In case anyone was wandering whether or not Lightness Races in Orbit is an old kermudgeon
I generally agree with your answer, but while reading it I got this irritating itch under my mind's skin because of statements like this: "your browser would take ten years to complete, by which time the requirements would have completely changed" I really blame lazy culture of the new programmer generations for this. It's completely possible to write efficient, well-designed code without it taking ten years and without it taking long enough that your requirements mutate in the meantime: it's just that people don't bother to diligently plan properly any more. They're mistaught, I suspect. — Lightness Races in Orbit 14 hours ago

The order of the initialization process of an enum is complicated. Would be happy to talk more about it in the 2nd monitorrolfl 14 secs ago
Hey Jim

Jim
hello
Hello rolfl

Normally in Java classes the static initialization happens before any instance processes are called.
But, in enums, the enum instances are initialized before anything else.
So, the initializers like:
TYPE_A(513, 520, 528, 530, 532),
will create a new instance of the CustomTYpe called TYPE_A, with the int[] array arguments we store in mapto
Make sense so far?

Jim
5:05 PM
Yes

OK, so, the order of initialization follows the required layout of an enum:
public enum CustomType {
    TYPE_A(513, 520, 528, 530, 532),
    TYPE_B(501, 519, 529),
    TYPE_C();

    private static final Map<Integer, CustomType> typeMappings = new HashMap<>();

    static {
        for (CustomType ct : values()) {
            for (int v : ct.mapto) {
                typeMappings.put(v, ct);
            }
        }
    }
It creates the type A,B, and C instances of the enum.
Then, it creates the static Map.
then the static initializer block is run.
In that block, the for-loop:
  for (CustomType ct : values()) {
The values() call in that gets the already-created instances of the enum

try asking on codereview.stackexchange.com — Daniel A. White 37 secs ago

And, because those instances were created with the array of int vaues the types map to, you can then pull those out.
That's what the mapto array is for, so you can declare what int values the type maps to, and then process it later in the static block.

Jim
So basically the TYPE_A, TYPE_B, TYPE_C act as member variables of the CustomType and they are instatiated as soon as the CustomType is loaded?

Yes. That's how enums work.
See the docs/tutorial ^^^

Jim
5:12 PM
Very clear. Thank you for your explanation. But how would I access the typeMappings? It is private? What is the standard way? Add a method to the enum? Because I want a way having the number to get the correct enum

Best practice would be to add a static method to the enum that takes an int value, and returns the CustomType. Exposing the map directly would be "bad".
So, have something like:
public static CustomType getTypeFor(int value) {
    return typeMappings.get(value);
}
THen, you can call:
CustomType ct = CustomType.getTypeFor(532);
It ill return the correct type, or null if there is no mapping for the input int value

Jim
I see. Thank you very much for your help. +1

No problem. Enums can be a powerful tool, and can be applied in unexpected, and powerful ways

Programming is life.

I'm voting to close this question as off-topic because belongs on code review or a game site. — duffymo 40 secs ago

@Legato Programming is love.

@Hosch250 Automate the paper writing.
2 birds 1 stone

LOL.
Boy oh boy, that would be great.
And I would be a billionaire.
Let's see. I think I'd buy a server and set up CR on it, separate from SE.
Then we could graduate properly.

I know @skiwi generates cards from existing cards. Has something like that been tried on papers yet?
You could probably write a paper about automated paper writing.

@Mast My name!

@skiwi You're quick!

Well, you know, I'm lurking :)

I am writing about networking security.

It is actually really interesting if you could combine all papers in the world into a corpus and then have a neural network learn from that and let it write its own (nonsense) papers :D

7:05 PM
You know, I read about auto-checking papers once.
One guy got an A by saying that the increases costs of college were due to greedy TA's flying around the country in U-sponsored private jets.

It was probably written well and the risk of plagiarism is quite low with such a topic.

LOL.
The point is, the systems can't detect nonsense.

Neither can many humans.

I guess so.

Q: Are Neo generators a Scam or not?

sergiolAfter reading the FAQ page of Neo generators, I became incredulous of this particular part (translated from Spanish): HOW DOES IT WORK INTERNALLY? Our optimized system collects the abundant radiant energy from the atmosphere and the system is excited using a plasma reactor also manuf...

Obvious bullshit, but OP was in doubt.

7:11 PM
I don't even understand it.
(Possibly because it is BS.)

Every once in a while somebody advertises with revolutionary power sources. They're usually a joke, scam or both. This was one of those.

I don't know what to think of Tesla. He was a genius, but sometimes it seems like he was loony too.

Tesla was an awesome loony.

So are most programmers.
I mean, people seem to think programmers are loony, as a general rule.

Aren't we?

7:16 PM
No, they are!
We are normal :P

Are people who want to work with Brainfuck completely normal? ;)

LOL.

We freely share the code we write, criticise others about their code for free and hang around a dark place on the internet all for a bunch of imaginary internet points.
2
I'm not sure that classifies as normal.

I hope you guys didn't think I was serious there.

With all those loonies hanging around, you never know.

7:20 PM
@Hosch250 Haha, don't worry, I wasn't thinking you were serious for saying that we are all normal :D

My elevator is running at instant speed, now I can't properly test it...
Major design flaw :-)

You mean, it is now a teleporter?

@Hosch250 Basically, you call an elevator, system dispatches an elevator, elevator arrives. There's no time delay.

@Mast Seems like an ideal world

@skiwi I only write ideal software

7:26 PM
Oh. What happens when you set up a space elevator?
Do you get instantly transported to the top too, no time delay?

If there are no floors in between, yea.

Q: Choosing lambda expression based on input

Vadims SamsinovsI have a simple if statement which, based on user input, determines which expression is going to be utilized. It looks like it can be done better. Func<Unit, bool> exp; if (onlyChildren) exp = u => u.PhaseId == id; else exp = u => u.PhaseId != id; var unitGroups = _db.Units.Where(exp).G...

It only counts floors, not distance. And it iterates over floors quite fast ^^

Then isn't it a teleporter?
Interesting, so you essentially travel the 300 or so miles at light speed.

@Hosch250 Sure, the elevator doesn't know what a mile is anyway so it won't complain.

7:27 PM
Now you'll be a billionaire.

We're all billionaires if we keep going like that.
Now I need to fix my space-time continuum.
2

@Mast Are you intending to change the space-time continuum with your elevator?
I'm really interested how big it is then :D

It has no size limitation either, so it's really fast and really big.
Location and direction, that's all it knows.

Can it go sideways too?
I want an elevator from NY to SF.

Can it be upside down?

7:38 PM
@skiwi It doesn't need to, it can go both ways.

@Hosch250 If you declare your flat to go horizontal instead of vertical, sure.

Uh, I think it does matter for the passengers if it goes upside down during transportation

Why would an elevator care about passengers?

Not really, they just stand on the ceiling then.

For all the elevator cares, it's empty. I forgot to add a weighting mechanism...

Q: Calculating numbers in the Collatz sequence

James ZafarI have found two ways in which I can generate the Collatz sequence given a start number. I have looked briefly into their performance, but I'd like a more in depth/solid review into the difference in the two methods. The main difference really is, one of them doesn't have if statements. But the ...
