6:00 PM
what would Kirchhoff do?

@AccidentalFourierTransform So much love for your avatar

weird redrawing says they are in series

@G.Bergeron thanks, err..., same to you? :-P

oh got it got it got it

user253310
@ArmaGeddON well they are indeed in series

user253310
6:01 PM
good

@AccidentalFourierTransform Yeah, the most unoriginal one I can have
@BernardoMeurer By the way, you are right, Arrival was shitty!

Thanks @Doraemonドラえもん, @ACuriousMind and @JohnRennie
i have more problem but i think with this little knowledge i must try them again
will get back if outta my league :)

@G.Bergeron Give us a chance to surprise you ;) High-level questions are somewhat rare so it's difficult to really assess how many people could actually answer them, I think some of them are just unlucky that the people able to answer them never see them.

@ACuriousMind I will

@G.Bergeron Hello Sir :-) May I ask you a question?

6:05 PM
@SwapnilDas what

Counterquestion: why would you assume a "Sir" for the name "G. Bergeron"?

@G.Bergeron What exactly is mathematical physics?

@ACuriousMind ...after I'm done playing with deRham cohomology

@ACuriousMind 'Sir' for an Indian means ' a respected (scholarly?) male'

@SwapnilDas Hmm... I'd say the study of possible physical models/theories using mathematics

6:07 PM
@G.Bergeron So doesn't any other kinda physics use mathematics?

@SwapnilDas Yeah, so what about the name is uniquely male?

@SwapnilDas Yes, but not necessarily at the same level of rigor
We are halfway between math and physics.

@G.Bergeron Oh, so things go rigorous in MP, right?
@ACuriousMind I didn't get you, care to elaborate?

@SwapnilDas They are in physics too! It's just usually not at the level common in mathematical community.

Slightly below that, then?

6:10 PM
@SwapnilDas For instance, some people are trying to construct a useful axiomatic framework for QFT

Yeah, getting it. Now, is it math/physics?

But that doesn't mean people can't use QFT to calculate things now

Ah Ic.

@SwapnilDas Yeah somewhat, it's like physically inspired mathematics

So it is a branch of mathematics?

6:11 PM
I am working mainly on integrability

Or.. Hard to define.

@SwapnilDas Not really, you use all the branches of mathematics, if pertinent.

@SwapnilDas My point is that you don't know whether the person you're talking to is male. Some people take offense when you make assumptions like that, e.g. a woman might well be offended if you address her as "Sir" in this fashion.

@G.Bergeron Ohk, so physics then?
@ACuriousMind I got it. Well, I sensed a male, can't you?

@SwapnilDas Yes, but in the end it will depend who you ask

6:13 PM
@SwapnilDas not at all actually :-/

@SwapnilDas No, I'm afraid I don't have psychic powers to determine the gender of people I'm talking to on the internet.
6

Wait, three mentions at a time make me..
@AccidentalFourierTransform Hey :) What are you referring to?
@ACuriousMind See his profile, you'll have.

you last comment before mine

Oh, same reply then.

@SwapnilDas Not a single indication of gender there either.

6:16 PM
@ACuriousMind I'll let you go through my thoughts, ok?
1. What's the area he's specializing in?
- Mathematical Physics.
90% assurity he's a male.

@SwapnilDas you are being surprisingly rude right now...

Stereotyping like that is precisely why people get offended about such assumptions.

How so?
Umm.. That was not my intention.
Well, did I actually go wrong?

I bet that was not your intention, but people are telling you that assuming someone's gender because of their career choices is very disrespectful, and you don't seem to get it

I get it now.
I'm sorry @AccidentalFourierTransform @ACuriousMind
<if that hurts anyone, very sorry.>

6:21 PM
apologies accepted

@SwapnilDas In any case, no offence taken, I am a male, but that is irrelevant to their point.

