@Robusto oceans are really the most awful bastard lakes out there.

@MattE.Эллен If you really want such a small phone that is still fast, you might want to look into the Sony Compact series, Z1/2/3 Compact.
I don't think there are any other respectable phones in the market that are small but fast.

Come to think of it, your chances of catching a falling phone increase with its size.
If it's huge enough, it could be falling for hours, and you'd still grab it by the edge.

bigger phones fall slower, due to air resistance

Haha.

That, too.

3:02 PM
Negligibly so.

@MattE.Эллен But they're heavier, so they fall faster through air.

This is the best site where you can search for phones based on specifications.

Solution: prohibit air.

But they have a lot of phones that you can't buy in your country, or that are from C brands.

@RegDwigнt The Chinese are working on that.

3:03 PM
@Cerberus thanks, but I am really on the lookout for the worst site.

@Cerberus that is the most confusing thing I have ever seen!

Hehe.
The possibilities are endless!
The only limit is your imagination!

@MattE.Эллен NO

@RegDwigнt Go to theworstofbizet.ru.

@RegDwigнt geeeeeez, OK! I take it back

3:04 PM
@RegDwigнt Lovely background.

It's been exactly that way for 17 years. I swear.

@MattE.Эллен If you can handle 5.2", Ron and I recommend the G2.

As the wise Jada Pinkett-Smith once said, some things change. But others don't.

@RegDwigнt Either that, or it is ironic.

@Cerberus no. It's a business. We know them.

3:05 PM
@RegDwigнt Yeah, looks like a late '90s HTML exercise

@RegDwigнt We'll see about that come the next big bang.

All nested tables and font tags and what have you.
Best viewed in Internet Explorer!

That is their contribution to saving the Internet Archive storage space.

@Cerberus cool! thanks
@Cerberus is it easy to put a SIM in?

@Robusto I still remember putting "best viewed in any browser" on our pages. And how fresh and original and revolutionary it was. That, too, is about 17 years back.
These days people don't even know what a browser is.

3:08 PM
@MattE.Эллен Umm how do you mean easy?

Endless layers of abstraction. Here, have an app for your app that apps your app, dawg.

You have to use a pin to open the SIM drawer, but it is easy to do.

@Cerberus that sounds good

Come to think of it, "yo dawg" is like 17 years old as well.

sadly my current provider only sells the G4

Sep 29 '13 at 12:50, by Robusto
The only thing abstraction can't cure is too many layers of abstraction.

Is it ever not easy in a phone?

and that's on a contract

Are you on a contract?

@Cerberus I have to remove the battery of my HTC desire

@MattE.Эллен Haven't heard of that one.

@MattE.Эллен Ah OK. But...how often do you remove your SIM? I never ever do that.

Jesus Christ, what is wrong with that island. Everything does cost 50 pounds.

@MattE.Эллен This site looks OK. You can fill in what you want, and it comes up with the cheapest plan. moneysupermarket.com/mobile-phones/brands/lg/g2-black

@Cerberus no, that's true. I can't remember the last time. I was mostly worried about how I would get it in if the back doesn't come off

@MattE.Эллен You don't need to worry about that. It is like worrying whether a new car has doors that can be opened without pincers.
There is always an easy way to replace the SIM.
Otherwise it couldn't function as a phone.

3:13 PM
> Some users have found the issue to reduce or go away completely by using “Force GPU Rendering” in the Developer Options. To unlock these settings, go to Settings – General – About Phone – Software Info and tap on the build number continuously until you see the “You are now a developer” message. Now go to Developer Options in the Settings menu, and activate Force GPU Rendering.

@Cerberus I filled in "cheese shop", and it didn't even come up with the second-cheapest plan.

Ha, I just unlocked Developer Options on my G2.

Now enable the "Force Go Puck Yourself Rendering".

NO U

@MattE.Эллен If you search for SIM-only plans (without cashback, since that makes it confusing), you see that you can get a plan for 4 pounds a month. So it may be cheaper to buy the phone separately off Amazon or something. moneysupermarket.com/mobile-phones/brands/sim-only/sim-card

3:16 PM
@Cerberus thanks!

@RegDwigнt Are you sure you ate all the cheese?

No, not all. Only 4 pounds a month.
Luke! Use the Force GPU Rendering!

apparently I'm not eligible for upgrade. that's odd. oh well, I guess I can start all over again

@MattE.Эллен Are you still under contract, or can you switch to a new provider?
The LG G2 is 210 pounds on Amazon.co.uk, contract free: amazon.co.uk/LG-D802-Unlocked-International-Version/dp/…

Lol "you're not eligible to give us more money".

