@Vincent I like the new track thing but not enough for that price. if they had given the forcetouch trackpad the ability to use the Apple Pencil as well at that price I'd probably buy it on the spot. That's the bigger miss to me
I didn't know what the result was from that meta so just asked in the mod chat
I was going to and usually just destroy the entire account but from that weird meta post and robotic chat thingy didn't know if that was still the right course and am about to head out on the road
I don't even have a diamond. But I volunteer in the Smoke detector project and we cast hundreds of spam flags every day, so we got pretty good at handling spam
I became aware of the post because our bot reported it due to suspicious post structure, blacklisted websites, etc. We usually nuke these via casted spam flags. But your lock prevented us from doing that.
Please bear with us a bit :). Most of us aren't very invested in anything but this site, and not much info in how to handle spam actually trickles down
and a mod locking a spam post or editing out spam links from obvious spam posts just makes them last longer and essentially helps it garner views - thats what our community project is supposed to stop. I don't presume on instructing you how to do your job, but I felt like pointing it out because smaller sites often aren't in the loop about SE wide policy so much
I came in because I too was surprised to see the spam locked by a mod, but I don't think we need to prolong this discussion
if you want an authoritative link on how spam should be handled, I'm sure we can dig something up for you, but maybe that discussion should happen in Charcoal HQ then so as not to disrupt this room too much
Hrmm. Linking to an image is technically identical to rendering it, but I can see that it adds an extra step in the workflow toward answering which could potentially reduce the quantity and quality of answers.
@BESW on many other sites, low-rep users can only post a clickable URL to an image they uploaded, and (typically) if it's any good, a higher-rep user will edit the post to inline it
Yes, I think it's more important that new users be able to upload imgur links as part of the Ask A Question form, than that they be able to post inline.
So policy changes to control what spam can or can't do is a ridiculous effort/reward ratio over there.
I guess the first question is, does this happen often enough to warrant a mechanical policy change or would it be more effective to encourage a spam-flagging culture here?
@Ryan Hello Ryan. We're active users of a chatroom named Charcoal HQ and we detect, flag and destroy spam across the network. The post you locked was spam, and that was why Magisch came in to see what was going on.
Why do we have to find out we are a 'spam problem site' by you @Magisch catching an instance of one of us (apparently, unknowingly) mis-managing a spam post, and then by having all of you guys -- sorry -- barge in here?
English.se and Puzzling.se have each had their own period of focused image spam, too, at various times, and it eventually cleared up--not sure if anything was done to abate those spates or not.
[ponder] A permanent solution to a temporary problem may be overkill, so it'd be nice to know what english.se and puzzling.se did.
I'd say this is looking less like "GD.SE is a spam problem site" and more like "GD.SE has very recently seen an uptick in a particular kind of spam with NSFW pictures which occasionally makes the rounds across the Stack."
@Vincent He means, that's what happened with previous sites in this situation, and that this conversation probably constitutes that happening for this situation.
I'm inclined to just suggest that we post a meta.gd.se asking folks to keep a weather eye for spam and telling them the proper procedure (flag as spam) for handling it.
"You may have noticed we've been getting nasty spam lately, here's how you can help."
