@Anwar I've no experience of Electron, other than my first computer was an Acorn Electron (definitely dates me somewhat)! What don't you like about it?

hmmm some weird stuff in low quality queue that shouldn't be there
@Anwar are you going to add an answer there?

@terdon @ThomasWard @jokerdino (and any other moderators I forgot to @mention) I have been working on an AI for CoyoteBot which is pretty good. What I want to ask is: is there a way for the bot to find questions on SE and get the accepted answer?
Also, is the bot now good enough to be allowed in the general room?
You can test it here:

 The Coyote's Den

A room for interacting with CoyoteBot. Also, you can ask me qu...

@MarkYisri Yes, have a look at the SE API.

Hello!
Is there a page which summarises stats for number of questions asked / answered on Askubuntu?

1:16 PM
@MarkYisri It's not a mod decision. I keep failing to get that point across. You need to open a meta post, explain what your bot does and why it would be useful to have in chat and see what the community thinks.
As a general rule, yes, we do tend to avoid bots in the public rooms. That has led to strife and issues in the past and I really can't see any use to it, personally. However, if your meta post shows there is clear community support, then it can live here.
Until it starts making a nuisance of itself or users start abusing it and spamming the chat room, anyway.
But first, get a consensus. And don't just ask "should my bot be here". You need to tell people what it does, why they should care and why they should want it.
@popey Yes, but you need 30k rep to see it, I think.

blimey, 30k!
I am helping prep a talk where we want to mention some of the awesome work the community is doing, and wanted to call out the good stuff happening here.

Really? That's way too high

Is it possible to get a screenshot or something of a graph or other data?

@jokerdino It used to be mod-only until very, very recently.
@popey Pretty sure you can get all this from data.stackexchange.com

ok, will take a look, thanks!
that will probably be sufficient

1:22 PM
It's at 25k but probably not much of a difference.

45 folks on AU with >25k

Hello and good afternoon ! :)

hi @cl-netbox :)

@Zanna Hi Zanna ! :)

how are you doing?

1:32 PM
@Zanna I'm fine so far ... what about you ? :)

very good thanks :) :)

Yesterday I answered a question about removing online accounts - have you seen it ?

@cl-netbox no! I will look...
very nice... what about it?

@Zanna Well, it's strange ... for this quite easy thing I get upvotes and look at this -> askubuntu.com/questions/831216/reinstalling-grub2-efi-partition/… way more important to be solved and not a single upvote ! :) Can you understand why ? I have many of those answers ... :)

@cl-netbox upvoted, but I don't think * is a good choice there?
couldn't it go wrong if people copy and paste?
idk

1:43 PM
@Zanna Thank you very much ! :) It is the only way to do it as you work on several disks and partitions sometimes ... that's why I place the note at the end ... :)

anyway it's always strange to me what gets upvotes and the easy ones usually get the most... yesterday I answered a lovely question about renaming files, and the only upvote I got was from the other person who answered it
doesn't matter though, it was a fun answer :)
@cl-netbox but * will match anything...
I'm not understanding...

@Zanna Yes indeed ... will have a look at it ... the other day I helped a user to solve a graphics issue ... hours of work ... long discussions ... also only one upvote ! :)
@Zanna Note : sd* = disk | sd** = efi partition | sd*** = system partition ... self-explaining : 1 star / 2 stars / 3 stars

@cl-netbox those answers that are very specific to one person though, it's understandable that they don't get so many votes
@cl-netbox but even one star will match anything... if I copy and paste it, I get multiple matches?

@Zanna I love answering questions, especially the ones that seem unanswerable, but I stopped looking for (-expecting) any reasonable relation between votes and quality of answer. At least in quantity :)

@Zanna In this case you can't copy and paste ... everyone has a different partition layout

1:49 PM
@JacobVlijm exactly, me too, there is no point in trying to understand it or predict it or worry about it, enjoy doing it, and make it as helpful as possible, and that's all

@Zanna Found it ... and upvoted ! :) Now you have two ! :D

@cl-netbox yes but I mean if people do actually copy and paste they may get some unexpected results, because the shell actually expands *
@cl-netbox thank you, that's very kind, please upvote answer by @JacobVlijm too

@Zanna If you copy and paste this, simply nothing happens ... and after reading the answer every effected user replaces the stars with a letter or a number ! :)

@cl-netbox wanna play with CoyoteBot?

