RELOAD! There are 2477 unanswered questions (92.9663% answered)

crap we're under 93%

we should do some bounty community challenges for zombie killing

sounds good.
I could get me those 200 rep back that I put into a bounty today

getting back to 94% would be a nice goal
My estimate says if 15 people reviewed three things a day, on our current rate, it would take about 250 days to clear all the unanswered questions
It would only take a week if we had 120 people reviewing 3 things a day
If we could get 15 people doing 8 reviews a day, we could clear the queue in a month
My math puts us getting to 94% after 55 days of 10 people answering four questions a day
For reference, the formula I'm using for percentage is:
$let$ currentTotal = $total +(rate \times x)$
$daysToNinetyFour=(currentTotal - (\frac{currentTotal }{100}\times94)) - ((people\times answerRate) \times x)$

^^ Finally, a use for ChatJax.

Ha. It's the first bookmark on my bookmarks bar, but it's the first time I've used it

wtf is it with those "pre 2011" answers?
oh well... almost 3AM I should sleep..

yeah... that's really strange
@Vogel612 I might do up a gist later, want me to ping you about it?
Oh. Maybe they're answers from migrated questions

12:50 AM
1 message moved to Trash

free flag on that, btw

Meh, just garbage really
Oh you mean on SO, yeah sure

yeah

Thought you meant to flag poor @Duga there for a minute :)

That has a few more consequences as a mod... ;-)

12:52 AM
@Quill Maybe we need a so-called "Xmas in July"
@Quill got any ideas?

We could ask SE for some event swag or give away rep bounties (provided a/some kind donor/s is willing) and have a site event for killing unanswered zombies, best answers (whether quality and/or killing old zombies) during that time win prizes
I'm against the idea that "answer count" should win anything, because counting something usually results in low quality

Not sure if the swag could happen, but I think bounties might do the trick
Maybe get some of the new people answering more

SE usually give swag packs for conferences or events, so I don't see why a site challenge should be much different
Either way quantity is a bit hard

swag was done before
but due to the people who abused it, they don't do it anymore
still, it can't hurt to ask

Quite a few sites do them for cons

12:59 AM
I can give some bounties
one or two

I'm not particularly pleased with the bounties concept either.... it's a gamification and gamification is bad

meh, SE is based on gamification

Hey @Mat'sMug, are you around? We're discussing some sort of zombie killing event and feedback would be cool :)

I'm just tossing this in the air, do you think it's possible that some (or even many) decent to good answers go unnoticed (and thus unrewarded)?
(what with the increased volume since graduation and all)

@Phrancis Yes.

1:12 AM
I think that it's not only possible but it's happening

I'm not really here, off to see the fireworks with my boys (it's Quebec's National holiday tomorrow)

Let me throw together a quick query, it's just a hunch I had

But I like the idea

@Mat'sMug Ohhhh lucky, Joyeuse Saint-Jean :)

I feel like voting has decreased heavily, and part of the attraction of answering is the recognition of a job well done
@Mat'sMug Okay, no worries. Have fun at the fireworks :D

1:14 AM
@Quill You mean me not using my 40 votes did this?
There are other mods to contact, you know.

@Hosch250 It's not about hitting vote limits, it's about people deciding whether or not to vote
@Hosch250 Did Mat'sMug post the original The Mission post?

Well, I've done nothing on the main site other than a couple questions since I started my internship.
@Quill Either him or rolfl.

10,000

That's the limit I set

I was trying to think of a date to start from

1:21 AM
How about site-design?

2034 since Jan 1 16
I wonder if we could get a feed or bot to poll for new answers (in a different room than here)

@Quill yes

@Quill do you know if anyone has tried that before somewhere else on the network?

Cooked and seasoned broccoli with butter tastes great

I wonder if we could get a feed or bot to poll for new answers (in a different room than here)

1:25 AM
Yeah, should be about right

That way those who want to vote but don't have as much time to keep refreshing the Active queue on the main site can just hang there

SmokeDetector runs something similar. They watch the realtime feed on the Stack Exchange home page for posts and then access the posts on that

What is SmokeDetector?

@Phrancis Quill's script

@ardaozkal No, it's not

1:27 AM
pretty buggy so disabled
@Quill not?

SmokeDetector is a bot that some people put together that watches the network for spam
in Tavern on the Meta on Meta Stack Exchange Chat, Nov 19 '14 at 0:00, by The Wobbuffet
http://www.bbspot.com/news/2000/6/php_suspend.html

I remember seeing you somehow associated with it

I'd bet dollars to donuts someone's already made a bot for this

Thinking of writing something up on meta, see what others think

1:34 AM
I don't think "the voting crisis" can be solved with a chatbot
we tried the pimping bot a while ago and it died
bots require people to care, and take time and effort out of their day to vote answers
they're not directly contributing to "a solution" because there isn't really a solution... because there really isn't "a problem" to solve in the first place
whether people decide to vote is a personal issue that moderators and users can rarely influence consistently

Hmm, fair points

people are voting less, is that the "problem"?

I think our reducing answered percentage is an issue, but the root causes can't be explained as "fixed or solid" problems. they're fluid and uncontrollable coincidences

yeah
if we gamify the system more, people might stay here only for that
changing the flow of the system

1:39 AM
Just data points^ that's all

root causes: site traffic slowing, top users leaving or being busy, voting is less
you can argue those with graphs or chat messages, but realistically they're not problems you can "solve" without using a solution that, as @ardaozkai puts it, will change the flow negatively

the first might be investigated more, I don't think that much can be done about #2, about 3, I can't think of a good solution

One question--how are we going to help users keep growing?
As an example, I came here because I didn't understand multithreading.
I learned a lot here, but as I use the material, the answers have been less and less teaching and more and more nitpicking.

the site is about constant learning, most of us have expressed how we've dramatically improved since not only posting questions but from also posting answers

Posting answers helps, yes, but people just can't say something for the Nth time.

