Q: Program Not Assigning User Input to Array Subscripts [Java]

BrodyNovice programmer here. My program is supposed to utilise a for loop in which the user would input a team name, and then four team members, and then it would go to the second loop. However when I run it, the team names are all set to 'team' and not what I write. For example I'd write: The Break...

1:36 PM
what

You mean the linux logo is wrong?
like, real wrong?

And the rainbow apple is no longer in use
At least they got Windows right

Oh wait right
(You would be mad if the Windows logo was the logo from Win 7, right?)
Mac currently uses a logo with 2 faces 1 with normal nose and 1 with squished nose

Nope, not anymore
It's a macOS in sans-serif font now

1:52 PM
Oh really? It changed yet again?

@TuxCopter where is this from

Also, look under 'Downloads' on the navbar
'Window' Why is this singular? 'Windows' is plural!

Oh I didn't noticed that
I mean how can someone fail on every OS?

> Publish Into Evernote and Post to Tumblr
Who even uses that?
Looks like a Korean company (probs a start-up)

1:59 PM
It is a Korean company
But being Korean don't forgive not knowing the logos of the most used OSs and even not knowing the name of the most used OS

Heck, Its image of Evernote is in Korean locale of Evernote
(Also, I can clearly say it's way worse than Atom)

@MatthewRoh They're Korean, it's normal

@TuxCopter Heh, if it is trying to be global it has to go through fixing these
(btw I'm Korean but that doesn't mean I do not blame Koreans)

@MatthewRoh TBH I didn't even noticed that Evernote in the screenshot ws in korean until you pointed it so ¯\_(ツ)_/¯

@TuxCopter no thats microsoft logo not windows

2:04 PM
@betseg no that is windows

The Windows logo is the same as Microsoft's

microsoft's have colors not full blue
and it's 2d(ish)

oh than its old windows logo

microsoft's is more similar to windows 8(.1)'s

yup the colored one is old windows logo (from 2012)

2:06 PM
btw can anyone look at my bio and install the userscript linked there to see magic

@fergusq In Röda, match("-","-") results in [-] but match("-","-+") gives []
It checks if the entire string matches the substring and not whether the substring is contained in the match (I don't know if that was intended or not)

Q: Abbreviate an array

Julian LachnietGoal: Given an array of strings, create abbreviated versions of each string. Specification: For this challenge, an abbreviation is the first N characters of a string. For the string abc: a, ab, and abc are all valid abbreviations, while bc, and ac are not. Given an array of strings, we want ...

@KritixiLithos suggestion: use "-"="-" for that and use that for substring checking

huh? What do you mean by "-"="-"?

btw could you look at my bio and follow the instructions, then see if a jsfiddle shows up instead of the bio?
@KritixiLithos nvm

2:21 PM
I guess I'll just use indexOf("-","-+") != -1

shrug
@KritixiLithos ^^^^
(I forgot to edit in time)

@MatthewRoh Doesn't work

@KritixiLithos Do you have the arguments in wrong order? The correct syntax is match(pattern, string). match("-+", "-") returns [-] as expected.

Yes, for example, match("-","+-+-+") results in an empty array

2:37 PM
Wait, I didn't read your messages. Is match(".*(-).*","-") what you want to do? "-+"=~".*-.*" returns a boolean value, and ["-+"]|search("-") returns the matches as strings.

I want to check whether the string (say '+-+-+') contains a minus

"+-+-+"=~".*-.*"

But thanks, the =~ trick works

@KritixiLithos Huh. It should work. What browser do you use?

Chrome

2:40 PM
Huh, weird.
It works on my laptop
Restart tampermonkey and refresh?

Actually ["-+"]|search("-") was closer to what I needed, but I think I'll just use indexOf("-","+-+-+") != -1
@MatthewRoh Oh, I don't have tampermonkey

@KritixiLithos Install it first then

@KritixiLithos Too many ways to do the thing?

(Or did you type it in console?)

