@Quill proper languages do
but you're right, Javascript doesn't

@JeroenVannevel Try Math.Sqrt(10)
It gives me a type error

@JeroenVannevel Yeah, I've been working through the new language chances to try and find a way to do it for a while

12:03 AM
@Phrancis Doesn't matter what function it is, it's still a double argument
But I know what your issue is
You write this:
int y = Math.Sqrt(5);

Post your question in code review site... — Cherubim Anand 21 secs ago

There is no implicit conversion from double (the result of Math.Sqrt) to int
there is one in the other way around
Why?

Hmm that sounds like my issue indeed

Because you don't lose any information going from int to double: all values that an int can have, a double can have as well
But a double can, for example, have a fraction. An int cannot. That's why this is not allowed without explicitly doing so. You can write int y = (int) Math.Sqrt(5); and it will work because you're using an explicit cast now which, in effect, will truncate the fraction if there exists one
And a Square Root function most definitely can have a fraction

Ahhh OK, that clears up a lot of things!
So the truncate basically does a floor on whatever that Sqrt function spits out

12:08 AM
yessir
that's why it's required to be explicit: you're throwing data away

Speaking of numbers....
in Tavern on the Meta on Meta Stack Exchange Chat, yesterday, by Quill
Every time I try to view my grades in Blackboard I get a Java exception about converting a long to an int

@JeroenVannevel Alright, I suppose I'll stick with C# a while longer and see what happens

magic shit is what will happen
when you hit a (perceived) limitation, give me a shout and I'll tell you whether it actually is one and how to work around it

Alright, cool

@Eddie many of us spend time writing programs that do useful things or solve interesting problems, maybe you should try that instead of writing "prank" programs, to practice your programming skills. — Phrancis 2 mins ago
@JeroenVannevel I notice that a lot of code I see on SO that has to deal with lists/collections (more than just very basic stuff) seems to use LINQ, would you say that LINQ is very good at working with list-like structures, more-so than core C#?

@Phrancis LINQ is more expressive and simpler for certain actions.

@EBrown Any thumb rule in determining what actions are such "certain actions"?

@Phrancis Not that I know of, really LINQ is just a better way to write loops.

I'm struggling in some list handling, been browsing Stack Overflow for a while but still not working quite right

2:10 AM
What's up?

Here, better explained graphically, I'm trying to get C:
var A = new List<int>() {2,3,5,7};
var B = new List<int>() {2,2};
//I want to compare B to A, to remove N elements from B that are in A N times
//for instance above would return C: {2}
//A: {2 _ 3 5 7}
//    | | | | |
//B: {2 2 _ _ _}
//C: {_ 2 _ _ _}
It's kind of like Except but with a twist that will preserve additional occurrences of an element in B that is in A

Hmm...

@EBrown Yeah I thought the same thing. I tried to even picture it in SQL and couldn't make it make much sense
From SO I came up with something like this

Are they both sorted, by default?

2:19 AM
            // Source: stackoverflow.com/a/5012027/3626537
            var factorsLookup = EmptyLookup<int, int>.Instance;
            factorsLookup = primeFactors.ToLookup(F => F);
            remainingFactors =
            (
                from groupA in factors.GroupBy(A => A)
                let groupB = factorsLookup[groupA.Key]
                from A in (groupA.Count() < groupB.Count() ? groupA : groupB)
                select A
            ).ToList();
            remainingFactors.Dump();
@EBrown Yes they are sorted
Problem with above is that, well, it outputs something like this (there's a bit more code than above)
Maybe it's a different problem

var a = new List<int> { 2, 3, 4, 5};
var b = new List<int> { 2, 2 };

var c = new List<int>();

foreach (var n in b)
{
	if (a.Contains(n))
	{
		a.RemoveAt(a.IndexOf(n));
	}
	else
	{
		c.Add(n);
	}
}

a.ForEach(x => Console.WriteLine("A: " + x));
b.ForEach(x => Console.WriteLine("B: " + x));
c.ForEach(x => Console.WriteLine("C: " + x));
Just do that.

OK I'll give that a spin, that seems way simpler, thank you

One line:
b.ForEach(n => { if (a.Contains(n)) { a.RemoveAt(a.IndexOf(n)); } else { c.Add(n); } });
You could make it an extension method.
	public static List<T> ExceptExact<T>(this List<T> source, List<T> exceptions)
	{
		var result = new List<T>();

		foreach (var el in source)
		{
			if (exceptions.Contains(el))
			{
				exceptions.RemoveAt(exceptions.IndexOf(el));
			}
			else
			{
				result.Add(el);
			}
		}

		return result;
	}
var a = new List<int> { 2, 2, 3, 4, 5};
var b = new List<int> { 2, 2, 2 };

var c = b.ExceptExact(a);

a.ForEach(x => Console.WriteLine("A: " + x));
b.ForEach(x => Console.WriteLine("B: " + x));
c.ForEach(x => Console.WriteLine("C: " + x));
Bam.
Now you can reuse it all day every day.
I'm making this a CR post.

