Hello all
its cold outside

@OctavianDamiean thanks, there are so many mikes :)

Oli
@htorque BOOM! And it's done.

\o/

Oli
I think I've had too much caffeine this morning. I'm typing BOOM! everywhere (including in source code comments for work). It's like a Mickey Bay film over here.

11:02 AM
cancellation of mobile/internet/tv contracts - Y U SO MUCH WORK?

Oli
Because they want all your money.
And Boom.

they can get BOOM head shot :P

@htorque Oh don't remind me of that ...

Oli
With those sorts of companies, it's often easiest to use a method of payment that you can block (eg a Direct Debit in the UK or a credit card that you can call up to block future payments). As long as you don't block payments while within a set-time contract, they usually get the message pretty quickly.
Plus, they contact you which saves a few minutes fighting switchboards.

i though it would be as simple as calling the guys: "hey i must cancel my contract NOW. i know i still have to pay for some months, bla bla bla." NO! it's like calling like 10 people, telling everyone the same story. :-( i've given up and will visit their stores today in person. so if anything goes wrong, they get direct customer feedback. >:D

11:09 AM
O.o
Nickserv on freenode just crashed

Oli
Well yeah the first person you speak to is sales and very light customer support. They have to transfer you off because they don't have perms to close accounts. They'll push you off to retentions who are just sales people who are authorised to "make a deal" and con you into another 12 months of indenture. You have to slip through more and more circles of hell before you find the one person in the call centre who is able to close an account.

I wouldn't put any faith in the store monkeys either though.
@AmithKK All the services were down. That happens from time to time.

My bot cant get in :(

Oli
They should be back up for most nodes now

at least i can punch them in their faces without paying for a call. :D

Oli
Why can't it get in? Is it trying to get into a +R room?
@htorque True enough

11:11 AM
@Oli It cant verifiy its nick

Oli
#django :Cannot join channel (+r) - you need to be identified with services

best thing ever: sent a question about the cancellation to support, the return read something like: "thanks! your cancellation is in progress." oO

oh, now it accepted it ...after 2 minutes

i think it came from "john" from new delhi

Oli
Yeah same here. I guess it's just lagging behind a whole load of backlog.

11:14 AM
no offense!
i'm on freenode
just joined all the ubuntu-uds channels

EMEA Ubuntu Council membership has been cancelled? WTH
@htorque To me? Nah :P
@Oli its just some routing troubles with one of freenode's sponsors

Oli
@AmithKK Has it? Actually cancelled now?

jrg
@Octavian Heh, thanks. :)

@Oli Oh, it seems to be postphoned?

jrg
It'll be interesting to see how much I can get done by the end of the year (since it doesn't appear that there are any other candidates yet… :D)
@AmithKK freenode is down?

11:20 AM
@jrg It just went for a few seconds, now all the ServBots are lagging

jrg
Ah, ok.

@jrg Oh, i did discover a major loophole in my bot though :P

@jrg I'm willing to help you as much as I can.

@jrg Doing what? :)

Oli
@AmithKK That's what I heard latest. Jonathan Carter sent an email out to the people up for membership suggesting that they'd try to rearrange a date for this meeting. That was about 21 hours ago. The EMEA wiki has also changed to mirror that.

11:26 AM
@jrg If you aint busy, can you drop into the 2buntu room?
"To err is human... to really foul up requires the root password."

jrg
@OctavianDamiean Awesome, I appreciate it

i think i need a strong drink to get ready for fighting with sales and 1st-level-support people :>

jrg
@AmithKK Sure

How to install 32 Bit Wine on 64 Bit Ubuntu? http://askubuntu.com/questions/74690/how-to-install-32-bit-wine-on-64-bit-ubuntu #64bit

jrg
Before I leave, any cool UDS sessions I'm going to miss?

11:39 AM
ask ubuntu for experts!

jrg
really?! when?!

