice clue :)

Originally the clue was going to be "Sears' Kenmore and Craftsman, maybe (6)"

Tricksy one

4:54 PM
but I figured that'd be too easy to get on accident

Sid
@Rubio not really. Maybe, I exagerrated. The parts inside the laptop... They just came out.

@n_palum Thank you!

Hesitantly You're welcome xD

@Sid That sounds like a problem.
I generally like my laptop to be in one piece.

I generally like my desktop :P

4:58 PM
@Sid This is disintegration:

^

I don't remember that scene...

I was gunna poke fun at you referencing that movie because you have kids, but then I remembered I watched them too

lol

That image is somewhat hypnotic...

5:03 PM
^ I can't stop watching it

Sid
Well, OK, not disintegration

@GentlePurpleRain CCCC: C+LIMBS

Oh and Climbs being Waxes?

yup

Sid
I probably should have fixed that problem the first time it appeared.

5:11 PM
Ehh I guess climbs is increases

As in "grows". I figured it was that meaning, but couldn't find the actual word

same. It finally registered

Yeah it works I couldn't put my finger on it

@Rubio Correct.

CCCC: Tale teller turned tedious. (4)

5:15 PM
@Rubio DRAB
Bard<-

aye
I knew that'd be quick. hehe

Fancy

CCCC: F1 man with extreme lip (4)

@Sconibulus: That's HELP (F1, the help key) - HE + L[i]P.

@MOehm it is

5:21 PM
but F1 doesn't mean help! waahh! :)

Lol XD

Thanks.

I don't think I've ever actually used F1 to get help on anything, come to think of it

looking at that, I probably should have made the word Limp

I think lip and limp would both work

5:23 PM
Limp reads better, yeah

limp would maybe give a bit of misdirection

@Rubio Bleh, can't unpin on mobile.

Oh myyyy puzzling.stackexchange.com/questions/51093/… They are not letting this go

Or a construction with lap, though probably not "extreme". First and last lap?
CCCC: Naked, spare baker pets Green imitator (8)

Why is it so hard to grasp the concept of "pick the best answer"
As in the most specific answer that works

5:25 PM
@Rubio If you're referring to my thing, I have no idea

(I was)

Like there is being nit picky, but this seems a bit excessive

I think Nautilus likes to argue. :)
I have a standard comment I use when someone has added what is in essence a duplicate answer to a question. he did that, I did that, he sent me a comment (since deleted) basically saying "Why not add a duplicate answer, I've seen other people do it and sometimes you get away with it"

So far we've had 7 CCCCs today.

@Rubio He said that or you? And it isn't just one person

5:30 PM
If we go on at that pace, we'll have to resort to reruns of old ones soon.

After the fact he got all snippy and now thinks I have a personal vendetta against him because I keep tripping over his answers that add nothing to questions that already have accepted answers. Whatever

@MOehm Not if I finally get one! I have new ones :)

He said that to me, yeah. I was like, well obviously then you're just doing it to hopefully snag rep, so I called him out on that somewhere and he really didn't like that ;)

It's not even like he's trying to get rep, it's just comments
He's trying to poke holes in every single thing

On this one yeah

5:32 PM
@MOehm Oh, you caught the x? :-) Well, if you read each stanza, all of them speak about the missing letter :) In the case of a = b + c or c = d * x , its just an expression. The stanza already had letter "x" But, nice. I wanted to know the algorithm your brain follows ;)

Like maybe they should change the puzzle... It is from an online source, it isn't OPs.. like is that not obvious?

Just saying, elsewhere he tries for rep, gets called on it, and then gets all argumentative. Like I said. I think he likes tto argue.

@n_palum I was joking, of course. (Or trying to, rather.) All entries are recorded, so we don't get away with old ones.

Maybe that's just his thing.. Dunno but it's giving other people validation to comment similarly
@MOehm I know you were, as was I because the day I get one of these will be a miracle

New starts underscore endless friends', um, identity. (?)
(I don't think that actually works, but meh)

5:49 PM
@Techidiot You'll be disappointed by my brain. It was really just trying out some things that sprang to my mind and I got lucky with the lipogram. I hadn't noticed that the missing letter is the subject of the entry. (And I'm struggling to find the connection now. I can see eyes in the I paragraph, and north and soth, but no east and west in the first one, but that's it.)

