@ChristianHupfer I am home, Feierabend. Arrived close to 3 PM, now it's close to 6 am. I am tired.
No point in going to sleep, next appointment at 8:15 am.

2 hours later…
5:32 AM
@RomainPicot: Only 15 answers :-(

5:55 AM
@Johannes_B Well, nobody enforced you to do the Kneipenrally

6:11 AM
@ChristianHupfer so few? You're not answering a lot :-P

2 hours later…
8:35 AM
@ChristianHupfer Other two answers and also my number will be palindrome.

9:09 AM
@egreg and your question count is palindromic

@DavidCarlisle So is yours! Congratulations!

9:23 AM
Hi all
I've got a very strange issue goign on in TeX right now.
I'm editing some lecture notes in mathematics, and there are a number of (commutative) diagrams.
To typeset these, I was previously using the xy package, but I decided to switch to tikz-cd
However, I'm currently getting some strange errors. The commutative diagrams won't compile if I'm using a (custom) command: \graph, which is just defined as \operatorname{graph}. However, using literally \operatorname{graph} solves it---everything compiles normally.
What kind of an issue could this be?

@Danu An example?

@egreg Alright, here it comes
` \begin{tikzcd}
\graph f\ar[r]& g
\end{tikzcd} `
no need to even have any arrows in it; just \begin{tikzcd} \graph f \end{tikzcd} already fails.

@Danu TikZ preempts \graph for usage with its graphs library. The command is redefined only in TikZ environments. You have an unlucky choice of command name.

@egreg damn
That's brutal :P
Would've never been able to figure that out---thanks a lot.

@Danu Sorry!
@Danu \DeclareMathOperator{\Graph}{graph}

9:30 AM
@egreg Fair enough :)

@Danu And some search and replace

Also, what's the difference between declaremathoperator and operatorname?
Is declaremathoperator just a shortcut to \newcommand{\bla}{\operatorname{bla}}?

@Danu With \DeclareMathOperator{\foo}{foo} you make TeX do less work every time \foo is found. With \newcommand{\foo}{\operatorname{foo}} you do more work (some nanoseconds, actually). The \DeclareMathOperator way is shorter, isn't it?

@egreg It is, and I'll switch to the latter.

@Danu There is a real reason why \DeclareMathOperator should be used. If you go with the \newcommand path and happen to have \foo in a part that's subject to \MakeUppercase, you'll end up with FOO in the printout.

9:34 AM
@egreg Alright, that sounds sensible

@Danu That doesn't happen with \DeclareMathOperator

Thanks for all the help :)

@Danu You're always welcome!

TeX - LaTeX users are so friendly :D

@Danu We do our best. :-)

9:40 AM
It's very different on some other sites :P

@Danu We also have ducks! :)

@PauloCereda You bunch of quacks!
3

@Danu awwww

@Danu not to me, they're not!

@DavidCarlisle Can you give any good reason for being friendly to you?

9:52 AM
@egreg I'll think about that and get back to you....

@ChristianHupfer It is my duty to do good. Helping around where i can. Fighting crime at night. Hunt templates on wednesdays. Sleeping is overrated.

@DavidCarlisle we wub you. <3

10:47 AM
Hi all, I'm back with my next question!
 \begin{tikzcd}
  TE\ar[r,"\pi_{TE}",bend left=30]& E\ar[l,"\pi_{E}^{*}",bend left=30] \ar[r,"pi_{E}"]&M
\end{tikzcd}
This somehow puts the text in an awkward position. Does any of you know what is causing this and/or how to fix it?
This is the output it produces. Note the ugly positioning of the text. I assume it has something to do with the bending of the arrows.

@Danu One for the main site, I think

@JosephWright It's not a trivial issue, then? :(
I know there are some commands to control the position of the label of each arrow: From the documentation: "To further modify the appearance of an arrow, note that <options> may contain any key that can be passed to TikZ's \path command. Similarly, a label can receive additional options"
In an example from the documentation, I found commands such as "near start" and "near end" to control label positioning, but nothing like "middle" (which is what I'd like to have).

@Johannes_B Only on Wednesday? That's a very lazy concept of doing your duty ;-)

@Danu You can control the positioning along the arrow by pos=<fraction>
\begin{tikzcd}
 TE\ar[r,pos=.4,"\pi_{TE}",bend left=30] &
 E\ar[l,pos=.525,"\pi_{E}^{*}",bend left=30] \ar[r,"\pi_{E}"]&M
\end{tikzcd}

@egreg You're the best!

10:55 AM
@Danu ^^^^ Trial and error, I'm afraid

@egreg That's fine by me

@egreg Ask 11 questions and you will have another palindrome ;-)
@Danu Depends on the user :D

@egreg Do you have any idea why the positioning is so sensitive to the decimal you put in?
The difference between .4 and .6 is certainly not 20% of the arrow length

@Danu No, I got quite surprised during my experiments.

