Given the rate at which they sell these power banks, I wouldn't be surprised if they're ordering NCR18650B cells by the millions.
A slightly older model which uses the 2600 mAh cells.
Cheaper and has two output ports, but not as compact.
This is the one I own:
Charges my Nexus 5X at just short of full speed (the phone can take up to 3A over USB Type-C).
I have this (discontinued) model as well:
(Earlier revision with 12,000 mAh.)
It's showing its age but still seems to be outputting a total of about ~7000 mAh (~8500 mAh cell capacity). Faster discharge rates seem to deplete it much faster, so it seems the cells' internal resistance is rising.
Your thoughts on power banks?

heh. I'd suggest avoiding velore, but they're a singapore thing
I've got a xiomi which is pretty nice. Not fancy, but well built, uses fairly good quality cells (LG I think) and was fairly cheap
Works well

Galaxy S6 Edge: Fast charging overheats the phone causing the accelerometer to fail.
How the hell did this design goof get past Samsung testing?
Fast charging generates so much heat that it burns out the accelerometer. Wow.
(My Nexus 5X gets very warm, but never actually hot, near the USB Type-C connector when charging at 3A.)
Okay, seems Samsung has addressed this issue.
Overheating during fast charging is not exactly uncommon.
However, the device getting so hot as to cause hardware damage is unusual and a sign of bad design.

1:40 AM
Just went through a CyanogenMod nightly build update on my Nexus 5X (last update was six days ago; I update the nightlies about once a week). Chilled using a cold pack, the battery drained as much as 6% during the approx 2 minutes it took to rebuild the Dalvik/ART cache.
When unconstrained by thermal throttling, the Snapdragon 808 is a absolute power hog. It's probably even worse with the 810.
Tegra K1 is still worse, generating so much heat that my cold pack cannot absorb all the heat my Nexus 9 SoC generates under load.
At least that as a tablet, it takes a while for the heat to reach critical levels, and that battery life is much less of an issue since the battery is much larger.

2:05 AM
(Note: The CyanDelta server keeps deltas for up to 40 previous builds.)

Wow. 25¢/GB for an SSD – and it's not TLC!

Most of the SM controllers don't do TLC

With IMFT 3D NAND, Mushkin aims to push it down to 12.5¢/GB – and it's still MLC!

That is fairly cheap tho

Nested italics in bold doesn't seem to work correctly in mobile chat.

The new experimental one?

Yep.

Might want to post a MSE bug report

Q: New mobile chat: Italic text nested in bold text does not render correctly

yesterday, by allquixotic
And those 3 problems aren't really a problem outside of a few specific times: when I bought the phone, the $1k I paid was painful; if I ever do something that the government deems worth arresting me for in the future, having my phone used as evidence against me will hurt a lot; and I've only needed to install an unsanctioned app once, and I did it by compiling it using Xcode and pushing it.
@allquixotic Wait a sec. You bought a 128 GB iPhone 6s Plus unlocked?

@bwDraco he did.

That's not common to hear. That phone runs $950.
> when I bought the phone, the $1k I paid was painful
That's why I brought it up.
There are very, very few people willing to spend this much money on a phone.

@bwDraco Except... like EVERY person who every bought an iPhone at launch.

$600 is one thing (and this is typical for a flagship phone). $950 is another.
Not a whole lot of people are willing to put down even $350 up front for a phone like I did.
Shelling out enough money for a gaming laptop to buy a phone is not something I would do.
This is especially when you consider that the typical upgrade cycle for a smartphone is 18-24 months.

@bwDraco The iPhone has routinely launched at $1149 here. Pretty much every model is over $1000.

3:14 AM
@MichaelFrank What country?

@bwDraco New Zealand

Okay, I'm not exactly surprised after accounting for the exchange rate and 15% GST.
The iPhone 6s starts at $649 here in the US. ($649/$749/$849 for 16/64/128 GB.)
For iPhone 6s Plus, it is $749/$849/$949 for 16/64/128 GB.

4:04 AM
Most people don't buy phones off contract tho. You'd rarely pay retail unless you don't want to recontract

@JourneymanGeek Thing is, allq is on a grandfathered unlimited data plan. It's his only means of accessing the Internet at home.
This means he must buy phones at full price.

4:30 AM
@bwDraco I see the issue -- fixing.

Did anybody else's Win10 decide to reboot and spend an hour installing an apparently massive update without even asking?

Thanks—not that we see SE employees often in this room.

@qasdfdsaq meow

@bwDraco Meaow.
@JourneymanGeek Most people in this country don't have contracts.