@MarkYisri No, thank you ! :) I am having no idea what it is good for ? Can you explain it to me ?

1:54 PM
@cl-netbox that's cool if nothing happens... I'm not testing it, I was just speculating that it might cause problems because * has meaning to the shell

@Zanna Hey ... that is something that's done from a rescue media ! :)
@MarkYisri Thank you ! :) What is this thingie with the bot about ? :)

@cl-netbox sure, I know, I have a few live USBs lying around (and have fixed many things that way haha) and I could test it, but I will take your word for it :)

@Zanna Guess what ? I used this method hundreds of times ... of course mostly after testing EFI booting things with different operating systems ! :)

@cl-netbox I mean, I could test whether using /dev/sd* matches multiple partitions or does nothing like you say

@Zanna sd* matches nothing ... it has to be sda or sdb or sdc or ... so nothing can happen, right ? :)
@Zanna : sudo mount /dev/sd*** /mnt What else if nothing can happen with this command ? ls -l /mnt shows what ? NOTHING ! :)

2:07 PM
... I mean, if I do ls /dev/mmc* I get /dev/mmcblk1 /dev/mmcblk1boot1 /dev/mmcblk1p2 /dev/mmcblk1rpmb /dev/mmcblk1boot0 /dev/mmcblk1p1 /dev/mmcblk1p3

@Zanna Yes, but when you mount nothing to /mnt, ls -l /mnt shows nothing, means nothing is mounted, right ? :)

yes, I believe you that it works, but you see my doubt?

@Zanna I was trying to find a q to answer. also wanted to know if a new q or answering an existing q is better
@Arronical lol! I was referring to the electron js framework Atom text editor is built on.

@Anwar let me know if you answer it :)

OK

2:15 PM
@Zanna Well, a bit, but it helped many users this way and it never lead to much confusion (except in those cases when a user doesn't even know that he has disks and partitions at all ... hahaha) - something else : Can you tell me what this bot is about which @MarkYisri is talking here and some other members too ? :)
Hey @Anwar ! :) Good afternoon ! :)

@Anwar I got that, did have to google it though! What don't you like about it?

@cl-netbox Im sure it's fine, I believe you, I just wanted to explain why I personally wouldn't use * but some other symbol instead :) hmm see here for something about what's going on with CoyoteBot, I don't want to fill up the room with that :) meta.askubuntu.com/questions/16331/where-should-i-put-coyotebot

@Arronical It is memory hungry.
@cl-netbox Good evening :)

@Anwar Good to know!

progressive symphonic metal
and an awesomely staged music video

2:25 PM
Hmmm is this an answer? I guess it's unclear from the question whether OP is asking about the meaning of the warning or saying they can't boot any more askubuntu.com/review/first-posts/640046

@Zanna Thanks, I got your point ... maybe in the future I will replace it with something else, numbers or Xes ... now reading that meta post ... :)
@DavidFoerster Nice ! :) Good Afternoon David ! :)
@Zanna What do we need a bot in this chat room for ? I definitely see no need nor any advantage for something like this here ! :) Or am I wrong ? :)

@cl-netbox I agree with you :) I would prefer the bot to have a nice den where people can go if they want to play with it

@DavidFoerster What do you think of this -> youtube.com/watch?v=_T3aASlOsaA ? I once enjoyed a gig in Nürnberg way back in the 70's ... Rick Wakeman was gorgeous ! :)

I guess I should start with Good morning....regardless of how big of a lie it may be...

@TheXed Good morning for you ! :)

2:38 PM
@cl-netbox good morning...
My apple cider taste like s*** because someone left coffee in the Keurig and i have to pick a rabbit hole....and it is cold out....
OH and everyone hates me...

@cl-netbox: neat.