@egreg Me too ;)
I guess I could ask that on the main site
Seems like a more intelligent question

10:57 AM
@Danu But the position is measured from the center of the objects, I guess.

@egreg How so?

@Danu There are great experts in tikz-cd

How could .4 and .6 be on opposite sides of the center then?

@Danu Dunno.

I guess I'll ask on the site.

Q: links in pdf file not working with ebook reader kindle

antmjrMaybe my question is not strictly related to the subjects of this forum, tell me and I'll delete this message. Links in pdf files seem not to work with Kindle ebook readers. I have a TeXfile of my study notes, and in the preamble I have put \usepackage[pdftex,colorlinks=true,final,pdfpagelabel...

@ChristianHupfer I'm not an expert on your site, but my gut says definitely.
But I think it could be rephrased as on-topic...

@Danu Yes, that's why I did not take action so far.

Lol, someone just mistook Physics Meta for a MetaPhysics site :D

@Danu :-)

@Danu It's the same there :D

Q: How is the positioning of labels attached to arrows calculated by the tikz-cd package?

DanuI recently bumped into a small problem while using the tikz-cd package. It was about the positioning of the labels attached to certain arrows. One of the users in chat was friendly enough to point out to me that the positioning can be manually controlled using pos=<fraction>. Upon implementing ...

hi all
I want to latex a matrix with the first column all zeros and the last all ones and the ones in between are all possible binary vectors. I think a good way to do might just to have horizontal dots for the middle columns
how can you do this in pmatrix?

@Lembik \dots?

@TorbjørnT. I could put them in every row but I was thinking it would make more sense to have them in the middle
hmm. is there maybe a sensible mathematical notation for this matrix I could just use instead?

@Lembik I wouldn't know. But if you want some dots in the middle, surely that is only a problem if you have an even number of rows.

11:36 AM
@TorbjørnT. I think I will just kludge something.. thank :)

You can do stuff like diagonal dots
that's what I often do
Horizontal on the first row, diagonal in the "middle" part and vertical on the first column

@Danu interesting.. thanks

...but I guess that only makes sense when there's an obvious pattern on the diagonal, which there isn't in your case.

11:50 AM
@egreg the first answer suggests it's a bug!

@Danu I was exactly thinking to LaRiFaRi!

@egreg You mean when you mentioned the experts in tikz-cd?

@Danu Yes.

@JosephWright has that l3names fix gone to ctan yet? (I don't see it:-)

@RomainPicot That's just because I have to approve your editings all the time -- no room/space/time for answerings questions is left :-P

12:11 PM
So, should I report this thing as a bug?

12:24 PM
@ChristianHupfer only 99 post edited compared to 1449 for you :-P

yo'
1:20 PM
@RomainPicot you should get over 2k in two days :-) :D

1:41 PM
@DavidCarlisle No
@DavidCarlisle I still need to do the latest stuff: train this evening hopefully

2:02 PM
@Johannes_B really this question is aimed at you:

A: No BoundingBox when using a custom template

David CarlisleThe thesis class you are using includes the line \RequirePackage[dvips]{graphicx} that is basically just wrong, and you should report it to the maintainers. As it is (if you can't delete the [dvips] from your local copy) the class only works with latex followed by dvips, not with pdflatex or ...

@JosephWright was looking at that 2015/01/01 failure again. It looks odd, I suppose I'll have to build the format, but is miktex distributing a latex/base including ltluatex.tex but without rebuilding the format to a current base?

2:22 PM
@DavidCarlisle I suspect the common MiKTeX admin/non-admin business

@JosephWright I hear rumblings but don't really follow these things never having used miktex:-)

2:48 PM
@DavidCarlisle freaking templates.
Actions to be taken? The question is completely unclear and too broad for my taste:

Q: Template/package for preparing notes for a blackboard talk?

KimballSometimes I like to TeX up my notes for a blackboard talk (which I will print out and bring to my talk, not to distribute, but just for my own reference). However the default classes like article are not perfectly suited for this, the primary issue being that what I TeX does not end up being as ...

4:15 PM
@yo' I have I have two day rep cap which I never had, and I don't have so much time right now :/

@RomainPicot: Two day rep cap? Mortarboard badge????

4:31 PM
@ChristianHupfer I should have it if I wanna it the 2k rep as @yo' said. But it's quite impossible

@RomainPicot I don't understand?

4:57 PM

@Johannes_B @ChristianHupfer Can you take a look at that please? Especially with the recent comments.

@Johannes_B: Pinging (or Penguining?) yourself?

@ChristianHupfer Cool, huh?

@ChristianHupfer spot Das looney. :)

@Johannes_B Darth Vader says: Most impressive ;-)

5:03 PM
@ChristianHupfer I wanted to draw your attention at the question, though. ;-)

@PauloCereda I spot one... a yellow duck with black stripes on its waist ... did you mean that bloke? :D
@Johannes_B Aufmerksamkeitsdefizitsyndrom ... :D

@ChristianHupfer That sounds suspiciously familiar....