@G.Bergeron :)
@AccidentalFourierTransform Thanks :)
Well, such stereotypes do 'fundamentally detectably' exist in everyone's minds, but get refined with experiences, I believe :)

@SwapnilDas It's fine, I believe you meant no harm. It's just that "physics is for men" and especially "Difficult theory/mathematics is for men" are such pervasive and damaging stereotypes that I feel the need to point them out.

You are right. I'll join you in future :)

Does any one know how to turn off Dropbox automatic caching? It's clogging my limited research disk quota and I need to purge it everyday!!! >8(

6:24 PM
@G.Bergeron You can choose which folders, if at all, should be synchronised in the settings
If you untick all folders, it won'T download anything automatically

@ACuriousMind I do but it tries to cache all the rest in .dropbox.cache in case I might choose to synch them

@G.Bergeron oh
That seems...stupid :D

Connect the ethernet to the second port of your IP, and then reset the ping. This will boost the portability of the BIOS

On a normal computer, you don't notice the hard drive space eaten, but at work we are on a networked unix environment with only 500 MB of safeguarded space

@ACuriousMind Sorry, I'm also a curious mind:P Would you mind telling after how many years you are getting your Dr. Title?

6:27 PM

Wheatstone bridge?

For research material only it is fine, as you can put garbage in a nobackup home. The point is that dropbox WANTS to be on your home folder on unix, at least.

My answer is 2 but answer key says 18/5

@SwapnilDas The usual time is somewhere between 3-5 years, I think, but I'm currently still a master's student, not a PhD candidate, if you're asking about me specifically.

just use a correction factor there

6:28 PM
It is 18/5 @ArmaGeddON

but but but

@ACuriousMind Thanks :)

listen what i did

Sure.

@G.Bergeron Can you choose the location of the cache? I hear dev/null is an excellent place for it

6:29 PM
@ArmaGeddON If you write down explicitly all the equations it should never fail.

Although then you might get Dropbox continuously downloading stuff to dev/null/...

R1 and R2 and in series and so are R4 and R5 and finally (R1,R2), R3. (R4,R5) in || which gives 2

user253310
@ArmaGeddON It is a Wheatstone bridge

user253310
A Wheatstone bridge is an electrical circuit used to measure an unknown electrical resistance by balancing two legs of a bridge circuit, one leg of which includes the unknown component. The primary benefit of a wheatstone bridge is its ability to provide extremely accurate measurements (in contrast with something like a simple voltage divider). Its operation is similar to the original potentiometer. The Wheatstone bridge was invented by Samuel Hunter Christie in 1833 and improved and popularized by Sir Charles Wheatstone in 1843. One of the Wheatstone bridge's initial uses was for the purpose of...

@G.Bergeron explicitly?

6:31 PM
@ArmaGeddON R1 and R2 are not in series, I believe.

@ACuriousMind It seems not, it creates it in the dropbox folder. In any case I don't want it syncing personal stuff, even in the cache

user253310
@ArmaGeddON You can remove the 5 ohm resistor as no current flows through it

lol cmon they even have names!!

R3, ok?

@ArmaGeddON Well don't try to be witty at first...

6:32 PM
@Doraemonドラえもん I wonder why?

@ArmaGeddON Current divides at the junction of R1 and R2, doesn't it? :)

user253310
@ArmaGeddON Do you know what a wheatstone bridge is? If not, go and learn it first

user253310
I am avoiding kirchoff's laws since you are new to this topic

@Doraemonドラえもん Why?

@SwapnilDas current continues to R3 after it R2 so..

6:34 PM
rm -R .dropbox.cache/* This is now my daily morning ritual

@G.Bergeron Googling leads me to believe you can't turn off or limit the dropbox cache

@ACuriousMind I know... -_-

@ArmaGeddON Oh, I understand your feelings. Please refer to the wiki article on Wheatstone bridge.

user253310
@G.Bergeron First it is better to let Arma.. to solve it analytically without Kirchoff's laws. It will help him/her develop intution.

m on it

6:35 PM
It is really useful to sync research with all my devices though, so I still want to continue using it
@Doraemonドラえもん Isn't it the same in the end?

Same means equations?