@DavidFoerster That was the big time of bombastic rock ... remember ELP (Emerson, Lake & Palmer) ? :)

yes, but they don't do much for me

2:55 PM
@DavidFoerster Well, you know, I am still blown away when I hear whatever song from Led Zeppelin ... they had a groove that nowadays still sounds modern ... I once saw them in Dortmund : not much stuff on the stage, but those four guys burned the place down, so they are on top of my all time favorites list ! :)

Those guys i I like a lot too.

@DavidFoerster Hey, then I have something for you -> youtube.com/watch?v=GLwfjHBpFr8 I think you'll like this movie ! :)

@popey sure!
how would you like it setup?
There are also votes and traffic graphs.

and now Amazon.com will not accept my password...

1 hour later…
4:12 PM
Vote for close, boring askubuntu.com/questions/847118/…

@JacobVlijm submitted pre-view to omgubuntu >:-D

Rinzy ! :)

@Rinzwind WOW, thanks :) I am working on a polished ppa version, since further extending would make the answer veeery long :)

boxy!

@Benny "boring" isn't in the close reasons ;)

4:16 PM
@JacobVlijm get the ppa in order >:=D

@Rinzwind working on it :)

no you are typing in this chat box >:D

@Rinzwind no I am not :) There is no text here.

oh really, lol

4:19 PM
@Fabby Hey my friend ! :) Must have been a few minutes that we missed each other ... give yourself some rest ... sometimes ... :)
@IanC You're welcome ! :) Truly meant ! :)

I just installed my first server
Ubuntu server
Openssh
any advice
:)

@RonnieMarlow Secure it:

1. Change the SSH server port to something other than 22
2. Install fail2ban and set it up. Guide: https://www.digitalocean.com/community/tutorials/how-to-protect-ssh-with-fail2ban-on-ubuntu-14-04

@BharadwajRaju Thank You I'll check it out.
I am thinking about using Reminna remote Desktop Client. It's going to be awesome.

4:36 PM
Also, make sure to keep it away from running water.

ok! :)

@RonnieMarlow If you're looking for remote desktop access, look up X11-over-SSH

I want to control the desktop of the clients side! Something like tha
@BharadwajRaju ok cool

4:50 PM
@BharadwajRaju Doesn't that need an X server on the server? Or do you just mean ssh -Y?

@terdon It does, I assumed that was what @RonnieMarlow was trying to do. But ssh -Y also tunnels SSH from server to client, just in "trusted" mode.

@BharadwajRaju I'm not 100% sure but I'm pretty sure that ssh -Y (or ssh -X) doesn't require a running X server on the machine you are connecting to.

hello.

@terdon From `man ssh`:

-Y Enables trusted X11 forwarding. Trusted X11 forwardings are not subjected to the X11 SECURITY extension controls.

ssh -Y/-X forwards X11 requests from client to server (which needs an X server on the server). I use the setup every once in a while.

@BharadwajRaju Yes, I know what it is, I've used it many, many times. I just don't remember if there had to be an X server running on the machine I was connecting to. I am 99.9% sure I used to do this on a headless server I had set up. Since it connects to the local X server, it shouldn't need a remote one to be running.

5:04 PM
@terdon Oh, so, yes you're right, it isn't required on the server, but the use of X11 Forwarding is to run GUI programs on the server on a local X11 server, so the installation of said GUI programs depends on an X11 server. But you can use the option without an X server on the server.

Exactly. On a system like Ubuntu, you probably can't install any GUI stuff from the repos without bringing in the whole X system, but i) you can still compile from source or run compiled binaries and ii) you can install the X system, but there's no need to actually run it.