10am
so, in 2:20h (i think :P)
Ask Ubuntu for the experts
How to use Ask Ubuntu More effectively - show the experts in the field; the kind of people we want participating more often, how they can use the site to help answer everyday user questions

jrg
:(

"Reducing Community Bickering"
we have that?

jrg
Someone make a snarky comment about the chatroom trolls for me, ok?
:D

11:42 AM
@jrg yeah, i'll probably miss it too - depending on how pigheaded the sales people are :D
:D

@aneeshkumar hi

jrg
@htorque eyeroll sales people: noun that isn't: synouns: pigheaded, subject to 1D10T viri.

whaaat? :D
me no understand, me no good english :P
no speak americano

> Dating a girl is just like writing software. Everything's going to work just fine in the testing lab (dating), but as soon as you have contract with a customer (marriage), then your program (life) is going to be facing new situations you never expected. You'll be forced to patch the code (admit you're wrong) and then the code (wife) will just end up all bloated and unmaintainable in the end.

jrg
Wait, Popey got hired by Canonical? whoa.

11:47 AM
cool

jrg
They be a-hiring-like-crazies

they hire crazies? hey, i don't have a job... :D
4

@jrg Yep

jrg
Yeah, was thinking the same thing @htorque.

i can lurk in chats, answer questions, and report bugs - sounds like someone they need! :D

jrg
11:48 AM
Do they need another member of the Canonical Ask Ubuntu squad? :D

Does anyone here have the newer Pheonix bios?

automated system testing - totally not my area of expertise, but that would interest me most i think.
@AmithKK "the" newer phoenix bios? i think most of the motherboard vendors customize the firmware, so it's hard to tell.

The one with this:

ok, never seen this before :)

Cool! the use linux in airplanes now!!

11:56 AM
That is not really new. ;)

yay for a kernel panic in 10km height :P
yeah, only one core - can't be new :P

WAAIT, you can READ THAT

Also @htorque of course you can just apply for a job at Canonical.

12:09 PM
That guy thinks that booting == crashing

jrg
@AmithKK Oh, yeah I've got that.
If it weren't for the fact that this is a London-based position, I'd apply. - tbe.taleo.net/NA3/ats/careers/…
I mean, seriously, all you have to do when it comes to "usability" is blindfold yourself for a few hours a day and try to use Ubuntu. :D

thinks about creating a lense that displays the Ubuntu tips and tricks. Shortcuts and stuff like that

jrg
YEAH. I love it.

Kinda like what I did with the wallpaper but as a lense.

@OctavianDamiean of course i can apply. i can apply everywhere i want to be precise. :D

12:15 PM
Put that in the application and you win. :D
I want to work at Canonical because I'm precise.

"we'll contact you." - "yeah, better do it fast, i have 5 other job interviews today." :D

Oli
@jrg That certainly seems to be Canonical's current approach.

jrg
But, then they'd have to fire you after Precise has been EOLed. :D

@Oxwivi seems to be quiet

jrg
@Oli heh, that's my personal opinion of all "usability experts".

12:16 PM
I can be oneiric as well if that is required. :P

jrg
Particularly the "expert" part. :P
@OctavianDamiean That means your job will be over even sooner. :P

i'm gutsy

jrg
"I want to work for Canonical because I'm lucid, like a Lynx."

Oli
I'll be hoary then

12:17 PM
Can't wait for the Q name. :P

jrg
"I want to work for Canonical because I'm natty" - no. :P

"quietly quitting"

Oli
I don't think they'll want anybody in an office job who describes themselves as breezy, either.

"I want to work for Canonical because I'm LTS"

jrg
rofl.

12:18 PM
oh, quitting... i have three contracts to cancel... cya!
FOR THE HORDE! :D wish me luck

cya @htorque good lick!

Oli
Best of luck. I bet you'll come back with an extra contract :)
Good lick too.

:D
i'm moving to another country - if they can pull that off, they've earned it! :D

Oli
Where are you moving to?

12:20 PM
@Oli Antarctica?

from central europe to central europe ;-)

From Germany to Austria I assume.
Because he likes Wienerschnitzels.

or the other way round? or switzerland? italy?
nobody knows for sure!

?!estimate|error to ?!estimate|error

indeed i like them, but now that i have a 'small' askubuntu shirt, schnitzelzeit is over :P
bbl

12:22 PM
lol

Oli
@htorque I know where you're moving from. I've got the Stack Exchange corporate satellite following you.

dammit
i'm too lazy for TOR

jrg
@Oli dangit, wasn't it in your contract you aren't supposed to reveal the existence of that?!

Oli
No it's okay, I just have to put hits out on everybody in the chat room.

@jrg The first thing you can do is call in a meeting.

Oli
12:25 PM
By the way, completely unrelated, you'll all be getting a present from me in the next few days.