1:43 AM
If we don't start the learning early on, then they're not gonna care to stick around

@Quill Oh, we do. I mean, my biggest interests now are Rubberduck (general C#, we could say, with Win32 coming in more and more), and Roslyn.

@Hosch250 yeah, that's why I stopped regular contributing. I don't wanna get all hyped to answer a question only to find inconsistent semicolons or something that I can review
@Hosch250 so you're busy, then.

As far as I know, only Jeroen and I are the main users that work with Roslyn, if we can't get someone from the team over to answer our questions (I learned a lot when I got one).
@Quill Exactly, that's why I don't post as many questions anymore.

I think that @Quill's root causes are not the root causes. They are the outcome of one big cause. Probably #1 there (site traffic slowing).

That's the point I'm coming up to--many of our users will eventually slow down and/or leave because, we could say, they "outgrow" the site.
3

1:47 AM
@Hosch250 but the issue isn't us. the top users that do the site janitorial work, write the good answers are the minority

More traffic = more voting, questions and answers, maybe top users staying.

Are we both getting enough new users to replace them and training them in?

our job isn't to be here forever, our job is to make new versions of ourselves that can do our jobs
4

And, more importantly, making them want to stick around? We had the graduation issue to fight for. What are these new users going to fight for?

@Quill or we can replace ourselves with small shell scripts.

1:47 AM
What is going to make the commit to the site?

@Hosch250 that might be the main reason
why are people here?

I didn't answer questions because I wanted us to graduate. I answered questions because I wanted to

I was here A) because I found I knew nothing, and B) because I wanted to help CR graduate.

Why do people contribute on any of the graduated sites

I burned myself out answering questions on the MS community forums. I found that while I am usually pretty good at teaching, it isn't my thing.

1:49 AM
We probably already get people that just wants to help
but the issue is that the majority that wants other reasons to stay

Fighting for a cause is a good motivation, but it shouldn't be the only motivation

In my time here, we've gained many new users, but we've also essentially lost some big ones.

yes. The site needs a motivation. A good and persistent one.

Swimming to the other side of the pool is a great motivation, but not drowning is also a good one

When drowning is a slow process, it can be hard to know it has happened until it is too late.

1:52 AM
We don't need a big "goal for the future", people should have personal motivations that make them stick around

@Quill Exactly.
But we also need a banner to rally around.

This site needs new users

One of the attractions of CR for me is how loving the users were, whether it was in comments, quality answers, whatever

Anyway, I'm out. TTYL.

@Hosch250 later

1:54 AM
With our top users not around to mentor much, we need to reinforce a culture of positivity and improvement
@Hosch250 see you later

@Quill that is my motive for stack too.
Except SO. SO is not loving.
Hmm, I have a nice idea right now

It's not that Stack Overflow is mean. It's that Stack Overflow is too large to be consistently loving

Stack inviting/hiring/paying/whatever people that are good at reviewing code, once a month etc, and huge news over programming related SEs saying like "Get your code reviewed! We have Name Surname from Company that specializes at Language, reviewing your code". idk it sounded better in my head

@Phrancis what is this SQL sorcery? data.stackexchange.com/stackoverflow/query/503652
@ardaozkal Stack Exchange isn't about the concept of users having to earn their importance via a title like that

yeah. it sounded better in my head.

1:59 AM
Most of the top users here aren't "Industry leaders" that speak at conferences and have millions of twitter followers, but they'll sure pick through your code good
My internet is slow.... chat messages take like 10 seconds to send

I think that this site needs new users, some might stick, some might not. Inviting top names from the industry might have been a good way to get users.

quality content brings new users.. it's about nurturing them when they're here, rather than trying to get as many as possible and hoping for a few good ones

@Quill What do you mean?

concat('query://503650?LookbackDays=##LookbackDays##&MaxPendingEdits=##MaxPendingEdits##&UserId=', OwnerUserId, '|', count(*)) "Edits that would have been rate-limited"

@Yakk I suppose "paranoid" is one way of putting it. Where I work, we take the standard at face value when it says "valid but unspecified state"; so failing to clear the container before reusing it after a move is simply considered an error and won't pass code review, nor will it pass a sufficiently smart compiler. I honestly don't know how common clearing or not-clearing happens to be in current move implementations, and it doesn't seem like an interesting question to me-- very similar to the question of what's in memory after it's been free()d, we simply don't make assumptions about it. — Don Hatch 26 secs ago

Yes the code work,it is supposed to read the values stored into the nodes and print them through the function "print_node". i just wanted to know if the part of the code where i insert each value stored in each node could be made shorter. by the way i didn't know about "codereview.stackexchange.com",i'll be more careful next time — Giorgio M. 21 secs ago
For such general "review my stuff" requests ... maybe codereview.stackexchange.com might be a better place?! — Jägermeister 43 secs ago

Naaa na nanana

@ardaozkal Can I pretend to be watching it when I'm not actually? >_>

@zʏᴀʙiɴ101 yes, but you can't get a tshirt that way

I can't get a T-shirt any way, because I have to be old enough and pay for international shipping.

4:06 PM
@zʏᴀʙiɴ101 1) no (maybe) 2) I think that they pay for shipping

If I want a T-shirt, I'm perfectly capable of ordering one without watching a marathon for hours.
