8:00 PM
HAPPY NEW YEAR!
oh, wait
how the...

you had it there for a second

I can't link images, apparently.

election began - 41 seconds ago... LOL

huh, I cast a preliminary vote but it still says "0 voted"

Still says election ends in 8 days too

8:02 PM
it does
2/14 at 20:00

so a primary just cuts into overall election time?
I figured a lack of a primary would advance the clock.

maybe the primary extends it if it's necessary

I don't know, have never seen a primary :). I could probably go over to Ask Ubuntu if I wanted to educate myself.
┐('~`;)┌

The order has changed for the candidates, I'm first now, not in most recent?

it's random
refresh and you'll get a different order

8:06 PM
Phew

Does anyone have a better short summary of how STV works than this one? stv.govt.nz/stv/how.htm

The single transferable vote (STV) is a voting system based on proportional representation and preferential voting. Under STV, an elector's vote is initially allocated to his or her most-preferred candidate. After candidates have been either elected (winners) by reaching quota or eliminated (losers), surplus votes are transferred from winners to remaining candidates (hopefuls) according to the surplus ballots' ordered preferences. The system minimizes "wasted" votes, provides approximately proportional representation, and enables votes to be explicitly cast for individual candidates rath...
Err, not short, however :).

With emphasis on short being better since most people I know fall asleep trying to read that wikipedia article

Preliminary voting has occurred.

it's worth noting that SE uses the Meek variant of STV

8:09 PM
indeed.

@KyleCronin Is that materially different than the NZ link I posted?

@bmike I suspect that there is not a more succinct example than that presentation, but as Kyle mentioned, that doesn't solve explaining the 'Meek' differences either.
Oh yeah, so (1) Rock the Vote (see above). (2) VVVVVVV

@bmike not sure, I didn't look at it. I only mentioned it because it's one of the types listed in the Wikipedia entry

Hey Kyle, you want to make a formal mention of the Town Hall date/time and pin it?
Also, could you modify the info notice and mention it on the main site too?
♦ have infinite edit time in chat?
Derp, they can edit anything, as has been previously shown.

yes
recently there's been a trend towards saying that the power of a diamond is only marginally more than a trusted user
this is very, very not true

8:18 PM
Who has been saying such?

@JasonSalaz True - I think the Meek is more about splitting the overages more fractionally. Winning candidates get their share of the redistributions from the eliminated candidates which then re-triggers a quota adjustment and further redistribution (which when we only can vote three choices, makes Meek or not a moot point quickly in practice)

Also, I thought the point of Trusted User was a de-facto ⋄

@JasonSalaz yeah, no

/wouldn't know

don't get me wrong, there's a lot that a Trusted User can do, but it's much closer to a 2k rep user's ability than it is to a diamond

8:19 PM
@KyleCronin Agreed - most of the "MOD" abilities comes between 2k and 8k from vague memory. The added bennies at 10k and 20k are small potatoes.

@JasonSalaz what should the message say?
Jan 30 at 17:16, by Jason Salaz
Hmm, that's odd. I thought a Trusted User was in-essence a de facto mod. Kinda the point of a trusted user.

> Cast your final vote in the Apple 2012 community moderator election! Participate in the Town Hall Chat on the 8th at 03:00 UTC
Something close to that, some things can of course be shuffled around.
Town Hall Chat = link to the chat room
8th at 03:00UTC link to Rebecca's timeanddate.com address from the other room.

I think that's too long

Join the Town Hall Chat [...]?

well, actually not really

8:28 PM
"vote now, free beer"

heh

"Beers on @bmike"

indeed

I wish I could queue up several mod messages
on the day of, I could change the date to "today"
after the event, I could change it to just voting
etc
test

Sounds like a great thing to talk about on MSO.

8:35 PM
maybe

@stuffe We have a pretty nice brew pub called Town Hall here in Minneapolis.
@KyleCronin Is this something that having 5 mods will help with - or are you a Super Mod in that respect?
Catch you all later - time to head outdoors and catch some winter sunshine.

