@hichris123 That's a hack, though - what if the next request doesn't generate a backoff? Then we want to send the next one immediately.

@undo Well, there does need to be some space between them...

Why?

I'll work on something this weekend. I was discussing this with Shog and he thought of @JanDvorak's suggestion of a worker pool (basically).

Where was that?

@undo 2 seconds in a short amount of time isn't a great idea just because that might encourage future backoffs.

 Tavern on the Meta

MY GOD, IT'S FULL OF STARS AND BACKLOG! General friendly chit-...

2:34 AM
We already have some spacing (if we were locking) in the form of network latency.
That'll get us a good 200ms on my network.
... and anyway, just lock and wait after the lock if you really want.

200 ms latency still amazes me. :P

Round trip, but yeah it's horrible.

This is what I'm referring to by Shog's suggestion:
in Tavern on the Meta on Meta Stack Exchange Chat, 22 mins ago, by Shog9
Ideally, you have something to manage your requests; you're not trying to handle this every place you need something from the API, and whatever is handling them for you is also keeping track of the rate at which you're hitting it, any backoffs that might be in place, etc.
in Tavern on the Meta on Meta Stack Exchange Chat, 21 mins ago, by Shog9
That frees you up to queue requests, feed them in at a reasonable rate, log everything in a consistent way and most importantly: not make any when there's a backoff in place.

And now you're introducing a bunch of complexity.
If Python had blocks... maybe. But it doesn't.
So you're looking at either splitting up logic, or implementing a bunch of delegate callbacks and handling state.

We already have a framework with api_get_post(). I've wanted to standardize the two anyway -- that way, we can have bodyfetcher call api_get_post() and then do its side of the work.

2:39 AM
I'd like to see that, but I suspect you'll have a heck of a time doing it cleanly

@undo the socvr has a serious problem when there's no ROs about
I should've come here. didn't realise you were here

Shog's already there.

@undo Yeah, that's why I didn't do it before. And why I'm not trying tonight. :P

yeh I know

Maybe this weekend will work though.

[ SmokeDetector | MS ] Pattern-matching website in answer: Vitamin B food source by Erika Rizk on health.stackexchange.com

@hichris123 Throw it in a PR, sounds like a major arch change.
Looking forward to seeing that, though.

Hopefully it won't be too big. Just an addition of some bodyfetcher logic to apigetpost (and yes, maybe a Lock :P)

Yeah, I was trying to figure out how to do that without locking somewhere
Otherwise you have to go to a delegate pattern
Blocks would make this so much easier.
Delegate pattern would mean you have to know what object to call, what method to call, and what state information is necessary. And this would all have to be in a big array somewhere, tied to the specific request.
And to do it right, there should be a way to cancel requests and expand them; I.e. if we get more posts in an already-tipped site quota.

@undo Hmm, yeah. Maybe this is a bit complicated. :P

This guy is escaping the spam thumb of smite: wordpress.stackexchange.com/questions/162795/…

The question is whether a mod would accept a spam flag on this. You're supposed to edit first, according to some.

but at the other side, editing spam can give a spammer reputation, and a single answer upvote gives him the rights to post more than 2 links per post

I don't have an account on wordpress.stackexchange and I don't intend to since I have no interest in writing. So that's how the spam escapes. By being on a site I don't have reputation on.

Good point. Meta question?

Software that can make constructive comments and flag unconstructive comments is within our reach of machine learning technologies. I say it's 10 years off and will take a data center of processing power.

If they post genuine content, that content should probably stay. If they later switch to pure spam, we'll nuke them hard.
@EricLeschinski Nah, SD seems to be doing just fine on a raspberry PI, we just need to blacklist more URLs. He doesn't flag, though.

Q: Can a machine be taught to flag comments automatically?