4:33 AM
Most major carriers here in the US have moved to installment plans. T-Mobile spearheaded this move as part of its Uncarrier initiative.
Everyone else just had to follow suit to stay competitive.

I just do a prepaid plan and buy my own device. Ends up being cheaper than being on a contract.

T-Mobile has by far been the most disruptive of the wireless carriers.

Is it spam or just offtopic: superuser.com/questions/1035913/…

Doesn't appear to be spam to me.

All the carriers here have installment plans but prepaid still seems as popular as ever
Though with something like 150% market penetration it's possible a lot of those prepaid subscribers are secondary accounts.

4:37 AM
What does somebody do with a 2nd account...

Most cases it's probably work/personal/cheating mistress
Personally I have two contracts and six prepaid SIMs yet I haven't a clue what I do with them.
I have at point had three contracts, mostly for unlimited internet when I had no fixed broadband

4:52 AM

ahh right
Got epoxy mostly in the right places on the headphones...

@qasdfdsaq Wasn't this your old avatar?

5:58 AM
well my log periodic yagi optimized for the 700 mhz band reliably gives me +10 Mbps downstream (12 Mbps typical with 15 Mbps spikes increased to 22 Mbps typical with 30 Mbps spikes). Oddly the upstream is unchanged... still peaks at around 5 Mbps
pulled down 5 GB of game updates in 30-35 minutes... that's faster than I ever get from home
Steam says 3.3 MiB/s peak

6:40 AM
Bad news is I had to fix the other side of my headphones too. Good news is the epoxy is working exactly as it should so once everything sets it should be pretty strong

7:05 AM
Why are patent trolls still winning cases like this?

cause of the jury system I suppose
and cause they are getting patents

Just found the answer to an issue that's been well googled (it auto-completed the error message), and the fix was for a completely different product! Awesome... But it worked!

A: there is no telegram tag

bwDracoI've added telegram to your question. In the future, it may be best to add a note at the bottom of your question stating that you'd like to have a particular tag created for it. We'll consider whether it's appropriate to add the tag to the question, then edit out the note once we've decided.

8:26 AM
If there's a new tag, it might be a great idea to handle the tag exerpt/tag wiki for it too

the current question says "without using a cloud online storage service like Dropbox". the bounty says "Shall be a cloud and no cable or interaction necessary."
The user placing the bounty should ask a new question.

I left an @comment. Will the bounty poster see that?

I'd assume he'd go check for answers

Only 7 more hours until I can bounty it

Just samba, but I might forgo that, its been insanely unreliable and I might have an easier way to grab files
You going to bounty it?

Either that or write a decent answer myself.
Just so I can close many questions as a duplicate.
We could do with some more answers to questions which keep getting asked
Or with a duplicate off Foo on Site BAR

@Hennes chucked a on it.
Might also be good to increase the blurb about it being canonical
But I'm on mobile right now

Is there an easy way to find posts in the chat transcripts?

android supports many network file systems to include cifs
why not just adb shell into the android
and mount -t cifs
@JourneymanGeek: yea samba def
@JourneymanGeek: Or setup a ftp server on a pc and do it that way over the network.
@JourneymanGeek: or why not just scp

@Dave SCP is ludiciously slow
well sftp
this isn't android tho

scp -C

The server's linux (fedora 23), clients are windows

android has openssh tools installed (ssh, scp etc)

I'm not running android ._.
I'm not sure why you think I'm running android ;p

1:53 PM
@JourneymanGeek: install cygwin on windows lol
and get sshd working

@Dave I have ssh working

Home!

and I can grab files with nomachine for now

Prepping pumpkin paste for tonight

1:54 PM
I'm trying to decide if the convinience of grabbing files without needing to log in is worth it
or being able to play video straight off the share

you can scp without logging in to an android pc

There is no android anywhere here

i can transfer files from server a to server b from machine c
oh

Paste (falafel, 500gr), pumpkin (400gr), some carrot since the 2 year oild likes it and it is close enough to pumpkin to just add a bit more. Tufo (since the 2yo likes it), some mushrooms. Shreddedf goat cheese for on top. Some saled, probably going to add olives and basemico dressing

so, here's my setup

Still considering added cubed red beet, mushrooms, small bacon pieces and tomato

probably not all of them

@Dave My previous file server died a second time

argh :)

1:57 PM
@dave: I am not sure what the problem is with that question. Transfer via bluetooth to received files. Cronjob on windows to move all files elsewhere. Cronjob on androdi to transfer

