12:29 AM
hmm
Sanity check
superuser.com/questions/1060959/… am I overstating the risk of PCB damage?

!!no

relatedly
I wonder what ramhound means by ethics party coolers ;)

@JourneymanGeek Autocorrect changed "third" to "ethics"? :-p

third party, I imagine.

12:44 AM
Yeah, I understood contextually ;p
ooh
I blew my nose so hard I threw out my sense of balance

Good job you didn't throw out your brain cell as well ;)

I cannae afford that ;p

Bob
@JourneymanGeek Those look a lot like holes for cooler screws.

THey do
but I'd be cautious about mounting a card through those?

2am here. I'm off to bed. Till tomorrow ...

1:07 AM
Since someone deleted the question while I was answering.... Have a jpg!
Then I went and poked through the Resources tab.... Found the image in there. ^_^;

...and this is why I don't like Ask Ubuntu

A: Does Ubuntu damage USB drives?

mark kirbyThis is mostly an issue with Windows. It thinks it is the only OS in the world and acts out if it detects something it does not understand. Just because Windows says you must repair the drive does not make it true. Any of my drivers used with Ubuntu get this message from Windows, I just say no ...

Just wrong.
"[Windows] thinks it is the only OS in the world and acts out if it detects something it does not understand." and "[Ubuntu] uses diffrent size allocations and adds different meta data that Windows just does not understand, thus it says it is broken."
...so what makes this Windows' fault rather than Ubuntu's fault?
Does Ubuntu not "think it is the only OS in the world" when it writes a format that's supposedly incompatible with a different OS?

1:31 AM
ubuntu has mild RDF ;p

Bob
I seem to find myself defending Windows a lot these days.

1. Yes it does, when you repair the drive it will be formatted. 2. I never said anything about issues with FAT, it is more to do with the way Ubuntu copies files to the drive etc... It uses diffrent size allocations and adds different meta data that Windows just does not understand, thus it says it is broken. — mark kirby 2 days ago
what the whaaaaat?

Bob
Mostly from completely absurd claims.
@JourneymanGeek ...yea. Makes no sense whatsoever.
@JourneymanGeek See the chat conversation there.
Mehrdad is completely right, but... yea. It's painful to read.
in Discussion on answer by mark kirby: Does Ubuntu damage USB drives?, yesterday, by Mehrdad
@markkirby: You realize NTFS is a Windows file system, right? Microsoft invented their own file system and also wrote its own implementation. Linux merely attempted to reverse-engineer it and didn't manage to make it work the way it thinks the file system should behave. Microsoft never claimed it should behave any particular way. Now, a sane person would say the "issue" (call it a compatibility issue or whatever you want) is with Linux; they failed to reverse-engineer it properly. You are saying this is an "issue" with Windows. I... beg your pardon, what kind of logic is that?!

Yea... But the guy has a Tux avatar. What do you expect?

Bob
@JourneymanGeek 2 there reads like "if you write random junk to the FS, Windows has no right to complain"

1:36 AM
lol
might also be nautilus at fault

Bob
Windows says it's broken because it is broken...

Nauilus is an utter piece of garbage ;p

Bob
Not because it feels like it
@JourneymanGeek Eh... the duty of ensuring a consistent FS lies with the filesystem drivers. Whether in the kernel or through FUSE.
If your userspace program can cause corruption on this level then arguably your FS impl is broken.

@Bob meh, if he can hate on a whole OS without proof, I can hate on a file manager without proof.

Bob
Ugh. What I simply do not understand is why that answer is getting so many upvotes. It doesn't even attempt to get into the possible cause (of which there can be many, and many of those will also result in data loss).

1:39 AM
cause M$

Bob
Nope. "It's Windows' fault, definitely. Just ignore it and it'll all be rainbows and unicorns."

essentially it confirms a bias ;)

Bob
Mehrdad's comments of the FS driver not flushing correctly - that is useful technical info.
Even if that's not the cause in this case, it's still a potential reason.
@JourneymanGeek I'm sure I've semi-ranted about some OS or other in a couple of my answers, granted.
Then again, I'm a self-admitted hypocrite.

