@MartinBüttner Exactly. C/Java/Python (usually) can't compete with CJam/Golfscript/Pyth, but we still want those solutions.

It's no secret that I agree with that ;)

Anonymous
In fact I'd like to see a challenge where the Java answer is shorter than the CJam/GS/Pyth answers

"Print the names of all of the methods of the class java.lang.String ..."

Question: Do 2D stack languages exist?

I don't know @VTCAKAVSMoACE. That would be interesting...

5:06 PM
I just added the functionality to mine, wanted to know if it existed elsewhere. >.>

How does a 2D stack work?

You have a stack... of stacks.
private static ArrayList<ArrayList<Double>> stac = new ArrayList(0);
And then later, you add the first stack. :P

@VTCAKAVSMoACE Also I believe I've come across one or two esolangs that have a BF-like tape but with stacks instead of integer-cells.

@MartinBüttner ><> uses substacks that only exist when you use [ ], I believe. They're destroyed after ].

so? it's a stack of stacks, right?
you can only ever access the top stack

Yeah, but it doesn't exist program wide to be used at any point. :P
^ That needs rewording.

then what you want is not a stack of stacks
but an array of stacks or a tape of stacks or something like that

5:14 PM
Hmm. Alrighty then.

What about a 2D stack-ish thing shaped like a Young diagram?
In mathematics, a Young tableau (pl.: tableaux) is a combinatorial object useful in representation theory and Schubert calculus. It provides a convenient way to describe the group representations of the symmetric and general linear groups and to study their properties. Young tableaux were introduced by Alfred Young, a mathematician at Cambridge University, in 1900. They were then applied to the study of the symmetric group by Georg Frobenius in 1903. Their theory was further developed by many mathematicians, including Percy MacMahon, W. V. D. Hodge, G. de B. Robinson, Gian-Carlo Rota, Alain Lascoux...

@ThomasKwa sounds quite interesting
I guess my recent attempts at coming up with an esolang based on stacks of cups is similar

The stack pointer would have two coordinates, and there could be "pop up", pop left", "push right" and "push down" commands.

@ThomasKwa My language has this. o-o

o—o

5:18 PM
My stack (this probably isn't the right word...) of stacks could be visually represented like this:
4 7 9 6
5 7 5
2 3

@Mego Go for something that requires Unicode support, such as codegolf.stackexchange.com/q/57143/42963

The thing is, you don't move right or left in the stack - the stack moves right or left relative to you, and rotates to make the first the last and vice versa when it goes past you.

@MartinBüttner When is your "Simple cat-like program" going to come to PPCG?

If you were from Texas you'd understand

The Republic of Texas (Spanish: República de Texas) was an independent sovereign country in North America that existed from March 2, 1836, to February 19, 1846. It was bordered by the nation of Mexico to the southwest, the Gulf of Mexico to the southeast, the two U.S. states of Louisiana and Arkansas to the east and northeast, and the United States territories encompassing the current U.S. states of Oklahoma, Kansas, Colorado, Wyoming, and New Mexico to the north and west. The citizens of the republic were known as Texians. Formed as a separate nation after gaining independence from Mexico in 1836...

If Texas dreams hard enough, it'll have a chance to be come independent and bottle it at the last minute like Scotland ;)

Sure that's a logical conclusion from that discussion :P

One reason why I like Texas is because of TI calculators

TI's 83+/84+ series is slow and buggy.
The processor in a TI-84+ is a Zilog Z80, which was launched in 1976.
The new color one has an ez80, which would be about 12x faster...

6:26 PM
if TI wasn't so cheap with its ROM.
The ROM is, if I remember correctly, so cheap that every byte read from the operating system's routines requires nine wait cycles

Get the new ones that people have made Pokemon emulators for.

(this is a simple pipelined processor that has many one-cycle instructions, so it becomes as much as 10x slower)

@ThomasKwa TI calculators are the only calculators I ever had.

TI-84 Plus Silver Edition Calculator is the full name of it, I think.

@ΚριτικσιΛίθος Me too, actually, but I hear HP's are better.
The newest one is the TI-84 Color Edition (2015), then before that the Color Silver Edition (2013), and the Silver Edition (2005ish?)
They've been making Pokemon for those calculators for a while.

6:31 PM
Fastest Kanye in the West?

But until this year 84+ series was based on that late 70s processor, making graphing really slow.

@VTCAKAVSMoACE My calculator is the TI 84+. I have created a simple game on it, but the frame rate was so low that it looked like the screen was blinking.

> ... Plus Silver Edition...

@ThomasKwa I agree, the graphing is slow

Oh, right; they're all 84+; there's no 84 regular

6:33 PM
Well you don't want to make it too powerful -- then students won't be allowed to use it in exams!

@ΚριτικσιΛίθος If you code right, you can usually squeeze a little more performance out.

@ThomasKwa How? I tried ClrHome for clearing the frame. All code is under a while 1 statement. How do I make this code better?

@feersum For a while people actually believed that TI intentionally made its calculators slow so graphing would be slow enough that teachers could make students follow along, or something
That wasn't true, they just don't have good assembly programmers.
@ΚριτικσιΛίθος Paste the code here if it isn't too big, and I'll speed it up.
Speed optimization in TI-BASIC involves many stupid tricks.

@ThomasKwa Unfortunately I lost my calculator's USB cable...

That's fine; what does the innermost loop look like?

6:42 PM
@ThomasKwa I only have one loop.

okay, what's in it?

There is a ClrHome and getKey -> A

What are you displaying?

And depending on the keyPressed, I change the direction of the player: 4 if statements

What's inside those If statements?

6:47 PM
I change the value of the player's direction in those if statements

No, the code.

what happens if A=25?

There are four similar statements, each for the different keys pressed

can you just type in the code?

6:48 PM
If A=25:4->P

There's an idiom for moving a character around the screen

If A=34:2->P
If A=24:3->P

getKey->K:X+(K=26)-(K=24->X:Y+(K=34)-(K=26->Y
that changes the X/Y position
Also, use Output to display a space where the player was before instead of using ClrHome to clear the whole screen, if that's all you're changing each frame.

In my game, the arrows keys don't change the player's position, it changes the player's direction so that the player does not have to press a key repeatedly