Got it replaced and bought a new NUC class machine since the old one seems to be cooking itself
I have a slower processor per core, but more cores, more ram and in a smaller space
And this does 2160p30 ;p

i'm not sure if crond is installed on android though. I don't recall :(.. have to check mine.
but that would work.

windows dosen't do cron either

@JourneymanGeek: yeah it does, task scheduler ;)
hehe

sudo lshw
... oops

2:00 PM
yea there's no crond running / installed on android (at least mine)
damn
crontab command not found ;[
and path env variable is = /sbin:/vendor/bin:/system/sbin:/system/bin:/system/xbin

@Dave I still think the smart money is on using USBOTG ;p

and just plug in an external usb hdd right on
thats probably the best option with the least amt of configuration.

yup
could even get an OTG USB key

rsync too
forgot that one.
I kinda like that post related to using tasker with otg

Hm. Anyone got a preferred email host?
Ideally with unlimited (or a very large limit) for aliases. I'd rather pay per mailbox.
Google Apps only allows 30 per user

0_0
at this point, it sounds like you ought to run your own ;p

Bob
@JourneymanGeek I've been considering that for a while, but I also don't really want to deal with maintaining something as critical as email...

@bob: vpopmail with qmail works amazeballs.
for instance: vaddomain newdomain.com

Bob
Was planning to do things like using a different alias for every website I use it on... perhaps a catch-all

vadduser user@newdomain.com passwd
and done

Bob
2:36 PM
Gmail plus-addressing (which I'm currently using) kinda works but won't let me set it as the from address, afaict
@Dave Hm. Looks interesting.
Would still require me to maintain my own server though.

@bob: used to use it when i provided consulting to an isp when i was a teennager.
@bob: true, they have a web interface for it as well that you can install which makes it all web pretty gui friendly.. forgot the name of it..

Bob

A: Do you use postfix or qmail and why

dyasnyafaik qmail is deprecated in most distros, so you'll probably have to build from source and forget about easy apt/yum style updates. If you still want to go with qmail, qmailrocks.org is what got me through a setup with minimal brain damage. On the other hand, postfix seems to be replacing send...

> qmail is deprecated
nopenopenope
That's just an even bigger mess to manage if I need to do all upgrades manually :P

yea dont use qmailrocks.org its garbage.
hell this was 15 years ago when I last used qmail

Bob
Oh, ideally I'd have spam filtering too.
Another reason to prefer a hosted service.

2:39 PM
spam filtering, something like spamassassin
i think spam assassin is still a standard these days.
spamassassin + rblsmtpd

Bob
End of the day, it's the tradeoff between spending many hours setting it up and many more maintaining it, or paying some $5-10 per month for someone else to do it for me.

+1

Bob
True, I'd get more flexibility with DIY...
I host a lot of things on my own server. But DNS and email are two I'm rather iffy about - they're fairly critical for me.
I don't really have redundancy in place. I don't have a great recovery plan in case of server failure.

damn conference calls brb

Bob
Hm. Looks like Office365 doesn't have an alias limit.
OTOH, the reply address is always the primary...
LOL it's actually a semi-officially supported use-case: blogs.office.com/2013/06/28/…
> Sometimes, aliases can serve as the perfect “throwaway” email addresses when signing up with accounts that might send spam (e.g., promotional mailers, newsletters, etc.). You can use rules to manage unwanted messages from a “throwaway” alias or delete the alias altogether. In the end, you will know your primary email address is not compromised.

Never mind my wealth, I want other things enlarged.
@JourneymanGeek Is that singaporean or cantonese or somethign?

I assume mandarin

Huh. I figured it wasn't mandarin

Might be a different transliteration system?

11:50 PM
Since I'm supposed to understand Mandarin

'supposed'

阴茎

It's my mother tongue. Except I haven't practices for a long time

Apart from about ten words when I was in Singapore and people just assumed I spoke it
Some random strangers at a Hawker went on about how I should re-learn it and whatever
But either way. "Happy new year" in Mandarin is nothing like that. So it's either something else or I haven't a clue what it's supposed to say

Some folks are passionate about that
I'm an ACS boy so I'm expected to be shit at my mother tongue ;p

According to chinahighlights.com/travelguide/special-report/chinese-new-year/… there are three different ways to say happy new year in mandarin

Here, amusingly CNY eve is the important one
Reunion dinners

新年快乐 / 新年快樂 , 新年好 / 新年好, and 过年好 / 過年好

Bob
@qasdfdsaq I read it as cantonese. Even though I don't speak canto.

11:58 PM
@Bob @qasdfdsaq I assume its not dialect, Hokkien's supposed to be the dominant local dialect anyway
