Anyone use DRBL before?

5:24 PM
@TylerShads I have a tendency to double DRBL. I end up getting picked last a lot.

For the 3rd time today, I've started to write a SF question, then figured out the answer halfway through writing it.

You should still post them if they're good questions

Anybody have a preferred source of inexpensive 1U servers?

So, come... share in my horror. Neutral <-> ground voltage in my bedroom: 60 volts.

5:35 PM
@voretaq7 Decommissioning room.

@Holocryptic good plan

@ScottPack I would, but I don't want any of our old shit (all 32-bit crap)

@voretaq7 Manufacturer or supplier?

@JeffFerland I have no idea what that means

@JamesOGorman supplier/retailer
preferably in the continental US unless their prices are so low shipping isn't a factor :)

5:37 PM
I use Insight (in the UK). They have a US site but I don't know how competitively they're priced over there :-)

I'm looking @ IronSystems (guys we use for most of our gear at work)

@voretaq7 unixsurplus.com is a vendor at DEFCON shrug

@JeffFerland ...I won't hold that against them ;)

@Holocryptic It means that the difference between my computer case and the earth is 60 volts.

@JeffFerland its FINE!

5:39 PM
For home I find SuperMicro bits on eBay

@JeffFerland Followed shortly by this gem from the monitoring system: DC3 - PDU2 - FAULT - GROUND OVERCURRENT

SuperMicro++. Started using them for my non-$dayjob servers last year.

@JeffFerland WTF?
Someone running a 3 phase motor with one leg each connected to +120, N, G?

@ChrisS Nope... just some scary damn wiring in here.

But how would you get 60v???

5:43 PM
@ChrisS I'm considering that - it's just to replace my 5+ year old mail/web server

I can see 24, 120, 240, etc... but 60 is an odd number.

Me: so, how much do you know about electricity?
Friend: *don't complete the circuit with your body.*
Friend: *I also know, courtesy of CMP "It's never safe to touch a sparkin' wi-ah."*
@ChrisS Hot <-> Ground: 60v. Neutral <-> Ground: 60v

@voretaq7 My home server is pieced together from pieces acquired on eBay.. Runs quite nicely, some SuperMicro MB, came with processors and 4GB RAM for ~$150 shipped. I've been very happy with it.
@JeffFerland That still doesn't make sense.

@ChrisS meh, I'll pull the trigger on this nice Supermicro box on eBay (Xeon 5150, 8GB RAM, 4x250GB SATA)
the old box has become... unreliable (reboots itself randomly - looks like power supply faults)

Odd hardware issues are always fun; best to recycle the old and buy a replacement.

5:49 PM
@ChrisS en.wikipedia.org/wiki/… Closest thing I've found to making any sense so far... but a) what / why the hell? and b) really???

@JeffFerland well, I assume Hot and Neutral are phased such that you're getting 120V out of them...)

@voretaq7 Yes

@JeffFerland then it's actually fine :)
(fucked up, yes, but electrically fine. Don't connect protective earth to Neutral :-)
I had a friend come over and shock his damnfool self last night (I'm rewiring a guitar amp, so it's open on my table. Jackass had a "Ooh, what's this?" moment)

@JeffFerland Still doesn't make sense. Those Technical Power systems are ground isolated. Connecting Hot to Earthground would produce 0 volts <- Which is the intent of the system, to eliminate the potential for ground loops at the power source rather than signal source. I suppose it's possible your socket doesn't have an earthground, which while illegal still wouldn't surprise me.

@ChrisS It's connected to something... and yeah, an isolation transformer that would be used to make a technical ground would keep that from showing potential. I can't figure out why I'd get it on one circuit... kitchen wiring is normal showing less than 2 volts.

5:57 PM
@JeffFerland eugh wait, it's only in part of your house?
THAT'S not kosher

@voretaq7 It'd be cool if it was an electrical outlet at work though?

