@A.B. script on the way, printing to the screen alright . . . Will need to figure out deletion part, but that's just sed . . . Or I might use awk . . . will see

Nah, sod it, who cares.

@terdon nope. No idea what caused those deletions.

@Seth He probably just came across the question by chance. I'm sure he was right to delete it.
Thanks for indulging my curiosity, by the way.

np
because of the new fast notifications deleting it didn't prevent me from seeing the gist of it so figured meh, do it anyway.

:)

Hrm. I have to backport schroot from stretch to jessie.
It doesn't play nice with the 4.1 kernel that the Pi is using.

1:08 AM
Can't backport it.
But I was still able to get it to work.
I'll go into more detail in an article I've almost finished writing.

1:43 AM
@NathanOsman You should stacktack that! ;-)

@James You mean post it on SE somewhere and use my blog to link to the answer?
That's a new way to advertise... in a captcha.

Hi. Quick question: In Ubuntu 14.04 with Unity, when a window becomes unresponsive, it is grayed out and a dialog appears that asks me whether I want to kill the process.
How can I turn this off?
(Reason: Mathematica seems to do something weird, because e.g. moving sliders will trigger this unresponsiveness warning after a few seconds. Very annoying)

@A.B. script draft completed, please let me know if youlike what you see here: paste.ubuntu.com/13434218

Q: How do I turn off the feature where a window grays out when it's thinking?

Ian HincksSo in the last couple of releases of Ubuntu (forget when it started), a window will gray out if it is not responsive/thinking too hard. Maybe "gray out" isn't the best term, it just sort of gets darker. I'm not sure what the exact criterion is to set this off. For one program in particular (Math...

@Neil Hello :)

3:22 AM
@halirutan may be taking up too much process or something, have you tried realtime, lowlatency or no preempt kernel - or Ubuntu Studio
or what is the processor/memory on it - may just be time for a better computer

@Mateo I believe the reason is in the way the Mathematica front-end communicates with its calculation kernel and that during the slider movement, other things really are unresponsive.
The program is more than 25 years old.
@Mateo Do I have to restart the window manager to apply the change?

don't know, I'd say try it - then see
wow, this is really cool @halirutan mathematica.stackexchange.com/a/26281

@Mateo hehe.. yes. Didn't want to answer in the first place but I started explaining to my wife how easy this works..
drawings needed to be made..
@Mateo OK, the compiz settings don't work for me, because I don't use compiz. I'm using "Gnome SHELL". When I do a compize --replace, I can easily turn the screen-dimming off with the solution you posted.

hm...

The real problem is, that not only the window is dimmed, I get a dialog asking me to kill the program. If I accidentally hit ESC, Mathematica is killed and all changes in the files are lost :-)
Happened already more then once.
Hmm, let's call it a night. Already half past 4. @Mateo thanks for the link.

3:40 AM
yeah, looks like things changes in gnome huh

Q: Gnome wants to kill Mathematica 10 during selection

Yi WangI am using Linux (CentOS, Gnome 3.8.4) and I suspect this is an OS dependent problem. When I input some text, and use mouse to select the text as follows: First press the mouse left button, keep holding the button while move the mouse to select something, and do not release the button for about ...

Hello folks, I am wondering if I can reinstall ubuntu 14.04 on working copy of ubuntu 14.04 keeping my installed programs and data? Any guidelines would be great help. thank you all!

you can keep data if you have /home on a separate partition, but keeping programs is impossible if you really want to reinstall. If you keep programs what's left to reinstall?

@MuhammadSajidIqbal dump out a list of installed applications, backup config files and /home ;p

I like to update os files and all default programs and drivers comes with new installation.

A: How do I "duplicate" a server?

Journeyman GeekIf all else fails, there's the old fashioned way - On Ubuntu or debian,use dpkg --get-selections to dump out a list of installed packages, and install them with dpkg --set-selections. The equivalent of this for red hat based distros is yum-debug-dump and yum-debug-restore (optionally with --insta...

Go home, Opera - you're drunk.

Heh... I've seen similar. Disable hardware acceleration works for me when it goes bonkers like that.

I kinda thought I did, but I can check.

That usually works for me but, well, Opera has been known to get drunk and get rowdy on me. It could well be what you're thinking. nods
There... sighs It has been a long day.

The only option I can find is "Disable accelerated 2D canvas".
I don't think the page is using WebGL :P

One sec.