8:55 PM
bmike and me both...
well, the winter sunshine part. not the head outdoors part. I am firmly planted here.

48 here

9:22 PM
Is there a "cast vote" button, or what do you do to confirm that the three people who appear on the right side of your screen are your votes? Or do you just go to a different page then?

@patrix ping, thanks

when they appear on the right, the vote is cast
@bmike I'm just a regular mod, whoever gets elected will have the same exact access I do

There's no "founder" status? :-)

fraid not
there isn't even such a concept in SE

I know.

9:37 PM
@KyleCronin I had assumed as much - that all mods could help with the maintenance and changing of site wide banners - just curious.
@Daniel Yes there is founder status, even if the site doesn't grant it. Many, many people have seen and benefitted from the work all the moderators have done. Kyle does stand out as someone really devoting time and energy to keep this place in top shape.

@bmike thanks :)

Votes cast. Good luck to all candidates!
At apple.stackexchange.com/a/39255/8546 how might we edit the three dots "…" to become a single ellipsis "…" ? I did experiment with an ellipsis, but it caused the end result to be blank.

My vote was in totally the opposite order than my intentions this time yesterday :)
same people tho.

gasp giveaway
Daniel and Argyle Marionette joined at exactly the same time.
dun dun dun dun dun

@JasonSalaz Wat?

9:46 PM
Nothing

@GrahamPerrin pong :-)

Best. Response. Ever.

Anyone want to help move this question along?

Q: What started the whole "i" movement?

hydroparadiseWhat started the whole "i" movement and what does the "i" stand for when talking about iPods, iPhones, iMacs, iPads and iCarly (woops!). I think it started with the iMac that came out in the late 90's, but still have always wondered where the "i" came from in terms of the product. Thanks.

e.g. get in before Kyle does so you get credit/flag weight :>

to go back to an earlier topic: you guys are aware that the timing for the town hall isn't very friendly to Europeans?

Yeah, I'm aware. @stuffe is doubly so considering he's a candidate. I was quite surprised at the choice of time, but Rebecca probably just picked a 'majority' time.

9:51 PM
To be honest, I'm glad I didn't throw my hat in. Would have been a bit problematic to do a town hall 4am in the morning

@patrix you're a star. One final thing, with reference to the examples of output at pastebin.com/diff.php?i=8kWamApM … would you agree that the new is easier to read than the old? (Easier to see, at a glance, those that are enabled.)

too late. (re: the linked question above)
Town Hall isn't a mandatory thing. It's unfortunate that it's not more accessible, but it's not at all mandatory. I seem to recall we had the same timing issue last year with Diago.

@GrahamPerrin That's definitively a matter of personal taste. I prefer the output to be cleary understandable, so I prefer displaying enabled/disabled. And as enabled is probably the standard case, I would mark the disabled ones special and just leave the enabled extensions without additional comment. But I'm fine with all of it, it should solve your problem after all

Given the number of candidates here, say, oh, now, I'm rather surprised we ended up with the time slot we did.

I'm not here, I'm working.

9:55 PM
Right.

You understand, Daniel. You're working, I'm working, Kyle's slacking, Nathan's schooling.

if only the nomination phase had started a bit sooner

But there's working and then there's working.

it probably would have been so much easier finding a convenient time on the wekend

We are here, but not dedicated to it. We could disappear at a moment's notice.

9:56 PM
Actually, I'm not working right now. My schedule is bizarre.

@KyleCronin I said the same thing in my comments on doodle.

But I am cleaning the living room. Can't you tell?

Completely
I'm cleaning too.
... my computer :>.

@JasonSalaz comments were private, no one else but the poll initiator can read them

@KyleCronin How would that help? Might just mean more candidates and more to organise, surely?

9:58 PM
Given the excellent list of candidates I fear that not participating in the town hall further reduces any changes to get elected
Starting earlier would probably have allowed to put the town hall on a weekend

Sure - lagged for a min, just had a dump of replies that included that first time round - oops

@stuffe I mean that if the nom phase started sooner it would have ended sooner. imagine if it ended on this past friday instead of today - we would have had all weekend for the town hall

There's barely any time left to send bribery beers over airmail, next year I will be more organised ;)
@WheatWilliams come say hello, I can see you answering questions...

