3:00 AM
\o/

Hmm... is Esc a good "cancel edit" button? Or should it be something else?
Esc is too easy to hit accidentally.

How? It's literally close to nothing?

It's close to backtick
Also I have caps mapped to Esc when tapped
Also I like to mash Esc repeatedly when I'm thinking about something

^

3:04 AM
It makes a little sense! :P
(I have accidentally hit Esc instead of backtick multiple times, though)
(which infuriatingly clears everything in the chat input box, un-undoably)

Not really. For starters, how do you lock your caps?

@Dennis I don't
why would I want to do that?

ಠ_ಠ

Caps is mapped to Esc when tapped and Ctrl when pressed with another key.

Sure, that's not confusing.
Can you re-use it as a compose key if you stare at it?

3:06 AM
Haha, it's very very handy actually

How do you do that?

It's a Debian package, not sure about $YOUR_PREFERRED_DISTRO

That looks pretty handy.

The Helios bot on Spacewar! is infuriating to play against.

@Dennis Yeah, it's a lot easier to reach than Esc and a little easier to reach than Ctrl (Ctrl+F requires twisting your hand, while Caps+F is just shifting your finger a single key over, for example).
Okay, idea: Esc is cancel edit, but if you edit the same message, your edit is restored. Seems like a reasonable compromise.

3:09 AM
@El'endiaStarman I visited the page, but they aren't online?

Refresh.

@Doorknob冰 Oh, that's nice. It would also be cool if submitting a message didn't nuke the edit history.

@Dennis What do you mean?

Apparently, that's not a thing.

Er, what's not a thing?

3:13 AM
I got confused. Clicking edit destroys the message you're currently typing, i.e., canceling the edit (or Ctrl+Z) does not get it back.

Oh. Why would you try to edit something in the middle of typing a different message?

I do that all the time.
I don't know why, but I do.

I do that too

Sometimes I forget what I'm doing while I'm doing it

3:15 AM
I never do that...

Another idea: a send lines button (or a shortcut like Ctrl+Enter) that sends all lines as separate chat posts.

I always Ctrl+A, Ctrl+X, edit other message, Ctrl+V, and continue.

@Dennis Rate limit kills that idea
You can't post more than 2 messages in a row

@Doorknob冰 Well, you could do it with a timeout. And preferably freeze chat before starting the sequence, if the user is a room owner. :P

haha

3:17 AM
@El'endiaStarman I do the same, except I usually forget the first two steps.
What was the rate limit anyway? One post per second?

It's slightly complex
You can post two messages in quick succession, but then you start getting rate limited
And it's a "rolling" limit, not just "x per second"

:(
If Markdown worked in multi-line post, we would not need such nonsense.

/me makes a Limp Bizkit reference

Markdown works in multiline posts on Miaou ^.^

Limp biscuit?

3:19 AM
Also on Miaou, you can have text and a onebox in the same message
if you put them on separate lines
You can even have multiple oneboxes in one message

Stack Exchange should hire the Miaou guy to be a chat developer.

@AlexA. The Miaou guy is a SO user with... uh, at least 100k rep. :P

@Doorknob冰 Sure, but he isn't an employee. :P
yet

FINALLY BEAT THE HELIOS BOT!!! 4-3
That's after multiple losses though...

3:21 AM
@El'endiaStarman \o/

And two tied games, 3-3 and 4-4.
The winning strategy is mostly to try to make it hyperspace as often as possible. Orbiting the sun also seems to confuse it, which is hilarious.

makes an esolang called ReplyButton

So that's what that button does

That would actually be a sort-of-not-really-neat idea. An esolang based on chaining commands to reference one another.

3:24 AM
What do you mean to reference one another?
Dec 22 at 22:04, by Alex A.
brb making a chat bot called Fax Machine.

YUSS. Another win! 2-1. It was very nearly a 2-0 win though. :D

@AlexA. oh, that's where the username came from
@AlexA. As in, a command is dependent on the entire chain of commands that it is a "reply" to (and the commands that "reply" to it). I dunno, not really a thought out idea at all. :P

So "BC" does something different than "ABC"?

No, something like A \n :1 B \n :2 C (where B "replies" to A and C "replies" to B) is different than A \n :1 B \n :1 C or something.

If you implement another esolang (or rather when), that will be a good opportunity for you to learn Julia! :D
@Doorknob冰 :O

3:26 AM
@AlexA. It would also be a good opportunity to polish up my Rust skills... :P

Would you say that your Rust skills are a bit... Rusty?

That pun has been made far too many times to be funny anymore

All I'm seeing is

@Dennis sevichat has been fixed

@CᴏɴᴏʀO'Bʀɪᴇɴ And the other GIF was posted by a mod on another site XD

@mınxomaτ Is that an unholy perversion of Lenny?

