@Zacharee1 what on earth did your answer have that mine didn't

@KazWolfe well you just linked to installing NVIDIA drivers, which needs special steps, which I linked to. I also talked about the CPU. Also, links to splitting partitions

Q: Would you reject an edit to a question asked 2 1/2 years ago?

WinEunuuchs2UnixThis queue review link: http://askubuntu.com/review/suggested-edits/627069 The proposed edit is simply taking comments made 2 1/2 years ago and changing the question to reflect them. Should I reject it because it's like mining for points without accomplishing anything for the OP or anyone search...

1:08 AM
@Seth now that the bot seems to be working, I'm going to post about it on Meta.

rm -rf @Edity -->:)

Why do I have to feel so bullied with remove commands?

1:58 AM
no need to have all that banter over one comment. both "AAH KAZ" and "ACT NORMAL" arent things to argue about

wat
SE mods aren't giving wolfbot powers, so i don't have powers yet.

@KazWolfe oh, well, carry on

@RolandiXor probably right!!!!

@Windows3.1 I don't want to seem rude, but you aren't a moderator, nor have you been here all that long. There's a "special" dynamic here.

@ChristenEdmundson Welcome.

@ChristenEdmundson bacon

We're right in the middle of some silliness here.
So excuse the off-topic nature of this discussion.

2:08 AM
@ChristenEdmundson in all seriousness, hello

@ChristenEdmundson hi there

@ChristenEdmundson welcome!

@NathanOsman on-topic is off-topic here, remember (bacon)?

I picked up on the spamming of "bacon" for the twitter bot x)

@Edity WHY IN THE NAME OF BACON DO YOU NEED TO KEEP YOUR CAPS LOCK ON?? HOLY BACON!
lol

2:08 AM

2:10 AM
@ChristenEdmundson No, I didn't mean you :)

@Windows3.1 The mods just like kicking you. And @Edity.

lol, I know, I meant to put ":P" at the end but I got distacted by the username auto-fill

@KazWolfe best post ever
OH WHY DID YOU EDIT

Crap

2:11 AM
gah kaz!

@ChristenEdmundson Trust me, we do have serious discussions here once-in-a-while.

@ChristenEdmundson lol

Because I made it more true.

not nice!

@NathanOsman Ha!

2:11 AM
bye see you next time when I get unkicked

@NathanOsman lol, alright

alright, I've made the gif because I can't find it anywhere:

@ChristenEdmundson you happened to come when the most awesome person ever is here and that is @NathanOsman
wait... was edity kicked or did he leave in mockery?

Preferences dialog might come quite soon to udisks-indicator probably in a couple days

wow, I'm honored!
it's a pleasure to meet you @NathanOsman
x)

2:13 AM

I guess I shouldn't direct you guys to this line of source code... github.com/AskUbuntu/tbot/blob/master/scraper/settings.go#L37

i like laser bacon

@ChristenEdmundson Thanks, but everyone here is awesome.
I'm no more awesome than the next guy.

GET THE BRIDGE IN HERE NOW

I'm not awesome. I'm hated by everyone

@NathanOsman oh you did that on purpose

@Windows3.1 Nope and nope.
@Zacharee1 Hush you.

but if there are lasers and bacon involved....

2:14 AM
I got disconnected.

SOMEONE GO GET THE BRIDGE
WE NEED THEIR SPAM!

so, I'm somewhat new to chats, either IRC, or here, what exactly does a bot do opon message of a kyword being sent?

HWAT
@NathanOsman YOU CANNOT SILENCE THE TRUTH

@ChristenEdmundson automatic chatting

2:15 AM
@ChristenEdmundson Nathan's bot just watches for "good" posts. Which involves the word "laser" or "bacon"

@ChristenEdmundson Well this bot just records the message matching certain keywords and sends it somewhere to be reviewed by @NathanOsman

Other chatbots, like mine, are a lot more useful.

@NathanOsman you're clever :P

Yeah, the bot does an hourly scrape.
Or at least, that's the default.
Anyway, supper.

@KazWolfe pew pew GO THE BACON LASERS

2:15 AM
GTG.

ahhh, okay

@Zacharee1 forgot to mention laser

hb, enjoy the food. hope it's bacon!

Bacon

she learns fast!

2:16 AM
sigh

lol

@KazWolfe

@ChristenEdmundson heated by lasers

thanks, I try

@Edity is just pretending, am I right @NathanOsman ?