@ChrisS Well, all the grounds and neutral should be bonded on a bus in the basement.... so if it's not the whole damn thing, then that is an issue too
I'm trying to imagine some sort of cluster where hot and neutral are actually two phases just on this circuit and instead of 208, they're at a different phase that generates 60...

@ChrisS it'd be cool if it was the entire power system (though it'd be a back-asswards application of split-phase power)

120 degrees out of phase will do that, but on one circuit?? Time to spelunk in the basement.

@JeffFerland It sounds like you have a leak somewhere on that leg - If it was broken on ALL the legs I could see it being screwy power distribution, but not just one leg

6:09 PM
I suppose it's possible there's a high resistance leak somewhere, and the leg has some sufficient resistance to ground enough that it pulls the voltage up to 60v (for very low loads only). I'd bet if you connected anythign that drew noticable power to the leg it wouldn't work, say a lightbulb between ground and neutral.

@ChrisS not a bad test before you start spelunking in the basement actually -- If the lightbulb lights you know whatever's causing it can carry current too.
(i.e. "Wear the big gloves")

@voretaq7 Hmm, well, I might be able to cannibalize some wire and I did buy some fuses at radiohack yesterday for my arduino projects...

@voretaq7 You mean put on your big boy hat

Ah, I know... replace the fuse in my multimeter with a 1amp and try neutral <-> ground amp reading!

You could always ignore it, then when you've forgotten about the problem move.
3

6:14 PM
if she blows, that's 60 watts that shouldn't have happened.
2

@JeffFerland There's a joke in there somewhere

@TylerShads Fuse didn't fit, so I just stuck to cables in and put the fuse between them :D

6:45 PM
@JeffFerland ...OhDear

odd...

@Chopper3 Ummmm. wa?
Odd starts to describe it.

7:03 PM
@Chopper3 "Still better than Twilight."
@Iain You're a gem!

yes, very much so

@ChrisS So your lackey did not respond favorably to a judicious application of your LART? What a toolbox.

The related video "12:00 1,2&3" is pretty much the same trailer with different "special" effects.

gibbers too...much...minecraft...

@tombull89 Play Terraria then

7:10 PM
@JeffFerland I remember reading somewhere that the Honda 1000i and 2000i pure-sine-wave inverter generators that are ubiquitous in off-the-grid Alaska actually give you 60V on the hot lead and the opposite 60V on the neutral lead. Stuff still works.
@JeffFerland Could you have a UPS or some other power-conditioning equipment that happens to do something similar?

@MilesErickson No, and I went around unplugging everything too.

@JeffFerland Hmm. The only reasonable conclusion is that Portland, Maine is secretly powered by a gigantic Honda generator.

@MilesErickson But it's only on one circuit branch!

60v on hot and 60v on neutral sounds kinda weird

@JeffFerland Shoot.

7:14 PM
@JeffFerland, try posting on DIY.SE

@JeffFerland Okay, let's work with this. Santa Claus lives in Alaska, and he is nowhere near the grid, so presumably he uses a Honda generator. And, Christmas was just a few days ago. Do you have evidence that he may have visited your facility? If so, magic cannot be ruled out entirely.
3

@MilesErickson I do have a Christmas tree that I use on that circuit...

@JeffFerland BEHOLD THE (split-phase) POWER OF CHRISTMAS!
holy hairballs... my LambdaMOO account hasn't been reaped yet?

That guy looks soooooo sad

@Holocryptic Almost as sad as your kidneys.

7:28 PM
@WesleyDavid Almost. Although I have happy pills. So that makes it better

@WesleyDavid Are you kidding? His kidneys must be on top of the world. Think how jealous all those other kidneys would be to have stones that big!

@ScottPack Does that mean his kidneys are stoned?

No, just me

@WesleyDavid No, I'm implying that his kidneys are well endowed.

@ScottPack And I'm implying that you are a woman.
What are you doing Friday night?

7:30 PM
Me?

