Jim
1:34 AM
I'm not yet in the New Year, but Happy Happy
Someone get me a carbonless diamond ASAP!

This is the funniest comment you will see in this chat room today. It's so funny you feel obligated to star it.

Assembling = AMASSING = A + MASS IN G (piece of Schubert's)

wow
Well done, I was nowhere near that

Came quite quickly once I took a leap of faith that assembling was the def
but thanks
so I have to do one?

I was almost convinced it was a double def, BUILDING, and one piece of Schubert's theatre. unfortunately the theater is Shuberts.

@NeilW Nice! Yes, your turn now ;-)

Jim
4:43 AM
If I ever solve another cccc we're getting a carbonless clue.

lol

Jim
Busy playing Pandemic right now tho. Anyone ever play?

not particularly clever, but seasonal: CCCC: Actor left right before new year (9)

I need to find an excuse to work "shaved ice" into a cccc

4:56 AM
@Rubio You here? Can you just pin the CCCC? edit : ah ok

done

5:11 AM
PORTRAYER: Actor (def) = Left (PORT) right (R) {before} (new year)->AYER

Well done, that's it @Rubio

Probably my final CCCC of 2016 (for me anyway), brought to you by comicskingdom.com/zippy-the-pinhead
CCCC: ZIPPY EVENLY SHARPENS SOME EDGE DEVICES. (7)
imagine that in Comic Sans. ;)

5:36 AM
I wanna say you're getting at STYLISH but honestly I am perplexed

I think I've got it, but there seems a slight superabundance of clue.
Or is it a red herring?
Not sure how to format in here.
zIpPy evenly (IP) + sharpens some edge (HONES) = IPHONES = devices

Sid
5:53 AM
Happy new Year all... (If it isn't new year at your time zone, read this message when it is.)

Ha, I had the exact same idea of doing cryptic rebuses just yesterday

It is IPHONES. good job.

Q: Cryptic Rebuses

SilenusA cryptic rebus, so says I, is a rebus that has the form of a cryptic clue. That is to say, there are two parts to a cryptic rebus: a definition of the answer a subsidiary indicator of the answer. A definition can take the form of a picture which straightforwardly represents the answer, or it...

I got HONES just from SHARPENS, so SOME EDGE was left over, but the Edge is a Samsung. I got confused.

6:10 AM
EDGE is capitalized on purpose. It's an EDGE network device.

That's over my head I'm afraid.
CCCC: NEW YEARS'S EVE, WHIP THUG INTO SHAPE AS BOXER. (5,11)

7:01 AM
Hey, just thought I'd say Happy (late(2 hours late for me anyway)) New Year! #2017

7:12 AM
Happy New Year to all the denizens of The Sphinx's Lair and of Puzzling Stack Exchange!! Have a wonderfully puzzling 2017!

Happy new year to everyone!!!!!

Q: What is my name?

EnigmaI ran on the oars, being a sacred man, but was tormented to death by Saddam. One associative friend reached fame, with carrot and stick, another was shot dead on the street. What is my name?

2 hours later…
10:57 AM
@NeilW SUPER HEAVYWEIGHT (anagram (new) of YEARS'S EVE WHIP THUG, def=SHAPE AS BOXER).

Nice!

CCCC: Willy consumes liquor with extremely soft piece of chicken (9)
Let's hope it's not too bad
That reminds me, anyone checked out Paul's recent crossword? Here's a clue i loved: "Tycoon requiring a wig, lacking leadership: a word of caution about this arse (6,5)"
(you can guess the answer)

11:13 AM
@Ankoganit oh.

@Volatility got it?

Yes, I do...
DRUMSTICK: D(RUM+ST)ICK

excellent

I got that "Willy" referred to that particular appendage immediately, though I hadn't thought it would clue that particular word for it

Hope that wasn't awful >.<
Couldn't resist
:D

11:20 AM
The surface reading is quite nice :)

thanks :)

11:40 AM
Okay, that one's pretty funny.

ha ha :P I like that one

Nice surface reading too.
@Volatility Still coming up with a clue?

Yes

I wonder how long the CCCC will go on for... Hopefully quite a while

Google isn't giving me synonyms conducive to a good surface reading -.-

11:45 AM
Probably! We could always move it into a different room if it gets too spammy, too.
I know that feeling. :/
A joke-y clue relating to a recent meme here: "That's a carbonless diamond! (2)"

haha
CCCC: Fuel has a cost that's huge (8)

So true ^

@Deusovi work your RO magic :P

I had a similar clue, but going the other way round: "Perhaps that's nothing? (10,7)"
I suppose though that's it's rather too broad if you don't already know the meme

11:51 AM
Ha, nice.
Sure it's 8 and not 7? I have a 7-letter answer that seems vaguely workable
(but probably isn't correct)

It's 8

Got it!
CO(LOSS)AL
Very nice clue!

Yep, thanks!

Ahh I looked at that!
I was looking to see if ossal was a word though!

CCCC: I eat after fantastic lover (6)

11:55 AM
@BeastlyGerbil lol

You had that prepared didn't you @Deusovi? :P

Yep, came up with it a few hours ago
I have a stockpile. :P

Grapple new yeast!

...What?