I typically don't ;p
ok, gnome 2
But seriously people. THAT WAS WARRANTED ;p

Bob
lol

1:42 AM
how come if I swap a drive between two computers I can override the ACE's but if its on a remote computer I can't
something to do with cryptographic keys?

Bob
@JourneymanGeek I'm actually not sure if I have.

What's an ACE? What do you mean by remote computer?

Bob
@CMDEmu More context please.

access control entry

Bob
@JourneymanGeek Access Control Entry I guess
ACL would be the more typical term

1:43 AM
remote as in smb'ing

Bob
@CMDEmu Because you need admin privs on the machine you're "overriding" them on.

Would this be better as a question on the main site? ;)

its notreally a problem just curious
it isnta technical problem
the administrator account has the same SID on any windows pc
so im not sure how admin rights comes into it

Bob
@CMDEmu If it were as simple as the account SID, then there'd be no such thing as network security (see: spoofing)
You must actually have admin privs on the target machine. In a simple workgroup setup that's usually tied to a username+password pair. Not a SID, well-known or otherwise.
Then again, I'm not sure SMB can do that kind of thing anyway.

thats right, if the password and username is the same on both pcs it will not ask for authentication

Bob
1:49 AM
It'd certainly work over RDP.
@CMDEmu It also won't elevate so you're probably running with a restricted security token.
@JourneymanGeek I think this might be the most I've said. Though that's more defending one rather than attacking another.
I try to keep my biases off main :P
Probably a couple more comments though.

Bob
@JourneymanGeek Oh. How's the cold? Feeling better?

I've gone from feeling like I got run over by a truck, to being run over by a small car.

Bob
@JourneymanGeek Hey, that's improvement! :P
Next step: bicycle

nah, large auto, tata nano, auto, motorbike, moped, cycle...
heh, overwatch is one of those games. The game isn't quite my thing, unless you can play against bots (co-op?) The universe is interesting.

Bob
1:59 AM
@JourneymanGeek o.O
Wasn't it quite heavy on the team-play?

Uhh... really wanna get in on Overwatch!

Bob
I rarely do PvP unless someone drags me into it :P

I rarely do MP unless someone drags me into it ;p

Bob
*drags JMG into a game*
I'll drag people into co-op.
Or pick up single-player by myself.
But PvP... rare.

2:02 AM
lol
I do sometimes get help when I'm stuck tho ;p
(also, I need ashes of the singularity walkthroughs, stuck on a mission ><)

Bob
@JourneymanGeek I haven't even had a chance to start on missions yet :(
Also, lag.

@Bob there's one where they keep throwing units at you
the opponent is smart enough to go at your engineers and resources
Which means you're basically facing a indefinately large number of units, and can barely keep up
Its doable, but its a massive difficulty ramp up over the previous missions

Bob
@JourneymanGeek Cheat Engine? :P

I don't want to cheat cheat tho

Bob
lol

2:31 AM
got part of it
MOAR unit construction and keep turning them out
forgot to capture the turinium generator so didn't unlock the armoury which was a mistake
2-3 more iterations and I will kick its arse

Bob
@JourneymanGeek Should've seen our first attempt yesterday.
Got absolutely destroyed by 3x easy AI
we had 1x Challenging AI at first
I still haven't really got the hang of it :P
allq and the AI did most of the work

2:53 AM
lol
I get the economy system
just this damned mission ><
I'm very pointedly not helping my dad paint ;p
(By which I mean I'm helping him while pretending not to)

Bob
3:23 AM
o.O

@Bob basically I fetch things as needed

Bob
ah
I'll be playing painter's assistant (again) in a few months :P
@JourneymanGeek not sure if the fumes are bad for the cold or if the cold helps with the fumes :P

@Bob We're using 'odorfree' paint

Bob
o.O

possible SoASE total conversion mod to try next week

3:31 AM
amusingly?
I think I have the cd for the original game somewhere

Bob
We're never going to finish SCL are we? :P
@allquixotic I'm gonna have to see i I actually have SoASE
Though... I want to get further into AotS too :P

3:50 AM
yeah, AotS seems like a game you can get a lot better at with practice

Bob
@allquixotic I think I need to seriously look at moving up the Win10 upgrade, too. Part of it is me not knowing what I'm doing, part of it is teleporting cursors and missed clicks/drags :\
(Granted, mostly me not knowing what I'm doing, but getting rid of the frustration would help.)
I can't remember the last time I played a game consistently below 30 FPS.