@ScottPack Giggity.
See, I shouldn't chat when my blood sugar is low.
This is what happens.

hello bitches, how was christmas?

Speaking of jealous spiderman, I present thehoverhand.com

Scary! Don't touch! Don't look 'em in the eyes!
@pauska relatively quiet. How was yours?

Same here.. at my moms now, just chilling out

@pauska awwww

@pauska 0_o but I just followed you!

We're too easily entertained

@pauska boo hiss

@voretaq7 Cock. I was just about to do that.
Same image 'n' everyfing.

@WesleyDavid you're welcome
and ding 20k this year :)

grats

v pleased

7:58 PM
@Iain I can only hope to match half of you and @voretaq7 in 2012.

so assuming they're not going to go for my little pony memes or jenna marbles, anyone got any thoughts about these community ad things on meta?

@Iain proves that you can keep the snark guns in your holsters and still succeed.

@RobMoir ...MLP and kittehs!

@RobMoir I'm cool with it.

@RobMoir Why wouldn't they promote Jenna's Marbles?

8:00 PM
yeah
because she hasn't posted for help with them on the main site?

@RobMoir "MAH MARBLES ARE BEING DDOS'D BY AN IP HALP!!"

@RobMoir Has she?

nope

I think I just parsed that.
/me gets more coffee.

i need a beer

8:03 PM
mm
I'm stlll on the clock for ac ouple of hours

Need a little less blood in your alcohol stream.

@RobMoir as long as the official twatter feed doesn't get promoted I'm cool

yeah @iain that suggestion has had a few comments

@Iain Really? I thought the official Twitter feed would be one of the better things to advertise to the community. I lurves me some good Twitter feeds.

No animated gifs? Well fuck that....

8:05 PM
i thought it was the feed from the vote to close room at one point

@WesleyDavid The questions I see roll by in the feed aren't that great from what I remember

@WesleyDavid what gets twatted and what's good on SF are not related

oooh it turns out my brother had opened one of my packets of cashew nuts and left half of them when he was here at christmas. It would be rude NOT to have them with the beer

@RobMoir I downvoted it straight away

@Iain Ohh, I get it. Yes, the quality needs to be ramped up. But the general idea is a good one.

8:07 PM
i've essentially been told that if I don't like the official SF twitter feed I should feel free to make my own.

I mean, sure I could, but why can we not just make the official one useful. The one that people are more likely to follow *anyway*

@WesleyDavid It's a bit like the SF newsletter - it doesn't portray us at our best

there's an SF newsletter?

@RobMoir you're better off not knowing.

@RobMoir every site has a weekly newsletter

This is the difference between programmers and sysadmins.

Programmers think everything is just 10 lines of code.

sysadmins remember the last time they were called in 2 days over the weekend because of the last time a programmer thought something really was just 10 lines of code
2
i can see myself needing more beer at this rate
3

8:09 PM
I could get behind a collaboratively edited community twatter feed
2

@Iain I must have the mentality of a hamster, because I generally like the newsletter.

@Iain but how do we deal with the editing part?
@WesleyDavid it's a very mixed bag

I've been saddened by it several times but it really does just depend on what's active

@voretaq7 It involves fencing swords and kipper snacks.

can we create a twitter feed that retweets everything tomtom does?
5

8:11 PM
@RobMoir GOLD!

that would be AWESOME

@RobMoir We'll call it @RageExchange
5

this one could work

@RobMoir Try ifttt

I like where this is going

8:13 PM
@voretaq7 have several people twatting what they think is interesting ?

it could just retweet posts directed at it from "known" accounts?

@Iain I'd like to see something come out of the votes on questions (maybe weighted by voter's rep). That seems like a lot more than 10 lines of code though

Anything you can get an rss feed of, i ugess
unless the ifttt people can be persuaded to write a stackexchange trigger

@voretaq7 I don't think it can be automagic

@ServerFault, The Stack Exchange network
A Q&A site for system administrators and desktop support professionals
20.1k tweets, 343 followers, following 0 users
There's the feed, if you're curious

8:16 PM
gah

@Iain I think there's an algorithm that will work pretty well. It's just that the current algorithm (whatever it is) is kinda brain-damaged...