1:34 PM
@Deusovi Is it JULIET? I eat(IET) after fantastic(Jewel sounds like JUL) -> JULIET (Lover def)

@Techidiot Nope - that would require two homophone indicators. Plus, "fantastic -> jewel" isn't allowed because they aren't the same part of speech.

Q: Kitty's New Mission

Kit-GinevraA new year and a new mission for Kitty. Having successfully located for the bomb on the previous mission, Kitty is on the next level of training and is delighted to see conditions have improved considerably. This time she's in a rather nice hotel room and now she knows where she is as there is ...

@Deusovi IODINE (I) = DINE (eat) after IO (fantastic lover)

3:22 PM
@Sp3000 Bingo!

I should also say you had me playing Danganronpa all day today. For some reason my friends were joining in so it went for way longer than I'd anticipated

Ha, what did you think?

Some gameplay choices were a little odd but overall pretty interesting. It's rare to see something present all the facts and be solvable before the trial even begins, even though it does make you feel like the protagonist is a blockhead at times :P

Yeah, definitely. I've heard it criticized for being too easy, but I didn't mind it.
And "a little odd but overall pretty interesting" is honestly a pretty accurate description of the game.

I was thinking yeah it's too easy and the plot's too guessable, but then I thought twice about it and I kind of like it because of that, since it means the clues presented are fair
If I had to throw any part out it'd probably be the rhythm sections though - constant on the beat is not that amusing :P

3:30 PM
Yeah... I don't really get the minigames either. Weird design choice.

Sid
@Sp3000 how is fantastic lover IO?

Think mythology

Yep. "Fantastic" as in "of fantasy", not "great".

Sid
I still don't get it..

In terms of minigames, Nonstop/Closing > Hangman >>> Bullet Time Battle
I like closing because summaries are always nice

Sid
Oh, I hadn't heard about her..

Neither, but I knew about Io the moon and basically half the solar system is named after mythology, so I figured it was probably that and looked it up to check :P

Yeah, I was relying on that to make it solvable. My backup method of cluing was I/O in computer science as an abbreviation for input/output, but I thought this surface reading was nice

It does make you wonder why they're taking turns eating ahaha :P

Sid
Now, When I look back at it, so. I is the def. Clever..

3:53 PM
That feeling when you come up with an easy clue and realise it's probably been overdone to the point that it's Googlable
CCCC: Could be a landlord? (6)

@Sp3000 LEASER?

Not quite - I think that would be a little too straight as an answer?

Q: Another puzzle on the properties of the prime 2017

wythagoras$2017$ is the first prime that satisfies the following three conditions: $p$ can be written as $a^2+21b^2$ for integers $a,b$; in this case, $2017=41^2+21\cdot 4^2$. $p$ can be written as $c^2+24d^2$ for integers $c,d$; in this case, $2017=29^2+24\cdot 7^2$. $p$ satisfies the following modula...

4:50 PM
@Sp3000 LETTER? :)

@Techidiot How do you get that?

Yep

Ahhh, I see now. Clever.
(Double def: first "could be 'a'", second "landlord")

Yeah. Clever clue indeed!

Alright @Techidiot, your turn

5:07 PM
CCCC: More or less between two eyes it tracks a cell(4)

well for the first bit nose is obvious

NOSE would work if "cell" meant "smell", but that wouldn't make sense...

Nope

There aren't any unclued homophones, are there?

Eeps.. CCCC: More or less between two eyes sounds like it tracks a cell(4)

Sid
5:58 PM
@Techidiot is it ISIS? two eyes- i,i. More or less= So so.. perhaps tracks a cell means land in prison?
Although, my gut says that track a cell means tracking a cell phone.

Nope. Sorry

Sid
Is anything right at least?

They are just 4 letters. Any more clues will serve as spoilers :) Let me wait a little more

6:13 PM
@Deusovi If you are here, do you think creating a new tag of Cryptic rebus is a good idea? Considering we got a new question based on it and it was pretty fine.

6:54 PM
@Sid No. We don't need a tag for every question.

Q: A somewhat tricky riddle

Iry-HorWhat is it, What is it, that can't die, but is not immortal, cannot live, but is not dead, can live in the shadows, but when cast in the light, dies of shame, must be left alone, but sometimes is needed to survive?

Should there be a "Best of 2016 Q4" post?
I would think so, but the 2016 Puzzle of the Year question was downvoted quite a bit, so I am hesitating to post it.

@wythagoras Hey, read this :-)
If you didn't already do, of course

@IAmInPLS Technically, in SE terms, a post is a question or an answer, and that is not a question nor an answer.
(If I didn't misunderstood your message)

9:25 PM
So why not one for 2016
The 2016 Puzzle of the year is beng downvoted because of (or thanks to) this answer :meta.puzzling.stackexchange.com/a/4489/25957
But that concerns the Puzzle of the Year, not the Quarterly Besst of

@wythagoras Yes; done.
Meta Sphinx should bring it presently.

hey @Randal'Thor - feels like it's been forever.

@Rubio Yeah, I haven't been online much in the last few weeks.
Better things to do, you know ;-)

It happens ;)

Congrats on your ROship, by the way - not sure if I've seen you since then.

Thanks - and yeah I don't think you've been around since that happened

Those view counts just keep on ticking up while we aren't looking.
Curiously, my two most-viewed questions on PSE both begin with the word "Five".
This being the other one (and I've no idea how that got so many views either - maybe the generic-sounding title?)