5:26 PM
pokes @terdon just to say hello

yo!

so I heard something funny from an international student who works with me here at this university:
if a message is in Chinese and has numbers next to it, it's spam.
Therefore, 99.999% of Chinese text emails and messages are spam
(I believe it)

@KazWolfe Me giving you my password algorithm? Yeah sure pal!
(that was the last thing you told me... :P )

@ThomasWard Well yeah. If you receive a message in a language you don't speak, chances are it's spam. I'm pretty sure the percentage will be different for Chinese speakers :)

In case someone here is or was effected by this ClamAV issue -> askubuntu.com/questions/846849/… ... please read my answer ! :)

Q: ClamAV : freshclam hangs and uses 100% CPU

nauticalI try to update the ClamAV database by running freshclam. The daily-*.cdiff is downloaded successfully, but then the process hangs. The CPU is maxed out at 100%, but the update just will not finish. I canceled the process with Ctrl+C after appr. 10 minutes. Here is the output from my update attem...

ooops ... sorry ... accidentally pasted again ...
@Fabby How many ping services do you have enabled ? :D :D :D

@ThomasWard that's what I thought, but someone telling me it isn't... anyway steeldriver seems to know how to do it (unsurprisingly)

@ParanoidPanda 01:00 EST (06:00 GMT) will be the time polls close in the final state (Alaska) and the result is declared.

@ParanoidPanda finished eating bamboos and chocolate cake ? :D :D :D

user136984

MelanieHow do I sign out of this page? Usually you have to log out of accounts - I can't see a log out option.

6:20 PM
@Fabby What ??? Is this what you mean with "giving yourself some rest" ? :D
@ThomasWard : What about nominating a panda ... @ParanoidPanda would be a proper candidate ... and vote for him then ? :D

user136984
@cl-netbox: Great idea! I've been thinking about running for president! ;D

@ParanoidPanda Well, I would vote for you ... sincerely ! HaHaHa ... :D

user136984
I really don't know how much longer I can take it all.

user136984
Now I understand my friends who refuse to read the news.

user136984
And I think I'm going to start loving British politics... It's so much better than the American stuff...

We'll get results from Indiana and Kentucky after 6

10:14 PM
@Zacharee1 lel gary johnson
we might want to do election night in a different chatroom lol

Well we're not voicing opinions
escept the unilateral opinion that it would be quite amazing if Johnson got in

#Ubuntu #Budgie Is Now an Official Ubuntu Flavor http://buff.ly/2fe0Ng2 @ubuntu @budgie_remix @Canonical… https://twitter.com/i/web/status/796094511399206916

EYYYYY
aww, we have to wait until 17.04

@Seth you're late :p

10:29 PM
oh haha, should have looked up first :P

tsk tsk

well at least I made a star-able message :P

finnnneeee
This makes me think. Should we support questions that ask about using a non-official DE/app package like Cinnamon? And should we support hybrid DEs, since those tend to be problematic?

@Zacharee1 If I can install it in ubuntu it is on-topic.

Then why are certain Ubuntu flavors OT?
Like MATE and Budgie were
It's Ubuntu, just diferent graphical stuff

10:32 PM
@Zacharee1 because we have to draw the line somewhere and many of these distributions make changes to the baseline, e.g. mint and elementary.

Hmm

budgie may not have but no one wants a zigzag line, one that will always be changing every few months.

Alright

personally I would not mind if we supports all derivatives of Ubuntu, official or otherwise, but I am a minority.

But what about hybrid environments?
Those are usually their own issue

10:34 PM
meaning?

Like if I have GNOME, Unity, Budgie, MATE, XFCE and LXDE (which I do..) installed and I have a problem applying themes

This budgie-remix might be worth a try in a VM on the next weekend.

your baseline is still ubuntu.

just like with Mint, a lot of normal Ubuntu answers might not apply
because of how much stuff has been messed up

no, you are still running "normal ubuntu", just heavily customized :)

10:36 PM
@ByteCommander I'm gonna switch back to it on my Ubuntu install in a minute
@Seth But isn't that just what Mint is?

mint is not normal ubuntu because they cherry pick updates and modify the kernel (at least, last I checked).
@Zacharee1 Mint is customized at a much lower level. Mint does not start with a baseline ubuntu install.

I'm not sure I like that reason, but meh

I never said I liked it either :)

@Zacharee1 cool. how is it?

@ByteCommander last I tried, buggy as hell
but I still liked it

10:39 PM
Ubuntu 18.04, codename Buggy Budgie :P
Well, should be enough for a VM test.

Last I tried was last year