Sid
6:00 PM
@Techidiot that is the complete answer? Just enigma?

6:17 PM
Whee! "You've earned the "Inquisitive" badge (Ask a well-received question on 30 separate days, and maintain a positive question record)."
Feels like I've asked a lot more questions than I obviously have hehe

They have to be well received, willingly

I've only had one score in the negatives. undeservedly, I thought, but whatever
@Deusovi You mind if I add a comment or two to your answer to my meta?

@Rubio Sure!

kk thanks

6:54 PM
@Sid Yeah thats it
@MOehm Yep right. The phrases didn't served as clues. It was just that I was trying to represent something about the missing letter. Like Mom, AM/PM for M, Great wall of china for G etc Nothing fancy as such

7:21 PM
Oehm's CC hurts my brain

I think I know the answer
S(PAR)E + ODIST(prolly angram of something) - PARODIST def (imitator)
Not sure how to get green fit in

that doesn't look particularly plausible

Hmm

@Techidiot: Not quite.

Naked spare fits well though

7:31 PM
It does, and gives me a pretty good indication of what's up
PARAKEET?

Nice

Yes, that's a good start.

nice!
(not merely a start, surely)
I mean, it seems clear that Sconibulus has seen how it works

That last post was an answer to Techidiot. @Sconibulus has it.

oh, I see

7:34 PM
Wha?

Keet? I am stuck with that. How that works? Curious

S(PAR)E B(AKE)R P(ET)S

Oh that's what naked means

def is Green imitator

Gotcha..

7:35 PM
Oh so all of them are naked. Nice

(Sorry about my posting lag. I'm a slow typist and the kettle was boiling.)

You both being into electrical I guess that was a knowledge stuff ;)

Yes, @Sconibulus, good explanation.

Oh that's a bird. Sorry
I assumed it to be some kind of circuit
I shouldn't have stopped stripping them :) Nice clue.

Lol

7:41 PM
Yes, you were on the right track with (s)PAR(e).

@MOehm For your deleted answer to hair dresser, you could have just used His Assistant ;) You were so close

I thought that ends referred to the last letters and so I assumed that it had to be two words. That ends can mean the first and last is a blind spot that I have. (But even so, I was too slow.)
It would be easy to think about it, though: We have this saying here that everything has an end except a sausage, which has two ends.

CCCC: Eve's genesis measures entropy and croaks (7)
oops, that should be (7)

Fixed it for you!

That's the eighth today, right? o_o

7:58 PM
@Mithrandir Depends on which part of earth you live ;)
For me, it must be 2nd of the day

@Techidiot it's currently 11 pm.

Oh the PSE time.
For me its 1.30 am

For Puzzling.SE it's... 8 pm or so?

That would be regular (not daylight-saving) Greenwich time. That makes sense.

Hmm..

Q: Thinking of O or 0 or O

Deepak MahulikarI am thinking of one thing. It is either an ellipse (shape), Or, it is the letter O Or, it is the number 0 You can ask me one question and guess what the thing is. I can only answer No,or sometime or always. So what is it?

1 hour later…
10:08 PM
Bobo's meta is really shaping up to look like grid deduction

10:19 PM
LONELY, STRAIGHT, B&W, and NOMOPHOBIA are what we have so far
The first three definitely seem like grid deduction things, but... nomophobia?

I'm taking it to be "Fear of being without a cell", i.e. every square needs to be in a cell (e.g. Fillomino)

Ahh. You and Boboquack are both Australian, right?
For me it's "cell phone" or just "phone", not "cell".

Yeah, it's "mobile phone" over here, so maybe I'm stretching it :P
("mobile phone" shows up when I look up "define: cell" on Google it seems though)

10:49 PM
Nomophobia ought to mean fear of rules.

11:02 PM
@Sconibulus the answer to your CCCC is RIBBITS (croaks) = RIB (Eve's genesis) + BITS (measures entropy, kinda). I have to confess I'm not fully convinced by "measures entropy" -> BITS (maybe it's actually measures -> BIT + entropy -> S, but that seems worse). I mean, one measures entropy in bits, yes, but BITS doesn't mean "measures entropy", does it?
