3:20 PM
that vague euphoria/horniness you get a few minutes after stubbing your toe especially hard

wat?
:P

@Doorknob is houston more or less friendly than Chicago?
@RikerW it's quite pleasant. perhaps not enough to make up for the pain, but enough that you can begin to understand why the masochists get into it

@quintopia yeah, it is
Although I can't say I've been to a whole lot of places around here :P

@Doorknob i must not have been clear

oh
uhh... pretty similar?

3:25 PM
"More or less?" "Yes" "ಠ_ಠ"

actually, "no" :P

@Sherlock9 Jelly? A golfing language? Pfft.

@Dennis On my side, Octave only shows that text the first time a symbolic function is used. Is Octave always running on your server? Or is it started each time? If so, a simple startup file that calls a symbolic function might solve the issue

Incidentally. @Doorknob, this is your kick in the pants to get that Google Form up and running

oh yeah that

3:28 PM
I don't mean to bother you, so I'm NOT going to give you many kicks. Probably after the third one fails, I'll just learn how in the heck Google Forms works

I'm doing it right now :P

I accidentally a word ಠ_ಠ

@LuisMendo I'm not sure how to run Octave permanently from the command-line. If everything else fails, I could call a symbolic function before MATL and cut the first x bytes from the output.

@AlexA. @PhiNotPi @GamrCorps @RikerW @Mego @mınxomaτ Discord poll ^

@Dennis this seems the easiest

3:33 PM
Thank you very much. I have filled it in

@Dennis Got it. I'll test on my side and get back to you later. Thanks!

To Dennis, Luis, and quintopia, if you want to join voice chat on the Discord server, let me or Doorknob know

@Doorknob That kind of misses the point doesn't it? If I enter a timer comfortable for me, I still won't know how compatible that is with any other person.

@Sherlock9 i'll join

@mınxomaτ The goal is to choose a time that overlaps with as many people's "slots" as possible.

3:34 PM
@Sherlock9 Thanks, good to know! For now I'll stick to text chat, though

Maybe we could have twice-daily things, if necessary

This is the link discord.gg/0kCkPQ1A36APCuRN
That link might be expired. Hang on

@Doorknob Yeah, but I don't know the other's zones. I am able to be felxible, but I can only enter one time. It should really ask for a start and end time.

@Sherlock9 yeah it has

@Sherlock9 You do not want to hear me talk in English. :P

@Dennis then mute your mic :P

@mınxomaτ Hmm. I'll see if I can make it do a range.

@Dennis I don't give a darn. I live in Indonesia, I'm used to interesting accents

It's the stuttering I'm worried about.
I haven't talked in English in 10 years.

me neither

3:36 PM
Make that 15.

25

I haven't typed a German word for weeks now.
But I probably equally suck at talking.

such a weird concept, the idea of written fluency and spoken ineptitude

Looks like most of us here are non-native English speakers

i mean, i can sort of see it, when i think about how poorly i pronounce french words

3:39 PM
Feature request: voice chats in Spanish or German

+1 for the latter.

If you're okay with me consulting a dictionary every other word for Spanish and probably still butchering it horribly, then... :P

@Dennis Which of those are you?

@LuisMendo Both. I was born in Germany, but I live in Paraguay.

I would be happy to listen to (or set up a voice channel) for Spanish or German chats. I won't understand a most of it, but that's my problem for not learning either language when I had chances to

3:41 PM
@Dennis How did that happen?

@Dennis Ah! That's an interesting mix indeed :-)

@Sherlock9 I was kidding btw.

@quintopia French is hard to write, but not to pronounce :)
We have less exceptions and edge cases than english :)

@Doorknob You showed very good knowledge with your conjugation challenge :-)

@Katenkyo French is still hard to pronounce.

3:43 PM
@Katenkyo Speaking in French makes my tongue hurt.

@LuisMendo Extremely basic knowledge... :P

Just because B is harder than A doesn't make A easier than it was before.

@Katenkyo the phonemes are unfamiliar. the vowels, the nasals, deciding when and when not to pronounce a letter...

@Doorknob Not for some Spanish speakers. Specially the accents :-)

@mınxomaτ @Zgarb So I'd be curious to know what's hard about it, always thought it wasn't that hard to speak in ^^'

3:44 PM
@mınxomaτ Rather long story. I have to go now, so I'll tell it another time.

@Katenkyo As mentioned, the nasals and other unfamiliar phonemes. And the French r is difficult to get right.

@quintopia thanks for the examples :). I agree that some things are badly designed, but maybe i'm too used to it to judge (except "Faisait" which sounds like "feusait", I never think it was difficult ^^')

I'm constantly amazed by Europeans and their abilities to speak like two or three or four languages. Heck, a good percentage of supposedly-English-speaking Americans can't even speak English.