I think answers should be twatted too

@Iain they are in the current format

@Iain hard to do in 140 characters unless the account @s itself

but it has to be a "great answer"

8:18 PM
Don't "Great answer" tweets already happen?

yes

@voretaq7 The current algorithm is view (and possibly votes though it must not consider downvotes) over some short amount of time... I know bad questions that get all of us gawking commonly get tweeted.

@JamesOGorman how many accepted answers ever make it to "great" though?

@ChrisS yeah, there needs to be a downvote cutoff added

8:19 PM
@voretaq7 not many

there's a difference between popular and great. Someone can write an awesome, complex answer to a good but obscure question that doesn't get much traffic and it will never be seen vs. some tool writing an obvious spiel about website hacking that gets hundreds of votes
8

@JamesOGorman there are loads of truly great answers that don't get 10 upvotes because they are tl;dr
2

@RobMoir I know of a tool like that...

yep

Loser got like 505 votes too.

8:22 PM
i know, right

@Iain Solution: use pictures. Preferrably of lolcats or ponies.
2

@RobMoir When you're panicking the obvious isn't so obvious.

@WesleyDavid that's what Jeff was saying on the podcast - easily assimilated = upvotes

someone mentions ponies, and @Ward drops in. Classic
2

as if by magic

8:23 PM
Derpy is Magic.

Friendship is Magic
Wow, can I derail a conversation or what

Chris - agreed... I wasn't trying to to put myself down as much as I was trying to say there are lots of better answers out there to more obscure questions that have been ignored and would never get promoted by the twitter thing

@Iain I've been putting <hr>, lists, and pics in my postings on SuperUser. Now I'm #2 overall for the week. Oh, and the mass hypnosis thing too...

next month you should try replying with angry, badly spelt snark to all the questions

@RobMoir Trying to get TomTom over there too, eh?

8:27 PM
well... it would amuse me. And that's the main thing
2

@RobMoir I'm seriously considering making a project out of this. January might be "Type like a butterfly, sting like Womble", February might be "Channel Dickens", March "OMG PONIES"
3
Kinda like A/B testing my personality and see what goes over best.

i approve of that message ^

@WesleyDavid Which hurts better, A ::*connects 408V AC*:: or B ::*drops server on foot*::
oh fuck you markdown.

hahaha

8:30 PM
I refuse to fix that. it's perfectly valid markdown.

ponies are the answer

I should change my username to "GiselleButterfly22" and use a headshot of a local model too. Bet that would increase the boats.

You should change your username to Jenna Marbles

@WesleyDavid ...upgrade them to ships?

8:33 PM
@WesleyDavid I already follow someone with Giselle in her name so you can't use that. Plus she's prettier than you.

@Holocryptic No father should ever name his daughter Giselle if he is even marginally interested in her being virtuous.
I've already picked out the name of my first daughter.
Brünnhilde Shieldmaiden David
And if you think I'm kidding...

@WesleyDavid Who said she was virtuous? She's a graphic designer. Do the math.

speechless
hey @Chopper3

hey

interesting idea but doesn't if fail with a canon pictute ?

8:38 PM
yeah

If I saw a cannon icon next to a question, I would assume it stood for "Call in TomTom"
And I would click it.
Over and over and over and over...
My second daughter would be "Skuld Laevateinn David"

@Iain Well we could always use this as the icon:

I demand this as the image and won't accept anything else

not even a pony?

^This

8:46 PM
"If I have to answer this question again I'll shoots myself!"
(Kitty's serious too - he's got his paw on the trigger, not the guard!)

uh huh

/me highfives @ChrisS

@voretaq7 I hate you sometimes

DDoC
Distributed Denial of Catnip

Say Hello to my liddle friend

@Chopper3 WHAT THE HELL IS HE DOING TO HER BEHIND?