3:20 PM
Don't forget, contract also means to shrink.

@Cerberus I can switch. my contract ended in 2012

Don't forget, Contact also means a bad movie with Joe Dee Foster and Matthew McC.

@MattE.Эллен OK then you should probably switch, unless you are paying like 5 pounds now.

@RegDwigнt Aww, I liked that film. Fuck you.

Yeah big deal. And I like Lost in Translation, fuck you.
The thing about my opinion is that it is my opinion.

Q: My mother bore me in 1982

Thu MaungMy mother bore me in 1992. Is the above sentence correct? Please explain it to me why.

Your mother bored me in 1992 as well.
So GTFO.

Your mother bourne identity in 1984.

@Cerberus no :D I'm pretty sure I'm paying over the odds

I suggest we send that one back to his mama.

Yes, y tu mama tambien.

Él no ha llegado.
C'mon, mod-boy, get off yer dead butt and close something.

3:27 PM
I am too busy re-watching Contact.
As you know, that'll take another four hours.

I know no such thing.

Right. Damn. I keep forgetting there's only these two ideas you have.
Stupid stupid stupid me.
You really should be replacing at least one of them with more room. And the other one with electrolytes.

One or two stupids will suffice.

Cupid is as cupid does.

Yesterday I learned that "suffice" is səˈfaɪs. Up until then I had thought it was ˈsʌfɪs.
Question for the philosophers: how come after thirty years of listening to English, you'll hear "lol" OVER 9000 times more often than "suffice"?
Like, you'll be able to fill a Bible-sized thesaurus from vocabulary from Seinfeld alone, and make Walter White sing My Way using only snippets from the show, but not even on both of them combined will you ever hear a word as mundane as suffice.

Mundane?

3:33 PM
I dunno, I consider it totally mundane.

That's just, like, your opinion, man.

It's certainly no amaranthine or even sputnik, for that matter.
9 mins ago, by RegDwigнt
The thing about my opinion is that it is my opinion.
Shut the fuck up Don... this Saturday, you say?

Don't you have to mute commies or something?

@MattE.Эллен Then switch!

@Cerberus is his the same phone? bonanzamarket.co.uk/listings/…
hmmmm. maybe they only ship to the US

3:44 PM
@MattE.Эллен That is the Korean version.
Or a Korean version: the versioning of mobile phones is always a mess.
With shipping, it will be almost as expensive as getting a new one off Amazon.
Is it even new?

it says new

It says "new condition"...
Does it support all the frequencies that you need for all carriers in England?

it also says "condition: new"

With Amazon, you will presumably have better warranty.
@MattE.Эллен True.
It ships from Australia...

but it's true, I have no idea what bands I need supported
@Cerberus yeah, to the US
so I'll probably not buy it

3:48 PM
Hmm.
That's England.

"describe yourself in 8 words" http://t.co/G2xjkYmcsL

I always buy my smartphones new and from a local seller.

yeah, I want to walk into a shop tomorrow and walk out with a new phone, but only vodaphone are selling the phone and I don't want to be on their network
carphone warehouse don't sell it

Why not Amazon?
They're reliable and should offer full warranty.

because I have to waaaaaaaiiiiiit

3:51 PM
It should take only a few more days, max!
Maybe only 1 day, if it ships from England.

I mostly need it because my phone won't accept the app I'm trying to put on it because it's out of space

Haha.

Then move your pictures to your computer and delete them from the phone.

does take heed mean pay attention ?

3:52 PM
Or factory-reset your phone to free up space.
@JustynaNogala Yes, pay attention / follow advice.

no, I'm developing the app, so it's going into the phone's memory, and I can't remove anything else. I don't get why it's having a problem. I have deleted so much!
a factory reset sounds like it would lose all the stuff that's on it, like phone numbers

I see.
Can't you do it in an emulator?

I've just lost my phone numbers once, I don't want to do it again

Understandable.

@Cerberus it needs a camera

3:54 PM
Don't you synchronise all your contacts with Google or some other provider, btw?
OK.

yes, I think I have all my contacts in google now, so they should be OK. I'm still wary

@Cerberus Google isn't all that reliable, but it usually errs on the side of including too much rather than too little.

@MattE.Эллен Check some phone numbers in Gmail > contacts to make sure.
@Robusto Exactly.

@Cerberus yeah. I've just been organising them :)
minimum 2 weeks delivery. I can't wait that long. well, maybe I can. I'll see if I can get it close to that price, but sooner

4:27 PM
in the end I have paid £40 more, so I get it tomorrow morning

4:42 PM
@MattE.Эллен By what percentage did that increase the price?