7:19 AM
(I'm filtering opera:flags BTW.)

Use hardware acceleration when available
In plain ol' settings.
Well, advanced settings --- I think.

Ooooh.
Not in experiments :P
Silly me.

LOL I understand. Had I not had a drunken Opera before, I probably would look there too.

...and switched off. Now we'll see if this happens again.

From the terminal: opera-beta --disable-gpu-compositing
Or just "opera."

7:21 AM
Ah, good to know.

Or "opera-developer" if that's the case.
Works for Chromium and Vivaldi and Chrome (I assume). Anything based on the Chromium source should obey it.

BJsgoodlifeOn occasion I have been at fault for getting into discussions with members when asking a question. The trouble is I don't know how to set up a chat room without seeing the link that is visible after to much chatter. Is there a way to do this? Thank you all in advance.

Q: Could we rename the "header" tag?

Sneetsherheader idiom is used by many languages. But they don't mean the same thing , like the confusion between the web page header (visual) & the compiled languages headers. I've tried the Numix recently. But it is not as good as seen in the pictures though
So switched back to default Ambiance, mono-dark

user136984

Well, I like it, and prefer it to the default. :)

user136984
@reversiblean: Which one did you try out? The same one as I? Or a different one?

user136984
@terdon: Could you just say something please, and also tell me if you heard this ping. :)

@ParanoidPanda What's up? I didn't hear it but my speakers aren't on.

@ParanoidPanda You never learn do you? How hard is it not to one box every single one of the dozens of questions you dump here?

A: When I post links to my questions in chat, am I doing it wrong?

JamesContext my friend, context. :) You post a link, and also explain the context of the question. The user that foss was talking about here had posted it in with no context. If context is provided, then sure! Post away (within reason).

@Serg where is the script for testing?

@ParanoidPanda If I had a nickle for every time you've said that... Come on, you ask a dozen questions a week and dump every one of them here in a huge, distracting box. I don't know how many times I've asked you to stop and each time you just say sorry then do it again.

user136984
@hbdgaf: Are you not able to download the coffee script though?

I've no idea - I haven't used it last couple days
xxx: (and the oscar goes to) fucking-coffee.sh - this one waits exactly 17 seconds (!), then opens an SSH session to our coffee-machine (we had no frikin idea the coffee machine is on the network, runs linux and has SSHD up and running) and sends some weird gibberish to it. Looks binary.
Turns out this thing starts brewing a mid-sized half-caf latte and waits another 24 (!) seconds before pouring it into a cup. The timing is exactly how long it takes to walk to the machine from the dudes desk.
This is awesome

@MAteo ^ I remember that one. When I saw the question first time , I was like "You gotta be kidding right ? " I was still very new here

totally serious question, and ubuntu is perfect for that application
@terdon :/

@Mateo you know what . . . .that's a good idea for a senior design project ! Dude !

yeah!
totally want a snappy machine with apps and a phone client - tweet to it to brew - live stream to youtube - ect. anything you can think of - run own cloud on it if you want

@Serg looks good

@A.B. Any suggestions for improvement ? Any other functionality that you'd want me to add ?

woo, ubuntu phones has a legit twitter scope!

MSI just got rid of all the driver downloads for my laptop and only has a driver updater program available to download. Now, this would be great except that the program isn't compatible with AIOs or notebooks.

@Zacharee1 o/

@Zacharee1 i installed arch linux :P i like xubuntu more now, hehe

Wat

i installed arch linux

2:54 PM
why

its a good experience

Arch is nice .. . . .very minimalistic and it's a good learning experience to set it up
I've only installed it in virtual box tho

@Serg true

huh

i installed in vbox twice

2:56 PM
Anyhow, I'm gonna go work on some translation stuff. Ping me only if it's emergency , like the chatroom is on fire or something . .
Or there's an awk question . . .

the first try was ok, but something went wrong and stopped it
second try is ok :P
i installed i3wm and xfce
but i dont like so much the GDM as it is.
somehow it has option for GNOME without gnome installed

@Geomint i've installed everything by following arch wiki with no problem, but it took me 3 days to figure out how to enable keyboard in X

hahahaha

Had to enable guest additions or something

first try took me 2 days without full steps by arch wiki
@Serg hmm, i did not had problem with keyboard

3:00 PM
well , if there is a manual, then read the manual ^_^ At least i wasn't completely lost
Side note : print and save that wiki

yeah
it was not easy the first time to understand the wiki

like enabling dgm

Don't join that

why? :P

3:01 PM
@Zacharee1 MAlware ?

