5:00 PM
Oh, I just noticed I've already had that hat!

@flawr lol

But I have to say, I like the copernicus hat most of them all

@flawr Lucky. You have the blue/black one.

Hello

Hi SuperJedi.

5:01 PM
@SuperJedi224 Do you have the blue or white flipflop hat?

The white one. I'm currently wearing it at present.

@SuperJedi224 Which do you normally see the dress as?

I thought that debate had already been settled.

I am asking because I am very, very sad to have the white hat when I see the blue dress.

I'm mad I got the white hat because I like the blue hat much better

5:07 PM
I still don't have a hat

@quartata SAME!!!!!!!!
I really do think the blue looks cooler.

oh, there it is
white!

@quartata I'm sad,because I don't have the onion knight.

@RikerW The dress IS blue

@SuperJedi224 Yes, but in the blurry photo does it look blue or white?

5:12 PM
Usually blue

It was confirmed to be blue and black.

@RikerW In that photo, definitely blue

I see it as white and gold

Thank you for answering.
@quartata BLASPHEMY!

@quartata Your brain is making incorrect assumptions based on the limited information, and basing its color correction on the incorrect assumptions

@SuperJedi224 I know, but doesn't have as good of a ring to it

@JAtkin I updated MeasureBot.

@RikerW (╯°□°)╯︵ ┻━┻

5:16 PM
@TimmyD Blue, or gold?

@RikerW That's ambiguous, some people see it as blue and gold (very rare)

My sister sees it as that. Go figure,

One of the other photographs of it I've seen, if you print it out and hold it near a window at the right angle you can make it look light turquoise and black.

Some people see it as blue and brown which I really don't get

5:19 PM

Some people see it as gray only. Blind people.

well, my eyes would see some color, but my brain would know that light is falling on it making it shine so the real color is automatically adjusted by my brain

@RikerW ?

The dress is clearly blue-and-black, and has been documented as blue-and-black. I can, intellectually, understand how some people's visual processing could interpret overexposure and JPG compression artifacting as affecting the color they perceive, but that doesn't change the actual color of the dress itself.

5:20 PM
Achromatopsia (ACHM) is a medical syndrome that exhibits symptoms relating to at least five conditions. The term may refer to acquired conditions such as cerebral achromatopsia, also known as color agnosia, but it typically refers to an autosomal recessive congenital color vision condition, the inability to perceive color and to achieve satisfactory visual acuity at high light levels (typically exterior daylight). The syndrome is also present in an incomplete form which is more properly defined as dyschromatopsia. It is estimated to affect 1 in 40,000 live births worldwide. There is some discussion...

@TimmyD I agree. I was questioning what they see it as though, not the actual color.

@TimmyD blue and black elitist

@quartata ¯\_(ツ)_/¯

@TimmyD ಠ_ಠ

hi..I have another matrix challenge in mind :)

5:24 PM
Get it out of your mind!

@flawr I can't :)

Sorry to interrupt the really important discussion, but I have an even more important question: are there any cultures that celebrate the leap day? Seeing what sort of random days are celebrated in our calendars, it's kinda odd that no one is really bothered by a date that only occurs every 4 (or sometimes 8) years.

I feel I am representing the matrix world

@Lembik You are the matrix world.

@flawr unless you meant.. pose it quickly!
@MartinBüttner thanks :)

5:25 PM
@Lembik I think he meant "sandbox it quickly".

=)

@MartinBüttner that is equally kind

I meant "I wanna know, plz tell me"

but I would like to mention it first
@flawr oh great.. well here it is

Quicker!
I am impatient!

5:26 PM
February 29, also known as the leap day of the Gregorian calendar, is a date that occurs in most years that are divisible by 4, such as 2004, 2008, 2012, 2016 and 2020. Years that are divisible by 100, but not by 400, do not contain a leap day. Thus, 1700, 1800, and 1900 did not contain a leap day, 2100 and 2200 will not contain a leap day, while 1600 and 2000 did, and 2400 will. Years containing a leap day are called leap years. February 29 is the 60th day of the Gregorian calendar in such a year, with 306 days remaining until the end of the year. In the Chinese calendar, this day will only occur...

Gogogogooo!

@MartinBüttner My (sister's-husband's-nephew) was born on Feb 29. His family certainly celebrates it when it comes around.

@MartinBüttner The link is specifically for the "Observances" section. The one box doesn't do it justice

It is a saint's day for saint oswald

5:26 PM
given a matrix M whose elements are -1 or 1, consider Mx for all possible +-1 vectors x
now compute the entropy of Mx

Also what the heck? Rare disease day?

the challenge is, given a matrix M, output the entropy as quickly as possible. I am considering allowing 1% error

@Rainbolt Looking at that list, I think the answer is "no".