@Zgarb Do you see the sound you make when you have something stuck in your throat and trying to unstuck it? The "r" sounds like that ^^

3:48 PM
@Katenkyo like the "s" on the end of "suis" which is apparently pronounced before vowels but not consonants?

@quintopia most ending-letters in french are silent

@Katenkyo I tend to gag and cough when that happens. :P

@quintopia The only rules about the s are : if surrounded by vowels, pronounce as "z", else, pronounce as "s"

je suis le tenebreaux => zhe swi le tenebruh (sort of)
This I remember from a Flanders and Swann song

@Sherlock9 Je suis ténébreux (or Je suis le chevalier (or other noun) ténébreux) ^^

3:51 PM
i can sing all of "Je Suis Rick Springfield" and that is the extent of my french speaking

and it's more like "Ge" than "Zhe" ^^

@Katenkyo Replying to the wrong person

@Sherlock9 oops ^^'

@Katenkyo These are the lyrics of Je suis le Tenebreux nyanko.pwp.blueyonder.co.uk/fas/hat_jesuis.html

3:54 PM
At least, we don't have things like "rate bait eight" which sounds a lot similar ^^

Q: Sort scrambled two-dimensional array filled with numbers by swapping

JCarterA two-dimensional array of size n×n is filled with n*n numbers, starting from number 1. Those numbers are to be sorted per row in ascending order; the first number of a row must be greater than the last number of the previous row (the smallest number of all (1) will be in [0,0]). This is similar ...

@Sherlock9 Oh, yeah, "Ténébreux" is used as the noun itself, so it's ok there ^^
@Sherlock9 and for reference "Le Ténébreux" is better translated by "The one who live by/in/covered in darkness" than "the Dark One" ^^

@Dennis Hahaha, I'm beating you again :D

Now I just have Sp3000 to chase down...

@Katenkyo <s>I think it's adapted from a Byron poem</s>. I'll have to track it down

@Doorknob done. I submitted twice, one for weekends and one for weekdays.

3:59 PM
@Sherlock9 Actually, it's well written and pleasing to read, I'll look for more later. Thanks for the link !

@Katenkyo A sonnet by Gerard de Nerval frenchtoday.com/french-poetry-reading/…

@GamrCorps ok, thanks!

@Katenkyo Listen to the other songs as well. This was by a comedy duo, Flanders and Swann

@Sherlock9 It's... dark/sad for a comedy Oo

@Katenkyo Well the whole thing is sung in French. I don't think anyone in the British audience got that bit

4:02 PM
Oh, just found a Poetic license (is that the good translation for Licence Poétique ?) ^^

And the tune it was sent to, doesn't give the tone of the poem away

@Sherlock9 The last tercet, speak about going down the Acheron (the death's river you have to cross by when going to the Hells), Orphée is the one who failed to take back is wife from Hadès ^^
Everything's about things like that ^^'
Love, tragedy and death ^^

@Doorknob not sure if I can continue the discord. I'll do the poll, but no promises.
Sorry.
I would like to though.
Even if only to hear Alex's wrongness...

@Sherlock9 In facts, there isn't a lot of happy poems on your site xD

@RikerW It's not like you have to be there every day. You can join a few times a month whenever you can :P

or you could just listen but not talk

Posted the wrong song, but that's a good one anyway
@Katenkyo There we go youtube.com/watch?v=WTv18qlvviE

@Doorknob Maybe that...
My mom is uber strict about bed at 9:00 though.
IDK.
@Doorknob Will try to do that.

@Sherlock9 can't listen at it right now, I'm on my phone, will listen to that later, but thanks :)
and bye guys, have to leave for now :)

Alright, thanks for the talk. See you later

4:15 PM
@Sherlock9 Video not available

Oh for the love of St. Isidore
It works for me. And I've already gotten two video unavailable messages at this point, so *imagine that shrug emote here, since apparently I can't find that either ಠ_ಠ *

someone should create a modified version of called rjs that adds one thing a golfier randomnumbergenerator

@BlockCoder1392 If you're talking about JS, Japt has that

yup forgot a whole word
BTW this is what i meant
like genereating 3 distinct 2-21 numbers and one from 41 to 653 then something like this:
3:2r21,41r653
or all distinct: d[3:2r21,41r653]
or just the first distinct: d3:2r21,41r653

Yeah, that's a good idea

4:34 PM
@Doorknob what is Vim?
12

@RikerW Its a text editor

I know that much..
But the is a whole SE site about it, so it must be something very useful/powerful.
I think.
I know he uses it, and I just wanted to know.

You've never used vi?
For shame.

(me neither)

I use jed. Sue me

4:47 PM
@mınxomaτ mkay see you in court

I use notepad. Sue me

don't turn this into a class-action suit

@quartata Funny because I am in law school. Though I wouldn't hold up in an American court I guess. My "International Law" class actually should be titled "European Law and why it is silly whatever America does" (Prof's opinion).