@Serg it's on fire :p

-___-'''' I don't care about the other chats, I only care about Askubuntu chatroom . . .The other one can be on fire as much as it wants :p

:)

My second monitor is not showin anything for some odd reason . . .
Even if I run xrandr
T_T I guess i will have to get a new laptop afterall

@Serg my laptop is 2core 2GHz 2GB-DDR2-RAM , and Xubuntu 15.04 is using 100% CPU and 80% RAM with opened atom editor and document viewer :P

3:09 PM

lol

;)

how did you make that?

sudo turnSprinklersOn.sh --location AskUbuntuChat

A transparent fire PNG, screenshots and GIMP
@Serg :p

3:11 PM
lol
@Zacharee1 ok :)

:D

My other laptop was working alright,but since two days ago, it stopped registering the hard drive . I could run Unity or Gnome in it with no problem, also dual core, but I had SSD and 6 GB ram, also DDR2. I moved the SSD into my old laptop,and this dude is 2core processor as well, but it cannot handle Gnome, it jumps up to 100% CPU, so I have to use Openbox now . . .even though i am in SSD

Are you getting a new computer?

@Zacharee1 I really don't want to, but looks like i have to get a new one . . .

Why don't you want to? Money?

3:15 PM
I wanted to keep my Toshiba L455D alive for as long as possible, and besides it was working and doing everything i needed, so had no reason to get a new one . . .

Get another :p
Or get a true HQ brand

I am either gonna get Acer or Toshiba again . . . Or chromebook . . . .because yolo, that's why . . . . But . . . .it's miniSSD is only 16GB . . . .and only 2GB ram, which pisses me off . . . on the other hand, I could get Toshiba satellite, which has some . . . 4 GB i think . . . .and 500 HDD . . . throw away a few things, get rid of that malware called Windows 8, and it's good to go

Do not get Acer
2
Their computers last about 3-4 years and then they just fail

Toshibas have problem with their batteries

get a system76, I really like mine - and ubuntu out of box ;)

3:19 PM
You have to bake them, which will last you another year or so

what about thinkpad

@Mateo is right

@Mateo I was considering that :p

@reversiblean wouldn't poke them with a stick now with lenovo the way they are...

@Mateo what?

3:20 PM
OK, I'm out . . . translation stuff . . . .

@Serg ō_ô

in greece we dupe lenovo and we say that they are from Albania :P

so they have stuff in the bios that installs stuff even on clean installs...

3:22 PM
agreed. even the metal versions break.
I had one. Now an Asus. So much more better.

@Mateo wow
@Rinzwind Asus is good, that's for sure

Dell makes good laptops

I mean thinkpads were great, but lenovo is taking it's brand down the drain

Lenovo laptops are joke to me

@GeoMint meh. Very expensive, not much by way of gaming or performance

3:25 PM
there service does suck big time

Great for business though

I have one so I know

@Zacharee1 I have this one for about a year now laptopshop.nl/product/637253/category-180887/…

@Rinzwind You're Dutch?
@reversiblean one of which?

@Zacharee1 i built my own desktop :P companies don't sell what you REALLY want

3:26 PM
@GeoMint MSI comes close

@Zacharee1 yes. oh wait not that one. It is that one but the one with an ssd + hdd.

@Rinzwind nice

@Zacharee1 i don't like MSI

@GeoMint wai?
wai u no liek msi

@GeoMint I am never ever ever ever getting me a desktop again. Notebook. And at home an extra 22+" screen with kb and mouse.

3:27 PM
^

there is no reason for me. i just don't

@GeoMint they use their own hardware in their laptops, they're cheap, they're good
They only pre-install Norton, no Superfish :p

Norton? the antivirus?

Yeah, but only the Internet Security part

There is a Korean manufacturer that makes computers with no OS. Those are pretty good for day to day use too and very cheap

3:28 PM
And it's actually easy to remove
@Rinzwind what are they called?

thinking about that >:)

@Zacharee1 its trial though...