@Holocryptic There was a guy talking about how physical destruction of drives is something only newbs do. Real experts use Low Level Formats. It's government approved!

Oh, that

@Holocryptic We had a bit of back and forth, and @ChrisS hopped in with the actual controllers commands, what they do, and why he's an idiot.

8:52 PM
@ScottPack where ?

Also, I feel obliged to report that I am yet again out of stars. Bastards.

A: Permanently delete files from a flash drive

WesleyDavidThe best delete tool that (little) money can buy: EDIT: To counter the detractors No one mentioned the need for government level security, so arguments with that objective are pointless goalpost shifts. This is good enough for anyone who isn't James Bond or Bruce Wayne. P.S. Governments sanc...

And now the dude is talking about fixing bad sectors... sigh

@ChrisS You should go look at his careers and linkedin page.
He fancies himself a Data Recovery Expert.

Dude has been through quite a few different jobs there... all seem pretty low level.

8:57 PM
@ChrisS I thought so too.

(Rude comment removed)

Deleted intul imgur decides to work
@ChrisS Color me a douchecanoe because I do: careers.stackoverflow.com/wesleydavid =)

I shouldn't talk trash

@WesleyDavid Yes well... After a handful of MCITPs a MCTS is more rounding out the picture than leaning on it like a crutch.

anyhoo, I'm off. back later

9:00 PM
@ChrisS I know, I just felt like using the word "douchecanoe"
And @ScottPack and @ChrisS, I'm really enjoying the comments on that answer. Keep it up - I be learninating. I like how some legit IT workers are actually weighing in on a topic over at SuperUser. A nice change.

To be fair, I've never worked a case where I know someone attempted a "BIOS IMPLEMENTED LOW LEVEL FORMAT", so I can't say for sure what that would look like.
That being said, when I say, "worked a case" I mean "in my professional role as a computer forensics investigator".

I'm not especially surprised he hasn't mentioned secure-erase flash media... They make flash drives that will actually erase things (irrevocably) when a sector erase is requested by the OS (still need to have an OS that will pass the erase request on to the disk, as almost none do, at least by default).

@ChrisS I need to get more toys like that in the lab so we can really play with them.

@ScottPack HP computers come with it... It just issues ATA 0x50 (Format) for every sector of the drive. Not especially interesting, and the format command in most OSes has options to do the same thing.

@ChrisS I didn't expect it to be anything mind blowing. Would still be a nice exercise for me to go through.
I have a newish HP in there too. When I'm dong completely fucking up my entire puppet tree to work with 2.7 I'll queueueueueue that one up.

9:07 PM
Anyone want to vote that question / answer for the SuperUser QOTW? meta.superuser.com/questions/3848/question-of-the-week-35 There could be an opportunity to make a blog post about it if @ScottPack, @ChrisS or anyone else wants to take it to the hizouse and tell why a certain commentor is wrong

@RebeccaChernoff So who said what that got flagged?

DON'T KILL ME!

nah nah. I just came to say hi to @WesleyDavid
(;

@RebeccaChernoff cowers

@RebeccaChernoff and by "say hi" you mean "Squirt with the spray bottle until he gets off the counter", correct? :)

9:10 PM
@voretaq7 I was just chasing the ants away, meanie.

Anyone use Asterisk?

the boring version of the story is that I had to restart chrome so I rejoined all the rooms I have marked as a favorite.

@RebeccaChernoff You're right. That is boring.

@Iain Iain, what would I do without you?

9:15 PM
@RebeccaChernoff it's so much more fun to speculate

@Jacob "You are a precious snowflake. This is NOT a place for 'Live Support', ask questions on the main site."