@AlexA. whatislenny.jpg

I just finished a Harry Potter movie marathon.

@mınxomaτ ( ͡° ͜ʖ ͡°)
@PhiNotPi Congratulations. How do you feel? Magical?

I think Lenny is already unholy, so...
@RikerW Say, I never did hear whether refreshing worked.

3:42 AM

"Yer a wizard, Lenny!" "o thx hegrid ( ͡° ͜ʖ ͡°)"

I am apparently a "Memonimee" on memrise.com.
They have all these weird rank names. "Memcache," "Memgineer," "Membassador," "Meminence," "Memperor"... >.<
Oh, and "Memocrat" and "Memmoth."

I clicked on that expecting memes and was sorely disappointed.

I thought that was a site for memes o_o
ninja'd

hahaha

3:44 AM
Also somebody stole my parent's credit card information and we had to cancel it, but that's probably unrelated.

@PhiNotPi Surely it was related to either Harry Potter or Doorknob's meme learning site

@PhiNotPi Yeah, sorry. I just needed another free netflix month.

@El'endiaStarman What versus what?

Me versus Helios bot.

Today's puzzle of the day on lichess is hardly even a "puzzle"...

I mustache you all a question: is there a donger with one?

I immediately regret posting this link.

3:48 AM
@Doorknob冰 Works great wth default settngs! Sadly, assgnng stuff to the key doesn't seem to be a good dea anymore.

@Dennis er... yeah, sorry, didn't consider that. Do you have any other ideas other than <esc> to enter "command mode" (because I need that for other purposes)?

This will be the url of the next created se chatroom, treasure it: chat.stackexchange.com/rooms/33557

@Doorknob冰 Qxa3 amirite? :)

@PhiNotPi duh, of course
Totally free pawn :P

@Doorknob冰 that was easy indeed ._.

3:50 AM
...I actually moved the black pawn up to check the white king.

@El'endiaStarman yeah, that's the correct solution. Sarcasm doesn't come across the greatest via text. :P

oh, lol

What is something jQuery cannot do?

Does not exist

@AlexA. Not exist
Damn!

3:53 AM
Well, considering that jQuery is a JavaScript library, that's like asking what JS can't do...

No, JavaScript is a jQuery library
stop this blasphemy at once

@AlexA. jQuery cannot feel emotions
3
as far as I know

@Calvin'sHobbies Yes it can

jQuery is a stackoverflow excuse.

jQuery is $. $ symbolizes greed. Greed is an emotion. Q.E.D.

3:54 AM
Greed is an emotion?

Unless you also include Prototype...

@AlexA. quiet

@AlexA. "I'm feeling greedy", sure

@Doorknob冰 For mashing? :P

3:55 AM
@mınxomaτ what about it?

@Dennis Haha, no, to unfocus the input box

@CᴏɴᴏʀO'Bʀɪᴇɴ I prematurely pinged you.

oh god here it comes

Escape doesn't unfocus anything here.

...and Conor was never heard from again

3:56 AM
Let's say that I challenge someone to a game of chess, but instead of trying to checkmate them, my secret goal is to get my king to the opposite side of the board.

@PhiNotPi I actually did that once!
... I failed miserably.

Isn't that just checkers?

@AlexA. reloads shotgun It was dealt with.

@Dennis Hm. Must be a cVim thing. I think I'll try making it configurable, maybe.

@AlexA. What is this "Safari" you speak of

@Doorknob冰 apple.com/safari

Safari ಠ_ಠ

@Doorknob冰 are they seriously so out of options that they have to resort to "we save you like 3 clicks"

@Doorknob冰 those benchmarks tho

4:09 AM
You might as well use lynx. Safari has maybe 2 more features.

I don't trust those benchmarks

Why does every site make you create a new login? I mean it's a pain for me to remember another username/pw but what do they get out of it if the site is free anyway? They can still show me ads whether I'm logged in or not!

You mean on SE?

No, any website

4:23 AM
oh

I like SE actually, since you can login with google and stuff

Yeah, I'm beginning to see more sites doing that, which is nice

4:26 AM
It was mid-August. So really, a little less than 5.5 years ago.

The 2100's will be interesting. Things like '10 will be potentially ambiguous online
If SE is still around

SE becomes Skynet.

There's absolutely no way I'd live to 110, so 2100 will be someone else's problem.

@Calvin'sHobbies SE will be like FB

@CᴏɴᴏʀO'Bʀɪᴇɴ how so?

@CᴏɴᴏʀO'Bʀɪᴇɴ Solution: diagonals are not perfect.