2:16 AM
One bacon day bacon a bacon girl bacon went bacon to bacon market bacon where bacon she bacon bought bacon some bacon bacon.

@KazWolfe WATCH YOUR LANGUAGE!!! DONT USE THE B WORD!
just joking! :)

@Zacharee1 what kind fo bacon would it be if it weren't lazer heated?

@Windows3.1 booby?

bacon
lol

2:18 AM
@ChristenEdmundson exactly

lol;
sighs
BACON
GUYS KICK ME!!!

no mods here

I mean... the word "booby" is also indicative of a message being of the highest caliber. we should add that to the list

and nobody is giving me RO sadly

@ChristenEdmundson good idea

2:19 AM
@kaz what is RO?

@KazWolfe so sadly
@ChristenEdmundson room owner

@ChristenEdmundson Room Owner.
Basically the step before a real mod.

ah, thanks

@ChristenEdmundson to change the subject, what's your Ubuntu experience

2:19 AM
@Windows3.1 wanna get kicked?
ping every AskUbuntu mod at once for no reason

@KazWolfe god forbid we ever see that happen

@Windows3.1 I'm new-ish to it, I recently migrated to linux after wanting to for a long time. I was big into windows desktop modding (software side, not hardware) but that's a lot easier on linux with DEs and WMs

@Zacharee1 hey i'm not running until someone says i should. which won't happen :P

So far I'm enjoying it, but I may end up moving to arch one I learn the ropes

@ChristenEdmundson to be fair, most Linuxes are similar. Stick with what you like. You won't get any nerd points for running Arch, really.

2:22 AM
@KazWolfe seems like a good plan, I like it.

@ChristenEdmundson I find arch/Gentoo too time consuming to get started on.

@ChristenEdmundson donz u daer

I mean, try other things, sure, but do stick with what you like
which is why even after 8 years of ubuntu, i'm still here and not on arch
(even though performance servers do run it)

@JourneymanGeek hai

And depending on the environment rh style and Ubuntu /Debian style distros are what you see in the wild.

2:23 AM
I'm baaaack

@KazWolfe Yeah, I know. The main reason why is just to force me out of my comfort zone. I'm big into graphic and UI design, but I love comp sci too and it's been too long since I did much with it, so I'm trying to get reengaged with it, esp since I may not go to college where it's easy to just enroll in a course

@KazWolfe you haven't gotten sick of it yet? :p

@Zacharee1 nah

@Edity alas.

@ChristenEdmundson ooh, make your own UNIX

2:24 AM
@Edity Hello, I'm new here

1. Learn Ubuntu
2. Go to LFS
3. Go back to Ubuntu

Hai

@Zacharee1 lol, that's a bit out of my scope for the time being

@ChristenEdmundson fine, do Arch pshh
;)

i was 360 nokicked

2:25 AM
For comp-sci though, there's practically no distinction, unless you want to learn different architectures and init methods
but for programming and computer theory, there's no difference

@Zacharee1 x)
@KazWolfe yeah, I'm mostly interested in it because it will force me to get used to doing things the config file way, and through the terminal emulator, which I need to do, but so long as I have a gui or can just look up every comand I need vibatim, I never will.

@ChristenEdmundson you can do this on Ubuntu.

yeah, we're biased to ubuntu here :P

I've not touched a GUI on Ubuntu in years

but honestly it's your call, but it's best to stick to what you're comfortable with in Linux.

2:28 AM
@KazWolfe Ask Ubuntu? Biased? Towards Ubuntu? WAT
9

@JourneymanGeek you absolutely can, but if I CAN do it through a a gui, I will
(I come from the land of windows and am trying to break that habit x)

You can remove X11

@KazWolfe but you can always reinstall it easily

but you have people like me who have, what, 11 or so terminals open 24/7.

I'd say GUI in combination with terminal are way better

2:29 AM
the GUI isn't bad per se, it's just a tool.

@KazWolfe Operating non-graphicaly is way beyond me, I'm a UI designer.

Sometimes it's the right tool for the job, sometimes it's not.