@patrix thanks. Your answer accepted, after I figure out the ellipsis stuff (on a learning curve here!) I'll add a similar answer with a note about personal preferences (a link to this chat).

@stuffe let's make sure to have enough Europeans join next years election, at least to make sure we get a say in fixing the time of the town hall

10:04 PM
I might be up at 03:00 but that's not the norm :-)

It's only 3am. I may get up and ruin my chances by typing incoherent responses in obscure English slang dialects.
while yawning a lot

Have fun then, I'll read the transcript afterwards.

@stuffe in my book that'll increase your chances ;)

Loving the grammar on the pro web masters question here

Q: Where DNS server this domain is pionting at?

TowhidI bought a domain(tohid.ir.tc) from a hosting company. it seems that it is a sub domain of this domain(Ir.tc). it made lot's of problems for me. I don't now to which DNS server it is pointing. both whois query and domain reseller say that it is pointed to my host. but the hosting company says th...

Great choice to feature on a banner ad ;)

@patrix to wrap in an .app here I'm using Platypus, which prompts for an identifier and author information. For identifier I'm toying with net.redirectme.perrin.Safariextensionlister … or — a question for anyone — is it more appropriate to give a stackexchange identifier for something that uses code from Ask Different? And here's how Finder presents (as copyright) the author info. OK?

10:12 PM
@stuffe Not all pro web masters are native English speakers, of course, although the official language of the Turks and Caicos Islands (.tc domain) is English.

@Daniel Agreed, just humoured that a post in dire need of editing was used in the Ad. You would think that the ad process isn't utterly random..
I speak a bit of Turkish, but I bet their English is better on the whole!

Can't answer that for everybody, but any code I post to Ask Different is in the public domain anyway. A reference to the original post is appreciated of course

@KyleCronin I know. That's why I explicitly referenced it. It only applied to Rebecca anyways.

@patrix Gotcha. Thanks again. Bye for now …

Magpies

10:24 PM
I sense the first Ask Different meme.
Maybe second, some people might claim CWs are the first >_>.

11:03 PM
could someone on Lion grab a quick screenshot for me?

@cksubs...fire away

cool, thanks
System Prefs > Language & Text >"Text" tab
that window
BUT
Please use Grab's "timed screen"
and give the window focus
first, before taking the pic
I need all the controls to be blue and in focus.
Oh, and also... please uncheck "Automatically correct text"
"Correct Spelling Automatically" I mean. Uncheck that

/Users/stuffe/Desktop/text.tiff

you don't need grab to give it focus :)
Like that?

11:11 PM
Yeah, using timed screen takes the whole screen

eh?
can't grab do both? specific window and timed?

Timed screen takes the whole screen, not just the window. There is no timed window.

I see.

How did you upload the pic Jason?

Oh, is focus not Blue anymore?
In Lion?
It is here in Snow Leopard

11:13 PM
'in focus' you mean the tab strip (Language, Text, Formats, Input Sources)?

Yeah

yeah, nope.

Muted now

Funny that Ask different has the reverse too.

here the "Text" is blue if the window is in focus
but it's gray if not in focus

11:14 PM
yeah, that's an old remnant of aqua that disappeared recently.

If the window is not in focus, all the blue highlighting is removed from the tick boxes etc

@stuffe In 10.6 right... cause he's saying there's no blue at all in 10.7

there is in the foreground, there is not in the background

There's blue only on the tick boxes, not in the top menu slider control in Lion, as per your pic

11:15 PM
great
thanks guys

^ background/shaded/faded

yeah, gotcha

Any time
jason, how did you upload the pics direct into chat?
Hmmm, @Daniel and @ArgyleMarionette login simultaeniously...

With a name like Argyle Marionette, how one earth could anyone suspect that person of being a sock puppet?
I mean besides the starred comment.

Right, time to fly off to bed
Bye all :)

11:49 PM
Argyle Marionette is making some nice edits.
Too bad it's too late to for nominations.