@SwapnilDas In a way yes.

i wonder "Kirchoff" is fast and help me in solving these problems quickly in my competitive exam?

user253310
@G.Bergeron Well, I learnt Kirchoff's law much later. Wheatstone bridges can be understood without Kirchoff's laws also....

@ArmaGeddON Yes, of course. But that is a standard textbook set of laws.

6:38 PM
I would compute the equivalent resistance from A -> D then A -> E to finally add the last 2 series resistances.
Then again, I never really used Kirchoff's laws because of all the electronics I did in high school...

I would have forgotten all of resistances after 5 years or so. I hate engineering!
@ArmaGeddON Out of curiosity, which exam are you going to appear?

user253310
@SwapnilDas Well, how do you hate a course without even before joining it ? :P

@SwapnilDas FTRE(Fiitjee Talent Reward Examination)

Lol.

@SwapnilDas Building actual stuff is fun!

6:42 PM
You are an Indian?

user253310
@ArmaGeddON i guessed it right!!!!!!!!

yes i am

user253310
From the questions you were asking i was sure that you are Indian

user253310
:P

@G.Bergeron Not to me, I'm old.
@Doraemonドラえもん My first suspect was that :P

6:43 PM
well i can also tell that u are either Chinese or Japanese :)

user253310
@ArmaGeddON Wrong :P

Bingo! You failed :p

He's a JEE Prepping Indian.

lol

user253310

And I'm also a hopeless Indian lol.

which coaching u take btw?

user253310
I can guess your class also

Kinda. I am enrolled in FIITJEE, though i drop a lot of classes.
9
^^

user253310
6:45 PM
Class 10 most probably @ArmaGeddON

(My guess)

Right 10, @SwapnilDas they don't teach electricity in IX

@ArmaGeddON I thought you donno Wheatstone bcoz you are in 9, lol.

I missed Big Bang, greatest mistake of my life

I'm in 10, too. Hi 5!
I gave Big Bang in 9th and got a huge discount. (60k for three program)

6:47 PM
really wheatstone in 10 Class!???
all they teach in X class is

Oh Ik. Lol.

user253310
Wheatstone bridge is in 10 th syllabus

I thought you study higher, anyway.

user253310
:)

(For JEE prepping students)

6:48 PM
it isn't even in S. Chand.

Lol.

neither in Cordova

Please don't refer those books.

i just read these 3 books for exams NCERT, S. Chand, Cordova

Sheer wastage of time and money, and energy of course.

6:49 PM
Cordova has nice numericals

@ArmaGeddON DC Pandey?

now thats too much :p

Nah man.
Do only DC Pandey. Enough for the least.

i usually don't get much time outta clash of clans to do DC Pandey

lol. The usual COC addict.
HC Verma for the win (atleast)?

6:51 PM
m a big one :)
10 Clash of Clans accounts

god.

m studying from ncert, S.Chand, and Fiitjee modules for FTRE is that enough?
think not

user253310
@ArmaGeddON For FTRE just Fiitjee modules are enough. There is an IQ test also

Yes.
Enough, just enough.

yup i've prepared logical reasoning
just 2-3 concepts left

6:53 PM
Great. How much in NTSE?

user253310
And in FTRE almost everybody is given admission :P

calendar and 1 more

(MAT)

i didn't go for NTSE, actually i was a nerd a that time

user253310
@ArmaGeddON Which city are you in ?

6:54 PM
Meerut
unfortunately i could not get all Fiitjee modules

I scored like 11/50 in NTSE mock tests (MAT)

not bad :p

:P
Did better in NTSE, though.

Fiitjee introduced 5 new chapters in FTRE from this year onwards :(

@ArmaGeddON Guess how much (think practically)?

6:57 PM
50/50 ?

Think practically :P

36 / 50 ?

Got a 47.

--_--
"o"
really good

Can't tell it is improvement. A week before, I wasn't rly able to solve 2,9,28,?

6:59 PM
tell me the common name of pentanone in 5 seconds

What is that?

I don't know a hell of chemistry.

47? are u kiding me?