@Oli ?

jrg
@OctavianDamiean I tried that, people in minority time zones didn't like me for suggesting it. :P

hmm
Ultimate 404!

jrg
However, the big thing is getting Ubuntu Tweak in the repositories, so I need to get in touch with tualatrix and get him there.

jrg
12:27 PM
@AmithKK heh, nice

My fathers Windows mobile has a virus

@AmithKK Nothing to say, and followed your link to read the article about Linux crashes.

Can i install android on it?
@Oxwivi k

@jrg Do you know how the command to trigger LXDE's menu?

jrg
@Oxwivi ? the alt-f2 thing or something else?

12:31 PM
I would love to bind <strike>Windows</strike> Super key to menu in the panel.

@Oxwivi You too, huh?

jrg
Ah, yeah - that file is in. ~/.config/openbox/

@jrg Alt +F2 doesn't do anything for me.
What file?

Did you mean: I would love to bind Windows Super key to menu in the panel.

jrg
the file that controls the keyboard shortcuts.

12:32 PM
@AmithKK Yeah, how do I do that?

@Oxwivi put three hyphens before and after the word

@jrg Can you pastebin it? I'm on Compiz, so gotta do it my way.

jrg
ah, forgot about compiz.

@AmithKK Thanks.

@Oxwivi Compiz?, just change the binding in "Keyboard Shortcuts"

12:34 PM
@AmithKK Yeah sure, but what do I bind my shortcut to? That I don't know in the firs place.
4 mins ago, by Oxwivi
@jrg Do you know how the command to trigger LXDE's menu?

dunno
@jrg What was that command?

jrg
no idea, i'm pastbinning my lubuntu openbox conf right now

@AmithKK By the way, do you know how to do that on command line?

@Oxwivi No

@AmithKK please don't ping me like that, it reminds me of my ex-boyfriend @Rolandtaylor

12:37 PM
@Explorer Sorry, WAAAIT ex ??

jrg

@AmithKK How can you be so insensitive?! imagine shocked face

jrg
I've gotta go now, the part you're looking for is probably called ShowMenu

12:38 PM
@jrg Thanks dude!

jrg
You're welcome, let me know what you come up with. :)

Sure!

@Oxwivi thanks for your help

@Explorer Just preserving the sanity, don't mind me.
4
@AmithKK Not quite, it looks more like pleasant surprise than shock.

jrg
12:43 PM
Oh dang, the power users community seems to like me. :D

@jrg Which power user community?

Oli
@Oxwivi Are you suggesting this power user community hates James?

@Oli I didn't count AU as a power user community, kind sir.

isp: shop no longer there \o/, tv provider: yeah, it's "in progress" (i knew that - however, he couldn't tell me what that means :D), mobile: three pretty but not very bright girls came to the conclusion that they cannot cancel contracts. or aren't allowed to - not sure really.
i should write a book on how to effectively burn time. :D

I'm sure you're all tired of me already, but: Bonaire4 is going to be a lot of fun in 30mins

but it's AU for experts - what are WE supposed to do there? :D

@htorque make sure I don't miss anything :P

i'm too tired to talk with 1st level support again, so i certainly will join the fun! :D

1:28 PM
\o/

I'll be there screwing with helping you.

the "heckling marco" session :>

Luckily we all just ignore the IRC screen

nothing new :D

1:33 PM
I hate that I have to go to Uni after the Ask Ubuntu session. I'll miss out a lot of interesting sessions.

Q: Lost Evolution Inbox During 11.10 upgrade

sadmicrowaveI just upgraded to 11.10 and lost my inbox messages in Evolution. All subfolders and their content exists and continues to receive messages but the Inbox folder remains empty (although I know I have been getting messages [via iPhone inbox]). I've tried searching for /home/[myuser]/.local/shar...

Oh? Well I have WLAN at the FH so I actually only miss one session.

Oh wow! Thanks. :)

2:00 PM
@MarcoCeppi I'm in your room ... watching you.

Oli
I wish people would stop banging things
I have!

Banging things is an essential part of UDS.

it's a challenge to hear things in sessions

Oli
Finding local AU/Loco users when new users post things... That's an interesting idea.

Not a bad idea.

Mind me making a comment? Why was the accepted vote removed here and a bounty inserted?

that's a ---->>>>stupid<<<<<----- way to try and get an answer for 11.10

> Needs to be updated for Ubuntu 11.10

See the >>> <<< I added
since I have 17 upvotes the result will be that I will receive the bounty regardless of an answer that's suited for 11.10

Oli
Somebody is muttering near the microphone.

