10:00 PM
According to litscape, there aren't any.
Although ANTACIDS seems strangely apropos.

I was looking specifically for 8-letter words. Your list still has one: ANTIFOAM
I think it's ANTIPHON.
"The carpenter" = ANT.
"Perhaps, had" means a homophone of "if" = IPH.
"no allergic" is an anagram of "no" = ON.
"Reaction" is the def.
Weak reasoning, perhaps...

Better than anything else we have.

That seems... very tenuous.

@Will Can you tell me whether the above is correct? (Probably not...)

10:09 PM
It's not
:(

@Deusovi I agree, but I'm lost for anything else.
@Will Throw us a bone?

@GentlePurpleRain I'm not really sure how this works! I've never used the discussion forum before! How do I find the cryptic clue you're working on?

@wildBillMunson Oh welcome to the chat!

@wildBillMunson The starred messages on the right. It's the one that starts with CCCC.

OK thanks! That makes sense!!

10:11 PM
We have a little game called "chat cryptic clue chains" - basically, whoever solves one clue in the chain starts the next one

Are you familiar with cryptic clues?

Are they similar to the NYT Sunday crossword puzzle clues?

Not quite.

No, they're what is sometimes called "British-style" crosswords.

Then perhaps not.

10:12 PM
I've written a guide to them here.

Q: Cryptic Clue Guide

Deusovi This post is not a puzzle. There is nothing puzzly hidden inside it or the self-answer, posted at the same time. What exactly is a cryptic crossword clue, and how do I write one?

Thanks!

They can be a bit intimidating at first, but they're really fun!

This chat game has initiated a lot of people into them (and spawned a number of puzzles on the site proper).

Sounds like fun to me!

@Will is sneakily ignoring every message asking for a hint... :(

10:18 PM
Let me know if anything in the guide is unclear!

Going AFK. Hope you all figure out this clue!

10:31 PM
I think I discovered the CCCC
but I need the construction

At this stage, I just want the answer. It's been extremely frusterating.

@TrojanByAccident What do you think it is?

IMMUNITY
'no allergic reaction'

Why do you think that's it?
I don't see how any parts of "immunity" can be derived from "the carpenter, perhaps, had"

just seemed to fit
but the construction doesn't fit

10:39 PM
btw for whoever was trying to find alternate meanings for 'perhaps': (carpenter, perhaps) would be needed to get to ant (or bee) - otherwise it'd be a naked definition by example which isn't good form
i was trying to find something 5 letters for "had no" (i.e. "lacked", but shorter) to pair with ant and get something meaning an allergic reaction, but got nowhere. But that's a possibility for that pesky "had no" in there.

@Rubio Yeah, I was playing with lacked for a while too.
Perhaps time to rethink "The Carpenter"
Jesus, Joseph.
Karen

Karen?

John
Karen Carpenter. Singer
Member of "The Carpenters"
Other member was Richard
Rickless would fit the construction,
But it has no meaning.
Gotta run!

Can we vote to take CCCC power away from Will? :P

False. "Rickless" means that Rick Astley did, in fact, run around and desert you.

@Deusovi I second the motion.
The motion has been proposed and seconded. I move for a vote.