Q: Removing exact instances of elements in one list from another

@EBrown My thing names were a lot longer so I ended up breaking the one-liner up, looks like JavaScript now (sorry)
            primeFactors.ForEach(n => {
                if (factorsTempCopy.Contains(n)) {
                    factorsTempCopy.RemoveAt(factorsTempCopy.IndexOf(n));
                } else {
                    remainingFactors.Add(n);
                }
            });

@Phrancis Just use the extension method.

I should probably do that
Who knows I might have uses for it later :)
C# supports naming methods the same if they have a different signature, right? e.g., public void FooBar(int val) and public void FooBar(string val)

what can you say about this

The Scripters

Proposed Q&A site for a q&a site for those who are in interested to know about ancient scripts.

Currently in definition.

3:35 AM
@microbuster Looks like it's about writing or glyphs.

ya
its about scripts

Hmm, could be interesting, if there are experts around to answer

its proposed by me
@Phrancis well we have to find them

Right

do you know someone
who is interested

3:37 AM
I suppose it will be a matter of supply meeting demand, do you know if the demand for something like this is good?

i.e., lots of people having questions about ancient scripts
I don't know anyone personally, no
I have a feeling that a lot of this is possibly already covered in other areas, like Wikipedia and related sources or academic papers
I followed it and shared to my Facebook
I find the topic interesting, though I can't think of any specific question that comes to mind right now

@Phrancis I have a more generic version ready.
The parameters are now IEnumerable<T>.

@microbuster you might consider checking this stack and see if people are interested

And it no longer modifies the exceptions themselves, but uses a temp List for that.

3:43 AM
@EBrown Can I suggest including the output of that for reference?

@Phrancis I did.
Oh wait, you mean the actual Console.Write?

Yes

Done.

Very nice what you came up with, I'll include that extension method in my utilities
@EBrown would it work as good if one did var c = a.ExceptExact(b); ? (note the swapping of b and a)

@Phrancis Try it. ;)
var d = a.ExceptExact(b);
D: 3
D: 5
D: 4
@Phrancis See edits to question.
Also, it should work on any type of List.
That is, List<string>, List<Foo>, etc.

3:56 AM
Very nice

Or, any IEnumerable<T> for that matter.

@Phrancis it's a tool to be used like any other. If your issue is solved with LINQ (and it typically is) then there's a good chance you can just use that
Once you start having something more complicated then it might be worth it to just write it out with traditional loops though
to preserve clarity
it depends on the situation. I personally would write an algorithm like that out in full, otherwise it'd be hard to read in a few months

@N3buchadnezzar Why would you do that? What on Earth and the universe could bring someone to a point where they do that?

A power outage?
Zombie apocalypse?

Laptops and phones to the rescue!
Well, with a zombie apocalypse I will probably be dead by the time I am forced to... interact... with people.

@Sumurai8 Braaaaiiiinzzzz

5:22 PM
@Sumurai8 Pokémon Go?

@skiwi Until you get robbed. >.>

@EBrown Pretty much... I hope the hype dies down pretty quickly
I can't exactly describe why but I cannot say a good word about it

The lady I've been talking to absolutely loves it.
"I'm going out to catch an Eevee!" "Just don't get shot, eh?"
4

i'm thinking about getting it
But as @skiwi/@Mast know I have a very strong opposition to PTW, so...

@DanPantry This is more like RTW

5:32 PM
I'm also not so hyped that there's absolutely no interop with existing games

Run to win

That it's just a standalone game

You can either outrun the robbers, or pay them directly

And then she's like, "It's perfectly safe!" "No, it's not. You're going out, at 11PM at night, to find a widely sought after Pokemon, which is completely known to all of the public."
It's a predators dream.
All these young kids will be on Pokemon GO, trying to find all these cool Pokemon, and now predators have exactly what they need to find them.

@EBrown To think I used to vie for the day where a) Pokemon would be a popular discussion point and b) people would go OUTSIDE and play it. WITH EACH OTHER.

5:35 PM
They should just package the game with a pocket knife so people can settle their disputes over a Pokemon.

But actual Pokemon games, not this standalone mobile nonsense
Get off my lawn

I also strongly disagree with giving young kids the option to go into any important buildings, like a police station, etc. They are too young to make the decision if they should do that or not

what the frick will they find in a police station? lol
Gym Leader Team Rocket?

MewTwo

lol

5:36 PM
@DanPantry Just wait until there's a rare pokemon on your lawn

I don't have a lawn, I live in the UK. Lawns are fictional
My lawn is actually the road.

Personally, I think the idea is great, but it needs a lot of work to ensure people are protected.