@ChristenEdmundson I often build my systems from a server or minimal install

@ChristenEdmundson welp

Like, I use the GUI for stuff like web browsing and the like, but most file operations I do in the Terminal :D

2:30 AM
either one by itself has limitations

@JourneymanGeek I implore you to edit "bacon" into chat.stackexchange.com/transcript/message/32791405#32791405 somewhere

@JourneymanGeek That's pretty much the part I'm looking for from arch, just the setup and customization/configuration

treat the GUI and the terminal as two separate tools in the toolbox. They can do each other's job, but they have advantages and disadvantages compared to the other.
Like some things can be done in the terminal in less than 100 chars, while the GUI would take thousands of mouse-clicks.
some things in the terminal take four and a half scripts, but are two clicks in the GUI.

what did I miss? I see bacon everywhere

2:32 AM
@IanC BAAAAAAAAACONNNN

@KazWolfe absolutely, for example, I still do 100% of file mangement, movement, etc. (even for things requiring root privledge, I just run sudo nautilus) through the gui

17
A: Unable to open any graphical app with "sudo"

Kaz WolfeOlder post is below, but is still 100% valid. Mir is not what one would consider stable/ready for operation. Most of the Ubuntu core (such as the below mentioned gksudo and other programs) still relies on X, and can't handle what Mir uses. Until further notice, it's recommended you switch back t...

I'm not sure, but wasn't there a problem on using graphical programs with regular sudo?
oh
@KazWolfe you beat me
haha
it had to do with configuration files getting the wrong owner right?

*reloads sniper rifle*

oh, what should I be doing differently?

2:33 AM
@IanC conf files, logs, etc.
@ChristenEdmundson don't use the GUI for sudo tasks. If you have to, use gksu or gksudo
or whatever linux does now. is it pkexec now? i forget.

usually it's easier to do file management on the CLI anyways

^--

cool, gonna go research gksu and gksudo realy fast, brb

learn and use nano (or vi if you want to torture yourself with a stupidly complex "text editor")

learn nano and learn how to quit vi and you're good
hahaha

2:37 AM
yeah, I know nano, I just have a garbage memory, so file paths are super hard compared to visual navigation

you can mix nautilus and CLI, just browse through nautilus and once you need to do something right-click > Open in terminal

ne might be an option

i think you need to install that addin

@IanC also not used to the idea of operating a terminal from a subdirectory (this is all pretty new to me)
also, what is CLI?

Command Line Interface

2:39 AM
command line

damn @KazWolfe, stop stealing my lines
:p
gotta get ready for work

so, I found this askubuntu.com/questions/21033/… but it's way over my head, any input on which "sudo replacement for GUI operations" Ishould use for what?

here @ChristenEdmundson, if you want to learn the terminal real fast, hit Ctrl+Alt+F1. it'll drop you into a TTY. Get back to the GUI with Ctrl+Alt+F7

good night everyone, see you all later!

2:40 AM
I may have already asked but what is a TTY?
G'night @IanC !

Teletypewriter
just a legacy term from really old computing
that survived somehow
40
A: What does "TTY" stand for?

karelEarly user terminals connected to computers were electromechanical teleprinters or teletypewriters (TeleTYpewriter, TTY), and since then TTY has continued to be used as the name for the text-only console. There are 6 virtual consoles in Ubuntu accessed by the keyboard shortcuts Ctrl+Alt+F1 to C...

huh, gotta write that down then, I might have to try that, don't know what I might try to accomplish with it though x)

it's terminal only mode
no gui or anything, you just have your shell and nothing else.

@KazWolfe yeah, I gathered as much

it's insanely useful for recovery mode and "soft-background" tasks that you want to quickly switch to/monitor
or if you just don't need a GUI for something

2:43 AM
ttys are the best.

I use them because they're six terminal windows always open and always ready exactly where i left them

lol, the graphic designer in me wants to ask "but can you change the typeface?" x)
wow, room got really silent. not the place for graphic design jokes, huh?

no, we all went elsewhere temporarily
and yes, i think you can somehow.

Sure you can. Kerning on the other hand...

Keming*

2:50 AM
and I'm too excited for my Fitbit.

@ChristenEdmundson I also run guake or yakuake (for KDE) on every single GUI system I own

@ChristenEdmundson lolz xD

@JourneymanGeek I use gnome so there's the drop down terminal

Hit tilde (or f12 - which I set it to) for a drop down terminal
KDE guy myself :p

I have 4 DE's installed, still need to give Openbox a spin and find a beginner tiling WM, a lot of linux's appeal for me is the variety of UI paradigms. As a UI person it's super facinating to me, coming from windows
