re propoduct-spaces: my concern is somewhat different. A question "For fin dim vector spaces, show that dim V x W is dim V + dim W" is also a question about product spaces. I do not think the tag should be used. The wiki allows it though. Maybe the "for example" should be changed, and tag be actually restricted to top and measure theory (conceived broadly).
I am looking at questions which have this tag and are not from topology or measure theory. It seems reasonable to look for them among questions without general-topology or measure-theory tag.
There might be a few questions among those search results which would probably deserve adding general-topology tag.
There are some questions which are either mistagged or use the tag instead of (currently non-existent) .
There are questions about various products of normed spaces. Would we want such questions in tag?
There are some questions about products of metric spaces.
There are questions about products of manifolds.
I am not entirely sure, but I guess this one use (product-topology) tag simply in place of (cartesian-product).
And I was about to add (general-topology) to this question:
But I see in the revision history that it was removed and there is also this comment:
Note that your question is not really related to the topology. Your $W$ is definitely a counterexample, no matter what the topology is. — John Ma Nov 14 '15 at 4:40
I am aware that there might be many other questions which are far from topology and measure theory in tag. Looking at the above questions - i.e., the questions which have tag but neither nor - was just to get a rough idea what other questions are currently using this tag.
Again, I did not check all questions in tag, but since there are no questions tagged either product-space+linear-algebra or product-space+vector-spaces, it seem likely that currently there are not that many questions about products of vector spaces in that tag.
@quid If we decide to clarify usage of tag, we should decide, for example, whether product of normed spaces or products of metric spaces belong there. (It might be bit of a stretch, but basically they can be still considered product topology.)
But that is probably discussion for later. It might be worth separate meta question.
That optimization vs. maxima stuff is more important - it will affect more questions if it is changed. But since we discussed and in the comment here, I thought it was worth having at least a cursory look at the questions in that tag and what other areas they come from.

@M.G I see that you have created (wiener-algebra) tag. It might be useful to create also tag-wiki or at least tag-excerpt. It might help other users to use the tag correctly. (This is probably not a problem here, since the tag name seems to be descriptive enough.) Another reason is that the tags used on only one question are automatically deleted after certain time unless they have tag-wiki. — Martin Sleziak 1 hour ago
In mathematics, the Wiener algebra, named after Norbert Wiener and usually denoted by A(T), is the space of absolutely convergent Fourier series. Here T denotes the circle group. == Banach algebra structure == The norm of a function f ∈ A(T) is given by ∥ f ∥ = ∑ n = − ∞ ∞ | f ^ ( n...

It could be made a synonym of functions... But that tag is already so misused I'd rather not guide any more traffic in its direction. — barto Sep 17 at 16:59
@barto I do not like idea of the synonym (variables) $\to$ (functions). They are two different things. And we would put two tags with rather unclear usage together. — Martin Sleziak 1 min ago

This discussion somewhat digress to possibility of (cardinal-functions) tag. The consensus seems to be that it is not needed, but I will copy the comments here anyway for future reference.
I would caution, however, against a [cardinal-functions] tag. As much as I would have been happy to see one, it will be wildly misused by people asking about cardinal arithmetic and the likes of it. — Asaf Karagila yesterday
This answer actually does not suggest creating (cardinal-functions) tag. If such tag is ever considered, I would expect name like (cardinal-functions-topology) somehow shortened to fit the 25 characters limit. But this is for another discussion, if the need for such tag arises in the future. — Martin Sleziak yesterday
@Martin: In the abstract a cardinal functions tag is a good one, but there’s no evidence that we actually need it. There have been a few questions that would definitely have fallen under it, but only a few. If it ever is needed, it should probably apply both to topology and to Boolean algebra: Don Monk has a couple of books on cardinal functions on Boolean algebras, and a lot of them correspond closely to the topological functions. — Brian M. Scott 13 hours ago
The tag can be safely removed from this question, right?

Q: Good way to learn Ramsey Theory

Jorge Fernández HidalgoWhat are some good books on Ramsey theory? I have Van Lints book on Combinatorics: is this enough preparation to start reading about Ramsey theory? I want a book that includes important results and has good proofs.

After I added to my post the information that the (variables) tag has been previously discussed in a now deleted posts, the bump was enough to get it from score 2 to score 4.
So I guess it is enough to be considered consensus and start removing .

@MartinSleziak I'd just slightly rewrite the wiki. Yes, metric and normed can go there. I think the point is that the "space" should be stressed, that is it should be somehow toplogical or metric.
@MartinSleziak yes, this tag should certainly be removed.

@quid You mean that it's not needed to go through "committee" and to post on meta about it.
Re: somehow topological or metric. But you would probably keep measure spaces, as the current tag-wiki suggests, right? Or do you prefer to keep them separate?

@MartinSleziak affirmative. I see no need for extended discussion. The minimal "solution" would be to replace "for example" by "and similar" or something like this. But one might find a better formulation.

Ok. Since it seems that it is how the tag is currently being used, anyway. Perhaps it is the best way to go.
If somebody has issue with the change, it is likely that they raise it on meta or elsewhere.
I have changed the tag-excerpt to: "For questions about the structure of product space, in the context of topology (including metric and normed spaces) or measure theory. Use other tags to indicate the context."
If you have time to improve wording, go ahead. And if not, some of us can get to it later. (And there is a chance that someone else does it.)