@GeoMint yeah, it's the only annoying thing that comes pre-installed

@Zacharee1 Norton.. big turn off for me though :D

format and install ubuntu

3:29 PM
@reversiblean extremely easy to remove

Thing is ... the website alternate.nl sells them but calls them "Alternate" (they also let the selling company brand it )

@GeoMint Well, I did format, but that was because I dropped my computer and had to reinstall (Windows). Now I have dual boot
@Rinzwind oh
weird

found it: BTO

Dual Boot is not choise for me :P If i want to use ubuntu on windows machine i just use VBOX

3:31 PM
Ich will Nederlands lernen

@GeoMint me too. and even then .... I tend to not use windows.
there is just 1 piece of sofwtare I need windows with: my logitech remote control.

It's so frustratingly similar to German and English, but different enough that I can barely understand

@Zacharee1 that are 4 german and 1 dutch word :=)

@Rinzwind Ja, ich spreche Deutsch

Ik wil Nederlands leren ;-)

3:32 PM
My favorite phrase from English to Dutch is "That is correct" --> "Dat is correct"

@Zacharee1 again. 3 german 1 dutch word >:-D

"Ja?"
ik spreek Deutsch?

@Zacharee1 just to confuse you: some of our fellow Dutch write correct as korrekt ;-)

@Rinzwind German copycats :p

In holland a word written with a c pronounced as a k we also write with a k :D

3:34 PM
@Zacharee1 ich spreche deutsch

@Rinzwind that's so copying off German :p

Ich spreche und schreibe auch Deutsh

ficken deutschland copyright law

Und ich lebe an die Grenze met Deutschland und Belgien :=D

Ich spreche und auch Deutsh schreiben? @Rinzwind

@GeoMint hey
No cursing :p

ok back ontopic :=D
who wants to format his system and try if he can get his stuff back?

@Rinzwind That's half Dutch
@Rinzwind NO

3:36 PM
lol

why you use capital I and not i when you say "i go somewhere" ?

Because we took some stuff from German and capitalize some nouns
¯_(ツ)_/¯

hahaha

Proper nouns and that one pronoun

@GeoMint in English I is always capalized In German ALL nouns are

3:39 PM
While in German, every noun is capitalized

so?
I hate You? like this?

So, "Ich spreche und auch Deutsch schreiben?" is actually the correct form. I guessed that :o

@GeoMint no. Just "I" is,

I hate Horses more like

sometimes when they edit my questions in AskUbuntu they change the i to capital

3:40 PM
I like and Horses ride would be I like and ride horses
@GeoMint well it's supposed to be

why?

We don't know. It's English
No one knows
English is a Frankenstein's Monster of Latin, French, Spanish and Germanic

hahha
they use so many greek words and they dont even know

That too

like anecdote

3:42 PM
Yurp

its greek and the right is: ανέκδοτο

I forgot about Greek :p

:P

I read "avekdoto"

@Zacharee1 and nordic languages too. don't forget about those

3:42 PM
read anekdoto

@Rinzwind Germanic?
@GeoMint I figured

its δ not d

ever watched a Swedisch movie? after 10 minutes I did not use the subtitles anymore
it is sooooooooo much like english

@Rinzwind Swedish, really?

3:44 PM
(in Holland we use subtitles ;-) )

ō_ô
Well, we do in the US too...

@Zacharee1 Girl with the dragon tattoo is swedish and very easy to understand (except for some of the nouns)

i use subs for english :P

@reversiblean huh

3:44 PM
can I get these icons on desktop?

@reversiblean which?

icons in the picture

where did you saw that?

@GeoMint looks like the phone icons ;-)

I see the dock icons, the titlebar icons, the icons behind the browser

3:46 PM
yup, yup. It's Ubuntu Touch

see >:)

wonder if I can get those on desktop

sure if you can find them. it is just an icon set

Ohh, Ubuntu Desktop

@reversiblean is that what you are looking? noobslab.com/2015/01/… its the theme

3:48 PM
@Rinzwind Swedish seems closer to German or Dutch than English

@Rinzwind I would bet your Dutch is helping you more than your English. Or, perhaps, the combination of the two. I doubt that someone who speaks English alone could understand it, I don't anyway.

@terdon I only get it because I can speak a little German. The Dutch definitely helps
@Tim hello to you too

nope. I can guarantee you it is not.
The sentences in Swedish are set up as it is in English. That helps a lot

Tim
@Zacharee1 I have 22" acer screens

3:49 PM
@Rinzwind but the words are much more German
Vocab is just as necessary

Tim
After 9 months one got an insect in it. Apparently "insect ingression" is not covered by their warranty. So that one was opened up :P