@TimmyD Brother-in-law's nephew, or possibly if your sister has a kid your nephew's cousin?

@Lembik Hm seems great, but why the restriction to -+1 matrices/vectors

5:28 PM
When should questions be protected here on PPCG?

@MartinBüttner I hope someone with a rare disease participates in your challenge.

I was thinking of protecting the cat catalog challenge since it seems to get a lot of duplicate answers

@flawr you need to restrict the vectors or there are too many of them
@flawr I could allow integer valued matrices

@RikerW I was thinking nephew-in-law but I don't think that's a "legit" relation.

According to the Guinness Book of Records, there are Leap Day World Record Holders both of a family producing three consecutive generations born on February 29 and of the number of children born on February 29 in the same family.
Noun: nephew-in-law ‎(plural nephews-in-law)
  1. Son-in-law of someone's brother. (fraternal nephew-in-law)
@quartata Are you trying to force the mods out of work?! :P

5:30 PM
@RikerW The latter record is probably less about having a kid on leap day every time and more about having triplets on leap day. You score three points right off the bat.

@Lembik allowing a small but strict error sounds like an interesting twist :)

@RikerW No...

@Rainbolt Yeah, but this guy was born on leap day and so were his son and granddaughter.
Three generations.

That's the first one. I was talking about the latter record

@Rainbolt If I could edit twice, I would be saying "What second record?"

5:32 PM
So, protect it or no?

@RikerW "... both ... and of the number of children born on February 29 in the same family."

@quartata Sure.

ninja'd

I was just thinking about certain a +-1 Matrix with a special property, I think orthogonality, does anyone know what that matrix was called?

Jerry.

5:33 PM
@RikerW What OS are you running? 10.6 Snow Leopard?

@AlexA. Mountain lion, OS X 10.8.5

@RikerW Yeah, that's got the "-in-law" portion of the relation in the wrong spot. This is the direct nephew of my brother-in-law, so that definition doesn't fit. My hesitation resulted in me saying "sister's-husband's-nephew" instead to remove ambiguity.

@AlexA. It looks like 10.8
ninja'd
10.6 didn't have the shape of dock

@quartata I thought 10.7-10.9 all had the 3D dock. At least they all did for me.

I would run 10.11 or .10 or even .9, but my computer is from mid-2009, and can't handle it.

5:35 PM
@AlexA. Right, but 10.6 doesn't have the 3D dock

@MartinBüttner thanks :)
@MartinBüttner I was a little worried you would be forced to use brute force otherwise

@quartata If you look at the screenshot Riker posted, he doesn't have a 3D dock.

This is 10.6
Compare it to his screenshot

10.6 had a 3D dock? o_O
I call shenanigans

Look.

5:37 PM
@RikerW But but but this was on the side of the screen earlier D:

I normally have my dock on the left, where it isn't 3d.

WHAT IS WRONG WITH ME (╯°□°)╯︵ ┻━┻
@RikerW Oh
That explains it then
I didn't realize it wasn't 3D when it wasn't at the bottom

@AlexA. Click the apple button in the top left corner, go to dock, click position on left (or right or bottom). :D
@quartata Do you run 10.6?

@RikerW I'm on 10.10 so it'll probably look the same as it already does, just on a different side. :P

Clearly, the dock is blue-and-black.

5:39 PM
@RikerW No, that's from Google Images. He runs something called "Ubuntu Studio."
I'm convinced he made it up
Except that I looked it up once and it exists

:P

@AlexA. No, but I want too, so yes.

@RikerW What have you done

@AlexA. Opened paintboard and airsprayed it in black, ocean, midnight, and teal. :D

@AlexA. It looks quite cool when it is small, but horrendous big.

@TimmyD Two wrongs don't make a right
@RikerW I can't believe you've done this. Clearly the dock should be white and gold.

@TimmyD But D&D might not be right, bc we don't know that
@AlexA. NEVER!!!

@AlexA. But three lefts do.

@TimmyD That's... accurate.

5:44 PM
@AlexA. What RikerW said.

@MartinBüttner D:
I'm probably also the only person who doesn't play chess.

:D

@AlexA. You're not.

@AlexA. You're not.

@AlexA. Only if you are talking about 90° angles and curvature 0.

5:46 PM
@flawr But of course. What else would "left" mean? :D

I don't go out of my way to play chess, but I don't turn it down if someone offers.