Thanks! In the interim I retagged some variables question. I'll leave for now.

[metat-tag:specific-question] Since we are in the proces of removing variables tag - what would be good tags for this question: Is there such a thing as 2.3 variables??

@quid About your recent edit. Is there some reason not to retag closed questions?
I believe tag-edits do not put them into reopen review queue. And if the questions are closed for longer than 5 days, then no edit puts into into the review queue. Which edits push closed questions to the reopen review queue?

@MartinSleziak How many tags are there on this site? I see like 47-49 pages of multiple columns per page of tags. When does creating too many tags become unhelpful?

@amWhy Some of those pages are just synonyms.
But I agree that site has grown enough so that probably not too many new tags are really needed.
However, if you look at list of new tags, still lost of them are created.

Okay...I just spend a bunch of time comparing numbers of posts containing "urn" as opposed to "bins"...(motivated by recent meta discussion.)
And tried honing in on "material conditional", implication (searching for hits). (I even checked "pink (elephant), pigs, and unicorns" and got more hits than many tags here.
My biggest issue with the recent meta question, is that it would justify the tags for pink elephant posts, unicorn posts, red balls, blue balls....Any way, it got me thinking about how many tags there are...etc.

Which recent meta question do you mean?

The one about creating a tag "urn".

6:22 PM
Maybe it has to do with the fact that I am not a native speaker, but I have very hard time understanding what you are talking about.

Yes! That one.

Well, one thing is that the post you mention got a lots of downvotes, so people probably do not want that tag.
Another thing is that I do not think that comparison with unicorns and elephants is a good one. For example, we mention stars and bars in questions about combinatorics not because it counts stars, but because it is name of a method in combinatorics.

That's good. Anyway, I mainly wanted to check into the number of tags.

@MartinSleziak it still bumps them to the frontpage in active view. I just do not see the point in retagging questions that should be deleted anyway (some will even be auto deleted soon). That is, I am not against retagging closed questions, but against questions that should be deleted. (Also I am not really against it, I just think the other course of action is more reasonable.)

@quid Personally I think that we will wait quite long before they get deleted.
Retagging would get rid of the tag faster.
But since the tag was here since September, if not longer, it probably does not matter too much.
Now it went down from 25 to 5 in one day.

6:28 PM
@MartinSleziak why? You cast a vote, I cast a vote. And maybe @amWhy will help us out. So that's three. Except if you are against deleting one of them. Then just retag it and take it of the list.

@quid touche!

@quid Are you sure all of them are worth deleting. (I do not want to spend much time looking into those posts, but I will take your word for it.)

@MartinSleziak I'm game for joining in the deletion campaign...Of course, there is room for "vetos" in cases where there anything meriting rescue.

@MartinSleziak three of the five will/would be autodeleted

@quid There are only $5$?

6:32 PM
This one is only prevented from auto del by an accept

Q: 3 variables x,y,z randomly generate an integer in a specific range. z increases the range of integers that y can generate. Chances of y > x?

Rifle D. LuffyI hit the character limit on the title, let me explain the question. Here are my 3 variables. They are called $x,y$ and $z$. x can generate an integer from $0$ to $100$ y can generate an integer from $0$ to $100 + 5(z)$ z can generate an integer from $0$ to $3$ What is the probability of $y$...

@amWhy yes, only five are left. the rest was retagged.

Q: Is a variable a rational or irrational number?

bjskistadI asked this question in my math class, but what is a variable, an irrational number or a rational number?

Maybe one could preserve it. But then not that much seems lost either.

second question is now deleted...first you posted needs only 1 delete vote after I voted to delete.

All gone.

I've retagged The complementary cumulative distribution function (CDF). It only has two delete votes.
BTW what happens if somebody undeletes one of those question? Is the tag recreated? Probably yes.

Yes, I'd assume it's recreated.

@MartinSleziak done

6:40 PM
I have retagged at least those linked here. Just in case. (Not that undelete is too likely.)
The one already deleted would be more difficult to find.
So 4 out of 5 have been also retagged.

@MartinSleziak Just checked it...deleted.

Yes, I know. But I have removed the tag as well.

Learning that deleted posts can have tags edited. Is the same true for closed questions: editing a tag through the "edit tag"?
...without sending it to the "top of the page" of questions?

Editing anything bumps the question.
User cannot edit their own deleted question, but they can edit their answers. I believe that other users can edit deleted posts. (That is if they can see them.)
IIRC even editing deleted answer bumps the question.
The fifth one was What are the different types of variables and constants in mathematics?. It seems that I often have too many tabs open.

6:59 PM
What does it mean when there's too many tabs open?

I opened in one tab the list of remaining questions with (variables) tag. Then I did not use that tab for some time. If I refreshed it, I would see empty list of questions. But this way I still saw the status before the deletions started.

7:16 PM
Yeah...I know what tabs in a browser are in that sense...have too many open, myself! I missed that you referring to your tabs in your browser. Anyway, sorry if that was a stupid question.

7:31 PM
It wasn't. But I guess that now it is clear that I only mentioned the open tabs because that was the reason that I was able to find the remaining questions.

Ahhhh, indeed!
