I just got a failed review audit for closing a question that obviously should be closed
"This question is off-topic as it appears to be a mathematics problem, as opposed to a mathematical puzzle. For more info, see "Are math-textbook-style problems on topic?" on meta."
why do i even bother?

user61230
@xnor Review audits are automatically picked, and sometimes aren't selected correctly. Don't worry about it; it's not a huge deal.

user61230
I've closed the question, which makes it ineligible to be an audit in the future.

thanks, i don't care about the review failure, it's just confirmation that my efforts to clean things like this up are wasted when things like this are considered good questions
this was posted this month...

Yeah, I get what you mean :\

Q: Puzzling Design Pitch - Congratulations, you're graduating!

Stéphane MartinI'm Stéphane, a senior product designer at Stack Exchange. First, I wanted to announce that this site is now starting the process of moving out of beta to become a fully-graduated site! Congratulations! Graduation and Your Site Design Graduation comes with a few perks, which should come out...

WHOOOOOOOOOOO.

user61230
HYESSSS.

11:20 AM
@Emrakul We finally made it.. :)

oh wow, neat

Can we suggest things to them?

user61230
Yeah, definitely! Feel free to.

I really like that proposed design

Maybe I am gonna miss our current logo

11:31 AM
the double question marks?

yup

user61230
It's gonna be a weird change.

the only problem I have with the ?? is (beside the fact that they look generic) that they don't give a good indication of what site it is if you don't already know.

user61230
Which is, a little ironic, I think. (If, still pretty unhelpful.)

11:33 AM
yes

This maybe?

definitely ironic
I like the one they proposed (even if it doesn't necessarily shout "puzzles!")
but I mean, the one for the math SE doesn't look like "math", but it's distinct and looks good
just as an example

I just need that question mark in the logo...It is the only thing that makes me stick to this website..

but when I just see question marks, I think "oh, this is the website with the questions" which... not terribly specific for an SE site, is it

The question mark makes me feel like there is something mysterious here...

user61230
11:37 AM
To be fair, not many sites' thumbnails are immediately descriptive.

yeah, that's why I mentioned the math.SE one, as an example

user61230
AskUbuntu's is, literally, "ask."

it's a hexagon, made of cubes
hahaha yeah

user61230
...wow, we really have grown. We're the second most active beta (in QPD).

what's the most active?

user61230
11:39 AM
Arduino, actually.

oh wow. who knew?
(probably all the people on arduino)

This maybe?

12:02 PM
I think our icon should be your ms paint picture of shin chan

true

I have a confession to make, manshu.
I don't even know what shin chan is.
Like, I recognize the character, but I have no context for its existence.

it is japanese cartoon character

I gathered that much.

You will gather more once someone will make a puzzle about it
lo;
lol
That is the most funniest cartoon character I have ever seen

12:48 PM
Congratulations, you're graduating! Fantastic news. I thought that we would have to wait for this much longer...

we're*

A puzzle piece, of course, manshu =D

:D

Hah, if I can take that mockup literally....
Having keys for our badge icons looks really neat

yeah...that's cool
look at the 5th pic in that post...i can see two cursors there....how is it possible?

12:58 PM
It's a pure mockup. If you notice, Alconja's puzzle about being in a waking dream was posted "5 minutes ago"

not only that...Every single puzzle was posted 5 min ago

true enough
Though - to be completely fair, it IS possible to have multiple mouse cursors =D

Alconja's puzzle have 21 answers
haha

hah

will be closed for being too broad
haha

1:03 PM
21 answers in 5 minutes? I'd say so, hahaha

That is the reason this community is graduating

bemused look at the meta post

1:34 PM
I fail to see any reason why this failed review (puzzling.stackexchange.com/review/first-posts/18242) is not a math problem per the description in meta.puzzling.stackexchange.com/questions/2783/… . Even the answer states that it's solved with "Simple algebra". There's no "clever solution", or "unexpected result" here.

2:12 PM
yeah that's weird
I've also been temp-banned from reviewing due to decisions that couldn't have gone through without another person's approval and yet the other person wasn't banned from reviewing

Yeah - this one seemed like a bit of a scam, too. It gave a post that (in reality) earned tons of up-votes due to the poster's rep and told me it was a first-time poster. I reviewed it as a first-time poster, as I was asked to do.

yeah, that's the thing: you aren't actually supposed to review the thing on its own merits - you're supposed to correctly guess how the people who spend the most time reviewing posts would review it

Seems that way.

Q: Best puzzles of 2016 Q1 (January - March)?