@allquixotic resource management, and working out exactly how many units you can spam ;)
Its frustrating the right way

we could just run vanilla Sins of a Solar Empire: Rebellion
less buggy than Armada 3

Bob
I'm still not sure I have it
lemme check
> Sins of a Solar Empire Rebellion
9.99 USD
ok apparently yes o.O

honestly, I like SoaSE more than AotS.
older Stardock game, but better imo

Bob
3:56 AM
@allquixotic so... is it an RTS?
Co-op or just standard multiplayer?

@Bob SoaSE is a "4x" RTS

Bob
@allquixotic Older = I might actually be able to run it :P
@allquixotic 4x?

eXplore, eXpand, eXterminate, eXsomethingelse

it has light elements of diplomacy, longer term strategy, smarter unit AI (so less micromanagement), longer games overall (less focus on actions per minute)
and it has this awesome feeling of tension as you're playing it
long periods of relative peace, then you get hit in the face with a huge fleet
also there's the concept of commitment
if you're going on the offense, you have to commit your forces, which always leaves you strategically vulnerable somehow
and it's almost impossible to "undo" once you commit
so scouting is important too

Bob
o.O

3:58 AM
and there are units that level up with experience, important ones that will hurt a lot if you lose them
you get invested in individual units and sometimes even structures (starbases)
very expensive upgrades and such

I played the original Sins game, was fun... Except I'm way too impatient for the 4X genre.

also there's a very deep tech tree

4:32 AM
@Bob around?
or @JourneymanGeek

4:46 AM
wandered off for lunch ;p

Bob
@allquixotic ya?

@Bob I'm trying to write an app to do some speech recognition over teamspeak for a deaf guild member O_O
teamspeak client -> plugin -> copy voice data -> recognize -> transcribe into a webpage with usernames

Bob
5:02 AM
o.O
@allquixotic Sounds like it's not going to work so well with typical colloquial language

or accents
I do wonder if you could somehow 'just' pass it as a stream into some TTS thing
I'd be willing to see if it handles dog if it breaks with my accent XD
Also the fact that it needs to work for/with multiple users at once.

Bob
5:24 AM
@JourneymanGeek I thought that's what he was trying to do?
Pass it into Dragon or something.
Also, it'd be speech recognition.
TTS is the wrong way :P

Bob
lol

spinx might be an option I suppose

Bob
Unfortunately most speech recognition relies on the person speaking fairly slowly and clearly

mornin

Bob
5:28 AM
'lo

s/fairly slowly and clearly/speaking human
I am a complete underachiver

Bob
o.O

6:12 AM
@Bob Google's Web Speech API is pretty good.

Bob
@allquixotic I've never used it...
Telstra in the CBD during business hours is only some 10Mbps down average. Massive dip in the middle.
Vodafone is 18
But Telstra is consistently lower ping.
O_O
@kerbalspacebecky I actually get much lower speeds, both up and down, from the S7 directly.
Even though it should theoretically support LTE-A where the wifi device doesn't.
Maybe it just landed on a congested band...
@allquixotic Have you tested it with, say, a recording of normal chat?
Would be easier than implementing a plugin only to find out it doesn't work well.

7:06 AM
@Bob good idea, should do

LTE signal isn't great here. 6.0 Mbps down, 4.4 up. 44ms ping.
(AT&T LTE service, tested with OpenSignal.)

8:40 AM

9:16 AM
ugh
Manged to handle the air swarm by building a load of AA cruisers. Got taken down by the horde after
I didn't quite manage to build my basic factory close enough to protect the southern power generator tho

Hmm. That comic links to an Amazon book.

How do I find out what's binding to port 80?

what os?