@MatthewRoh Yes

2:45 PM
@KritixiLithos Huh. I'll try to update the code in the hastebin soon. btw you can copy the source in the other link and paste in console
Although tampermonkey is recommended

3:08 PM
Apple has been claiming their ipad pro is a computer and now they claim these are better than computers >_>

3:29 PM
@fergusq Is there a builtin to round/ceil/floor floats into ints?

Greetings :)

@KritixiLithos Currently only x//1, which floors x.

@ThomasWard o/

x//1+1 is a good approximation for ceil.

Ooh, pythonic division

3:36 PM
Python?
WHERE?

I've only seen double slash division in Python

ah, right :)
in other languages, there's usually a math.floor function somewhere
Python, you can just do it with pythonic floor division

Hah, python became an adjective

hello all

@KritixiLithos Does the tampermonkey one work?

3:44 PM
guys I needed some help regarding kamon api as I am monitoring akka actors

Go to SO

@Aamir Stack Overflow is what you need.

someone redirected me to here thatz y otherwise no intention
okay thanks anyways

@KritixiLithos // is for comments not division :/

In Ruby it's an empty regex

3:53 PM
@Downgoat In python // is division # is comments

@Downgoat Depends on the language, but in Python, // is floor division and # is comments
remember different languages have different syntax for the same things :)

>_< I know it is. I am saying it should be only used for comment not division

In Röda, // is division, # is array length, -- is decrement and ; is statement separator. So there are no line comments in Röda. Although they are probably not needed, as /*...*/ has been sufficient after I got used to it.

4:15 PM
@MatthewRoh I didn't get Tampermonkey yet

Ah, that's how you do output in APL on TIO

@DJMcMayhem you should seriously move to CA if you like climbing
At jtree right now
10/10 would recommend

@mınxomaτ Cool

@Riker idk, I've got a pretty great setup here too. I'm in the middle of town, but I can be Bouldering by a lake in like a 10 minute drive. :D
Are you bouldering or top-roping?

Good grief, there are some truly awful Overwatch players, aren't there? I mean, I am not a great player by any stretch, but seriously...
I played my first competitive matches last night. The one that stands out was Dorado, we were attacking, I was playing Tracer, and I had gold objective time with a whopping 25 seconds...

@AdmBorkBork Gosh, I wish I had that game.

It's really fun, just frustrating sometimes.

@DJMcMayhem both :D

@DJMcMayhem cute

My chinese keyboard is so bad that typing a backtick types a diacritic instead of a literal backtick

@MatthewRoh Lol
Riker seems to have left.
@flawr Hi

I would kms if a keyboard has only alt and a numpad

@MatthewRoh That would suck. You would need to have a lot of Unicode memorized.

@ckjbgames Yes, It sucks at the rate of: [Kill me]

6:12 PM
@ckjbgames I would just make a software utility to translate sequences of two keys to keystrokes.

@Mendeleev Sounds like a code golf challenge to me!

@Mendeleev Still you need to remember thousands of unicode making that.

:3612641I should make it

That is what happened to my Hangouts groupchat

@MatthewRoh no... it would just be 11 -> "a", 12 -> "b", etc. though probably not in that order
maybe chorded

6:13 PM
People kept spamming that sticker
@Mendeleev Maybe ASCII?

I have successfully virtualized my server!

@Mendeleev Probably, but it would take years

@Mendeleev Yay!

@MatthewRoh Why?
You would only need to translate numbers to letters, no special Unicode knowledge needed.

You could forget unicode for special characters

6:15 PM
Why would you need to know unicode??
wat

@MatthewRoh You could press <kbd>Alt</kbd> and then type a Unicode sequence.

(also Alt+numpad tends to take 2~2.5 times more on time than basic typing)
@ckjbgames Umm, do you have to ping me there?
not mendeleev?

@MatthewRoh Sorry.

@ckjbgames I know!!
And no, you couldn't. That does nothing.