BmyGuestThis question is part of the best-puzzle award series. What are your nominations for the best puzzles, here on Puzzling.SE, of the fourth quarter (Jan/ Feb / Mar) 2016? Suggested guidelines for nomination: Nominate each individual puzzle in a separate answer, so they can be upvoted/down...

and it's not a coincidence that the venn diagram of people who spend a lot of time reviewing posts overlaps with people who would have upvoted/prevented from closing a post from a longtime user
there are meta discussions about this where people have been like "uh, I gave honest reviews but I got banned from reviewing because I happened not to agree with the others" and the response has been "shut up or get off the site, whiner"
so, you know, [world's biggest shrugging emoticon]\

2:19 PM
Yeah - the entire point of having a review process is because not everyone is going to have the exact same opinion of what should be done.
If they did, then we would not review - it would just be one-and-done for closings/openings/etc.

yeah exactly.
again, the idea is that this is a community-run site; the reality is that the bulk of the decisions are really made by a small group of like-minded longtimers
anyway, graduation, woohoo

you guys think it's okay if I post a SE-themed metapuzzle as an answer to the graduation post? I know it isn't normally supposed to be there but I wasn't sure if the Q&A format was less strict for the [discussion] meta tag
(I can add the solution in too if that would help)

that...sounds cool

What if you posted it as a real puzzle, linking to the meta?
Though, I may have misunderstood
"metapuzzle" =D

a metapuzzle is a puzzle using single words or phrases (usually from other puzzles) where you have to figure out how to assemble them to derive a solution word or phrase

2:30 PM
Ah - Sounds interesting - though I think a question like that, for a regular puzzle, was turned down the other day - let me see if I can find it to see if this is what you mean.

I'll either post it as an answer to the meta post or as a regular question - just wanted to know if you all thought the answer option was acceptable

Oh, you answered it, so you're familiar =D

which one
?

The one about the treasure hunt - I think this is different from what you mean.
In opinion, only, though...
Asking a question, in an answer, could make it hard to solve due to how comments display.

Yeah, that's what I was worried about

2:32 PM
yeah that's a good point

It's not like the "treasure hunt" though - this one's fully self contained and the "puzzles" that make it up are just crossword style clues with enumerations

I think it would be odd, though more appropriate, to have the answer link to your question, or have the question link to the meta.

The bulk of it is the "assembly" step

so, what do you all think? should I just post it as a separate question?

2:35 PM
You think people would enjoy solving it, or would you plan to just give the answer?

yeah - it might be less "clever" if it's not presented as an "answer" but it would probably save a lot of confusion if posted as a separate question

@Deusovi I don't think actual puzzles belong on meta, so I'd make it a question on main.

that's my extremely abbreviated but still accurate take

I agree - if you're wanting people to actually solve it - a question

that's what I figured
on code golf someone posted "English: 2 bytes
": t
shit sorry, I'm on mobile
they posted "English - 2 bytes: ty" as an answer
so I figured that something in that vein would be nice - y'know, a friendly response to the SE admins themed after our own site

2:44 PM
aw hahah, that's a great PPCG response

lol

@Khale_Kitha Reviews were designed for Stack Overflow, which has a different set of problems than smaller sites. In particular, there are tons of posts where almost everyone can agree on an action.
I'm actually not sure why we have review audits on Puzzling:
197
A: What are review tests (audits) and how do they work?

Tim PostWhat is the purpose of this test? The test (known as a review audit) is designed to help new reviewers hone their moderation skills, while nudging more experienced users that don't seem to be paying close attention to what they're reviewing. Some people were in the habit of up-voting everything ...

If they are causing more problems than they are worth, we can turn them off here.

@JonEricson Thank you for this, it's helpful to hear

Agreed

@question_asker Maybe a meta post?
Which is to say: if this is a problem, please raise it on meta.
3

@JonEricson Thank you. I may, but things also may be working themselves out on their own; I'm very optimistic.

I'm actually curious why we turned it on without a meta post. But not quite so curious to ask myself. ;-)

3 hours later…
7:17 PM
@JonEricson One thing I'll say, while I'm thinking about it, is: if we're going to be held to our reviews, it would be nice to be able to leave a note if, say, we disagreed with a vote to close or something similar.

@question_asker I can see how this would be an attractive feature and, if we ever went back to look at them, it might be helpful to tuning audits. The trouble, though, is I'm not sure many people would read those notes.

@JonEricson Yeah, I can see that, especially on a site with a much more bustling review queue

They could be in the audits. =D Hahahaha
And we're full circle.

1 hour later…
8:32 PM
How long do I have to wait between edits before it shows in the edit history?

user61230
Five minutes.

Thank you