@Jacob blithely ignore This is *NOT* a place for 'Live Support' and deprive the community of excellent questions and their answers

That goes from @Chopper3 down to the newest person that signed up two seconds ago. Talking shop is one thing, and even asking a support-style question once every so often (like, once a month at the most) is probably cool too, but turning it into a support line isn't okay.

I'm still cranky from lovesh and his "I AM HAVENING TO MAEK A FACEBOOK SITE - HOW TO LAMP A SERVER?"

And before anyone mentions it; yes, it's only 5¢ per retweet.... Better than a kick in the a$$ I guess.

@WesleyDavid hmmm
You are in a datacenter. It is very loud.
There is a lamp and a server here.

> get lamp
Ok.

> get server
Ok.

> lamp server
What?

> lamp server
Try using a verb.

Dude, VERB the NOUN!

@Iain You are in the power room. It is very hot. The UPS Control Cabinet is beeping.

@Iain Richard Stallman appears and he does not have shoes on

plugh

When I was younger, 'lamp' was a verb

We should have a D&D night in here. Who wants to be the DM?

@Iain A little devil-like critter appears and starts stabbing Stallman in the ankles

9:24 PM
@growse It still is!

@JamesOGorman Perhaps when referring to illumination equipment...
or stage lights
I can't believe I got 4 stars for that.

@growse as in I'll lamp you if ...

I work with lots of people from East London / Essex. Lamp is a regular term for them.

@Iain I'll lamp YOUR stack you damn...

@voretaq7 s/got/only got/

9:25 PM
Remember folks, verbing weirds nouns.

@growse VERB ALL THE NOUNS!
My favorite error message is still "Verb!"

"I table this motion....."
"Hello darling, I'd like to television you later....."

@growse just as long as you don't motion while you're tabling.

@voretaq7 I like "Interjection! Verbing noun. Article adjverb noun verbed. Expletive."

Q: Elastix(Asterisk) Slow to repsond on incoming PSTN line

JacobI setup a PBX with asterisk and Elastix as a web GUI. I have all incoming calls set to ring to a ring group of our office personnel in a ringall format. The only issue is the time for Asterisk to pickup and pass the phone call to the VOIP phones to ring from our PSTN lines. It takes about 5 rings...

9:35 PM
@Jacob Excellent question. Would upvote again. A-plusplusplusplusponiesplusplus

@Jacob Anything in the asterisk log Is it actually seeing the phone line go ring-high?
we don't actually have PSTN/POTS lines on our PBX (SIP tunnel to the outside world), so I don't know much about how they work. We have the line cards, but just use them as timing sources :-x

@voretaq7 Snowflake.

@WesleyDavid merp?

@voretaq7 Imgur is giving me fits, or else I'd have another cat for you.

@WesleyDavid log all the things?

9:47 PM
@voretaq7 Oh, it's a 2.2 MB gif, that's why. How on earth is something that small that big?
First person to say "that's what she said" gets checked into the boards.
Well fine, have this instead:

(1.4MB)
that's it.

@WesleyDavid I think chat would be a touch slow for that... MapTool and Mumble would be much more efficient.

This question has "uh oh" written all over it.

Oh goodie! I get to buy a .xxx domain. Client wants to protect their brand.

@growse Virtualize all the things!

9:56 PM
Do you think we could install ESXi within this chat?
I'll go grab the ISO

I've had thoughts of starting a campaign online again. The last one fell apart (long story short I was the campaign designer and another guy ran it as DM/GM and we had some very different views, he like constant dungeon crawl, I like story-line). But the IRL group I'm in is starting up again in two weeks....
@WesleyDavid $85 per year...

Well if you can boot Linux in Javascript...

What if I just read the binary out into the chat?

@ChrisS Bah! They just paid like $600 for ten years of the .mx domain. =/

I think the first one's a '0'

9:57 PM
@JamesOGorman Yo dawg, I heard you like virtualization, so I virtualized your hypervisor so you could virtualize virtually!