@PauloCereda You should investigate!

@ChristianHupfer Duck of the Yard!

@Johannes_B: Off-topic, since too broad, I would say
@PauloCereda Inspector Look out of the yard? ;-)

5:06 PM
@ChristianHupfer Theresamanbehindyou. :)

@PauloCereda Tiger! ... Where, where? ;-)

@ChristianHupfer :)

Ladies and Gentlemen, raise from your seats, the Grand Wizard just entered the building: @egreg ;-)

@ChristianHupfer Gregorio of the Yard? :)

5:09 PM
@ChristianHupfer On the train, waiting for my glass of wine.

@ChristianHupfer Off-topic because not related to TeX at all (looking at the latest comments).

@PauloCereda I always drink wine on the train /harsh voice à la Bela Lugosi

@egreg No wine train?

@ChristianHupfer Waiter's near. :)

@egreg I alvays drink vine. :)

5:11 PM
@Johannes_B I would say too the posted answer is none ...
@egreg \vfill \glass? ;-)

@ChristianHupfer Yes, should probably be an edit.

@ChristianHupfer :)

@Johannes_B flagged
I am off for a while... see you later

1 hour later…
6:33 PM
Quaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaack.
2 hours later...

how would I make this into a new function / command :
\begin{center}
\line(1,0){350}
\end{center}
so the whole three lines of that in one command such as \my_line or something

@baxx Please always post short compilable examples.
@baxx Three lines?
\documentclass{article}
\usepackage{blindtext}
\usepackage{showframe}
\newcommand{\cntrline}{\begin{center}\rule{.6\textwidth}{.4pt}\end{center}}
\begin{document}
\blindtext
\cntrline

@PauloCereda Haven't listened to the Stones in quite a while. youtube.com/watch?v=hH_j_GjNKaY

@Johannes_B :)

@PauloCereda Saw them in 2006 in Berlin and Stuttgart. It was amazing.

@Johannes_B I almost went to their show in Copacabana, but I only watched them live on TV.

@PauloCereda saw that on dvd. Was great.

7:13 PM
@Johannes_B :)

7:55 PM
There and back again ... a story by Bilbo Baggins ;-)

@ChristianHupfer as I say I wouldn't invent the lists especially not from memory (Karl, listed in comments has never been a member fro example0 (Alan hasn't had any active membership for 15 years or so..)

@DavidCarlisle Alright, I could just not remember name, sorry, I will do so

@ChristianHupfer By the way it's “Bruno Le Floch”.

@ChristianHupfer probably best just to delete both of the lists.

@egreg Corrected the spelling
@DavidCarlisle Why? The question was about the people behind 'LaTeX' ... a pure project page link is nice, but ... well, the VIP should be mentioned too, in my point of view

8:08 PM
@ChristianHupfer because they are wrong, mostly.

@DavidCarlisle Please tell me who should be kicked out then... according to the L3 project link the names are correct... I even forgot some names ...

@ChristianHupfer fixing them would mean deciding if you want to list anyone who has ever had write access (do include Michael Downes and some others) or just people now, in which case some of the people in eh list need to come out, and separating 2e and l3 doesn't really work, it's one team, Joseph has made commits to 2e for example, I suspect Will and Bruno haven't, but they get all the team mail, and so it goes,....
The project web site lists all all members with some historic context here latex-project.org/latex3.html I'd delete the lists and link to that

@DavidCarlisle: I see ... well, I wanted to state the 'current' maintainers

@ChristianHupfer me frank and joseph if you mean who has done a commit in the last 5 years, but chris, rainer, will, bruno david K, Robin and Morten get all team mail and take part in design discussions so it all depends. But best just to link to the page

@DavidCarlisle: I kicked all the names out and used the link

8:15 PM
@ChristianHupfer thanks

@DavidCarlisle No worries ... if you refuse to get the merits ;-)
@DavidCarlisle: I was about to start a list of all package and class authors, but now ... ;-)

@ChristianHupfer ctan.org/author

@DavidCarlisle too easy :D You're a fun killer ;-)

@PauloCereda hello!

@yo' Hi Tom! <3

Is there a LaTeX macro for ¬ as in ¬P ? I keep finding ones that strike a line through things

yo'
@baxx \neg as you could easily find out at detexify.kirelabs.org/classify.html

@yo' ah ace that worked
well if one doesn't know the site it's not so 'easy' of course ;)

@yo' I tried my luck with a post on meta, as we talked :-)

Q: Learning LaTeX -- book promotions

Stefan KottwitzWhen I recently made my LaTeX Guide available for free download for one day (see blog post), with permission of my publisher, some users had missed that occasion.