@Mendeleev Ok

6:17 PM
btw what was the markdown for keys
kbd doesnt work

They don't work here

@MatthewRoh Bye, and good luck with your keyboard

@MatthewRoh bye

6:19 PM
@Mendeleev Neither do I
DJMcMayhem did tag some of his Github repositories as

It's tagged
@DJMcMayhem Only you know why
@DJMcMayhem I assume

@Riker Greetings

@ckjbgames Hahaha, it's from a game.

6:21 PM
@DJMcMayhem Tell me

@Riker might be able to say why

@Riker Pls tell all

@ckjbgames It's called Dr Langeskov, the tiger, and the terribly cursed emerald: A whirlwind heist
It's a fantastic game, I highly recommend it

@DJMcMayhem Where would I go for more info?

Steam. It's free btw

6:23 PM
Link me. I used to have an account, but I forgot the logins. ;-;
Gotta make a new one now

@DJMcMayhem Dr John Cena, the prowrestler, and the terribly cursed WWE Champion belt: A wrestling heist?

@MatthewRoh I'm laughing

6:46 PM
@WheatWizard where do I test Brain-Flak Classic?

Alright, I just need to test the code
I moved some parens right to make it closer to the code you posed - see my edit

@MistahFiggins Try this run with -C for Brain-Flak classic

6:49 PM
TIL not good idea to make phone ringtone fire alarm and leave phone unaccompanied >_<

@WheatWizard ...How do I do that? (sorry)

Do you have a clone of the Brain-Flak repository?

not yet

@WheatWizard oh nice!

Ok clone the repository with git clone https://github.com/DJMcMayhem/Brain-Flak.git

6:52 PM
On command line?

Do you have git?

Ok what OS are you on?

Windows 10

Oh boy
this is not going to be fun

6:55 PM
@WheatWizard IT HAVE YOU TRIED TURNING IT OFF AND ON AGAIN?

@MistahFiggins You should get git for windows. Its pretty hard to use but hopefully I can remember how it works and walk you through it.

Rosetta Stone wins the worst photoshop contest
come on, you couldn't even try to perspective transform the text?

@Mendeleev wow

It is perspective transformed

7:01 PM
That is a fail.

No, it's just rotated.

@Mendeleev Even worse
Lol

@WheatWizard gtg for now, will be back

@MistahFiggins See ya

@MistahFiggins Ok no problem.

7:02 PM
Anyways ... -1 for that UI that Chrome has on your platform

@JanDvorak how is it bad?

Apart from that notorious username leak... white text on white background? I guess the other buttons are to blame the OS for, but still...
The second line ... eh, decent

@JanDvorak you mean the top right corner?

Yes
The top left isn't my favorite but it can do

Also, my username on this site used to be Dmitry Kudriavtsev, usually I would censor the name.
ok...
@JanDvorak
ok, that kinda works

7:10 PM
it might be possible to blame the OS for the profile button style, but the fact remains that Google refuses to listen to user feedback that wants the button to go.

@JanDvorak I like the button.

O_o

I use it for multiple account (personal, school, business)

In that case, the button is useful - but Firefox puts it in the menu, and I think it's a better placement
Most people use their browser with just one account, though

Also, the button for guest mode is nice.

7:15 PM
So... Chrome for multi-user computers, Firefox for single-user ones?

no, just use chrome everywhere, it's faster
Actually, Safari's JS engine is insanely fast

I can't stand the Chrome dev team's PR approach...
How about Opera, which is basically Chrome with a different UI?

@JanDvorak I can't use all my extensions normally

Oh. I thought you could. I'm mostly interested in uBlock and *monkey, though. Do these exist for Opera?