C:\windows\system32>netstat -anb

 Active Connections

  Proto Local Address Foreign Address State
  TCP    0.0.0.0:80             0.0.0.0:0              LISTENING
 Can not obtain ownership information

oh windows?

9:26 AM
Server 2012 Essentials

ahh
wierd

I thought it was IIS, but I removed it... and still nothing.

Bob
That's probably HTTP.SYS
It mediates a.. bindings to port 80 IIRC
Things like AD FS use it.
IIS also uses it.

Q: How to disable System service from listening on port 80 in Windows Server 2003

Miky DinescuI'm trying to install a service on a Windows Server 2003 machine which is supposed to listen on port 80 but it fails to start because some other service is already listening on that port. So far I've disabled the IIS Admin service and the HTTP SSL service but no luck. When I run netstat -a -n -...

That blog post seems promising. :)

Could anyone help me make a windows bootable usb from linux...I've tried the below, and the pc isn't booting from usb
8
A: How to make bootable pendrive for Windows 10 from Ubuntu?

ErhannisI tried dd. Didn't work. Tried unetbootin. Didn't work. Looked for winusb. Couldn't find it, and heard it doesn't work for win10, anyway. But! This did work for me! http://onetransistor.blogspot.com/2014/09/make-bootable-windows-usb-from-ubuntu.html Note that I had to add "--force" on th...

9:41 AM
@deostroll alas, I tend to make both my windows and linux install disks from windows.

9:55 AM
yawn
@deostroll the problem i've found personally i some usb keys just WON'T boot.
If that's your issue, the only cure is a diff key
Also, I've had bios's that list 'usb' as a boot option, that never works
then you realise once you connected a bootable iso/image, it actually added another option to the list you missed!

ahh there's that
I might have an old question on that...

That last one happened to me once, spent a few hours prior wondering why it wouldn't boot trying difference devices etc.

Bob
10:11 AM
There, that's my answer for the month sorted :P

mornin @kerbalspacebecky and @Bob

Bob
10:27 AM
'lo

@djsmiley2k <sulks> Where is my good morning? ;)

10:41 AM
@djsmiley2k Morning

10:59 AM
@djsmiley2k @JourneymanGeek I followed the blog instructions. That worked. Formatted my usb as fat32 and then performed stuff...however, I still have to run installation and see for myself..

11:20 AM
@DavidPostill awwww srry, good mornin!

Bob
11:34 AM
brainwhale lol

that's a fun mission
I think right before they toss you in the deep end

Bob
@JourneymanGeek ...ya... my engineers aregetting massacred :(
I don't like hold-your-ground missions lol

Bob
annnnd bombers

11:52 AM
the AA corvettes work a treat against them
about 6 would do

I see y'all gaming...

Problem is while I focus on that and more engies...
You get hit by a MASSIVE horde of enemies
and your defensive batteries are shit

Bob
12:05 PM
@JourneymanGeek ...yea
I got some 3/4 of the way to completion on the first try
but got completely overwhelmed
how the hell do I stop that many o.O

@Bob a Twitch streamer called Quill was paid by Stardock to stream AotS for a few hours
...he failed mission #2 three times on stream
never actually beat it

Bob
@allquixotic What, the brainwhale one?
...that was pretty easy
The one after it, on the other hand

@Bob The worst part is I'm getting closer and closer to getting it every time
ITS TAUNTING ME

Bob
also, I can't read the loading screen tips cause it loads too fast -_-
first world problems anyone?
I think I need more armories. And more zeuses.

I'm guessing pair of factories close to the slope, pair of factories at the south generator
pump out units

Bob
12:08 PM
And more metal... dammit.

They keep taking out your extractors
then your engineers ;p

Bob
@JourneymanGeek The brutes just got squashed -_-
@JourneymanGeek ...yea. I think I started dying when the bombers came
Started rebuilding then the next wave came

@Bob the AA guns are shit
the AA corvettes did a better job

Bob
@JourneymanGeek Oh yea, I had those rallying to the south too
whoops
Other mistake: building towers I was already given

the orbital one?
which is totally useless it seems...