I don't even know how to play chess

@AlexA. To be left in the dust, sorry and alone, full of regret.
@TimmyD Same.

@RikerW ._.

@AlexA. well, that's a different issue... :D

5:47 PM
@AlexA. I have to say that is kinda sad.

@AlexA. That's sad.
Ninja'd

(Where's my screenshot of the 4 pings in a row...)

@AlexA. You could also turn 90° on a hyperbolic paraboloid.

But there a 360° turn is not a complete turn.

5:48 PM
@RikerW Thank you

@flawr On a sphere, three appropriately-sized lefts in the correct locations can bring you back to your starting point. So, you kinda have a point.

@TimmyD as can a single 90 degree left.

@AlexA. That is amazing, but horrific.

5:50 PM
@MartinBüttner Well, sure, but now you're varying the number of lefts. That's just crazy talk. ;-)

Oh, I just learned a new exceptionally beautiful word: tergiversator
Added to my list.

5:54 PM
Noun tergiversator ‎(plural tergiversators) one who tergiversates
5
thanks wiktionary...

@TimmyD -1/2 + sqrt(3)/2 * i cubed equals 1. :P

Is @MartinBüttner's full name Martin Nutella Butter?

@RikerW Not if i=1.

@flawr Presumably "i" here means i, as in the imaginary number.

@flawr no, i=sqrt(-1)

Why would anyone make imaginary numbers????

5:58 PM
@flawr Cause trolling

Only real stuff is real.

@flawr If mathematica knows it, so do I. reference.wolfram.com/language/guide/ComplexNumbers.html
(I mean it exists.)

@RikerW Euler's Identity is more neat

Euler's Identity was proven false

Well only real stuff exist.
That is why imaginary stuff is called imaginary
because it does not exist.

Dragons are not real

@flawr But imaginary numbers can be used to model rotations in 2 dimensions

that is why they are called imagine dragons.

@AlexA. ?

@SuperJedi224 So can imaginary dragons.

6:01 PM
@TimmyD For real. The math just doesn't work out.

@flawr locahost
@TimmyD True.

@AlexA. I'm referring to e^(pi*i)+1=0 equation. I'm pretty sure a lot of math would break if that were not a true equation.

@TimmyD It's okay. Everybody knows that .

6:04 PM
@TimmyD That's the same thing I mean
It doesn't work if you set i = 1

NO!!! i=sqrt(-1)

> The Steam Store is experiencing some heavy load right now.
lal

haha, no shit

@AlexA. How are you setting i=1?

I'm not

6:05 PM

Life is setting i = 1.
@MartinBüttner Some kind of winter sale I presume?

yeah, holiday sale started 6 minutes ago

@SuperJedi224 No, that's correct

@AlexA. Not sure if troll, or just (╯°□°)╯︵ sǝlnɹ

6:07 PM
@MartinBüttner Any particular game in mind?

We should introduce on Math.SE.

@RikerW there's a bunch on my wishlist. if anything is sufficiently reduced I'll probably get it. but nothing in particular that I've been waiting for.

is SE Math's problem. We had .
@MartinBüttner Favorite?
Game ever i mean.

As a math-loving human it pains my body to put i=1 in a program as it is so obviously not right.

@RikerW Half-Life 1, 2, and episodes 1 and 2, obviously.

6:08 PM
@RikerW I don't like picking a single one, tbh ^^

@Ampora Yes. j and k too. I always use for (var m=0;m<8;m++)

Ocarina of Time, and PoP Sands of Time are serious contenders, I guess.

Ocarina of Time was a good game. Majora's Mask was crazy hard.

@RikerW And then Outdoors.SE can have

I am still waiting for a Portal 3.

6:10 PM
@RikerW Won't happen.

@RikerW It'll come with HL3.

@AlexA. I can hope.

L4D3 confirmed though

@MartinBüttner Thank you for being more optimistic than alex.

(I think he was getting at the same thing :P)

6:11 PM
But if you agree, you'll both be wrong...

If you discuss j and k as having hats in traditional notation, I'm ok with using j and k in programs. (\mathbf{\hat{j}}) and (\mathbf{\hat{k}}) in addition to (\mathbf{\hat{i}}) suck.

All of the moderators are actually gnibbler's sock accounts.

@AlexA. He didn't say it directly, so i like his post better.

@MartinBüttner Hang on, I'll fix that now

@Ampora I think I did that as a boggle board code challenge but it didn't get very many answers
@JAtkin you should have a test case where words overlap (instead of cross)

Oh. Thanks for saving my body from typing it up in Sandbox.