Yes, I use a lot of QoL extensions though.
^ my Chrome menu with all extensions retracted

7:20 PM
O_o
I use 8, of which 4 are site-specific and probably could have been userscripts instead.
Speaking of userscripts, I use 11, of which 10 are for SE

reddit companion, ublock origin, the great discarder, google keep, mixmax, stylus, gnome shell integration, inbox by gmail (for share via email), reddit enhancement suite, https everywhere, honey (auto coupons), lazarus (form saving), markdown here, tampermonkey, dark reader, moderator toolbox for reddit, stop mod reposts (Minecraft mods), righttocopy, steam inventory helper, adfly skipper, data saver (Google compression proxy), h264ify (improves youtube streaming), MEGA, enhanced steam,
alientube, supersorter (bookmark sorter)

I use 3. uBlock, No mousewheel zoom, and Lastpass

Why lastpass? I prefer Firefox internal + KeePass

because I actually want my passwords on the cloud

@Mendeleev I don't even know what half of these do

7:26 PM
@NathanMerrill I just use Google sync + GOogle experimental password generator (enabled in chrome://flags)
@JanDvorak want a full explanation?

Three words per, CCA?

@Mendeleev I also use android and firefox

@JanDvorak cca?

circa = approximately

@NathanMerrill ok then.
Let me write one
Reddit companion: Top bar which provides info on reddit posts about this page
ublock origin: You know
The great discarder: Automatically discards (unloads) tabs to save memory
Google keep: Note taking, you can add notes and add pages to notes
Mixmax: Gmail/Inbox improvements, advanced editor, read receipts, etc.
Stylus: Custom stylesheets/CSS for pages
GNOME Shell integration: Allows to use extensions.gnome.org through chrome, and sync GNOME Shell extensions between computers.
Inbox by Gmail: Allows to share via email, also add to inbox.

7:38 PM
which subreddit are you moderating? :3

Nice. Discarder's functionality is exactly why I discarded Vivaldi - it kept unloading my tabs, then taking ages reloading them
Stylus sounds like the lesser known brother of Stylish, which I have lying around disabled.
Firefox saves form contents automatically, so I have no need for Lazarus

Stop mod reposts: Provides warnings when you are on a website that reposts Minecraft mods
RightToCopy: Stops webpages from blocking right clock/copy and paste
Steam Inventory Helper: Helps manage and sell Steam inventory.
Adfly skipper: Allows to bypass AdFly links.
Data Saver: Compression proxy that also compresses images. Does nothing on SSL pages (bad combo with HTTPS Everywhere)
h264ify: Makes YouTube stream H264 video instead of VP9. H264 can be natively decoded by the GPU, so this makes playback a lot smoother.

Dark mode sounds like something that I'd add for each site separately.

@JanDvorak Stylish does tracking now.
@JanDvorak This uses the native discarding functionality of Chrome, it reloads pages from cache so it's fast.
@JanDvorak This can also be toggled per site, it can also decolorize/sepia the page

@Mendeleev it kills stuff added by Javascript, though, doesn'ti t?

7:42 PM
@betseg /r/excgarated
@JanDvorak AFAIK no?
Chrome does this automatically if you have low RAM and too many tabs open. This just makes it happen after a certain time.

Shift+right click in Firefox bypasses the context menu Javascript handlers

@JanDvorak Stylus is a fork of Stylish from before the tracking code was added.

Oh, nice
My list is: BetterTTV (Twitch enhancements); Google Translator for Firefox (in the context menu); Greasemonkey; Hide unwanted results in Google Search (you know, w3s.*), ratings preview for Youtube, uBlock origin, websocket monitor (in dev tools), Youtube plus

@JanDvorak what is youtube plus? Also, what is w3s?

W3schools. I didn't want to say the name in full.

7:49 PM
Why though?

Youtube plus adds various features such as full-browser mode and the option to disable autoplay

> The development of YouTube Plus might cease when the new YouTube layout goes live.
nope

wait what new Youtube Layout?

Thanks. That doesn't impress me much.

8:08 PM
Why is one of my tabs using 700 MB?
WTF.

Perhaps you should unload it :-D

@JanDvorak It's my ESXi web console

O_o