@Robusto like... a lot? ... 40/209 * 100
19 and a bit %

@MattE.Эллен What I recently discovered is that on Android, system app updates take 2x the space of regular app updates, because the old copy is never removed.
So if you have an older android, that has a tiny system partition, it can fill up with just updates alone
Recently on a work phone I wanted to install Chrome, but couldn't, because the system partition was full and nothing could be moved to the SD card
Instead I uninstalled all the system app updates and that made room available for Chrome

yeah, that annoys me a lot. I realise it's a security feature, but I want to put things on the SD card, damnit!
I'm not looking forward to all the crappy things LG will have put on there
@Mr.ShinyandNew安宇 but doesn't that mean all your system apps are out of date?

@MattE.Эллен yes but that phone is only used for mobile testing of our website

ah, fair enough :)

4:49 PM
@MattE.Эллен Newer phones tend to have much larger built-in storage so the problem isn't as bad.

@Mr.ShinyandNew安宇 true, but still I don't need any of their crap. probably.

@MattE.Эллен probably. If you root your phone, you can install apps that will allow you to uninstall system apps.
That usually makes it harder to install system updates later though.

yeah, and I want a phone that's not rooted, too :D
(because users won't have rooted their phone, probably)

for app development it likely won't matter one bit

Q: Can I down vote my own reputation?

Zan700I am dissatisfied with a recent up vote of my reputation. Is there any mechanism on EL&U that will allow me to down vote my own reputation?

lolwhut?

4:55 PM
I thought Kris provided that service.

lol
toodle pip

5:18 PM
@MattE.Эллен Yay!
Congratulations!
Where have you bought it?
27 mins ago, by Mr. Shiny and New 安宇
for app development it likely won't matter one bit
As long as you don't grant root access to a certain (through your root manager, such as SuperSU), that app will behave exactly the same as if the phone weren't rooted.
Root access only affects those apps that have it, and you won't be giving it to that app.

6:10 PM
OK.
@Cerberus I bought it from handtec
they had good a good reputation on customer review sites, unlike the sites that were selling at ~£200
also, delivery before 12pm, which is nice

6:30 PM
I wonder about folks who add HTH to posts. Do they think all the other posts are done with the intent of not helping? Are all their posts not marked HTH deliberately not helpful?

@MattE.Эллен Very nice!
@MattE.Эллен Who is HTH?

what does press on to mean /
?

@Cerberus Hope That Helps HTH

Ahh that.
It's pretty annoying.

@JustynaNogala what do you think it means?

6:32 PM
@JustynaNogala Have you looked it up in a dictionary?

"They are compelled to press on to Canada"

look up "press on"

It means to advance or to insist.

to move in one's direction
?

6:33 PM
@JustynaNogala Yes, more or less.

(press on/ahead) Continue in one’s action: it does not explain the above sentence

@MattE.Эллен Won't load for me.

@MattE.Эллен that's why I've asked omg

@Cerberus Nor me neither.

OK.
Odd.

6:35 PM
Oh. It has now. Just took its time.

@JustynaNogala yes it does. Continue on to Canada

@JustynaNogala It means "to go on", but with a connotation of overcoming resistance.

> [no object] (press on/ahead) Continue in one’s action: he stubbornly pressed on with his work

Or at least of potential resistance.

7:25 PM
@Cerberus Difficulties of all kinds, including resistance, fatigue, and inertia.

8:17 PM
Hello everyone, this is my first time on chat! And being the great person I am, I have to use it for rep-whoring. This question english.stackexchange.com/questions/3607/…
Whoops, still getting used to chat markup. The question is from 2010 and has 761 views, but there is still a plausible pronunciation for the word not listed. I added it today in an answer. I'm hoping to get some discussion, or at least up votes on it, because I think I'm right and the accepted/most upvoted answer is wrong.

Anyone interested in Korean?

user146722
10:00 PM
@Robusto Perhaps in your interpretation of the world, it is. I believe it's a rather bold and sweeping statement to i-fuck it bye

10:24 PM
@snailboat No. My wife's uncle was, though. I guess it's easier if you grow up japanese.
@SelflessPsychopath Wut?

Anonymous
@Robusto Oh, yes. Korean and Japanese are very similar languages, so it's much easier for speakers of one to learn the other than, say, speakers of English or Japanese to learn Japanese or English. Even today, there are still linguists trying to demonstrate a genetic relationship, although they don't seem to be enjoying much success

10:49 PM
@snailboat I was in L.A. on business once and I turned on the TV in the hotel. It was on a channel that I thought for a while was Japanese (this was early in my study of the language) and I was confounded that I couldn't understand a single word. Then a title flashed on and I saw it was Korean. Weird, because they have a very similar vocal cadence.