Bob
12:10 PM
@JourneymanGeek Nah, quantum generators

ahh
quantum generators are ok, if you could use buffs outside logistics
My forces die too fast for that to be useful

Bob
@JourneymanGeek They aren't even available!

yup!
I could TOTALLY use instant engineers

Bob
@JourneymanGeek I can't even afford them...
Always the first to die

Bob
12:14 PM
Do bombers ever hit south?
I haven't seen any

which is tactically brillianr
nope

what game is this and is it free?

Ashes of the Singularity and no.

890 rupees. O_O

Its a brand new marquee AAAA game ._.

12:16 PM
Gotta buy gaming gear first. No graphic card here.

Maybe I will be able to buy something out of my pocket.
That day is not long away.

Bob
@kerbalspacebecky T-Mobile S7:
That's APC8

@jokerdino heh, I kinda know how that feels

Bob
I assume they're the same changes we got.

12:19 PM
Well that or having to save like over a year for a new box ;)

Bob
@JourneymanGeek If any one of us bought the 4-pack... :P
So much for planning ahead.

@Bob considered it, wasn't listed ;p

Bob
@JourneymanGeek I forgot to ask you -_-
When I bought it

Yup
And I was totally
"Should I buy this?" "Aww f. I haven't spent anything since jan. the hell with it"
Actually
I ended jan with a 50 dollar note in my wallet
I then found 23 dollars in a supreme commander tin ;p
and this really feels a lot like it
;p
Now if the universe could point me at the perfect job.... ;p

Bob
lol

Bob
12:59 PM
...dammnit

@Bob Interesting

Bob
@JourneymanGeek I was maybe 15 seconds from winning :(
3 bars left on the turinium

Wonder if it fixes the "Camera failed" bug

Bob
From one mistake
...I neglected air defences down south
Did not expect that massive bomber swarm
More accurately, my token air defence was accidentally grouped with the west force :(
@JourneymanGeek I finally realised there's massive metal deposits west and north :P

1:01 PM
ahh
oh?

Bob
North is easy. West kept getting traded back and forth but gave me some breathing room
@JourneymanGeek I was basically watching my base slowly fall apart and the bar slowly approach the end :P
The two repair centres next to the nexus kept it alive a really long time
@JourneymanGeek Did you end up finishing that one?

Bob
o.O
I'm hoping I can get it next try :P

Hmm.
Wonder if I can make the SGS7 do Cat 10 LTE
The SoC is advertised as capable of Cat 12+13 support, but the phone is only advertised as Cat 9. On the other hand the advanced menus have an option for Cat 10 and Rel 11 support, both of which are disabled out of the box
> 4K video capture and playback / Up to 1080p 320fps / H.265(HEVC) support
o_0

1:17 PM
good morning..

Q: Keys all switched on keyboard

Google ServicesMy friend/enemy switched the keys on my keyboard as an April fool's joke. When I press Y, Z appears on the screen. Some keys work like b, x, g, i, d, and a few more. Also, when I press ctrl, it returns Enter. Even the function keys are switched!! I called a technician and even he wasn't able to...

lol

^-- some srs STUFF
@DavidPostill: Why is he using the G+ logo? wtf
lol

@Bob WTF
> How long to build it?
The superccarrier Gerald R. Ford took 8 years in being built on earth. Space has extra challenges.

Bob
lol

Well, yeah, space definitely has a ton of "extra challenges", but referencing the build time of a terrestrial aircraft carrier is hardly relevant

1:30 PM
@Bob got stomped by the horde again

Bob
@JourneymanGeek Which one?
The first big swarm?

They come in waves?
I managed to totally neutralise the air guys
apparently putting the AA guns a little back helped

Bob
@JourneymanGeek I have no idea which horde you're talking about :P

@Bob the point when they start rushing you with tones of small units and yoy get the medical stuff

Bob
@allquixotic I'm not seeing a way to change difficulty?
Also I think you're basing the multiplayer experience off the easy AIs we fought :P

1:51 PM
Please stop talking about the shoe!!!!!
It's a guitar man, A GUITAR!!!!

ROFLMAO
That adds meaning to "kerbalspacebecky !!shoedave dbo.dave"
@Dave: Morning Dave compadre?