@mınxomaτ I've understood the American civil legal system as "with some paperwork and a filing fee, anyone can sue anyone for anything"

That's perfectly fine.

4:53 PM
@mınxomaτ It's illegal to use anything but vi here in America
So yeah it wouldn't hold up
I guess that would be a criminal legal system thing though.

@quartata s/America/'Murica

It's legal to use ed the standard command line-by-line editor though. Kappa

@quartata i'm fine with abbreviating america, but that apostrophe placement is infuriating
7

@quintopia I'm fine with neither of those things
Since 'murica isn't even the golfiest
clearly US is

4:57 PM
Or encode U as one bit and S as another bit, so the entire thing is 2 bits

@quartata speech isn't measured in bytes, but in total aggregate tongue, lip and jaw distance traveled. 'murica wins that hands down
@CᴏɴᴏʀO'Bʀɪᴇɴ this would be a hard language to usu

Or encode US as one byte yes, that byte exists! and have the whole thing at one byte. But know, I'm open for suggestions.

@quintopia Yes, it would be.

@CᴏɴᴏʀO'Bʀɪᴇɴ uus ussuususus

What a patriot!

5:04 PM
my nonogram solver should be finished by 6pm. i can't help but wonder if sleafar already has an optimal solution in both directions

5:45 PM
@quartata Sorry.
I think that @Doorknob and @quartata are the same person.
They both do nethack and vi/vim.
They both use perl.
Case proved.
Hey, I got 7 stars! :P

what no

what yes

He uses zsh I use bash
big difference

Yeah, that is a fake to throw us off your trail.

If I were you, I wouldn't deny it. I would get the SE staff to merge my account into yours, which would give you a diamond :P

lol @ results

@Doorknob I prefer the nemawashi approach to world domination

@Doorknob you don't. :3

Without alex: strawpoll.me/6575757
@quartata Then why do you like tourists in nethack, not samurai?
:P
@Doorknob Wait, so you admit it?

For the record I don't think I'd like living in Texas

5:56 PM
^
but they have good shotguns

@RikerW On NetHack: which role do you like? Nightly Interest Survey!

Wat?

@zyabin101 I like Valkyries. They are very easy.

I am alex, and safari is cool and nethack is dumb.

@BlockCoder1392 No, it's just that there are 800 that haven't been posted and then deleted yet.

Year 2900 where all people in the world play code golf! The time of Linux, peace and open source!

@trichoplax 1989, to be precise.

6:01 PM
@Doorknob What then?
is role okay?

@RikerW yes

role is the appropriate term yes

Let's magically return to the present.

@randomra The question says the truthy output always has to be the same

900 years ago...

6:02 PM
i.e. it can be any truthy value, but there are only 2 possible outputs

Year 2000 where there is a place where people play code golf. The time of Windows, war and proprietary software.

I see, my bad

Over 9000 milliseconds ago...

Let's magically return to the future.
@Optimizer that doesn't work.

We failed to move to the future. I and @Optimizer used up their only power for today.
Oh, and @BlockCoder1392 used his power to a good minute. We will remember this minute in our lives.

Q: A Yoda-speaking challenge, this is

Simone CheloThe challenge Well, I think it is quite clear, isn't it? You have to make a function or a program that takes a string as an argument and outputs the corrispondent Yoda-speaking. @quartata Close this challenge, they could not.

@Doorknob do over:
@quartata ^

I want to make a challenge where you write a program that generates regex (that matches one list, but not another)
but scored based on regex length
instead of program length

Meta regex golf *_*

Think we have a regex golf one.

@RikerW What is a nethack?

(that one scores by program length)

7:00 PM
@mınxomaτ Google always helps, and @Doorknob or @quartata will be happy to explain.
I am supposed to be taking a test right now.

That was just a comeback to your vi question ...

Oh, okay. :P
It did get one star.

Just found this on xkcd:
verizon math
I think I just lost an IQ point

Is that the "point zero two cents" vs "point zero two dollars" call?
Or w/e the number was

7:07 PM
Yes
After two hours of xkcd bingeing I think I have found the most accurate xkcd ever:
Actually, there's probably a more accurate one.

@RikerW Anonymous poll *_*

@quartata What does it actually come out to, his estimation?

I don't know what the Prius's MPG is.
But this "good enough it's a law" mentality is something I do remember from dimensional analysis

7:32 PM
@zyabin101 I wish it wasn't. :(

um wat

Hmm, im guessing that joke is supposed to be funny. Its too bad I don't get it :(
Honestly can't wait to take real math classes I hate seeing stuff I don't get

@quartata this seems like an especially difficult formula to come up with. I wonder which one was the "I need a number with this value." My bet is on the english channel one, since googling things measured in units of distance seems the simplest