2:30 PM
or am I expected to remove a completly valid anwser when it was posted?

That is Jorge and someone else.

@Rinzwind you won't get the bounty. you don't need to remove it, just add a note that it's for 11.04.

@Rinzwind Well you can edit it?

not going to happen. The answer is a valid answer for Ubuntu <11.10. and still is a valid answer.

Oli
@Rinzwind No of course not. A fairly typical thing is to add another answer or edit the current one so you have # For 11.10 at the top and # For older releases underneath. That's totally optional though. You can let somebody else do that.

2:31 PM
11.10 needs its OWN question

Why would it?
Is the problem the same on 11.10 as on 11.04?

Oli
No. We can't have new questions for every release. Munge the answers, not the questions.

cuz you will find the question when using a search engine.

Hello chat from UDS!

2:34 PM
:)

Oli
Hi!

Hello all.

\o/

Oli
@MarcoCeppi this is a notification :)

Great answer: How to make your College to use Ubuntu? http://askubuntu.com/questions/73489/how-to-make-your-college-to-use-ubuntu/73495#73495 #windows

Oli
2:43 PM
Nonsense. All the serious rule-making goes on in chat :)

Indeed. :D
They are only documented on Meta. :P

i hardly ever visit meta :P

Of course you do! This is meta.

Can we have like different list of answers for each Ubuntu version? Like if I go to a question with answers specific to 11.04, and a new answer it will appear in a different area.

i thought this is sparta?

2:47 PM
How do you mean different area?

Like a different page maybe?
The area where the answer shows will change to show version-specific answer.

Oli
STICKAHS!

Wot?

they get stickers without being on the first few pages? NO WAY! :D

Well just make sure to use a huge font to denote the it is another version.

Oli
2:49 PM
I know, the cheek

bbl

I knew I'll miss something because I can't make it to this years UDS ...
I don't even think that users should split their answer for different versions. They should just edit the already existing answer.
Because the other answer they'd add wouldn't be more correct than the first one.

Well, I don't think it'd be quite possible without major backend changes. How about we request tags for answers?

@StefanoPalazzo Wo steckst du denn? wenn ich fragen darf!

Oh fml. Gotta buy snow tires.

2:57 PM
Zu lange habe ich auf dich gewartet ..

Calm down people, calm down

Oli
:)

I'm sure if I drive to buy them the police will wait for me somewhere on the way to the store.

Oli
Well done Marco. Good session.

Is someone in Bonaire 2 cutting his nails?

I misunderstood this title: Logging into Ubuntu using Ubuntu One
I was thinking that it would allow me to use U1 to login to my system remotely.
Think that's a good idea?

whooooooooooot
my lacie external hard drive came today...
and I had to format it in windows before I could use it!
very strange
but now it works in linux... strange enough...

@Alvar GParted formatted it not?

@Oxwivi ?!?! what?

3:13 PM
@Alvar Did you try formatting it with GParted?

no..
I used the program that came with the drive

To do what?

I formatted it in windows instead, a bit slower but it worked...

@Alvar What did you use that program for?
And did it work without formatting on Windows?

@Oxwivi no it said it had 9 mb a space in linux before formatting
@Oxwivi I had to

3:15 PM
FYI, GParted is the standard GUI formatting and partitioning tool on Linux.

@Oxwivi hwo would I know?

anyone want to help me clean up some duplicate questions? See askubuntu.com/questions/30243/…, and askubuntu.com/questions/74801/…

@Alvar I'm not blaming you for anything.

and how would I know that I had to format it before I could use it?
sounded like it...

Anyway, Ubuntu had nothing to do with it not working before formatting.
Because as you say, it did not work without formatting on Windows as well.

3:16 PM
no stupid lacies fult
they could have formatted before they sold it...

@psusi flag them and let the mods take care of it...
like marco ceppi or Oli or stefano Palazzo

Vim is 20 years old! A year older than me...

the same as me! :D

@Oxwivi i should have guessed, people get smarter at the age of 19

3:24 PM
@Explorer They do?

no doubts, but it changes to 20,21,22.. as we grow up

@Explorer Oh yeah, few days back I did check your profile and was itching to say 'So you're from the 92 batch as well?' whenever I rememberd.