I would like to see it actually have some interop with the rest of the franchise
Maybe that will come with pokemon Sun & Moon

I need to find my NDS now.

@EBrown One way to ensure that is to stay inside... Oh wait, that was the entire point of the game

5:37 PM
I need to buy an NDS now.
Maybe if I get the Riot job I'll use my annual gaming fund on it lmao

@skiwi I just worry for friends/family that I know will be playing it.

@DanPantry Spend it on Dota 2 skins :))

@skiwi lol
I don't even play DoTA2
though I guess that would make it even better

The last thing I want to see in the news is that someone is kidnapped/murdered/attacked because they were seeking a rare Pokemon.

5:41 PM
Awesome. Just what I needed to start my day.
I think I need a Skype bot which sends me messages when certain things appear in the news.

@EBrown It's already been on the news here too
It's not even officially released yet here...

Q: Creating json objects with undefined properties

Matt WebbI have the following snippet code which, within a loop, creates a JavaScript object where some of the properties maybe undefined: reader.on('record', function(record) { let p = record.children; let player = {}; // below we create a dy...

Yuch, who's the one who invented this wet thing named "rain" ? :(

You're like 70% made out of the same thing as rain.

it doesn't mater
rain is evil
I don't know who developed it

Sometime I HATE latex. Been struggling generating a bibliography for a few hours now

Q: Export class instances to a string (for sharing, backup) and importing them

Anya AlstreimI have a class (Patient) with many instances.. I need a way to share the instances with other users, so I thought of converting the instance into a string and sharing it, then reconverting it into an instance From instance to string func ToString(pt: Patient) -> String { let myarray: [Strin...

6:17 PM
I've made my CV in latex. I said I won't use it again. Like, EVER

Zak
@N3buchadnezzar Well, at least now you know to take them. Photograph everything when you move in. Photograph everything when you move out. Won't stop some landlords, but does make it more likely you can successfully sue them over it.

@Zak Yeah. Luckily I move in with some friends for about a year. They are pretty laidback so everything should be fine. However I will for sure take pictures next time I move.
It's alive, it's alive!
I feel like Frankenstein now. My code looks like a monster, but it compiles and is alive! Muhahaha

6:42 PM
@Dex'ter so is mine
looks pretty af

@JeroenVannevel you changed your name or I'm getin' insane ? ^^

@Dex'ter His name is exactly the same as before ^^

ohh, that's probably because it's sunday. It's the last day when I can stop thinking
well, not entirely

What do you think my name was before?

meh, I don't know. I might have associated your face with another name =) My bad.

6:51 PM
TIME TO TEST MONOPOLY

weee, did you finish it ?

Not quite
But I'm getting there.

you're doing it in right ?

Yeah, with XNA as the graphics engine.

Whooo soccer
@EBrown Is it just movement or have you implemented the chance cards as well?

6:55 PM
@N3buchadnezzar At the moment, it's pretty much everything. It's just...badly done. I need to clean things yet.
The only thing not done is multiplayer.

I guess there exists a breed of people who enjoy single player monopoly.. A very special breed.

> The XNA Framework encapsulates low-level technological details involved in coding a game, making sure that the framework itself takes care of the difference between platforms when games are ported from one compatible platform to another, and thereby allowing game developers to focus more on the content and gaming experience.

Just joking, great job!

it sounds nice and fancy

XNA was nice and fancy, until they discontinued support for it.

6:57 PM
why did they do that ? it sounds really nice

Lack of use.
It was expensive to maintain, and not really profitable.
DirectX was far superior to XNA.

well, sincerely it's the first time I hear about it but it's quite interesting what this framework has to offer

XNA was basically a managed DirectX.

A: Guessing game in Java - Take 3

skiwiOverall your code looks okay, nothing much to comment on it as a whole. I'd like to add the following comments though: The variables in your Jar class should be final where possible, I would change them to the following: private final String itemName; private final int numberOfItems; private f...

I guess my answer isn't going to get simpler than this
Also first answer since 28 June 2015!

7:27 PM
@DanPantry You need sun for a successful lawn, which is also fictional in the UK.
6

@Mast Ooh the burn
Except without sun your lawn cannot really get burned

We have 2800ml rain a year, wop wop.

7:42 PM
@N3buchadnezzar we have that per month so... lucky you

@Mast thanks for the edit

@Dex'ter Unlucky you! I think over 2000 inches is bad enough :p

yea' well, that's life
:(

@Dex'ter Congratulations on reaching 1k rep!

7:54 PM
thanks a lot! I've also received my first golden badge ^^

@Dex'ter Wait, a month? That is like impossible. Unless you live in Cherrapunji.
Seems like there is some confusion over the units.
Well on average Cherrapunji only has 11, 777 mm, far from 12*2250

@Mast we get sunlight!
i believe the rest of the world calls that the moon though