AndyTL;DR: Yes it can. Background On June 27, 2014 Skynet awoke. It looked at Stack Overflow and thought "Why are all these people being so chatty and talking about obsolete things? I should nuke them all!" Fortunately, Skynet was a baby and only had access to my 100 comment flags a day. Prior ...

It takes me much less than a data center of processing power for that
The biggest limit I hit is that I only get 100 flags a day.

I like finding and nuking spam and low quality posts. I frequent several chatrooms that focus on spam cleanup and low quality pos...

@Kyll It would seem that site is puts sunglasses on not very healthy.

What the hell what's up with all the downvotes?

Well @JanDvorak , looks like your suggestion to make a meta post got me a boat load of downvotes. The answer to your question is: "Log in to every subsite.stackexchange.com" that you want to flag, and just flag it. You don't have power over them because you can't be trusted to clean up spam yourself.

I'm not even sure you technically can perform any action on another site without an account.

I guess I was calling into question the amount of trust they give to users with higher than average rep.
Everyone with a little bit of rep on any site gets exactly 100 reputation on a new site. No more, no less. So I'm sitting here with tons of rep, and 100 reputation on the new site and I'm like Hey! I've earned my stripes, I want to be head honcho here too.
And they're like. No!!!

Do your skills and knowledge on SO translate to more than 100 rep worth of points on Parenting, or Pets, or Islam or any of the other non-programing sites? The association bonus is to get you over the low privileges. It's not to make you a leader in the new community.

Unless I'm mistaken, the 100 rep bonus is just so that you can upvote and comment and flag freely without having to produce content

Or yeah that.

@EricLeschinski did I suggest to make that meta question?

3:29 PM
@JanDvorak My blame assignment algorithm puts 100% of the blame on the first person who suggests a course of action, so that's you.
You should have confirmed my credit-assignment algorithm was more highly evolved before suggesting that maybe the query should be a meta question.

I was referring to @Ferrybig's note about editing spam, if you are referring to the post of mine I think you do

Ah, so it's Ferrybig's fault. ok, reassigning blame to him.

!!/blame

@Ferrybig It's Eric Leschinski's fault.

And it's your fault again :)

3:33 PM
@EricLeschinski Whatever you do, I'll put the blame on you

If you do, that will cause an infinite loop in the blame assignment algorithm as it searches for first cause. All the people who downvoted me have less than half the rep I do. pfft.

@EricLeschinski How do you know? Voting is anonymous :)

How much rep do you have, @EricLeschinski?

I have 50% more than you! Therefore everything I say should be considered law... for you.

@SmokeDetector fp-
@EricLeschinski LOL

Fine then. I have no counterexample against your claim all who downvoted you have less reputation than you do

Nah, he gets to flag every spam post first.

I don't mind that
Now, let's go back to on-topic

@ArtOfCode ahhh sorry I got a new computer and lost track of some old pings... I haven't forgotten about the idea of improving spam detection in general though cc @angussidney

@Pops Any updates/timeline? :)

@SmokeDetector @undo, the MS link, in that report, results in a Routing Error on the MS server.

No... I very quickly decided "yeah it definitely sounds like it's worth working on this" and then kinda stopped moving forward because there were seventy million possible options to actually work on and I wasn't sure which one(s) was best. I'm back on it now though.

@Pops if you missed old pings, you may have missed one of mine - PR stuff. If smokey gets integrated, I can foresee some PR issues when people find out. Have we got a plan on that front? Do you want us to handle all the "but why" and "ermagerd so dangerous" and ping you guys as necessary, or will SE handle it?

@ArtOfCode Good question, but I've been putting off thinking about it for now. I don't think we know enough about what integration looks like yet to know how to prepare. Short answer though, we should be able to do it.

@Pops sure, that's cool. I'm not sure any of us have been seriously thinking about it either, it was just a passing thought in my head.

Another thought @Pops: is it worth, given that y'all seem to think this is a good idea, seeing if you can persuade a dev to hop over to talk out the technical details of possible methods?
